Idols In Concert – Stats – 04/19/12

Concert results from Lauren Alaina and Daughtry. Daughtry is headlining a tour with SafetySuit and Mike Sanchez. Lauren is on the Sugarland tour with Canaan Smith (some of you may remember him from The Amazing Race. He got eliminated when his girlfriend refused to go down a water slide).

This is the daily numbers thread. Please post numbers when you find them.

    Wow, congrats to the Idols!

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

It’s time for the Twitter power list!

During the week (Thursday morning to Wednesday afternoon), gains ranged from 11% to 16%, with one notable exception. Jessica Sanchez got an impressive 48% Bye-Bye Boost (that’s over 60,000 new followers) without actually going bye-bye. This put her 2nd in ranking, passing both 185,000 and Phillip Phillips (who made 175,000). Colton Dixon passed 200,000, but not as quickly as he’d hoped: on April 14, he challenged his followers to get him to 200k overnight, but he didn’t actually reach that milestone until late on April 17 or early on April 18.

Overnight (15 minutes before show time to 6 a.m. PDT), gains averaged just 6%. Last week showed a similar pattern, and the actual bootee was from the middle of the pack. One star = top WNTS rating. Two stars = bottom WNTS rating.

    1  Phillips, Philip  9%

    2T  Testone, Elise  7%

    2T  Laine, Skylar  7%

    4T  Sanchez, Jessica  6%

    4T  Ledet, Joshua  6%

    6  Cavanagh, Hollie  5% *

    7  Dixon, Colton  4% **

In raw numbers, the overnight gains look like this (rounded):

    1  Phillips, Philip   15,800

    2  Sanchez, Jessica   12,000

    3  Dixon, Colton   8,700 **

    4  Laine, Skylar   5,300

    5  Testone, Elise   3,900

    6T  Cavanagh, Hollie   3,200 *

    6T  Ledet, Joshua   3,200

The only way this data could possibly predict anything is if there’s a Shock Boot of Colton Dixon, and it’s much more likely that after a weak performance, his fans would rally to protect him (a well-documented effect on WNTS).

Is there an official adds date yet for Adam single #2. Obviously BTIKM has peaked so I’m not quite sure what they’re waiting for. Ideally you want a song to have some decent to good radio play by the time the album drops. Could RCA make a bigger hash of this? Kris better kill it on Idol tonight or I’ll say TVOL could be DOA.

The rumors of Daughtry failing are premature. Obviously they’re not the force they were, but six years past his season, Chris still is doing fine.

  • mickeybordentwo

Thank you for the weekly Twitter numbers. I always find them intriguing.

I do have a question. Are the lower ratings for Idol reflected in lower Twitter numbers for this year’s class? Or are the numbers fairly consistent (top to bottom) between last year’s Idolettes and this year’s?

  • Anonymous

So Colton has the most twitter followers? I’m going to LMAO if he gets the boot tonight. I’ve yet to see much correlation between twitter followers and much that matters on Idol …including sales (sady).

  • Anonymous

There’s no way that Adam’s new single can get decent a decent amount of airplay before the album is released.  It makes more sense to get a few stations to spin the song before its add date, and then use any data that they collect from those spins to promote the song to other stations.

TVOL needs more than an AI appearance.  At this point it also needs help from the stations that are spinning it.  It needs those stations to increase the song’s rotation, as well as play it during peak hours.  Hopefully, that would encourage other stations to play the song.

Brian May is looking into the possibility of a third Queen concert with Adam, since the first two sold out “instantaneously.” He’s unhappy about tickets being bought for resale:

there isn’t an adds date for NCOE yet.  I think that they just sent it to US and Canada radio this week (it didn’t even have a mediabase entry until late tuesday or something).  But a few stations in the US and Canada (and elsewhere) have started playing it and it will get at least a few adds next week.  I suspect it will move more quickly that BTIKM, but its not going to be anywhere close to peaking at the time of cd release.

I don’t think an Idol performance, however great or terrible, can save or kill a song.  I’m sure Kris will perform well, and I’m sure the song will get a really good (although temporary) sales bump — its exactly the type of song the Idol audience will eat up with a spoon. An Idol performance is great promo, but IMO it alone can’t change the fate, for better or worse, of a song’s prospects for success.

Daughtry is doing fine.  Musical trends are cyclical — always have been.  He came onto the scene when his brand of pop rock was very popular, and lots of other bands with similar sounds were doing well and getting radio play.  It is a testament to his success that he still gets pretty good radio play (and great at hac) despite the fact that his sound is less popular now.  He is doing a lot better than a lot of other acts of the same type.  RCA knows this.  The band knows it.   Love Outta my head.   Really curious to see how it does at HAC bc it is harder edged than his usual hac stuff.  Wonder it RCA will give it an adds date (if they did I missed it)

I’m really surprised to see James Durbin’s Idol bump holding up a week later.  He’s dropped some but still not bad.

