Ahh, thanks Kirsten. I knew about the KCHZ format change but didn't bother to look closely at Kris's adds (or TOML's spins) to notice that was the culprit, and that Mediabase hasn't caught up yet.

KCHZ was an interesting case because they apparently made the programming switch based on new data about listener trends and audience size as Arbitron moves from diary-based audience tracking to the PPM system in the KC market. The press release about the format switch mentioned specifically the addition of Daughtry, David Cook, and Kelly Clarkson to KCHZ's new playlist (the release actually made it sound more like a switch to HAC then CHR, but whatev'). It appears that similar shake-ups are happening in a lot of the markets where PPM has been introduced. Early results seem to indicate that the diary system led to over-estimation of the audience for certain formats such as Talk and Rhythmic, and under-estimation of some of the adult-leaning mainstream formats and stations. I'm sure the PPM program is making some ad sales managers very twitchy right about now.

I'm pretty sure Mediabase has an HAC, AC, or CHR station incorrectly tagged as Rhythmic in their monitoring system right now.

Last week, KCHZ in Kansas City added LLWD and Mediabase called it Rhythmic.

Like many stations, it has had a lot of format changes over the years. In 2005, it became a Rhythmic station, but over the years, it's moved closer to CHR (Top 40) and officially switched over to that format on October 8, 2009 (and started adding Rockish songs).

That probably explains most of the Rhytmic spins. Mediabase just hasn't updated yet.

Hey girlygirl - I wouldn't be tremendously surprised if LLWD got some legitimate Rhythmic spins, but there has also been an apparent station classification error in Mediabase over the past two weeks that might be causing this. David Cook's Time of My Life has logged 18 Rhythmic spins in that timeframe according to the QuickCut, after a year and a half of...um, pretty much zero Rhythmic airplay. LOL. I'm pretty sure Mediabase has an HAC, AC, or CHR station incorrectly tagged as Rhythmic in their monitoring system right now. That kind of thing happens occasionally (either a glitch or sometimes due to station format changes), and usually gets resolved sooner or later in the QC.

LLWD has gotten nearly 1000 spins in the past week. Interestingly, it's even gotten 15 spins on stations classified as rhythmic. Prior to the last 7 days, it had gotten 0 spins on those stations. The spins on pop stations in the past 7 days are nearly double those on Hot AC

Thanks for the info, ladymadonna. I'm not a constant radio listener but this is almost literally the only station in my area that isn't Country or Christian so it's what I listen to. The playlist is pretty okay for me, except for the darn Fireflies and way too much Daughtry/Nickelback for my taste. I hope they sink their teeth into LLWD like they seem to do with some of their playlist.

And if they could see their way to spinning some Adam and Allison too I'll be pretty darn happy!

It doesn't appear Jive has given up promoting LLWD or Kris quite yet.

Given up? The promo push has barely gotten started for Kris and the other S8 Idols. LLWD is showing some nice solid spincreases on CHR and HAC, and lots of good adds (that Cumulus block always helps). But patience, grasshoppers. Kris's AI is still largely driven by a single market (single station, really, though the WPLJ add will help broaden his exposure in NYC). He's going to have to triple or quadruple his current cumulative AI before the song starts to reach a level of familiarity that will stabilize and ultimately lift the sales numbers. That's going to take several weeks at least. If Jive timed things right, things will start to tip and he'll really start to gain traction right around when the album drops.

I agree that the sluggish sales numbers are troubling, but as numbers-focused as I am, I also firmly believe that each Idol is going to forge their own path. I didn't have a strong favorite this year, but I'm certainly having fun watching their roll-outs, and can't wait to see what kind of artists they evolve into and how well the market embraces each of them.

I think it's classified as HAC, but honestly it's playlist comes straight off the itunes Top20 minus some of the rap/hip-hop songs. And once they start to play something, I usually hear it alot.

That's basically the textbook definition of HAC (aka Adult Top 40) - everything on the mainstream Top 40 minus most rap and hip-hop. In terms of chart behavior and programming focus, HAC really has more in common with CHR than AC. HAC plays more recurrents than CHR and typically maintains a larger playlist, but they do put songs into power-rotation. On HAC this is usually 50-60 spins/week, compared to upwards of 100 spins a week for CHR power rotation.

