Daughtry sees an impressive 42% increase moving it within 23K of hitting platinum. Also, in platinum news, we should see Kris’s LLWD go platinum today since it had sold a total of 999K last week.

I want the #s for singles – just to see Kris and LLWD officially platinum

  • lucy

Well, great start for Danny. Nice strong basis for him to build on — wonder if his beating the projection was mainly an unforeseen Idol bump (and, if so, it was a very hefty one) or just some kind of erroneous projection.

I’m amazed that Adam is still selling in the five figures (though just barely). I guess he did have the Leno appearance last week, though, to account for it.

And I would really really really like to see Kris finally break the 300,000 mark. At this pace, he’s still got about a month to go to get there. I guess he probably does need a second single…. but I am still loath to see that happen before LLWD gets its chance to go as high on the radioplay charts as it possibly can. Would hate to see it lose out to a second single before it’s fulfilled its entire radio potential. I’m really torn on this one. Maybe the label is, too.

  • girlygirl

Actually, Danny’s total is slightly lower than the final HDD prediction of 67K, although it is well above the original estimate of 45-50K.

So congratulations to Danny. Very nice debut numbers! Good to see Adam’s sales increased this week. Too bad Kris’s dropped, but at least it was a small drop. He’s been consistent at selling 5-7K per week, anyway!

Why the big bump for Daughtry? Did he have some national promotion I’m blanking on?

  • Eileen99

Congratulations to Danny & his fans for a very nice debut.

I downloaded the Daughtry CD last week when it was on sale at Amazon – I’m sure he sold a lot of downloads that day. I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but I like it so far, and it was definitely worth the price of a latte! Today, the Script is on sale at Amazon for $2.99.

  • girlygirl

Hope the singles sales numbers come out soon. At keast we don’t have to wonder whether LLWD has gone platinum though, which is nice. Barring some weird disaster, that song will break into the Top 10 on the net official mediabase chart, as it is just 72 spins behind the current #10 song (which is rapidly losing spins). So there’s another milestone to look forward to.

  • koshka

Eileen99 – thanks for the script tidbit. I’ll have to check it out.

ETA: Thanks again. downloaded my $2.99 album :) And in return I’d suggest checking out The xx. Its listed as 7.99. I little more expensive, but fabulous chill music.

  • Bethlyn

Awesome news for Danny! His album is great.

  • girlygirl

Have we fast forwarded into the future? I just noticed the date on this thread! LOL

  • saga

I just saw these numbers for DCTR’s sales in march/april… seems like a ~15-20K idol bump, just like Danny.

    03/29/2009 – 7,300
    04/05/2009 – 24,769 (post AI appearance)

  • OhMyRawrrr

I was one who bought Daughtry’s mp3 last week thanks to a tip from a poster here. And I’m off to buy The Scripts’. Thank you Eileen99!! :D I love their current single.

  • itsalleternal

Good start for Danny. I wonder if his AI appearance helped out?

That beat Allison and came close to what Kris sold, correct?

  • J9BT

Singles numbers are in! LLWD is platinum!!! From USA Today:

Kris Allen, Live Like We’re Dying (57,000, -10 percent, 1.057 million total)

Kris Allen, Let It Be (Live) (40,000, -14 percent, 86,000)

Carrie Underwood, Cowboy Casanova (18,000, -17 percent, 1.214 million)

General Larry Platt, Pants on the Ground (15,000, -50 percent, 163,000)

Yayaya! Hands flailing in the air (to quote the man himself).

  • Paulie

What a weird coincidence with KATA and LLWD both dropping (approximately) 10%. LOL. Sorry… I just found it funny.

Anyhoo, congrats to Kris for “officially” hitting platinum for LLWD! I’m pleasantly surprised how it still has legs, almost 6 months since it debuted.

ETA: Nice to see LIB still had quite a number of sales. Yay for Haiti! :)

  • J9BT

Yayaya! Hands flailing in the air (to quote the man himself).

LOL! That was me, but I was typing and posting so I had to get a grip on myself and stop flailing for a minute!

Another LOL – Out of the 7 tracks showing huge spikes in sales based on IDOL performances, 3 came from booted contestants! What’s up with that?

Yet another LOL – General Platt’s POTG is still in the Top 10 selling IDOL digital downloads! I’ll predict that once he performs this on the finale (no doubt he will), he’ll go platinum!

  • J9BT

Good start for Danny. I wonder if his AI appearance helped out?

That beat Allison and came close to what Kris sold, correct?

IDK what Allison sold in her first week out, but Kris sold over 80,000. Danny’s album sales for Week 1 are very good. Congrats to Danny!