Trespassing (Deluxe)  is #43 on iTunes album chart. It was left off the list above.

  • Anonymous

Twitter followers don’t matter with sales for Idols. But the contestant last season that consistently had the #1 or #2 followers was Scotty. It’s possible that this means that Colton has a huge & passionate fanbase (never been in B3) & could very likely mean he will be in the finale (or at least top 3).

I’ve noticed he’s one of the few contestants that have consistently received tweets congratulating him on a good job from original artists. This might have an effect on increasing his Twitter followers & getting people to vote for him.

I don’t like Colton’s voice & IMO he was the worst last night. But I can see his appeal to many viewers (and no it’s not just because he’s cute). Also, he has an “Idol strategy” that makes people remember & notice him.

  • justmefornow

With him just starting his tour, maybe he can sustain some decent sales numbers.

BTW, yesterday day in Corpus Christi, Tx he’s still trying to get the crowd to sing Love Me Bad, so he doesn’t have to. lol

IIRC, albums up for pre-order don’t show up on the albums feed; they only appear on the list after they’re available for sale.

Great to see NCOE still holding up on Itunes! It has also bumped up BTIKM and WWFM, so this must be new fans. Adam has 3 songs in the Top 1000, this is very cool. I wish there was confirmation on Adam’s Idol appearance, his schedule looks really tight for May though.

  • Anonymous

Great to see David A. back on the charts.  They added his Forevermore OPM on Itunes yesterday.  I think it is #39 on the pop charts right now.  Not too bad since most of the fans have already purchased it from other suppliers.   We didn’t think that Itunes would be carrying it.  With only fan generated promotion, it will be interesting to see what happens.  Too bad David can’t sing on Idol to get a bump in sales.  I am sure that is the last thing David is thinking about right now as he digs into the culture of Chile and makes a much more important mark on the world than how many records he sells.

  • Anonymous

Oh, thanks. I wasn’t aware of that. It’s on my iTunes list on my iPhone, that’s why I was surprised it was left out.

  • Anonymous

I am holding on to the conviction that the excellence of the material and Adam’s performing talent and work ethic will make era 2 come out great in the end.
I am still getting a little tense about radio play despite this conviction.

  • mmb

No, presales do show up on the iTunes store top 200 list ( or top100 on iTunes for iPhone). I think we just haven’t been including presales on this thread for anyone since they are not yet released ( or I presume that’s why- makes sense)

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

I know that iTunes shows presales but isn’t the daily list compiled from a feed that actually isn’t on iTunes itself? It’s just a webpage that has iTunes information but you don’t have to open iTunes to see it. This: http://ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wpa/MRSS/topalbums/sf=143441/limit=0/rss.xml This list doesn’t include presales.

From what I can remember, this class is doing as well or better than last year.

Idol is making an effort to promote the twitter handle of each contestant, so I think that is helping despite the lower ratings.

  • Anonymous

I was excited to see David’s Forevermore album up on iTunes last night. That was a surprise! I think a fan just stumbled across it while searching so I’m impressed that its charting essentially without promo.

What I was most excited about though was that it seems to be available on iTunes worldwide. There were fans checking the iTunes stores in every country that has iTunes available and I’m pretty sure it was listed in all of them. I have no idea how they managed that! Most of those countries still don’t have his other albums available.

Is that something to do with record label? Does that constrain an artist to only releasing in certain countries? I would be interested in finding out how they did that.

I know there were a lot of happy fans in many countries though. I hope his manager sends out a tweet about it from David’s account so that even more people know that its available now.

  • justmefornow

The sound quality on HTH was crap, they were way too close to the speakers. But I love how he nailed the last high note, this would have been the perfect ending to that great performance last week on Idol.

Some of these venues look really interesting. lol

  • Avari

Thanks for explanation that the daily itunes lists posted by Pam come from a feed, and not from the lists visible in one’s own actual itunes application. Pre-sales do show up in the albums list in everyone’s own itunes application, but they apparently don’t show up in the feed.

