Meh on CBTM’s download numbers. While it’s pretty neat that it had sold over 20K prior to the official release, 40K after an AI performance does not scream Top40 hit to me. I have very little basis for this pessimism, so I hope I’m wrong. Anecdotal evidence tells me casual fans really like this song, just not sure if it’ll be a big radio hit versus a moderate one. Okay, nuff downer stuff from me– good thing I have 250% album sales numbers to look forward to!

ETA: Ooh Brian is getting on the ball. Sales post up already! Yay for Top 20 confirmation, and 25K!

  • hypertwink

No, we want Randy to take a journey. LOL

ETA: I like Adam but some of my friends don’t; they tune in anyway, because they want to see want Adam’s going to do. To them, there is still a freakshow quality to Adam that they can’t quite resist. One has even compared the phenomena to what happened with Sanjaya. Not that I agree with the comparison but novelty factor is probably similar, for some.

  • weareallinnocent

LOL at the comments. And cool for Cook and CBTM.

You know Matt’s not the only one who performed You Found Me, right? The Fray is promoting You Found Me right now too, among other things, I saw them perform it last week on one of the late night shows — Letterman or Leno, don’t remember which. Just sayin’… :-)

ETA: Thanks for the Mansfield link. And, LOL at the 39% bump for Magic Rainbow. Crush is still selling well too!

How does a song called “Boom Boom Pow” do so well?

Yay for DC!!! I’m so picky, I have to point out that Brian said his sales more than doubled from last week, but if my math is correct they more than tripled, right? :) 7,000—>25,000.

I never thought LO would sell 100K of downloads, much less 874K- or that it would make it to #20 on CHR and top ten on HAC. Congratulations to Cookie for its success- hoping CBTM will be a crossover hit.

  • SashaB

Awesome! I am so happy about the boost for DC’s album and overall sales bump.

Curious, does anyone know how Brooke’s album is doing?

  • luckeee55

i was sort of disappointed in CBTM’s sales numbers. Brooke White sold over 50K after her AI appearance. However, congratulations to Cook for the excellent album sales this week. There is no denying that an AI appearance is the best promotion around. Hope Cook can keep up the momentum when AI moves on to its’ new idol.

Also great sales figures for Archie when one considers his radio presence these days is almost nil. That little song Crush keeps chugging along. Archie sold 18K in singles downloads this week which is more than respectable.

Both Davids are being shown the love.

  • lovegoodmusic

    SashaB:

Curious, does anyone know how Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album is doing?

Brooke’s new album hasn’t been released yet.

luckeee55: Aww, don’t be disappointed in Cook’s single sales, because his album sales are great. And Brooke’s single sales were higher because she doesn’t have anything else to sell at this time. I am looking forward for the release date of her new album. And I can’t wait to buy it.

Several of Idols from season seven are very talented, and I feel that many of them will maintain and have great careers.

  • Trina

I’m with you. Thrilled about the album increase and I’ve already read a dozen times the reasoning that people probably loved CBTM and just chose to buy the album, but eh I’m not buying it. I chalk the album increase up to the Idol viewers who were probably part of the 56 million votes he got back in May remembering why they liked him.

  • EmmaJK

i was sort of disappointed in CBTMà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sales numbers. Brooke White sold over 50K after her AI appearance.

Ah, but Brooke’s was a new single, and the first we had heard from her since the finale, practically. There are already over a million people out there who have CBTM (via the album), and this is his 2nd (or 3rd) single. His AI appearance also resulted in a huge increase in album sales, so he benefited in two ways. I’m really most impressed that so many folks saw his performance and chose to purchase the entire album, rather than just the single.

No disapointment here. He got a nice bump, and will probably still see nice numbers next week. Hopefully, after that, airplay for CBTM will start increasing, which will keep sales at a nice level.

  • cheese

Did Jordin sell huge numbers of downloads when she performed “One Step at a Time” on Idol before it was released to radio? I don’t think CBTM or any song on David Cook a huge hit, but it will likely do a little better than LO on CHR and just as well on HAC – hopefully well enough to lead to a third single.

  • lovegoodmusic

    cheese:

Did Jordin sell huge numbers of downloads when she performed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“One Step at a Timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

That’s a good question, so hopefully someone will come along and post the sales facts for her single sales and album sales the week she appeared on Idol. I think it would be nice to compare the money that was brought in for Jordon and Cook’s Idol appearances. And I definitely would like to see the total dollar amount for the album and single sales.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Yay for Cook! He really needs to tour the West Coast.

