In celebration of Idol Gives Back, the Top 8 will be singing “Inspirational” songs Tuesday night. Yes, amidst all of the IGB hype, there is still a competition going on!

This week’s theme is the broadest yet, and can mean just about anything, really. I put together a list of the songs I’d like the Idols to sing. What songs “inspire” you? Post your thoughts in comments!

PS: Next week–Mariah Carey mentors.

My picks are after the Jump…

  • Brooke White – “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon
  • Jason Castro – “Shelter” by Ray LaMontagne
  • Syesha Mercado – “Ooh Child” by the 5 Stairsteps
  • Michael Johns – “Heroes” by David Bowie
  • David Cook – “What’s So Funny ’bout Peace Love and Understanding” by Elvis Costello (thanks for the suggestion, cheese!)
  • David Archuleta – “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” by the Hollies
  • Kristy Lee Cook – “You Light Up My Life” by LeAnn Rimes
  • Carly Smithson – “Beautiful Day” by U2

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

Elvis Costello covering Nick Lowe, David Bowie and the Five Stairsteps? Yes, please.

    MJ, great list as always.

  • GwendolynD

I like the idea of KLC singing “You Light Up My Life,” but I would love it if Brooke sang it…with only the piano. That could work wonders for her.

I wouldn’t mind Archie singing “Waiting on the World” again.

  • t2

Can we switch David Archuletta and Michael John’s song because I would fall to the floor if Michael Johns sang He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.

  • nmc

I love me some Ray L and Jason Castro…but honestly, I like Kelly Clarkson’s version of Shelter better than Ray’s–which makes me think that I would love to hear Brooke sing it, not Jason.

I know it’s a little country, but I could hear Carly singing The Power of One by Bomshel.

    That’s all I got.

  • Steph

I love the idea of someone doing Ray LaMontagne!! That would be wonderful. Good call, MJ!

  • minoxp

    Mariah Carey? Ewww =/

  • abbysee

MJ, great suggestions. I would love to hear any of the remaining idols do Shelter. I am almost sure someone will. Since Carrie sang the George Michael song that was my choice for Archie’s birth year, I can’t reuse that one, but am glad someone will sing it. It’s a beautiful song.

I actually thought it would be nice for Archie to sing “Waiting” again. If Kristy sing Amazing Grace though, never mind.

    Ok, my picks

Syesha: Love’s in Need of Love by Stevie Wonder
Carly: I Want to Know What Love is
    Jason: Redemption Song Bob Marley
Archie: Blowing in The Wind Dylan as covered by Stevie Wonder
    Brooke: Hero Bette Midler
David: Will the Circle be Unbroken (dont know who wrote) David can rock it up or tone it down
Michael: Lean on Me Bill Withers
Kristy: who cares, but I guess Amazing Grace would be the cynical choice

  • beachn

Where are the stylists this year ? The only one who consistently
dresses stylish is Syesha. Brooke looks like she wore a janitor’s
    jumpsuit on IGB.

I think Kristy will sing Will the Circle be Unbroken or Amazing Grace.
Of course if she really wants to be Ms Inspiration she will sing
God Bless America while wearing the flag. LOL

  • gabam

    Jason Castro – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Shelterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Ray LaMontagne

MJ, Jason said in an interview that Ray LaMontagne is one of his favorite major singers. It would be cool if he picks the same song that you picked.

  • Allison

I’d die if I could hear some Elvis Costello on Idol.

  • cheese

Great choices, mj! I especially like your pick for DCook ;)

At this point I think I’ll be disappointed if Jason doesn’t sing Shelter and David doesn’t sing WSFBPL&U (I’d actually like him to do the slower version that Nick Lowe usually sings – he could add a lot of grit to it a la the Chris Cornell version floating around on YouTube)

I hope they have really short “intro videos” this week so they can hopefully give them two full minutes for their songs. It’s hard to make an impact in 90 seconds.

  • jersey

    Any particular Elvis song “Allison”?

  • cats w/ shades

I could see Micheal Johns doing the Elvis Casello song than David Cook.

  • cats w/ shades

Which someone had listed yesterday on the main Ai board for daivid C to sing.

  • cats w/ shades

Probably did not know , it happens people have the same good idea give credit to that person too…..Daivd C has to do a complete 360 in song choice ,last week was still a little rock for me, a pure soft song maybe a ballad show a real soft side. I do not think he will , that will surprise me .

“The wind beneath My Wind ” a girl
“Into the West” anne lennex maybe Daivd C.(inspired by a young man who had cancer.

