Our SarahW is auditioning today in Jacksonville, Florida, and she’s sending me dispatches from inside the arena! Here’s what I got so far:

  • 7:32 am – Omfg, It’s nasty out here! Just got here and walking to the line now.
  • 7:47 – AI Alum sighting: Kimberley Locke
  • 8:00 – Ryan (Seascrest) is here! They just brought him out to pump us up and shoot some crowd shots
  • 9:37 – Just started with the local contest winners.
  • 10:10 – Auditions are fully underway. About 7 or 8 people have gotten through. I’m in section 109 which will be about the 10th of 22 sections.
  • 11:11 – They are putting a lot of guys through. About 21 that I’ve counted so far vs. about 11 girls.
  • 1:54 pm – I’m about to go down on the floor. My row is in the next group to be called
  • 2:40 – “Not what they are looking for this year” is what I was told

ETA: Sarah auditioned with Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am”. She didn’t make it through to the next round. One person in her group was sent through–an Alt/Rock girl who sang “Broken” by Seether and Amy Lee. The second song she sang was an original. Sarah says they were putting through a lot of emo looking guys (Pete Wentz types) and she saw some guys with cowboy hats going through. There were lots of boys going through in the morning, but then more girls starting going through in the afternoon when Sarah auditioned.

Ryan Seacrest came back to pump up the crowd some more, but then he had to leave to do his radio show, which he was doing live from the venue. Patrick Lynn told the crowd that it was the biggest turnout yet for any audition city this year. About 11,000 showed up to audition.

Sarah is on the road, but she’ll be by to tell her own story in a few hours…

ETAA: Duke, another reader, auditioned today too. Read his account HERE.

Will be updating throughout the day…

Sarah! Hope all is going well!

  • skylight1219

Maybe they want a country male artist to win this year. It’s the only unturned stone I can think of.

Yes, indeed, have Kim L. autograph a box of rocks. Sounds good to me! She’s in deep do do with the Dreadheads.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Not what they are looking for this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

They say that to everyone they rejected, but what on earth does it mean? That they don’t select the best every year, but instead choose the ones that fit a pre-conceived notion of the type of singers they want for that year? Such a bizarre thing to say or admit.

  • itsalleternal

Don’t worry Sarah! That happens to many people and at least one – Colbie Caillat – became big WITHOUT Idol! :)

P.S. be careful on your way out – there are severe thunderstorms out there from what I heard…

  • cheese

Aww, Sarah. Sorry you didn’t make it. I thought you were going to sing “Crush”?!
: ) I hope you enjoyed the experience, at least.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

((((Sarah)))), that’s too bad. I really admire you for getting out there and “tasting every moment and living it out loud”, my friend.

  • Duke

Well after 3 songs and a “You have a really good voice but you’re not quite ‘there’ yet..” i was rejected. Ugh. Oh well, i a bit nervous and i think that might have been the deciding factor (although i tried my damnedest to swwon that british lady with my eyes lol).

    Some notes:

I’m from Jacksonville. Ive been singing for a few years…the past 6 months ive been pretty hardcore.

The two people who won fastpasses to the front thru Jacksonville Idol were cut.

There were about 3 or 4 people of the 16 who won local fox affiliated competitions who made it through early.
    1st girl- at last/love song
    2nd guy- ?/bubbly
there was some incredible big black chick (im sure sarah heard her) who was in the mix who sang the ending of “And I am telling you” who had the crowd stunned after she went…and she got cut lol. i knew it was coming, and the crowd didnt react well after that. they just aren’t looking for those kinda singers this year- very very few belters made it through. they want originality

Other standouts: short/stocky girl with pink hair who they had do some opening credits (along with a guy who wore a glittery gold jacket)- actually she had an incredible voice from what i heard- she made it

A BLOOPER guy with a country hat/and thick accent who was awful but had tons of personality (he made it in my friend katie’s group)- it looked like he was dipping. i was standing next to him in the line on monday- ugh….annoying.

and a boyfriend/girlfriend who made it through right before me- the girl was NOT GOOD and te guy was decent. but because they were like “hey we are going to hold hands and kiss in front of you guys and sing an off-key version of broken road” they made it through. neither of them were going to make it an the judges actually cut them and then the guy was like “oh wait we can sing together…almost forgot!)

After seeing this, i was kinda upset because Katie and I had planned on singing a duet together if it became necssary and im sure we would have made it because that is the kind thing they are looking for – ANYTHING THAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT.

My friend josh, who made it to the second round previously, was cut…along with all the other good singers i know from jax.

A 16 year old black girl who is really not very good and (not to sound mean..looks kinda weird) is friends with someone i know (yes she takes voice lessons so im sure if she makes it to S/P/R that will be brought up) made it through.

I wasn’t seeing the whole “lots of guys were getting through over girls”- if anything, i saw more hot chicks than anyone else getting thru.

Anywho, im still working on improving- for those of you who were interested, i sang crazy (gnarles barkley), i’ll be, and long & winding road.

well thats all i can think of that struck me as memorable- and i did get some nifty pics of Ryan!
If i think of anything else important ill post it! and ill answer questions if you have any.

  • itsalleternal

Awwww that sucks Duke…did you meet Sarah at all?

    ((((for Duke and Sarah))))

  • itsalleternal

There were about 3 or 4 people of the 16 who won local fox affiliated competitions who made it through early.
    1st girl- at last/love song

I think I know who that is.