  • Mary102

I guess he probably does need a second single…. but I am still loath to see that happen before LLWD gets its chance to go as high on the radioplay charts as it possibly can. Would hate to see it lose out to a second single before it’s fulfilled its entire radio potential. I’m really torn on this one. Maybe the label is, too.

    First, Congrats to Kris! :D

And second, I’m in the camp of wanting to make sure LLWD really has peaked before putting another single out there. LLWD is clearly doing well, and still doing well, and putting another single out will hurt it, and is a bit of a gamble (as is any new single). So I’d prefer to ride the strong single sales and radio play train, rather than rush to put another single out, which can just as easily wait at least a little longer, imo.

Also, so – Daughtry’s big bump was from a sale on Amazon? I was wondering where it could have come from. That’s like, AI appearance big in terms of the bump he got :-)

Glad to see Adam’s sales have really been holding very steady, especially now that he’s overseas for an extended period, and so won’t be promoting much in the states for awhile. And he’s now selling overseas, which is another great bonus :-) I think FYE is doing well in Japan now too, and he hasn’t even gone there yet! He should do really well in Asia!

And WWFM selling strong still, so that’s another positive! Hopefully it will follow LLWD’s platinum status eventually!

  • sr4mjc

    Congratulations Kris!

Too bad I already own The Script, 2.99, what a bargain.

  • Mary102

Anyhoo, congrats to Kris for “officially” hitting platinum for LLWD! I’m pleasantly surprised how it still has legs, almost 6 months since it debuted.

I think this is more common than we sometimes realize. I know when LLWD was first released, and starting kind of slowly, there were quite a number of examples that were thrown out about big songs that took a number of months or more even to really become big hits. Unless you’re already established on the radio (like Gaga) then it’s usually a slower build.

So patience is definitely the name of the game ;-)

  • dana

Woooohooooo!!!!!! Congratulations to Kris! Platinum! Wow! Wohoo!!! CONGRATS! :)

  • lorismile

So close to 600K for WWFM!! Next week! Happy Adam’s CD sales to stay above 10K.

Congrats to Kris – first platinum for S8!

  • jms

Also, so – Daughtry’s big bump was from a sale on Amazon? I was wondering where it could have come from. That’s like, AI appearance big in terms of the bump he got :-)

I think Idol Rewind had a one hour Daughtry special.

The number one POP station in Chicago 103.5, starting spinning LLWD….YAY!!! Finally !!! This is a huge market and should really help LLWD secure a place in top 10!!! :)
Huge Congrats on going Platinum !!!….

  • sr4mjc

LLWD is #1 on Tampa’s Top 40 playlist right now too, big spins.

I’ve been working on the HAC Tampa dj for spins for WWFM. A little flirting never hurt anyone. Adam would be proud ;)

  • babybelle32

Congratulations to Kris. I wish that American Idol would have plugged Let It Be on the air last week, so that it would have bumped up the sales for “Let It Be”, but considering that the song was performed the previous week, and hasn’t received any promotion since, that’s still a good number. I wonder what was the point of releasing the single for a month, and before Idol Gives Back, if 19/AI had no intention of promoting it.

  • dana

And congratulations to Danny. Am not a fan but, hey, #4 at BB200? impressive. ;)

  • koshka

    Coldplay, The Scientist (29,000, +844 percent, 878,000)
Hinder, Lips of an Angel (21,000, +350 percent, 2.665 million)
Miley Cyrus, The Climb (18,000, +30 percent, 2.762 million)
Matt Nathanson, Come On Get Higher (17,000, +293 percent, 1.241 million)
John Legend, Everybody Knows (13,000, +2,938 percent, 87,000)
Creed, With Arms Wide Open (9,000, +204 percent, 572,000)
    John Mayer, Gravity (8,000, +172 percent, 594,000)

    Idol related singles.

Its interesting to see single sales totals without expectations attached to them.

  • Masieta

THRILLED for Kris. Lots of good news this week for Kris fans with the tour announcements and now LLWD going PLATINUM. Kris should be riding high tonight at his concert in Bakersfield. Hope someone takes some good video. So proud!!

  • washyourhands

CONGRATULATIONS Kris Allen. You are the man!

  • dana

“I wonder what was the point of releasing the single for a month…”

I almost forgot about this. What does that mean? (With the voice of Siobhan Magnus in my head saying that.) Would they really stop selling Kris’ LIB version on April 1st?

  • girlygirl

Here is my official flailing YAYAYAYAYAY! for LLWD going platinum

It looks like LLWD will eventually pass both Kelly and Carrie’s singles (Cowboy Casanova and Already Gone) for sales!

  • sunny2

Congrats Kris!!! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  • limi

Does anyone know where to find the number on Adam’s international sales? It would be interesting to see those numbers once his month of international promotion is over and after his second visit to the UK is finished.