  • GwendolynD

PS: Next weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Mariah Carey mentors.

    …and I’ve heard they’re singing Mariah’s songs. :blink_tb:

  • primeminister

I’d bet 10 points that Jason will sing Shelter.

I’d bet another 5 that his performance will be called “boring” “the same ole” “coffeehouse” etc….

If Jason’s performance order is anywhere from 1-4, and all of the above happens, I’ll bet 20 he’s leaving us this week.

I say all this as a big Jason fan. If he DOES end up singing Shelter (which I would personally love, but don’t see the general Idol audience “getting it”), I hope he does the Kelly Clarkson ACOUSITC version of it and just stands in front of a mike stand to sing. So many things could go wrong…but hopefully, some miracle will happen, and he’ll have another MOMENT.

    C’est tout.

    (Excellent picks, mj!)

  • JJ

    OK, I’ll Play

Syesha: I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
Carly: Lose Yourself by Eminem (It would be the greatest moment in AI History)
Jason: Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel
Archie: The Rose by Bette Midler (I bet Archie can appreciate the Divine Miss M)
Brooke: You Light Up My Life by Debby Boone (Please don’t tell me I’m the only one that has seen the similarities)
David: I Feel Good by James Brown
Michael: What a Wonderful World (would love to hear some satchmo)
Kristy: The Eye of the Tiger (maybe this will finally get her off my TV screen)

  • flair1

I recommend “(Pride) In the Name of Love”-U2 for David Cook to honor MLK during the 40th anniversary of his assination.

  • dukesterathlete

David A- “Angels” by Robbie Williams or “I’ll Be” by Edwin Mccain…”He Ain’t Heavy” is also a
    good choice

    Brooke- “Angel” Sarah Malachlan
“Man In The Mirror” …I kno its by michael jackson, but i would love to see brooke just
sit down at the piano and sing this
“Like a Star” by Corinne Bailey Ray- her audition song!
“Meaning” by Gavin DeGraw, once again piano she could play->http://youtube.com/watch?v=f_g46cgjtwg

Jason- “Shelter” would be fantastic…i remember downloading Ray’s version after i heard Kelly
Clarkson sing it for that massive tidal wave thing
“Don’t Dream it’s Over” would still be a good choice
“Meaning” maybe i just like this song, but i could see em both doin it
    “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong
“You Are So Beautiful to Me”…Jasons got a lot to pick from
“Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton

Michael J- “One” By U2 or “Candle in the Wind” by mr Elton John

Carly- “Reflection”, corny i know, but i could see her doing that
she just needs to pick a big big song that everyone knows and nail it…cuz she can

Kristy- she just needs to sing something completely cheesy and completely bomb it if she ants to stay…no joke.

    ok I’m done

  • dukesterathlete

haha JJ…um, is that list serious?…with the exception of kristy’s choice and the reasoning behind it (which i agree with) i think that would be a memorable night in idol history.

  • JJ

haha JJà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦um, is that list serious?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦with the exception of kristyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s choice and the reasoning behind it (which i agree with) i think that would be a memorable night in idol history.

Pretty much. I always try to think of ways to get Kristy Lee off the show.

  • dukesterathlete

u would think that by now, Idol would have her “taken care of”..haha

  • grayhound

Just a response to the comment upthread about where are the stylists?

I’m pretty sure that in previous years all of the contestants get a shopping allowance and go out and buy their own stuff. Now I would assume that they would get feedback from a stylist, but maybe not. And also, my info. may only be applicable for the top 4, or 5 or whatever, so take this w/a grain of salt.

  • colette

    David Cook — my fave:

    “People Get Ready” (Curtis Mayfield)

“Blowin in the Wind” (punked up!)

“Woodstock” by Joni Mitchell (Crosby, Stills & Nash rocked it, and it was great that way)

“Change the World” (Babyface — sung badly last season by ??)

“Get Up! Stand Up!” (Bob Marley classic — Tracy Chapman covers this so well)

  • bean99

I’m sure about Michael doing Heroes, MJ, but I’ve only heard the song off of youtube. I’m still bitter since I heard that Michael wanted to do Never Tear us Apart by INXS during 80′s week but was told by the producers that nobody would know it. :annoyed_tb:

  • GwendolynD

    David Cook à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ my fave:

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“People Get Readyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Curtis Mayfield)

    Love this one….!

