Mandisa’s single was #2 on the BB Hot Singles Chart(measures the sales of commercial singles…physical CDs or bundled downloads) last week.

We should start seeing sales stats for albums later in the day or tomorrow. Unfortunately, Paris has fallen off the Top 200 chart and the best source for those stats is Ken Barnes at USA Today who is away until next week.

If anybody finds any Idol related numbers, please post them here. The great thing about MJs is that so many people bring information from all over the internet to post here.

And please…don’t bother with the old, tired “they bought the album instead” argument. If that was true, you would not expect to see best-selling digital downloads from those artists whose albums routinely top the SoundScan 200.

  • sammy

Hardly anyone bought Daniel Powter’s album. All they wanted was the one song. Not really a good comparison.

  • jersey

    LOL, Nevada.

  • jpfan

IMO You Had A Bad Day was a much better boot song than Home. Although I think Daniel Poweter would gladly trade his downloads for Daughtry’s album sales.

Kellie has done amazingly well and continues to sell albums. I even think she got the best album reviews of the Season 5 bunch. (I didn’t read them all .) By the way, how are Jordin and Blake doing compared to past winners? I haven’t a clue and figuring out their sales seems really complicated.

  • squishy

So “Home” wasn’t the biggest song on the planet but at least it is helping to carry the DAUGHTRY CD to be the biggest selling CD of 2007 and since its release to radio the album has sold >600K CDs which is more than the Daniel Powter CD ever sold.

I am sure that Daniel Powter would gladly switch places with Chris Daughtry any day…LOL!

  • Nevada

As of 03-06-07, “Bad Day” had sold 2,159,355 digital downloads. It was the first song to cross the 2 million mark in digital sales.

As for overall chart performance, there is this:

    Daniel Powterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ continues à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢-fueled charts run
    UPI News Service 04/27/06

For its fifth straight week, Daniel Powterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100 and Digital Songs charts.

And on October 12, 2006, Billboard reported:

BAD, BADDER, BADDEST: Daniel Powterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Warner Bros.) is having another good week. After 18 consecutive frames at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, Powter yielded the throne to Natasha Bedingfield. The British thrush reigned for five weeks with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Unwrittenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Epic), the longest-running AC chart-topper by a solo female since Kelly Clarkson ruled for 21 weeks in 2005 with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakaway.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ But this week it is Bedingfield who has slipped, as Powter reclaims the seat of power.

    That gives à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ a 19th week at No. 1, equaling the rule of the longest-running No. 1 by a solo male artist in AC history. Phil Collins spent 19 weeks on top in 1999 with a song from the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tarzanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ soundtrack, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll Be in My Heart.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

  • Kirsten

Although I think Daniel Poweter would gladly trade his downloads for Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album sales.

Don’t count on it. Daniel’s CD has been an international hit. Take Japan as an example, it sold 586K making it the highest selling album by a Westerner last year. The rest of the world buys CDs too.

What Nevada’s numbers show is that being the Idol boot song does not guarantee a massive hit. Many argued before the season that any person who had the boot song would have a similar monster hit. “Bad Day” owned the download charts and Hot 100 for weeks last year, but this year showed that there is more to being a massive hit than being played on AI. The more information we gather, the better predictions we can make. With a 24% downturn in sales this week despite increased airplay, we can see that Idol does help (this is the first sales week that Idol has been off the air), but AI isn’t a miracle worker.

  • squishy

Very true Kirsten. “AI isn’t a miracle worker.” Just as being the American Idol winner doesn’t mean an artist will have great sales just as being the Idol boot song doesn’t mean that a song will be “the biggest song on the planet”.

The last time I looked, the rest of the world was indeed “on the planet.”

    According to MTV (04-19-06):

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has been a smash for more than a year overseas, where heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already on his second or third single (depending on the market). And last week in his home country, he won Best New Artist at Canadaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version of the Grammys, the Junos.

