Whoa. It’s time for my weekly “Damn, Kelly!” LOL.

  • abbysee

Kelly is idol’s only international star. It’s funny because the others try so hard, Carrie, ie, and Kelly doesn’t have to. No tabloid romances, no fancy smancy covers, no feuds with other singers. She just makes music. Need I say, go Kelly?

  • hyperren

@abbysee Well, there’s also Daughtry. And speaking for my country (Philippines), the Davids have hit it big, and so has Elliott Yamin. And Jordin’s doing pretty okay, thanks to “No Air.”

In all fairness to Carrie and others, pop/top40 music is much easier to sell internationally than a lot of the other genres. I’m guessing that is partially why Kelly does so much better internationally than others. Rock is hit or miss depending on the country and most people outside of the U.S. avoid country music like the plague. I think Jordin is increasing in international popularity but then she is also pop.

  • stelladallas

I just noticed that “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts and co-written by Chris Sligh, is #1 on the itunes country chart and #7 overall. When did it become available for download? (I just got it today) I will be interested in seeing the digital download numbers for it next week. It is a damned good song.

  • hypertwink

No tabloid romances, no fancy smancy covers, no feuds with other singers.

To be fair, I think the entire universe knows about the whole “I-Hate-You-David-Hodges” hullabaloo; if they don’t, then they do know about the whole fuck-up with Clive which IMO fuels part of the hype about All I Ever Wanted…which is not the best I ever wanted from Kelly. In some way, I’m a little saddened that she’s publicly eating crow now, after everything she said circa My December.

Interesting to see the really HUGE sellers– Plain White T’s, Katy Perry– are hitting numbers that no Idol has even come close to– even Before He Cheats, Since U Been Gone, and No Air.

screw technicalities …i agree with abbysee!! It’s my right!! :thumbup_tb:

HDD predicts #1 and 200-225K for Kelly’s opening week sales. I’m surprised, but I also think they’re underestimating. She’s got Idol tonight, and SNL Saturday. Besides which, I expect her album to have legs and sell steadily for a long time.

  • latingrl2005

    I’m happy for Kelly.

The cd leaked weeks ago and we know most will not buy it.

    Me too. :-(

Those HDD #s surprise me, that they’re pretty low compared to what I expect given the promo. But that’s their one day sales estimate, right?

  • latingrl2005

    These are Kelly’s pass numbers.

    Kelly’s SoundScan Debuts:

    My December Kelly Clarkson 291,213 #2 7/14/07
    Breakaway Kelly Clarkson 250,432 #3 12/18/04
    Thankful Kelly Clarkson 297,400 #1 05/03/03

  • sma11ie

The cd leaked weeks ago and we know most will not buy it.

I don’t agree with that. Very often, the most illegally downloaded albums are also the highest selling ones, and leaks often end up being a form of promotion. Kelly’s first single was available (legally) for free before it went on iTunes, which helped build buzz, and the paid (higher quality version) is still selling like hotcakes (see above).

And yes, those are one day estimates, so they can be off by a lot. I think they’re underestimating all her upcoming promo this week.

  • cheese

Even HDD concedes that they are probably underestimating Kelly’s sales based on her upcoming promo. They’ll probably update their estimate by Friday. I bet she’ll come closer to 300K, if she doesn’t pass it.

  • Michelle

    Go Kelly!

  • twinklestar

Those numbers for Kelly are VERY disappointing. I thought 350-400K no problem. Guess not.

Well, give the Davids some time. They could surprise internationally. Both are already big in the Philippines. David A. is doing pretty well in Japan (Elliot does very well there), and David A. does very well in other Asian countries like Malaysia and Singapore. And his album will be released in the UK soon, along with his tour there. No guarantees, but at least Jive is trying.

Carrie is country–she is never going to be huge overseas in that genre. Daughtry doesn’t do the type of rock that generally translates in the UK, although I think he’s done ok there. And Jordin is doing well in the UK after No Air. She’s does well in Australia, too.

Kelly is by far the biggest international success to come from Idol, but who knows what others can do in the future.

  • Mateja

    I’m from Slovenia (Europe).

Kelly Clarkson is very popular here. Songs from her Breakaway album were huge hits. Our radio stations are quite slow, they usually start playing big hits from USA at least two months after their USA release. But My Life Would Suck Without You appeared on the charts very quickly.

Daughtry and Jordin Sparks are also on our charts. And Jennifer Hudson, but she is known as the singer who won an oscar.

I heard Carrie’s “Before he cheats” on the national radio not so long ago. But country is not very popular here. The Davids didn’t reach us yet.

  • Hazehel

Well, give the Davids some time. They could surprise internationally. Both are already big in the Philippines.

It wouldn’t do either of them much good. Piracy is rife in the Far East, I remember some Filipinos were saying how excited they were that David Cook’s CD was released early in the Philippines, well, what they bought were probably the pirated copies of the album that was leaked onto the Internet about a week before its official release in the US.

Right, ’cause Kelly would be in the position she’s in if she hadn’t gotten to go first….

It does make some difference. Piracy may be rife in the Far East but artists still make money over there, especially if they’re popular enough to tour there.

David A. shows up on Billboard Box Score for the week of March 14, 2009, for the first time with his Sayreville, NJ show at the Starland Ballroom.

    155
    David Archuleta, Lesley Roy
    Starland Ballroom
    Sayreville, N.J.
    Feb. 26, 2009
    Gross Sales: $28,775
    Capacity/Sold: 1,151/1,151
    # of Shows/Sold Out: 1/1
    Ticket Price: $25
    Promoter: AEG Live

Concerts can be reported on the current chart at any time within 7 weeks of the show, so an earlier show could pop up later. Since the #290 show only reported $330 gross sales, I’m thinking this is the only show that has been reported for David A. thus far (lol). Either the venue or the promoter can report to Billboard. I’m thinking, in this case, it might be the venues reporting since no other show has been reported. The shows at the top of the chart are, of course, arena concerts.