  • justshootme

Much as I love Jason Castro and would really enjoy hearing him do Shelter (or any other Ray Lamontagne), I think it would pretty much be suicide for him as far as his time on AI is concerned. I want Castro to be true to himself, but call me selfish, I’d like him around a couple more weeks. I think he should do something more dynamic that more people are familiar with. Not sure what.

  • tinawina

I can’t even begin to guess, because there are SO MANY choices. But Syesha will sing something by Whitney, Aretha or Gladys. LMAO.

I do think it’s do or die week for Brooke though. She’s had 2-3 middling performances in a row, and she needs to put herself back in the game.

By contrast, I don’t think there is much Kristy Lee can do at this point. Her time should be just about up. Unless she wears a low cut dress and sings God Bless America. LOL. Oh wait, she’ll pull out something religious instead… play the Jesus card. Ok, she may have one more week left in her.

I expect this to be a fairly good night. Mariah Carey week on the other hand? I’m scared. :-(

  • primeminister

My thoughts exactly. Unless he closes the show and Shelter is dubbed a “moment” instead of a bore, he could be in trouble. Of course, I would love to see him take this risk and succeed…but I think the chances are slim. (Please prove me wrong, Jason.)

  • Karen

Syesha will probably pull out Whitney’s “The Greatest Love of All”. Sheesh.

  • justshootme

Primeminister …last I checked, “I Shall Be Released” was winning the poll at Castrotopia. I think maybe that would be a wiser choice. Similiar vibe but more familiar to the average viewer.

Random trivia …Kenny Loggins son did WSFAPLAU (whew) on Rock the Cradle last week.

  • GwendolynD

I think I’d like “Ooh, Child” for Syesha. She could even sing “I’ll Take You There” by The Staples Singers.

    Syesha will probably pull out Whitneyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Greatest Love of Allà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Oh, no. Please don’t say that out loud. :eek_wp:

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

I think Kristy Lee Cook should sing I Hope You Dance by Leeann Womack.

That oughta do the trick. (bye bye).

  • MN Sue

Let’s face facts, folks. KLC could sing any song and we’d all gag.

  • MN Sue

I’ll vote for anyone who inspires me with an acapella number (David C? Jason? Carly?). A mix of confidence and sincerety without bandzilla would be too much to resist. Plus, that person will probably get the pretty light from above.

  • primeminister

And, not to mention, the PIMP spot.

I think it’s critical this week, with so much going on, not to perform first (unless your name is David).

  • primeminister

Jason- the acoustic version of Switchfoot’s Let Your Love Be Strong

  • vixen

i’d actually rather hear dcook do “heroes” than mj, but that’s probably just ’cause he’s my favorite.

a lot of people have suggested aerosmith’s “dream on” for cookie as well, which would be AWESOME.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

There are some really good suggestions in this thread. I’d love to hear Jason sing “Shelter” too, but maybe not in the context of this show. It might not work on the big stage. I do think that anything by Switchfoot would be good for him. I love them, and I’d love to hear him sing one of their songs.

If Kristy sings “Amazing Grace”… :sealed_tb:

Also, I’m not sure I understand what was “too rock” about David C last week. That’s who he is as an artist. When he gets off the show, that’s the kind of music he’s going to be making. I mean, yeah, for the purpose of the competition, he needs to change things up a bit from time to time. But every contestant always needs to keep who they are at the forefront, because the purpose of the show, imo, is to show people the kind of album you’re going to be making. I mean, is Michael Johns “too blues”? Is Kristy “too country”? Are Brooke and Jason “too folksy”? Or is it just that David Cook is “too rock”?

  • manny

David Cook can never be “too rock” for me. I hope he comes out full guns with a screaming rock anthem this week just to contrast with all the sweetness and sugar that we all know will be this weeks show. Seeing the Clark Brothers this week reminded me a their great Gimme Shelter. I wouldn’t mind DC taking on that.

  • jpfan

Supposedly Our Lady Peace has posted on their MySpace that David Cook is doing their song Innocent.

  • http://www.xanga.com/Cynarajane CJ

Ooh! Good news, jpfan! That’ll be awesome!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Ooooh interesting!! Thanks, jpfan! He loves OLP (lists them as one of his fave bands), so that actually does not surprise me at all. *goes to listen* :)

ETA: I bet he will be called “indulgent” by Simon though.

  • jersey

Since this is inspirational song night, Simon may feel the need to use that word too often. I think he’ll avoid the word on Tuesday night.

