Troy, I think we’re sharing the same brain!  Doing IDOL can be both a blessing and curse for R&B artists.  On the one hand, it helps to get you some exposure but there is no promotion after.  I really don’t think that IDOL management is interested in promoting R&B.

I’m sure it being in Camden hurt some of the sales. I was at that show and pretty much all the seats where filled, they must somehow include the lawn volume also.

haha — I grew up 5 minutes away from Camden, and it isn’t a place some people feel safe in going to at night — despite the fact that they have built some very nice attractions in the city and have tried to make it safer

Yep Russ Parr too. They are totally lacking with his promotion to his target audience. I dont care if he doesnt have material to promote, he should still be doing interviews and making some small appearances at events. I am pretty sure he would be welcomed. Hell they could even try to get him an interview on the 106 and park show. I feel like they are going to screw it up with him. Hope I am wrong though and they dont and he finds a home with the right label and team.

Yep, It is a curse and blessing all in one. Maybe they can make a turn around with Joshua. It is not to late.

This is why I don’t think there were any viable r&b contestants for several seasons, prior to season 11.  There were a couple of reasons, one, the powers that be felt that these types of contestants wouldn’t appeal to the core audience, which given Fantasia and Rubens is a stupid thought.  They wouldn’t be a draw on the tour, and they would be hard to promote post AI, especially black male r&b singers.

I think that this line of thinking has played a role in making the viewing audience a lot less diverse, and older, than it was when the show first started.

Disappointed  that Jessica’s EP  debuted so low . Hoping she gets some radio friendly songs with her upcoming album . Cher Lloyd from the UK X Factor  is showing how it is done . Her song is now #5 on itunes. It is such a good catchy song.

Whew!  Clear as Day up to 146 on itunes:))  And it’s in its 41st week of sales:)

According Josh’s and Deandre’s comments in the Wetpaint article I provided a link to earlier, the lack of promotion is intentional.  They have not been allowed to do promotional events in order to keep the spotlight on Phillip and Jessica.  The need is for Idodl management to ship Phillip and Jessica before any of the others are allowed to record.

I agree with the point that a lot has changed in perception and the market for Idols in the last several years. We know the rating peak was season 5 though it is not just about ratings. Every year there are a dozen Idol finalists, many who release albums, and now there are contestants from other shows to contend with both US and International. I read an article in Billboard a couple months ago that said if you are not a winner its getting tougher and tougher to sell any bookings because there are just so many former reality TV artusts out there. Just look at the exhaustive list of Idols and other reality TV based artists that are tracked here and it just keeps growing. I think a shift happened in 2010 when radio decided to stop giving Idols automatic play and treating them like every it her new artist who needs to generate buzz, it was determined that coming off of a reality TV show wasn’t buzz enough to justify big play out of the gate. This is when the HAC purgatory began as well. I remember in 2009 a HAC DJ commented 1/3 of his playlist was currents and recurrents from Idols. I really do think there was a conscious decision not to cater to their TV made status. Plus the perception of the show really declined with Simon departing. Now the show is basically going to it’s 3rd set of new judges next season, that’s only going to erode perception of a show past it’s prime. I just don’t see how these things don’t impact Idols trying to get their music out in the real world.

I really think it’s what someone said on here before…people hear him sing & they don’t just want the song they want the entire album…so Cad is selling great in it’s 41st week….Scotty is awesome !!!!!

I agree that Idols need to be promoted to the right audience. For example, you can’t go country when you never were country in the first place (Ex. Danny, Bo, etc.).

I’m a country fan, but I listen to all genres of music. Country music has so many events (CMT Awards, CMA Festival, etc.) where an Idol contestant can go to fresh off of the show. Pop, rock, R&B, etc. has very few events in the summer so it’s harder to promote Idol alums. Also, even if there were events they would most likely invite new artists that have bigger songs or buzz like Carly Rae Jepsen, One Direction, etc. before the Idols.

I think there’s a small window for Idols & other talent show alums. You need to do well on your 1st album or it’s a very hard climb.

Frank Ocean is the first rapper to admit to being gay (or bisexual) so his great numbers this week is a pretty big deal. It was really a big risk for him to be so honest since hop hop is such a homophoic genre.

just think it had to do with the area just my guess ny isnt that big on country from what i have read
