Jacob Lusk kicked off his New York City media tour at Live with Regis and Kelly this morning.

His performance of “You’re All I Need to Get By” is actually pretty understated–with just the right gospely touches here and there.   One of his best performances to date, in my opinion.

So far, Jacob is enjoying his first-ever trip to the big city.

I thought this was beautiful. Too bad Jacob couldn’t sing more like this on the show.

I think Jimmy Iovine has a tough time mentoring some of the kids. I don’t think he has a background in gospel music. Jimmy is between a rock and a hard place, though. If the performances aren’t successful, the judges blame him plus the singers can blame him. A mentor can only do so much.

Seems like many of the contestants sound so much better once they’re off the show.

True, but you also have to be open enough to push yourself in different directions. Yes, Jacob sounds good here. I’m torn here about Jimmy’s influence. It truly is a double edged sword. Without the producer’s influence, I believe that Jacob is one of the first eliminated. He’s a nice kid and I hope with maturity, that he truly finds his voice and does really well. He will need to push himself in order to get beyond that really good church singer.

This year I believe that the post-boot publicity junket has been a great thing for each of these kids. The Tonight Show gig especially has been a shining moment for everyone (due to the awesomeness of Ricky Minor in many respects).

Maybe I wasn’t paying attention when he was on Idol (too busy covering my ears), but isn’t he using a much lower register here?

Despite the absence of his annoying falsetto, I’m still not impressed. He’s no Marvin Gaye. Hell, he’s no old school Motown-anything. And he needs to work on losing that lisp; it’s even noticeable when he sings.

Good luck to him… whatever he ends up doing.

Too bad Michael Orland wasn’t available to travel with Jacob (didn’t he travel with Pia?) This pianist was horrible!

I think Jacob sounded pretty good here. I think with proper coaching and songs he could be successful in the R&B market.

Top 4 contestant and there isn’t even 10 comments. I’m thinking that I’m not the only one losing interest in Idol this season. Normally a thread like this would have a whole lot of comments by top 4…

Yes but we would also have had some outstanding performances to discuss by now. Haley’s “House of the Rising Sun” is pretty much standing alone for the season.

Paul, Casey, Jacob and Kendra got my hopes up with Hollywood/Vegas weeks. Then Kendra left, Paul peaked with “Maggie May” and Casey and Jacob got weird/bad.

Here, Jacob seemed in tune more so than any other Idol Dome performance. Maybe singing without bandzilla or in front of a smaller venue/audience helps? In the past, the contestant had 3 or 4 weeks of small venue/small band performances before they moved to the bigger Idol Dome. This year they jumped right to Idol Dome and we did not see any live, small venue performances. Those often are where we get the first moments of the season because it emphasizes singing rather than “performing.” Could it be that Jacob loses control when he starts the hip thrusts and dancing?

Always happens. They relax or loosen up and improve 400%. Doesn’t speak well for the show at all.

That was definitely better, but weirdly enough he reminds me of Siobhan. Magnificent instrument, not enough training or control.

A lot of former AI contestants are doing things in the industry – back up singers, radio show hosts, etc. I see him fitting in somewhere, although I don’t see that as best-selling R&B star.

I admire him for getting out of Compton in one piece, though. I have a feeling he’s more interesting than AI gave him credit for being.

Seems to me Michael Orland goes everywhere with Pia- he tweeted this morning :

Amazing day with @PToscanoAI10. What a star she was tonite. Proud to be her musical director

    Is this typical?

(Sorry MJ- I know this is off topic….)

Jacob did a great job here! Having said that, I don’t believe his vocal tone will work anywhere other than gospel, and his singing style won’t work for anything other than standards. Not a bad thing, just a niche market.

ETA: if most of Jacob’s support was off the internet, it would stand to reason that this thread would have only 12 comments in it.
