HDD – Album Sales Prediction : May 18-24

Memorial Day was yesterday, so we did not get any numbers from HDD. For their “weakend” report HDD had twenty | one | pilots, an indie-pop/alt-hip-hop band, topping the chart. They previously released two albums on their own before getting signed and this is their second album on the Fueled by Ramen label. This will be their first number one with their previous album selling just 261K. “Vessel”‘s highest rank on the BB200 was 58 and the most they sold of it in any given week was 11K. But what is interesting is that they sold consistently. BB stated “Notably, the sales of Vessel have been quite a consistent seller since its release in January of 2013, which indicates the act has been steadily accumulating fans. That is in contrast to how some albums earn the bulk of their sales in a short burst of time — like in the first few weeks or months of release — which could indicate limited fan reach.” Those fans are coming out in droves to buy their release out of the gate this time as they are predicted to sell 125K-135K in albums and 130-140K in SPS.

The Pitch Perfect 2 Soundtrack is going head to head with Taylor Swift to lock up the number 2 spot on the chart this week. While the soundtrack, which has a song that features the Sing-Off’s Pentatonix (playing Canadians) on it, will dominate Taylor in album sales, Taylor’s successful premiere of her new single “Bad Blood” (a twist on songs for Taylor – this time she isn’t singing about an ex-lover her done her wrong, but Katy Perry who stole some back-up dancers) resulted in 40K of TEAs/SEAs. Impressive. Josh Groban is hanging out in 3rd defying all industry rules of thumb. Zedd (electro-house) is debuting 5th, and Mumford and Sons (folk rock) is 6th. Also debuting in the top 10 are Brandon Flowers (releasing his second solo album away from the Killers) at 7th, Jamie Foxx (who recently sang with Rayvon on the Idol finale) at 8th and Faith No More (funk metal) at 9th. The Zac Brown Band rounds out the top 10, but Now 54 (featuring Kelly Clarkson, Tori Kelly and One Direction) is 11th.

It’s interesting to see who is not on the list of the top 15 albums…former Idol judge Mariah Carey. It is hard to stay relevant (although it is yet another “Greatest Hits” release from her, but she did perform at the Billboard Awards).

Who is not on the list but probably will be is Sawyer from The Voice. His compilation album will qualify him for the chart and if they link his single sales to it, he will do quite well on the combined.