    And:

With à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on wax, Powter was able to score a record deal, and through use of the song in a Coca-Cola commercial overseas, he quickly found an audience. In France, he broke a 20-year-old chart record.

  • Kirsten

Very true Kirsten. AI isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a miracle worker. Just as being the American Idol winner doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mean an artist will have great sales just as being the Idol boot song doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mean that a song will be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“the biggest song on the planetà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Certainly. Now that we have this information, we can attempt to make reasonable predictions for next year. You can’t just throw any old song against the wall and hope it sticks. “Bad Day” proved itself to be a hit before it was picked and it worked very well within the context of a boot song.

  • squishy

It is surprising just how badly Daniel Powter did in the United States compared to the rest of the world in terms of CD sales. I do not know how many CDs the Daniel Powter CD sold throughout the world but selling only 500K CDs in the United States after having a number 1 hit song for many weeks with 2 million downloads of a single is quite surprising.

People in the United States just wanted the song and not the CD. Lucky for Chris Daughtry, people are buying the whole CD as well.

  • vegasdee

    I love Nevada, thanks.

  • Kirsten

I do not know how many CDs the Daniel Powter CD sold throughout the world but selling only 500K CDs in the United States after having a number 1 hit song for many weeks with 2 million downloads of a single is quite surprising.

Not really. If you follow single/CD sales this occurs quite frequently (well, not the 2 million downloads, “Bad Day” is in a world of it’s own on that one).

Let’s not turn this thread into a dissection of Daniel Powter’s career. Daniel’s association with AI is through his song. The “Bad Day”/AI relationship was a good one for both of them. IMO “Bad Day” contributed to the success of Season 5. It entered the common lexicon and has become a short hand for “you lose” on everything from the Daily Show to sporting events. I’m sure Daniel is very happy.

  • squishy

I am sure that Daniel Powter is very happy. I am sure that Chris Daughtry is very happy as well. It worked out well for both of them didn’t it. I am sure that neither are complaining. One has the biggest hit of 2006 and the other has the biggest album of 2007.

  • Kirsten

I am sure that Daniel Powter is very happy. I am sure that Chris Daughtry is very happy as well.

I’m sure they are both tickled pink. I am happy for both of them. I’m sure that they are both reasonable enough to realize that you can’t possibly win at everything and having a successful career is enough. So, there is no reason for anyone to fret.

Numbers are numbers. I appreciate all the great information people bring here.

  • kjc

Concerning the Idol boot songs: “Home” just doesn’t have the catchy melody that “Bad Day” has. If it weren’t by an Idol alum they would never have chosen it as the boot song. Even my 7-yr-old son can sing the chorus to “Bad Day”. He doesn’t know the verses, but when that chorus comes on he cranks it up!

  • griz

Bad Day is a terrific pop tune! It’s one of the few new tunes I downloaded. I’m a sucker for a good pop hook and this song was brilliant!

  • SpenserJ

So Nevada, would that mean that at the time, Bad Day was the biggest song on the planet?

  • bean99

Bad Day was a catchy song that was very lucky that AI used it because it sold a ton. I liked it but was very tired of it after the show ended. Home was also a very good pick and I still like it. For me it doesn’t matter at all who sold better.

I don’t follow the charts much anymore but it’s fun to see Blake’s name on it. :smile1_tb:

  • squishy

Bad Day definitely was the biggest song on the planet during its hey day of 2006. It was so big that people got sick of it after awhile.

  • Ladybug

I am one who was surprised that “Home” didn’t become the “biggest song on the planet.” I truly expected it to, but it was the boot song of a meh year for American Idol, so there you go.

Looks like buyers prefer the “rocker” Daughtry and his CD to that particular song.

  • jpfan

IMO “Bad Day” was a better song that Home but I also think that nothing associated with Season 6 will end up being HUGE.