In case anyone is interested, here is where any American Idols  show up in my own (Canadian) itunes information, at exactly 12:01 PM EDT (and I’m taking this from my phone, which only shows top 100):

    Singles – Overall
    #21– Stronger (Kelly)
    #57 Good Girl (Carrie)
#62 – Never Close our Eyes (Adam)

    Singles – Pop
    #13 & #52 – Stronger (Kelly)
#32 – Never Close our Eyes (Adam)

    Albums – Overall
    #38 & #53 & #77 AI Top 7 (various compilations)
    #64 & #87 Tresspassing (Adam)

    Albums – Pop
    #6 & #11 & #16 AI Top 7 (various compilations)
    #12 Tresspassing (Adam)
    #34 & #48 Stronger (Kelly)
    #43 & #51 Forevermore (David A)
    # 54 AI Top 8 (compilation)

I didn’t see any other American Idols are in any of the top 100 in Canadian Itunes. (didn’t check Country) However,  Glee, Carly Rae, Chris Rene, One Direction, Hedley and Maroon 5 are all over the place. I didn’t see any Voice performances though.

Speaking of twitter and last season’s contestants, Scotty just hit 500K last night:))

I know it doesn’t mean a whole lot, but the closest after that is Lauren with almost 300K, then Haley, etc.  Scotty is 10K short of a million Facebook likes, with Lauren the next at a little over 200K…

  • http://twitter.com/stootle56 Sharon

I am happy to see the numbers for Lauren’s tour with Sugarland look good. I think this tour will bring in more new fans for Lauren. I feel Lauren is extremely talented and has grown so much since Idol. I saw her in Orlando with Jason Aldean and look forward to seeing her on this new tour with Sugarland.

  • Anonymous

James re-entered the BB200 at number #72.  Not bad.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

I do have a question. Are the lower ratings for Idol reflected in lower Twitter numbers for this year’s class? Or are the numbers fairly consistent (top to bottom) between last year’s Idolettes and this year’s?

Numbers are higher this year at both top and bottom. At Top 5 on 5/1 last year, McCreery had ~111,000 followers, and Lusk hadn’t quite reached 41,000. (here’s the thread — for some reason, I can’t see comments for the more comparable 4/21 thread). I know off-hand that the T7 and T6 eliminations were from the middle and top of the pack for followers, so Lusk’s numbers represent the real low end.

  • Kitwana

All the best to David A on his Forevermore CD finally being sold on iTunes. I doubt they expect big numbers from ITunes sales since there is no single in North America and no David to promote or do press. 39 on Pop and 263 overall is not bad. The label probably still expects most sales to come from Asia where there is good radio play, a music video and active promotion. I wonder how many CDs you have to sell to break even where the CD was recorded in 3 days and contains covers.

  • Anonymous

No big deal but for the sake of accuracy Lauren’s facebook is at 281k…..

I agree twitter followers don’t matter but it shows popularity and sometimes it tells you people are interested in the contestant. Colton orst when it comes to vocals, imo but we can’t deny the fact that he is the most charismatic among the contestants and he has so much stage presence. That’s what he has going for him and it’s not a bad thing because these days, I don’t think it’s all about vocals. you need something extra. It reminds me of Chris Rene. He got lots of criticism for his vocals just because  he doen’s belt and wasn’t great at covering other peoples song but look at him now. He’s everywhere on the itunes chart in more than 20 countries. Simon got it right with him, imo. He just had something that all the other contestants lacked on xfactor last season and no, it wasn’t his story lol! He commanded the stage like a pro. That’s Colton this year. Good for him!

I agree that great performance skills get you noticed. I think Chris Rene has great performance skills. But I also think he’s done so well because he has an original song out & he’s a rapper which is never on talent shows. I’m not trying to downplay his performance skills, but these other things do matter.

Performance skills matter on talent shows, but it’s still up to the contestant to put out good music afterwards. Bo Bice, Crystal Bowersox, Carly Smithson, etc. all had great performance skills on Idol, but their post-Idol careers have not had much success. Talent show contestants are forgotten very easily if they don’t put out good music. Performance skills only get you so far in the music industry.

  • Anonymous

just because they don’t sell a lot of albums doesn’t mean they aren’t putting out good music.

  • Lovesyesha

You forgot to mention that Pia is ahead of Haley in both twitter followers AND facebook fans, and James is ahead of both for facebook fans. These are not true indicators of popularity.

  • Anonymous

I’m not saying that only selling albums means you’re putting out good music. I don’t understand the popularity of Ke$ha or Bieber, but they sell. Good music includes great written songs.

My point was to a previous comment that Chris Rene is doing well on the charts because of an “it factor.” Many contestants over the years had an “it factor” on Idol & other talent shows. I could say Taylor Hicks had an “it factor.” It’s up to the contestant to do well after the show. That’s my point.

  • Anonymous

Very true! We all know about so many shitty music doing well won the charts and with sale. I hope tides turn around for good music to take the fore front, *sigh*. I’m very hopeful about Chris Rene’s album though. He’s an artist who connects very well with his lyrics becaus his lyrics are always him. He writes about himself and that connects.