  • mac

Well, strictly looking at the math, I am thrilled with DC’s sales (if people want to compare them to Brookes). After being on idol, DC sold approximately 18,000 more CDs from last week. At roughly $13.00 a CD, that is $234,000. Add to that 39,000 single downloads ($39,000), for a total of $273,000. I’m not even adding in boosts and sales that LO and TOML also got from the appearance. That’s over a quarter of a million dollars in sales just from a 5 minute appearance on idol.

Brooke on the other hand, made around $50,000 for her appearance. Big difference.
Seriously, in the end, it really is all about the dollars that are made.

  • lovegoodmusic

    mac:

Seriously, in the end, it really is all about the dollars that are made.

I definitely agree, but for one reason or another some people think single downloads are more financially lucrative than album sales. And that is far from the truth. Album sales attract and build momentum by selling out concerts and collecting more invested fans along the way, which is crucial to the artists long term success.

  • gingerly

Did Jordin sell huge numbers of downloads when she performed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“One Step at a Timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on Idol before it was released to radio?

I went back and found it…wasn’t easy. Interestingly it placed just behind Cook’s version of Innocent that week.

    76 Jordin Sparks à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“One Step at a Timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 19,793 (446%; lw 3,627) Total: 74,065 (OFF)

Not sure if it’s a perfectly fair comparison, because I read somewhere that finale performances don’t get the bump that guest performances during the season do, because there are so many other performances and distractions on that night…?

  • Trina

Oh I agree strong album sales are important especially in terms of the label making money, but a single has to grab people and for album sales to remain strong people need a reason to want to buy it. He can’t promote himself on AI every week so he’s going to have to rely on airplay. Even if CBTM does starts gaining airplay but people don’t like it that much it won’t mean much for album sales.

hopefully well enough to lead to a third single.

If he never gets another song released to pop radio I think RCA would still release something to HAC since he seems to be embraced there and it’s something.

  • Tony

You know Mattà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not the only one who performed You Found Me, right? Just sayinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ :-)

With 20 million people watching Idol, I think it’s safe to assume that Matt was a large part of that 70% increase.

  • mac

I just wanted to add one more thing about the Brooke vs. David comparison. After Brooke performed her single, 50,000 people wanted/got the single. Since there was no other way to get the single (no album), people downloaded the single. When David performed CBTM, people had options. They could buy just the single or get the single when they got the album. Either way, they got the single. So in the end, 64,000 copies of the single were given out to 64,000 people who wanted it (39,000 singles and 25,000 albums). 50,000 copies/people vs. 64,000 copies/people. Not sure why it matters where the single comes from? In the end, it seemed like more copies of the single were distributed to the public.

    LOL. What?

64,000 copies of CBTM were given out to 64,000 people (39,000 singles and 25,000 albums). 50,000 copies of Brooke’s single were given out to 50,000 people. 64,000 vs. 50,000.

    Is that better Tony? LOL.

  • Tony

You’re adding album sales with single sales. That makes absolutely no sense. Do you do that with EVERYONE that performs on Idol?

  • hardkandy

I don’t think there’s a comparison between Brooke and David and the sales effect of them performing on AI. Apples and oranges. Totally different circumstances.

  • Tony

Also, it’s SINGLE sales…meaning “by its self”.

  • weareallinnocent

With 20 million people watching Idol, I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s safe to assume that Matt was a large part of that 70% increase.

Personally, I feel it’s never “safe to assume” anything. :-) But, YMMV.

I don’t want to detract from Matt. As I’ve said several times in this neck of the woods, I enjoyed Matt’s performance of The Fray a heck of a lot more than the judges did. I’m simply pointing out that The Fray is currently out promoting their own song, and in fairness, probably deserve some credit for their own sales.

  • mac

Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re adding album sales with single sales. That makes absolutely no sense. Do you do that with EVERYONE that performs on Idol?

All I was saying was that with David, 64,000 people wanted the CBTM song. They got it either by purchasing the single or the album. 50,000 people wanted Brooke’s single. That was MY ONLY point.

  • Trina

Well at least the album increase was buzzworthy enough to get a mention on HDD’s “Hit List”
The Taylor dig was unnecessary IMO.

    Thanks.

LOL at the Cook/Brooke spin. Who know Brooke White would move more singles that Cook’s new single. It’s a shame Brooke didn’t have an album out to take advantage of her Idol appearance. Who knows how many albums she might have sold? Maybe 25K or more.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

The only reason I brought up my point was because Brooke comparisons were being brought up at the beginning of this thread that didn’t seem valid to me. Whatever. I love Brooke and I bought her song. Love Cook also.