  • Valley

Concerning the Idol boot songs: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ just doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the catchy melody that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has. If it werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t by an Idol alum they would never have chosen it as the boot song

Posters at a Daughtry fansite have mentioned hearing “Home” used in the background in the French and Brazilian versions of Idol. I don’t think loyalty to an AI alum extends that far… IMO, Bad Day led to a much more whimsical sendoff than Home. It worked for me in the early weeks, but as time went on I felt the Idols being sent packing deserved something more meaningful.

  • squishy

Well since the DAUGHTRY CD is still selling well (#5 on the Billboard chart at week 28th selling 69K) with the song “Home” carrying it for the last 2 months so the song “Home” isn’t doing too badly for Daughtry :wink_wp:.

    That sounds about right…

This wouldn’t even be an issue except for some rash predictions of planet domination made back in March.

  • jpfan

Kellie’s album has been out since October and is still on the BB200 so I’d say she’s doing fine. Plus she has a gold record. (And congrats to Elliott for selling the most CDs ever for a 3rd place finisher. This would mean a lot more if the 4th place finisher wasn’t doing so well.)

  • squishy

Nothing wrong with rash predictions. Didn’t we all make them for various Idols initial CD sales? I do remember various people making rash predictions about Taylor’s inital CD sales any where from 200K to 600K his first week. I think there is nothing wrong with it. It is part of the game.

  • Lisa B

    I still love Bad Day.

  • radname

    One shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t knock Kellieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sales of 7k. At least she is selling 7K.

What does that have to do with this discussion? Please make your point and leave the other Idols out of it.

Let me say, and this will end the discussion for good: Two wrongs don’t make a right. Just like an ABC afterschool special, I think we’ve all learned a valuable lesson here about making wild predictions based on nothing.

  • Kirsten

    Thanks MJ.

    How about some nice numbers?

HDD is predicting that Paul McCartney will have the number 1 album this coming week based on first day sales (sales prediction for the week 180K).

Er…how does this relate to Idols…why of course, Beatle songs were sung on the finale.

  • squishy

    Thanks MJ.

You are right. Two wrongs don’t make a right. No more predictions on Idols’ CDs sales or how well a song will do. The music executives who are the supposed experts try to make those kinds of predictions and they are often wrong as well. I am just happy that Chris Daughtry is doing as well as he is doing.

I’ll be picking up a copy of that. I heard his new single on the radio and it’s pretty good! It’s not sappy like the stuff he used to do with Wings. I think my pick for the worst singles ever is “Uncle Albert” and “My Love”. Doesn’t compare with The Beatles stuff, but not bad!

2 9 BLAKE LEWIS THIS LOVE
10 13 BLAKE LEWIS WHEN THE STARS GO BLUE

Kirsten, the above says Jordin 39k and Blake 33k. Then what are these totals from?

The 39K and 33K are the total sales of EPs over two weeks.

The numbers I posted were adding the sales of the most popular single from the EP (Jordin=”This is My Now” and Blake=”You Give Love a Bad Name”) and the sales of the EP to get a number which we would have gotten if the EPs were really traditional singles (traditional singles would have been combined with the downloads to come up with chart positions on some of the BB charts).

    So:
Total Sales this week: 66,302 (downloads and EPs)
Total Sales (two weeks): 167,220 (total downloads and EPs since they have been released).

I still love Bad Day, too. :)

Well, probably not the anthem of Soul Patrol. But certainly the anthem of Daughtry H8ers. :laughing_tb: If Bad day >> Home, Daughtry = suck, is this what we are getting at? :unsure_tb:

  • Lu

I like Bad Day and Home but I think Elliott’s Movin On would be a much better boot song – more upbeat – not sappy or sad. :)

When CDs are put on sale, (Daughtry’s was at $7.88 and $7.99 at various locations for the past two weeks) who takes the loss? The store, the record company, the artist? Does anyone know?

Since CDs are normally $11.99 – $14.99 after the first week, someone is eating the big difference in profits for the sake of selling more units. Just curious as to how it affects the artist’s profits.