“But I also think he’s done so well because he has an original song out & he’s a rapper which is never on talent shows”

Chris will tell you he’s a “RINGER”, not a rapper lol!

  • Anonymous

The whole point is to produce music that people like, and want to buy, and the people who are topping the charts are doing that.  One of the problems that the idol alums have had is that they aren’t making music that is relevant to what mainstream audiences want.  And those who would appeal more to a niche audience aren’t going to find the support that they need at most major labels.

We have a lot of talented, but somewhat pretentious idol alums, who have resisted the guidance of their labels A&R department, or who have been forced to produce music that will appeal to AI fans, but not current music buyers.

Frankly, I think that Chris Rene is doing well, because LA Reid is promoting him in a way that idol alums haven’t been promoted.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

I think there’s a correlation, not a causation:)  Twitter and Facebook numbers are indicators of popularity, with potential confounds…for example, for a long time, Haley didn’t play the game so why would even an ardent fan follow her?  Her numbers went up after her performance and she’s been tweeting more…

And I don’t think people follow someone they’re not interested in at all;)

Bottom line, more people following at least should mean more people aware of what you’re doing, whether they buy your music or vote for you (or not) is a different question…

  • Anonymous

‘The whole point is to produce music that people like, and want to buy, and the people who are topping the charts are doing that.’

    I’m never sure about this.

Do we *really* buy the music that matches our own preferences, and because we’ve compared it to the other musical options and decided that we “like” it better? Given the way music sales and radio are set up, how much do we even know of the other options?

Or does the major-label-linked-with-the-rest-of-big-media “star system” and the have-just-a-few-radio-stations-playing-a-few-songs-so-advertisers-can-reach-everybody-at-once mode limit our knowledge of what’s out there so severely that we don’t even get to develop real preferences?

Seems to me that the industry may consolidate its own take, and that of its advertisers, by promoting some people so heavily as the sole and only stars worth listening to that we find ourselves “preferring” them and buying their stuff mainly because they appear to be a huge huge fad and people are herd animals and thus primed to be crowd-followers. I would bet that a heck of a lot of music is sold because it’s a fad and for no other reason. And the reason we have those fads in music is because it suits the corporate suits to set up the system that way — it’s much easier for them to consolidate their revenues by making sure that we all believe that Ke$ha is so much better than all alternatives that we won’t even look at all the other musicians that are out there.

I think it’s pretty clear that this is a major reason why the major labels and advertisers have been so extremely leery of the Internet and tried to fight off mp3s and so on. They’re scared to death that if we actually had easy access to the wide variety of music that musicians make, a large proportion of us wouldn’t necessarily choose their “superstars” and they’d lose some of their money and a lot of their power.

  • Anonymous

We have a lot of talented, but somewhat pretentious idol alums, who have resisted the guidance of their labels A&R department, or who have been forced to produce music that will appeal to AI fans, but not current music buyers.

What exactly is “pretentious” about AI alum albums?  None of these people are emulating Phillip Glass, or even Deerhoof.

And I’m confused that the same A&R representatives that advocate for the appeal to mainstream audiences for “resistant” artists can simultaneously sacrifice that wisdom and focus solely on the appeal to AI audiences for “compliant” ones.

David A.’s Forevermore was #32 on the pop itunes chart a short while ago. It makes me happy to see this.  No TV performances or promotion by a label, no chance of seeing him on tour for 2 years, and he still can sell albums.  I love the album.  There are no bells and whistles…just David’s voice front and center.

I have a question (but I don’t want to bother Pam again) – if anyone knows, could you explain it to me?  It says on the Billboard 200 list that James Durbin re-entered at #72.  Then on the Top Current Albums chart it says he re-entered at #67.  Does anyone know what the difference is between these two charts and why his placement is different?  Where does the Top Current Albums chart come from?

Idol performances still have the power to give nice sales bumps. Last week James got a big boost, and tonight Kris is getting a nice boost at all.

TVOL was out of the Top 1000 on iTunes this morning. Right now, it is up to #165 on overall chart.

The pre-order for his upcoming album is at #130 on overall iTunes chart. More surprising is the fact that KATA has made a return to the chart, sitting at #787.

One last check before bed — it’s up to 150.

elliegrll, bringing the 60-65% conversation here as directed.  So are you saying that the 60-65% number to breakeven is just a myth that has been created by this place?

You know you can sell 100% of tickets and STILL not breakeven right?  If the costs to stage a production outweigh the income generated from it, then you don’t breakeven.