  • manny

Here is the posting on their website:

    http://www.ourladypeace.com/

  • LaFonda

    Michael Johns: “Lean On Me”

Brooke White: “What if God was one of us?” by _________
*she would do a beautiful job playing this on the piano and singing

David Cook: “Daydream Believer” by the Monkees punked up

Carly Smithson: “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” by Starship
In my estimation, the perfect song choice for her. The judges will love it.

David Archuletta: “Waiting on the World to Change” by John Mayer”

Jason Castro “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.. with the guitar and the lights dimmed!

Kristy Lee Cook “Anyway” by Martina McBride
good song choice for her. very right wing song and inspirational.

Syesha Mercado “Dawning of the Age of Aquarius” or “Let Every Nation Sing”

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

All I know is that I will vote for him (which I would do anyway) solely for the reason that he’s not doing a dreary ballad.

    Thank you, DC!!

  • baxter

Interesting choice DC. Since I am not familiar with this song or band, I am very curious to hear it on AI.

OLP nice pr!!! Now that’s the way to help yourself. Bet they have major hits on their myspace page not to metion their downloads are up on Thursday….:)

Bet they never thought to get a call to release one of their songs on AI…heheheh!!!

    Rock On, DC!!

  • marco5ny

It’s too much to hope for but I think Brooke can follow in the footsteps of Theresa Sokyrka who sang an amazing cover of Good Mother by Jann Arden.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

All I know is that I will vote for him (which I would do anyway) solely for the reason that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not doing a dreary ballad.

    Yep!

Thank goodness for diversity, right? I like ballads in general, but simple pretty ones. Not overwrought shouting fests with runs and riffs. Should be an interesting night.

ETA: “Yep” was meant as an agreement about ballads. My votes will prolly go to Jason unless something weird with the universe happens.

  • MN Sue

The universe will be aligned just fine, pj, vote Jason, JASON, JASON

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

MN Sue, you know I will. LOL.

Anyone know if it’s a crazy four hours of voting like last year? *hopes not*

  • MN Sue

I hope we get the extra hours. My work schedule keeps me from voting and from chat. Something tells me Jason might need me this week.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s too much to hope for but I think Brooke can follow in the footsteps of Theresa Sokyrka who sang an amazing cover of Good Mother by Jann Arden.

Oooooh, that would be a great song for her.

Was Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel” mentioned anywhere up thread? I think Brooke or Carly would sound lovely on that.

  • merlyhaggard

Why do I have the feeling that Kristy will sing Amazing Grace…I should be wrong coz’ she would ruin that song!

I was totally thinking of I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing for David Cook..

Carly could take on any big song as she has the pipes for it!

Voices That Care for David Archuleta!

I don’t have any other inspirational songs in mind (I’m not even sure if I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing is inspirational, but it doesn’t matter since we already know that Cook is not singing that)

  • Rosalee

Okay – I’ve got some wacky, “uplifting” choices. They’ll never use them , but here goes:

Syesha – “Fame” – (the Irene Cara song)
Carly – “Beautiful” – Carole King
Brooke – “Save the Country” – Laura Nyro
Kristy – “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” – Jackie De Shannon (cheesy)
David C – “Spirit in the Sky” – Norman Greenbaum
or “People Get Ready” – Curtis Mayfield
David A – “Good Morning Starshine” (from Hair/Oliver) (real cheesy)
    or “People Get Ready”
Michael Johns – “Maybe I’m Amazed” – Paul McCartney
    or “People Get Ready”
Jason Castro – “I Can See Clearly Now” – Johnny Nash
    or “People Get Ready”

It’s getting too late at night to think about this…..I’m out of “inspiration”

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Rosalee, you don’t want any of the guys to sing “People Get Ready”, do you?? :)

  • joslyni

Inspirational songs will all be compared to the originator unfortunately. For Andrew Lloyd Webber week:

Brooke White – “You must love me” by Madonna
Jason Castro – “No matter what” by Boyzone
Syesha Mercado – “Memory” from Cats
Michael Johns – “What’s the Buzz” from JCS
David Cook – “Judas’ Song” from JCS
David Archuleta – “Love Changes Everything”
Kristy Lee Cook – “Whistle down the wind” by Tina Arena
Carly Smithson – “Tyre Tracks and Broken Hearts” by Bonnie Tyler (I really wish Amanda was around to do this instead…on her album maybe…)

  • LaFonda

Has anybody else heard that Kristy Lee Cook is singing “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw? Supposedly she was considering it. I don’t know if she followed through. If so it would be a great song choice for her. KLC usually is good on song choice, so if she didn’t pick that I’m sure she picked something else good.