  • JLM12

It would be really helpful if you would date the single releases so we can keep the info in context. Congrats to all!!!

  • Kate8

Wow Congratulations to Kris for his platinum single and to Danny for his fantastic first week sales. Glad to see that Adam’s WWFM single is selling well too.

  • mimi

GO KRIS ALLEN! I hope this is the first of many platinum singles!

  • sunny2

“I wonder what was the point of releasing the single for a month…”

My thoughts exactly. If it’s to raise money for charity, just keep it out there. They also only released it in the US. Again, many other countries watch AI and would of loved to download Kris’ Let It Be, myself included.

  • Eileen99

    BEST. FLOP. EVER.

Congratulations Kris on the Platinum milestone…. and the song is showing no signs of slowing down on the charts! Keep it going!

  • Mtlfan

wooooohoooooo…. HUGE congrats to Kris for LLWD going platinium!!!

    YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!! :D

I agre with girlygirl.. in the next 2 months it might be a bigger seller than ‘Already gone’ and ‘Cowboy Casanova’

congrats to Danny too! well deserved!
congrats to Adam too for the sustained good sales

  • lorismile

Now that we have Danny’s numbers it is official that Adam sold more in his first week than Kris, Allison and Danny’s sales combined!

Why the need to go there? I’m a huge Adam fan and this even drives me nuts so I can imagine how the fans of other idols feel. By this reasoning, if 10 years from now everyone goes Adam who? while Kris, Allison and Danny sell millions of records it wont matter because Adam sold more in the first week, right?

That’s nice. As is Kris’ one single selling more than the combined totals of the three singles that Adam has released.

So, in 10 years if Adam sells millions more singles than Kris, then I guess it’s okay because his first single sold more than the first 3 of Adam’s, right?

Sorry my snark needed to come out :-)

  • bridgette12

There is little incentive for 19/Jive to promote LIB, since they don’t make any money from it. A charity single gets some nice PR, but at the end of the day it’s about dollars and cents. Why run the risk of diluting focus on LLWD by promoting LIB?

  • tierbee

Yay! Congrats Kris on a platinum single! It is something that can be celebrated just all by itself – doesn’t mean he will or won’t have a multiplatinum career, it’s a cool achievement regardless. And really has not a thing to do with Adam or Danny or anyone else.

  • anovich

I’m just happy that Kris and Adam got platinum and gold single/album… Hey I’m not a fan of Danny but I’m still happy for him….

Agreed. I’m not much of an Adam or Danny fan but I’m happy for them and their fans that they are doing so well. Now if only Allison was doing anywhere near any of the 3 guys.

  • dhunken

Year for Kris 1 million! No one can ever take that away. A platinum selling artist. Love the sound of that. Yippee! Good job Danny of a very strong first week of Album sales and #4 of BB200. Glad Daughtry got a huge bump what ever the reason? (I’m not choosy) :-) Adam continues to hold steady and strong. I truly believe his album will go platinum and so will WWFM. Now if only you people would start buying Allison Album. I can only purchase so much ;-) What is wrong with the buying public. Her album is great and Scars is amazing. IMHO

  • Truthiness

It was expected that Kris would have an offical platinum single this week, given that last week was just 1K from that, and he was doing pretty well on iTunes. But still it’s nice to see that it’s offical. So good job for Kris. I’m happy for him.

And good job to the rest of the Idols for their increase in album sales. I was surprised that Adam got an increase, he was projected to have a loss, but hey, I’m definitely not complaining that wasn’t the case. Always nice to see.

To say once again, solid opening number by Danny. We’ll see where it goes from there, but best of luck to him.

  • washpd

First of all, congrats to Kris for his first platinum single! After all the mud that was thrown at Kris, Jive, the song, etc., in the weeks after this song was released, this must be really sweet for all involved. This song has really found a home on the radio–with being thisclose to top 10 on pop, top 5 on HAC, and top 20 on AC. And music fans have embraced it by continuing to buy it week after week after week.

Also, when The Script was interviewed on the VH1 countdown this past weekend, they were asked about LLWD, and they said they were so proud of it, and that it’s always your hope when you write a song that you end up not using, that another artist will take it and really do it justice, and that he really had. And, of course, they also mentioned that the connection helped raise their profile here in the States as well. This puts all the silly “cover-gate” talk into perspective.

  • zuper

At any rate. I am happy to see the Season 8 alum doing so well. I just wish Alisson would have taken off more than she did though – she is mega talented. But I think her best days are still ahead of her (maybe a few years from now). It’s difficult to imagine any of this year’s Idols producing anything that will land on the charts, but I’m sure it will happen. Meanwhile, I will patiently wait to be pleasantly surprised by them.