Well, probably not the anthem of Soul Patrol. But certainly the anthem of Daughtry H8ers.

I started liking “Bad Day” before AI ever chose to use it as a boot song. Does that mean I’m clairvoyant? Should I buy a lottery ticket?

Just because somebody prefers one song to another doesn’t mean that they hate the other artist. There isn’t always an ulterior motive behind everything. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

The world is not black and white. The population of the planet cannot be broken down into a camp of Daughtry lovers and Daughtry h8ters. Most people live in the ground between those camps….a no man’s land of “don’t give a damn”.

I congratulate Daughtry. He has a Gold selling single in “Home” and that is nothing to sneeze at. I can be happy for many people, all at the same time.

There is no loss. CDs are dirt cheap to produce en masse. Every party just gets a smaller piece of the pie at sale price….

    Thanks Kirsten!

It’s Not Over! :laugh_tb: Not yet..

It will go platinum before the summer is over…. :smoke_tb:

    “Bad Day” vs. “Home”

I personally thought that “Bad Day” was too catchy….and it was a perfect match the the spirit of the moment (a.k.a. the “boot”). “Home” is great, too, but it just wasn’t as good as “Bad Day.” Like someone mentioned earlier, Idol got really lucky with that song last year. So did that guy who sang it….whatshisface. What’s he doing these days?

Interestingly enough, I have “Home” on my iPod, but not “Bad Day.” :)

Oh yeah, and regarding Elliott’s sales:

I remember Ken Barnes saying that it would be a “long, hard slog” for Elliott to make it to a quarter million in sales.

Me thinks he might want to reconsider…

Cut the fan war crap. Stop calling people H*ters, or you’re banned.

Thanks Kirsten! Now I understand the numbers. :-)

I haven’t been on my computer for a few days and I wanted to catch up with Idol news, and after reading this thread first, I remember why I like chat and the new format with LisaB’s news in her own section.

Thanks mj for restructuring the blog!

I am so tired of these fanwars and the same stuff over and over!

    Happy Thursday everyone!!!!!!!!!

    At $7.99

    Artist: $0.52 or 7.5%
    Producer: $0.24 or 3%
    Songwriters: $0.27 or 3.4%
    Distributor: $1.75 or 22%
    Manufacturing $1.00 (roughly 12%)
    Retailer: $1.74 or 21%
    Record label: $2.47 or 31%

However, check most recording contracts and you will indeed find a provision which specifies that albums sold “below cost” (as determined by the label in its sole discretion) pay NO royalties to the artists. Fact.

I can see where someone might be left with the impression that Kellie’s sales aren’t good compared to Taylor Swift’s but then perhaps they aren’t taking into consideration that Taylor’s Cd has been selling for bargain basement prices at 7.99 a pop compared to the 12.00 to 14.00 Kellie’s album has been selling for. Taylor Swift also has quite alot of her music listed on music sites and her myspace, etc., in the same way all the other Idol’s have been privileged to do, while Kellie has only been allowed to have one, or in a couple cases two songs with which to sell her album on. Things like these are out of Kellie’s control and fall directly with those that are handling her career. If Kellie’s not happy with the work her people are doing I’m sure she will seek a contract elsewhere the next time one needs to be signed.

As for now I think Kellie is doing fantstic when it comes to her sales. I’m sure that if they offered Kellie and her album many of the perks that Taylor and all the other Idol’s are getting that she would probably see her sales jump five to ten times what currently are. But even as is she still has already outsold two former Idol winners who released their latest albums the same time she did. She has also outsold most of the Season 6 contestants already and from the looks of things will probably have the second highest sales out of the group. Now if someone wants to call that “not doing good” I wonder just what they would call “good”. Or do they expect Kellie to sell the most albums out of everyone with the least amount of promotional tools to do so. If thats the case then I’m afraid their dreaming.