  • sma11ie

Who know Brooke White would move more singles that Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new single. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a shame Brooke didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have an album out to take advantage of her Idol appearance. Who knows how many albums she might have sold? Maybe 25K or more.

I’d say more, actually. I’m a big Brooke fan, and I think she’s still very much in AI fans’ conscious– if she had been able to get out her album in time for her AI appearance, I think for sure she could’ve sold more than that for her first week. That said, I still don’t think it makes much sense to compare that to DC. Because could you really say, oh, since Brooke sold 25K or 50K of her album after her AI performance, she’s more popular than DC? That’s silly because DC sold 280K his first week. But that comparison is ridiculous too because DC is on a major label, and got the crazy publicity of an AI winner. We could compare and qualify each statement until our hair falls out, and there’d be no clear “winner”. Haha. But it’s fun.

  • May

LOL at the Cook/Brooke spin. Who know Brooke White would move more singles that Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new single.

It’s a “spin” that deliberately ignores one important fact. Cook’s is a third single off an album that has been out for 4 months and already sold a million copies and Brooke’s is a debut single in its debut week with no album out (which in reality should have done much much better than CBTM). Comparing the two is as farfetched as comparing CBTM’s or ALTNOY’s debut sales to those of LO and Crush respectively and concluding that the latter are better singles because they sold more on their first week. This topic is one of those fanwar-baiting topics and I wish we could move onto something else.

  • luckeee55

I never expected my post to get so many varied replies. I am very happy that Cook’s appearance boosted his album sales so much. He probably needs those album sales. It is apparent that RCA has spent a bundle promoting Cook and RCA wants its recoupment (I bow to the experts here as that may not be the correct term). Brooke, on the other hand, may have lined her pockets a bit more with her sales.

  • hardkandy

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“spinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that deliberately ignores one important fact. It also ignores the fact that David Cook is the American Idol WINNER and is with a major label. Is it really a wonder why people may expect more from him?
As I said before, the comparison makes no sense because they are in totally different situations.

  • stelladallas

“Mad World” by Gary Jules is currently #5 on the itunes rock chart and #48 overall. I bet Adam’s will go higher than that.

    Thanks.

I don’t. I just found combining the two a little disingenuous in this case. I mean, we don’t say Cook’s “Time of My Life” sold 2 million copies just because the single version and the album sold 1 million each.

  • Trina

He probably needs those album sales. It is apparent that RCA has spent a bundle promoting Cook and RCA wants its recoupment

I think as the winner he earned all of that promotion.

The press release RCA sent out to announce platinum mentioned this

Collectively the songs from David Cook have sold over 2 million tracks and ringtones combined.

Of course we’ll never know what RCA needs to recoup or if they have already but IMO he’s doing fine.

I don’t get the comparisons with Brooke at all either though.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

This topic is one of those fanwar-baiting topics and I wish we could move onto something else.

One persons opinion, is another person’s fanwar bait.

    I wish two things:

    1. That folks could be less sarcastic and condescending towards their fellow posters
    2. That fans could handle negative criticism of their Idol with out a freak-out and a pile on.

I feel like I’ve been breaking up a lot of fights lately, and I see fault on BOTH sides.

Oh and lest I forget #3

I’ll decide what’s baiting and what isn’t. Don’t try to dictate the discussion here. If reading negative criticism of your favorite upsets you, stop reading.

  • hypertwink

OMG, who would have thought Brookie vs Cookie? LOL Just when you thought that the David vs David Deathmatches have been decided, a new contender has risen from the ranks od the Season 7 ranks. Is it the Inked Irish Screamer, the Not-So-Awesome Aussie, or the Zombie Queen Sy? Guess again. It’s the Hippie Dippy Nanny challenging the Emo Everyman.

  • hcpoirot

Album sales still more important than single sales. Though single sales help you in radio hit charts more.

Example: In all tribute, people will always said how many million albums an artist sold with how many top ten hits and not how many million singles you sold.

Single sales also do not translate into how many album sales. Most current example: Florida. He sold over 2 million single download with his latest single. But his new album only sold over 50 K in the first week.

Maybe people only wanted to hear that one song and don’t bother to buy the whole album.

The same can be said to Jordin album. She had very good singles sales but the album sales was barely passed one million after a long time.

Carrie second album singles did not sold millions in each singles that released but people still buying her albums and maybe Carnival Ride will reach 3 million.

That was a good result considering her solo album sold near 7 million.

So David Cook doing alright. But lets face it, for the past three season winners, the result of their album sales perhaps not as good as the company recording wanted.

But over one million sales still count a good result in over five months.