  • Duke

    AHHHHH!!!!!
My mom just cheered me up! My bday is next week and she just gave me an early present- 2ND ROW SEATS TO JASON MRAZ!!!!!!! OMFG!*!$@$#$!#!%!$
    well- i just did a complete 180.

ps. they made us stand out in the rain this morning for like 2 hours, and ironically our city song was “Walkin on Sunshine” lol (and Get Ready Cuz Here I Come). Ryan is the man btw.

but 11,000 people???? nooooooo way. maybe 11,000 people including parents/friends. The bottom section of the stadium was filled completely and that was it- and i asked a guy that works there and he said thats about 10K seats…so my guess…7,000 MAX auditionees.

  • Duke

@itsalletemal- she was Very good from what i was hearing. she was kind short and wore a hat. not a whole lot of emoting, but great voice. do you know her? of her?

  • itsalleternal

Duke – I believe she is Danielle Calato based on the description and the fact that she won one of those things, but I am not 100% sure.

  • Duke

Ahh, i remember her from the spoilers from last year (i think mj posted a link of her singing I Need You on her site) she made it past the first round if i remember correctly but was never heard from again.

ETA: I just looked at her myspace/youtube channel- and she had both at last/love song covered and she looks almost identical to the girl i saw today and she won a fastpass contest…so i think its a very safe bet that that was her. she was good.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Awwww…Sarah and Duke, that’s too bad. I could borrow some words from the wise old Paula Abdul and say, “This is not the end; it’s just the beginning”, but that would suck even more.

Hopefully, you’ll try out again in the future.

From all observations, and people I know who have auditioned (and could really, really, really sing), they do seem to narrow those who make it through down to the type of singer(s) they would at least try to see in the top 12. Judging from Season 7, they were looking for a female country singer (KLC, Alaina Whitaker, or Kady Malloy), a male rocker (David Cook, Robbie Carrico), folkish singers (Brooke White or Jason Castro) or a young pop/R&Bish singers (Alexandrea Lushington, David Archuleta, Ramiele Malubay, or Danny Noriega). The list could go on, but y’all get my drift….

  • Hazehel

Danielle Calato is among a group of people who posted their singing on YouTube, this may be the one you mean -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty212ghqJYg

I like her voice. Another YouTubers that I like is Colton Rudloff (he appears to have auditioned for AI many times, but not sure if he is doing it this year), This is his performance of Apologize -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m87O0xRW_U

Perhaps you can post your performances on YouTube as well.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Awwww – Sarah Smile – I am trying to find that song. You know, you at least put yourself out there and go for what you want and that is soooo big. It sounds like you are not a quitter and someday maybe we all will see your name up in lights? It is a hard road you are travellin. You SHOULD put something up for us to hear you – that would be nice.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Oh, I’m not worried about it. It was just an audition. Thanks for the well wishes and subsequent condolences though. It is a little frustrating, but I can’t do anything about it now. Anyway, I probably won’t do it again next year, even though I’ll still (barely) be under the age eligibility. I think the only way I would is if they actually come to Orlando.

Anyway, like I said to MJ, from what I could see, it did seem to start to even off with the guy/girl ratio by the time I got down to the floor. But during one period of time, it did seem like guy after guy after guy was making it through, and then the opposite happened. At the beginning, I was keeping count, and at one point it really was 21 guys vs 11 girls who’d made it through.

Duke, you must have been sitting way closer to the floor than I was (I was way up at the top of section 109), because you got a lot more detail and were able to hear more people than me. I was completely on the opposite side of the arena from where Ryan was taping the intro stuff at the beginning. Anyway, I could hear the first few auditioners (the winners of local competitions), but once everything got fully underway, I couldn’t hear much of anything unless it was a big belter type singer.

Anyway – other songs I considered if asked to sing another one – “You’re So Vain”, “Come Rain or Come Shine”, “Feels Like Home” (from the “How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days” soundtrack), and “Put Your Records On”. The leading candidate for the 2nd song was “You’re So Vain”, but alas, I did not need one.

  • itsalleternal

Don’t worry Sarah. There is surely something great in store for you in the future. I’m sure someone will be out there to get you a big recording contract. :smile1_tb:

  • dante

Sarah and Duke – you both are so brave for even trying out – wow it sounds so hard to even make it past the first round – and it sounds like all the stars must be aligned just perfectly so that you are the type they happen to want this particular year etc.

  • itsalleternal

mj – you should give Duke’s story a full section as well.

  • flowerchild16

You guys sounded like you tried your hardest, and nothing is better than experience. Thanks for posting these, I can use them for reference when I audition next year.:) I was going to this year, yet there were no sufficient funds…

    It’s always an adventure though!

awww Sarah and Duke, just remember. . . .

The only failure is not trying. You both deserve applause !

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Sarah and Duke!

  • jenniewdc

I agree with those who said Congrats to Sarah and Duke on their bravery. To me, the worst thing would be to have a dream and not try to make it come true. So, keep trying!

My dream is to have my short stories published. I’m trying, but hasn’t happened yet. I may have it a little easier, cuz at least I don’t have to meet face-to-face with the people who say no!

    Thanks for sharing your experiences.

  • Duke

    lol
Thanks for the comments guys…I’m totally ok with it- part of me wanted to get through but part of me wants to wait another year and try out again next year because i have a feeling a lot is going to happen to me within this next year.

I can promise you all this, and i mean PROMISE, i will get through the initial cattle-call next year and will make it to hollywood- that way i can give MJ all the contestants/spoilers on the spot so she can be queen bee of all the a.idol message boards!!!!!! *not joking*
