Thank you, Ladymadonna. Just to clarify, I have thanked Kirsten and Brian Mansfield each week when posting my figures. I have used rounded numbers (Brian Mansfield) when the exact figures weren't available (Kirsten). It's merely basic math, hopefully getting it right. Keeping track of 23 singles, more or less, each week, plus 2 album compilations, working with rounded figures and exact figures, at times made me cross-eyed, again hoping I didn't overlook anything. I'm relieved Sadiepie stated she had the exact totals for Adam as I did. I didn't want to overstate or understate the sales on either guy. And it's nice to know I'm not the only "crazy" person running these tallies. I found it interesting.

No offense taken, Sadiepie. I most certainly would have given credit, if warranted. I've written fanfiction for a few fandoms over the years and I respect any work that is posted freely for public viewing. Plagarism on any level is so not good, but as Ladymadonna noted, the numbers have been made available to the public and anyone on this board could just as well come up with the total monies earned in the exact same manner.

Thanks.

<blockquote>That said' ¦did you by chance get your non-rounded Adam figures from the official Billboard thread in Adam's forum at IDF? I ask because I run that thread, which to my knowledge is the only place keeping track of the exact figures, and I noticed the tallies you posted are identical.

No harm done really if you did indeed borrow my work, but credit where credit is due would be nice. The info didn't exactly compile itself.</blockquote>

As a fellow Idol "number geek" I appreciate the work that goes into compiling sales and airplay stats. But in evanjane's defense, those numbers are publicly available to anyone willing to put in the time and effort to find them. I myself have a tracking sheet with both rounded figures and the Soundscan actuals that have leaked for Adam, and I've never set foot at IDF in eight years of watching American Idol.

Just sayin'....

Yes when it comes to precise sales numbers you have to pay for it so you either have an account with Soundscan or professional level Billboard subscription or know someone with access to it.

Soundscan and Billboard don't compile this stuff out of the goodness of their heart - they too are businesses.

As long as an album stays in the Top 50, Hits Daily Double does give their estimated numbers every week and for example David Cook has stayed pretty much in the Top 50 since his album was released, he's fallen out here and there but since Hits Daily Double also gives you the percentage increase or decrease from lthe week before you can continue to guestimate. Math is your friend.

Evanjane,

I appreciate your efforts as well. Some people are numbers geeks & some aren't. I'm the former.

<strong>evanjane</strong>, I appreciate your efforts, and it is interesting to see for what it is. Thank you.

FWIW, I'm not reading the responses to reflect, as you say, "Adam fans" disappointment, or, as you assert, that if the numbers were different that there'd be little quarrel. The value of and appreciation for numbers and comparisons rises and falls with their accuracy and completeness, imo. Because you did say "since week 1" instead of "since the finale," the chart could be read to be something that it's not. That's all.

But I do agree that LadyMadonna is quite amazing in her collections and compilations for David Cook! Those charts are something else!! Of course, last year, we had more leaks about sales during the season too. Too bad iTunes plugged those for the most part this year. :-)

<blockquote>Where can those songs' sales numbers be found at? It would be greatly appreciated. :-)
</blockquote>
We can't get numbers for albums/singles that aren't charting. Last week Brian gave a special update and provided numbers for some uncharting titles, but he also can't get them every week (Ken Barnes had the connections and did get weekly updates, but that's not the case anymore).

As for the specific numbers for LO/Permanent - LO is likely selling 5-6K a week right now (based on how much it sold through the period in which it didn't chart, and relative iTunes placement), so an educated guess would put it at ~964K this week. It should reach Platinum by September, so that would be a good time to ask Brian for another update (or just ask him if he could update us whenever LO crosses that milestone).

Permanent, as you said, was taken off iTunes. IIRC it sold around ~170K total the last time we got official numbers. That was almost a month ago, so I'd guess at least 10K more since.

I just listened to the snippets from Michael Johns' cd, and didn't feel led to buy even one song, the only two I like are the ones I already have.

The first few songs are mostly too slow, and the last few are too frenetic. Overall impression: It's a disappointment and probably a wasted opportunity because he had the Idol momentum and goodwill for this one.

I know you post Idol weekly sales numbers from Billboard. There's a few songs some of Cook's fans are asking about out of the Hot 200 charts (<em>Light On</em> (close to going platinum as a single; last week it was at ~959K), <em>Permanent </em>[AI finale/charity single; was pulled from iTunes this Tuesday]).

Where can those songs' sales numbers be found at? It would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Nielsen SoundScan is an information system created to track sales of music and music video products throughout the United States and Canada. Data is collected weekly and made available every Wednesday to subscribers.

SoundScan is the source for the Billboard music charts. NSS tracks via POS ( point of sale ) of distributors or resellers, and products /music need to be registered so it can be tracked .

Yes Billboard charts are a good way to keep track if the artist is generating sale traffic .

Getting accumulated sales figure will depend on the date when the record company registers their product for soundscan monitoring.

I agree, whatever accumulated sales figure that will be, we will only know if Adam , Allison or Kris is of any real mettle, after they release their first album. Even that will not cement longevity.

What we can do now is just to pick up signs that may point to success. Aside from the quantifiable sales figures , there are the intangible factors that investors who finance the record companies would be using as an added gauge. Reasons why the likes of Allison would get signed ahead of the likes of Season 8's Danny . These may sound subjective , but there is still a structured basis to this decision making process.

The crystal ball to lasting success continue to be elusive. No one ,until now can put a claim to owning it. Not even American Idol producers ,more so, us, who just follow the career of certain finalists.

The best part though of having chose someone to cheer on, is that it provides one a wellspring of hope. When you see your chosen one succeed , it creates a reservoir of hope - that you too can also come up with your own version of success.

Undercooked -- Yes, I meant week 1 post-idol finale. I've been doing the totals on this thread for several weeks now, in which, I made that clear. I'm well aware after reading several of the posts that these numbers are not sitting well with Adam fans. They're only numbers. If the totals showed differently, I'm sure no one would have any complaints.

It was initially fun to do, but has taken some time to compile the figures and make sure they're accurate, barring any human error. There won't be much to report soon.

Undercooked — Yes, I meant week 1 post-idol finale. I’ve been doing the totals on this thread for several weeks now, in which, I made that clear. I’m well aware after reading several of the posts that these numbers are not sitting well with Adam fans. They’re only numbers. If the totals showed differently, I’m sure no one would have any complaints.

It was initially fun to do, but has taken some time to compile the figures and make sure they’re accurate, barring any human error. There won’t be much to report soon.

"I wonder if previous American Idol Finalists also continued to have their TV performance album sell , long after the season had closed. Album sales would be significant because this would mean the consumer's are accepting the singer's artistry in its entirety." --Animated

David Cook had significant sales during the week after Idol. I believe someone more informed could give you those figures. Last year there was no Album Compilation and if I'm not mistaken the I-tune songs were only available that week at the most. I believe David in just that week's time outsold Kris and Adam. As was stated above, time will tell what the consumers are accepting.

"Regarding total sales : Unless 19E will release the figures, I am not sure if we can tally the dollar sales of Kris and Adam's recordings from the Billboard/Nielsen Soundscan data ."---Animated

Then why report any numbers at all? It seemed significant when some in the Industry reported Adam Lambert's album was outselling Kris Allen's album. I, simply, was curious to see if that was a true representation of monies earned. Those in the record industry seem to be working with the numbers available to them as well. I don't think it should really cause such a fuss. Again it's what's sold with the "real" album that matters.
