If I had to guess what radio would do (ugh) I’d guess that they’ll salvage Haley a little because she’s higher up, cute and “new” and not as Idol stigmatized as Kris and Adam as two Idols with a memorable track record who are not tearing up the airwaves this era. No doubt in my mind Home will jump NCOE.

“That’s what makes me wonder. If the label has the power to give the song
a second or third push, what’s stopping them to do just like that with
    TVOL?”

Well, they’ve always got the power, but they certainly don’t always do it. Additional pushes cost effort and therefore money, so I’m sure they try to analyze what the chances are that the new push might work, based on everything they know of the past performance of the singer, the song, etc., (plus, no doubt, considerations about who else they’re pushing at the moment and what those pushes will cost and their relative chances for success and other things they may be trying to get going at the same set of stations…) and then decide to do or not do. I’m also sure that that decision-making process is far from a science, so they may well be dead wrong!

In Beiber’s case when Boyfriend peaked too low, his management went on a national campaign to get radio to give him a second chance by proving millions of video hits, downloads, huge sales and other “statistical” fan buzz. I say statistical because while some people might poo-poo fans hitting a video alot it seems to be a factor. Since he got SIXTY MILLION HITS on video in no time.

They got a second chance. Quote: paraphrasing “radio programmed the song to win”.

They were not wrong, all his tour shows sold out in minutes. Now that’s not to say they weren’t hugely purchased by radio, sales agents and his management but still. No doubt every ticket that a fan could buy, they did.

Yesterday I walked smack into Beiber on a 6 foot Hallmark card display sitting at my grocery store endcap by the registers.

TVOL and NCOE have 1.3 and 3 million views on youTube.

The bottom half of the HAC chart has been Idol centric for a while now. Durbin had a song there earlier in the year, before that was David Cook’s singles, ect. Also dropping a new single/album during idol season, one knows that there will be a barrage of new material from all the other Idols trying to take advantage at that time as well, not to mention the new Idol’s single. I do agree with the point that PDs are probably looking at all the Idol singles and considering how much playlist space to devote to them all. But I don’t think the competition is going to get any easier.

It’s funny though…all that pushing still hasn’t resulted in Boyfriend doing anything on HAC. It is currently #34 (one spot behind Kris) on that hart. It did briefly make Top 10 on the CHR chart, though

HAC doesn’t matter if you get a top 10 hit on CHR. That paves the way for the next single.

“Boyfriend” is more suited for Rhythmic than HAC format, I think.

Bieber’s home format is CHR, so if one of his songs appears on HAC, it’s as a crossover because HAC is where big CHR hits-that-aren’t-too-edgy go for active adult living with golf, before heading over to AC for long-term nursing care. Since Bieber’s target market is tween and HAC is a format for the 25+ crowd, it’s unlikely he’d get much HAC play. (Not sure why 1D is getting so much play on HAC other than maybe that the very 1990s boyband sound has a nostalgia appeal to the HAC audience.)

In practice, this means he’d have less longevity for the cumulative AI of any given song than does a Clarkson-type artist that also gets a lot of HAC and AC play… but this has to be something Bieber’s team expects.

That’s all true, and Boyfriend has done well on CHR and CHR/Rhythmic, going Top 10 on both. But the fact is, they are trying to market Bieber to an audience beyond the tweens/teens that make up his core fanbase, and they did send Boyfriend for HAC adds. They are trying to expand his radio play beyond the Pop and CHR/Rhythmic formats.

They may have sent it for adds on Hot AC, but at 18 years of age, Justin’s core format is going to be CHR.  Pop stations have never paid any attention to him before, probably because of his age, and his songs have usually peaked at the top 15.   So promoting Justin to an older audience would mean getting CHR stations to play his music, so that he can reach the 25 and younger crowd.  It’s a plan that’s working, since this is the first time that one of Justin’s songs has gone into the top ten.

If a song is perceived as too urban/rhythmic then not all the stations on the HAC panel will play it. While a lot of HACs sound like CHRs these days some still maintain a softer play list. This is the reason the current Rihanna and Usher songs won’t hit the top half of the HAC chart when they had songs in the past that were more HAC friendly. I think DJ Got Us Falling in Love and Only Girl were HAC hits for each them respectively. One Direction, Wanted, Carly Rae which sound pretty teenie are HAC friendly while Biber is more urban/rhythmic. And I agree thats the direction he needs to go in to escape the teenie image.
