Billy Mays, infomercial pitchman, was found dead in his home this morning. (via la times)

Tampa police say Billy Mays, the television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50.

Authorities say Mays was pronounced dead this morning after being found by his wife at home. There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play. The coroner’s office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

He was just on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Let me see if I can find that video. ETA: Yep. He was on Tuesday night, he just started co-hosting a new Discovery channel show called Pitchman. Earlier in the show, Conan delivered a moving tribute to Ed McMahon.

    Holy crap.

    RIP –
    wow June is deadly month

  • rockvixen

Wow is that ever weird. Conan paying tribute to McMahon and Mays is on the same show…then dies in the same week. Apparently stuff fell on Mays head during a flight landing. I wonder if his injury was like Natasha Richardson…bleeding in the brain. Such a horrible week.

I used to buy oxiclean all the time then the cheap no name brands came out which worked just as well … so I stuck with the cheap stuff. It’s funny though I never connected this guy to oxiclean (didn’t care about his name) until this article. I thought he was a baseball player when I first saw the trend on twitter.

  • ruskimom

I just read he was on the U.S. Airways flight that blew its front tires on Saturday. I’m having a “Final Destination” moment here …

  • lefty

I have no idea why this makes me so sad. My kids get so into his commercials.

And 50 years old is far too young to die.

  • hollygo9

This whole month has been cursed with strange and sad passings. RIP Billy (and Ed, Sky, Farrah, David and Michael)

  • Miss Chaos

    Who’s next?! Sads!

  • TWI

Awwww – another shock. He was annoying, but I kind of liked him. Another one gone too soon. RIP.

  • frogcooke

Ahh I loved his infomercials… made me watch them EVEN THOUGH HE YELLED AT ME.

  • Trina

The stuff he sold was the best! Infomercials are usually filled with such crap products but I swear the stuff he pitched actually worked. I just ordered the other day for my kids that Big City Slider station, and it rocks. RIP Billy.

  • nuttin2lose

    From TMZ

The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays — claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn’t wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.

Here’s what we know — Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head — here’s Billy’s actual quote:

“All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head.”

We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, “The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn’t.”

A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.

Could this be a case like Natasha Richardson with a delayed brain trauma from being hit in the head by falling luggage? Possible.

  • Susan M.

Wow!! This is a freaky month. Every time he came on TV, I would think, “Billy, please quit yelling at me.” But he was a master at what he did and was EVERYWHERE recently. So soon after he released his book … very, very sad. And 50 is just too young.

ETA: Oops! Is “Pitchman” a show? I heard him promoting it on the radio and thought it was a book.

  • sonyab

Oh for crying out loud! Him too??!!? This is to much! :( God is working over time.

  • Dr. Tracey

Oh wow, my daughter told me this news earlier and I didn’t believe her.
    Yikes! Another one?! Geeze.

What difference does wearing a seat belt make if you get hit in the head during a landing?

  • butte009

Not sure how much a seatbelt would have help things from falling on top of his head…. :ponder_tb:

Now if they had said that he flew up out of his seat and hit his head on the overhead compartment then maybe….

What?!!?! A seat belt is not going to help him if things are falling on his head! *rolls eyes*

    ikr… wth….

  • lizland

    Never heard of him.

Re the seat belt, maybe he actually flew up and hit his head on the console above.

  • Sunn

I never heard of him either.

My condolences to his loved ones.

  • Victoria

How sad :( I liked him, even though he was always YELLING AT ME FROM MY TV. Hopefully, he’s the last death we’ll hear about for awhile. There have certainly been enough lately.

Why couldn’t it have been the Sham-wow guy? Now he’s what I call annoying.

  • Duke

    Crazy times in celebrity deaths.

Also, um, is the site supposed to be looking different like it is? Like, blue and weird?

  • sonyab

I just saw Billy Mays in a commercial!

  • sonyab

Gale Storm from My Little Margie has died! Oh no!!! :( That’s number 2!! Billy Hayes! Gale Storm! :(

Sparkles, kinda mean, yes, but SO TRUE!! Billy Mays seemed like a nice guy, despite the yelling. But he did get my attention, and I was an Oxyclean patron as a result.
Scary if he died because of things falling on his head.
    A weird month.
Also weird: twitter trending topics are about him — Michael jackson is gone.

  • Lexus

Ahh I loved his infomercials’ ¦ made me watch them EVEN THOUGH HE YELLED AT ME.

I could tolerate Billy’s yelling at me. Tony Little (the personal trainer pitchman) was MUCH worse. RIP Billy.

  • iluvai

    Sad. :cry_wp:

  • melvel

His yelling actually made him more endearing to me. RIP Billy. :(

never mind – I think the chick who gave me the scoop might be full of shit.

  • jodeb

I can see them writing a quick Reality Show to replace the poor guy.

“So You Think You Can Sell”

They are probably writing it now. Nothing is sacred anymore.

    Scoop about what?

Not to be dismal, but has anyone read about Walter Cronkite? That is going to be a very very sad day.

Walter Cronkite’s Family: “He Is Not Expected to Recuperate”

Fri., Jun. 26, 2009 1:10 PM PDT by Marcus Errico
    Walter Cronkite PBS

Television’s most famous news anchor is seriously ill.

Walter Cronkite, once considered the most trusted man in America, is suffering from cerebrovascular disease “and is not expected to recuperate,” his family said in a statement.

The family said it was forced to speak out “to dispel false rumors.” Last week news reports stated the 92-year-old former CBS News stalwart was in grave condition.

Cerebrovascular disease affects the blood vessels in the brain, according to WebMD, and is often caused by high blood pressure.

“He is resting comfortably at home with family, friends and a wonderful medical team. We thank you for your prayers and good wishes.”

Yeah I read that. :( His poor family. :(

  • Pam

I found out about this from my mother yesterday. This one was truly a shock. I have nothing but the deepest sympathies for his wife and family. So sad.

  • Tess

Over head bins on airplanes should be sealed and closed. How do things fall from the ceiling unless someone does not shut the bins. If they weren’t shut and Billy Mays autopsy confirms that he died from a cerebral hemorrhage his widow may have a case.

If his seat belt was unfastened or loosely fastened and he flew up in his seat and hit the overhead rack…this, too, would be negligence on the airlines part. Flight attendants MUST check before landing that all passengers are buckled in.

But if neither of these prove to be the case then it may be difficult to prove. A hemmorage is caused when the skull goes one direction and the brain goes another and then collide when things get back to normal. A simple fall, a slip and trying “to catch yourself”, bumping your head, all can cause this problem.

Either way, it will be a very difficult case to “win” regardless of the circumstances. I am sure that thousands die of this every year and, hopefully, it won’t become the medical litigation that “news” sites are stirring up.

Also, the news about Walter Cronkite is indeed sad but not tragic. Hopefully his last days are calm and sweet. The man is 92 and he has lived a wonderful, wonderful life. Two events in my life will always be associated with him: the walk on the moon, and the day of JFK’s assasination.

Here is a report from the Huffington Post with a time stamp of 1:58 pm ET

Billy Mays Had Heart Disease, Medical Examiner Says

Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Vernard Adams said Mays suffered from hypertensive heart disease, and the wall of the left ventricle of Mays’ heart and the wall of one of his arteries were enlarged.

“The heart disease is perfectly consistent with sudden death,” Adams said.

An official cause of death will be issued after toxicology and other tests are completed in eight to 10 weeks.