Turned on my radio today, cranked up the volume and LLWD started blasting out at me. First time I've heard it here (not too far from DC) and it brought a big smile to my face. This station seems fairly slow to add new songs so I was actually surprised to hear it already. After it played the DJ gave Kris' name and then told listeners we should go to his website to watch Kris' Britney cover video.

ETA: just checked and this is B101.5 which is also widely heard in the DC area. I think it's classified as HAC, but honestly it's playlist comes straight off the itunes Top20 minus some of the rap/hip-hop songs. And once they start to play something, I usually hear it alot.

LLWD on Pop radio
LW TW
69 50 KRIS ALLEN Live Like We're Dyin' ¦ 572 218 354 4.342

The song has 354 more spins this week that last. It's doing very well on the radio.

That is a big increase from where it was before. So, that should theoretically start translating to downloads. I know there's a timing issue too, so maybe we just have to wait a bit longer to see the effect.

Hmm, interesting. On the one hand, you don't want to waste the tv appearances on a single that isn't catching on with the public. On the other '“ with the video and iTunes banner (plus increased spins), things could certainly change for the better rather quickly. Glad it's not my job to decide this stuff.

Hmm - well, my take is - they've already shot the mv, and an itunes banner tie-in with it is probably not loads of money - so doing both of those seems like a no brainer. This will probably happen in the next few weeks, leading up to all the promo (interviews, etc.) he'll be doing in Nov leading up to Nov 17.

IF at that point LLWD is not picking up (or staying up, if it starts a significant climb), and IF the album were to similarly underperform, then, and only then, would an alternate single make sense, imo. Maybe to roll out in Dec?

I don't know what this site is exactly, but Kris is at #5 on this list. It looks to have something to do with what musicians are getting a lot of radio play and/or promotion?

http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/vibe/vibe.cgi?rank5

And it looks like Kris is lined up for a lot of the big shows once his album drops (Conan, Ellen, Regis & Kelly...)

It doesn't appear Jive has given up promoting LLWD or Kris quite yet. Kris had 4 separate radio interviews today that I know of, plus the interview with Lyndsey Parker (which she will post tomorow) as a tandem to her blog about the 8 songs she got to hear. He also supposedly pre-taped ANOTHER interview to air on Z-100 on Monday -- when it is expected he will be named as one of the acts for that station's JingleBall. That will be the 3rd separate radio station "JingleBall" type concert he has already been booked to perform on (going along with the one in Sacramento and the one in Buffalo), not to mention he still has the Napa gig in November, the gig with the Fray in Chicago in early December and the GMA Concert on November 17.

Throw in the fact that Kris is getting mainly positive press, and I doubt Jive is anywhere close to throwing in the towel on him. The sales numbers aren't great, but the radio spins are strong and the reviews are strong.

Thank you, girlygirl for the link to the yahoo music article!!!! I sometimes think if it wasn't for you, I'd never read any real news about Kris Allen here. It often seems it's the 'Adam' channel with the same topic featured over and over. (No offense to MJ, I know she posts based on what people submit and that she is a huge Adam fan. I like Adam too, It's just reached the saturation point for me.)

I am stoked for this album to arrive. I would love if they released another of single soon.

That is awesome that he wrote/co-wrote on 9 songs of the 12. Such a shame that the first single was one he had no real hand in. I still like it, but it's a shame knowing what Kris was capable of delivering.

I'm not worried about any of these numbers. I've never bought music or based what I liked on numbers before, and I'm not going to start now.

Speaking of which, I did buy Bob Dylan's Christmas album and I love it. It's perfect family and friends around the house with everyone having a little too much holiday cheer singing along to holiday songs. Seems to me that's the effect he was after.

Thank you, girlygirl for the link to the yahoo music article!!!! I sometimes think if it wasn’t for you, I’d never read any real news about Kris Allen here. It often seems it’s the ‘Adam’ channel with the same topic featured over and over. (No offense to MJ, I know she posts based on what people submit and that she is a huge Adam fan. I like Adam too, It’s just reached the saturation point for me.)

I think she meant all together he cowrite or write 9,but some of the songs she listed we're not written at all by Kris, because one song she review that was one of the one's she didn't like as much she said wasn't written at all by Kris.