  • Truthiness

Yeah, but iTunes don’t account for many sales in the US, so I don’t see that it would be that different overseas. So not sure how useful iTunes rankings are in determining this number.

  • Michelle

CONGRATS TO KRIS!!! May it be the first in a long steady career :)

MTE. Ryan’s lips were sealed. They should have asked Danny to pimp it last week since he was so chatty.

  • pug

Although I am mostly an Adam fan I’m also emotionally invested in the top 4 of S8 as that was the first season I watched most of it!

I think it is fantastic for Kris and S8 that LLWD has gone platinum. It’s almost like validation against those who scorn S8 sales as being inferior. I also think LLWD is a slam-dunk for no.10 on Mediabase top 40 as Kesha has lost steam and the juggernaut that is Rihanna won’t get there in time!

I’m really happy for Danny that his album sold well. Not really into country but it’s not bad for a country album! I have all the top 4 albums and like others believe that Alison’s album deserves better. Saw Scars though on AI and sorry not a fan of that one. I actually agree with Adam and Kris that her next single should have been D is for Dangerous.

  • anovich

TFM and FYE were bombs. Yeah, I know, TFM was never released to radio, FYE is on the dance charts, they gave up after the AMAs, blah blah blah. Fact is they both bombed here in the US. I also don’t expect them to be the only bombs during his career, but I still expect him to have a very successful and long career.

Many successful artists have their missteps along the way. For Adam, it was unfortunate that it was at the beginning of his career.

  • JR Labrador

Congratulations Kris! Not my favorite song on the album by a long shot but it’s done very well for him and more importantly it’s keeping him in the game.

Not a Danny fan but congrats to him as well. The country audience is seeming to embrace him and that can only lead to good things for him.

And a woo-hoo for Adam! Sydney’s Mardi Gras is a very big deal. Glad to see he was having a lot of fun down there. Very gratified that his sales are holding steady. He should be joining Kris in the platinum club in about 6 weeks.

  • Pam

That’s awesome about LLWD going platinum. Big congrats to Kris!

Here is the official first week Soundscan figure for Danny’s album from Pulse:

    4) Danny Gokey – My Best Days – 65,231

It doesn’t cost any money to mention on the show that the song is available. I don’t think too many people are going to decide to buy LIB instead of LLWD, in fact, they might decide to buy a few singles/albums from AI alums while they are at itunes.

  • limi

Thanks to everyone for the information about the international sales. These Kris, Adam, Danny, sales comments are freaking me out!!! LOL. There is plenty of room in the music industry for success for them all. They are totally different artists with different fan bases. Hopefully they will all do well and continue to succeed. The only big difference is Adam is being promoted by RCA as an international artist. He also gets a lot of magazine spots because he is just so photogenic and he is great for sales. (Check out the new photos from Flaunt magazine, the camera does love him!) They are all talented in their own way so enjoy the music. I do have to say though, I’m loving all the acoustic stuff Adam is doing on his promotion tour, he does know how to change it up! P.S. I love Allison too, wish she was selling better, I think I’ll buy her album!! Have a great day to all!!

t looks like LLWD will eventually pass both Kelly and Carrie’s singles (Cowboy Casanova and Already Gone) for sales!

I’m quite certain LLWD will sell over 1.5 million. Now the question is more whether it will do as well as Archie’s Crush. Doesn’t look like it at the moment, but who knows, if the next single is another hit like LLWD, it could also help lift sales of LLWD. Just have to wait and see.

  • kokko

Dhunken – if you go to Danny’s twitter there is a link to a nice announcement saying “The soaring success of MBD includes a sizzling digital album tally in excess of 19,000 downloads, according to Nielsen Soundscan, earning Danny #1 berth in chart history with the best first week digital sales EVER by a debut country act”.

When LLWD debuted on Z100, I read the comments on their website, and I’d say they were 90% positive. So even though the song took a long time to climb the charts, I felt that with such a strong initial response, it should do well. The news today is very gratifying, and I think Kris really earned it. He has hardly ever stopped promoting and performing the song in all these weeks. Good job, Kris, I feel pretty proud of you right now.

  • tls62

Just popped in to an unusual thread for me to be in to say congrats to Kris…going back to my happy place in the video threads now.

Wow, those are very impressive numbers. Are they overall numbers or just iTune downloads?

  • lucy

Year for Kris 1 million! No one can ever take that away. A platinum selling artist. Love the sound of that. Yippee!

I guess so. Something tells me that the music world — both the industry and fans — are a lot more what-have-you-done-for-me-lately folks!

Look at Elliott: He has a platinum single that was one of the top songs of the whole year on two radio formats and a gold album as one of the *very* few indie albums that ever reach this milestone. And yet his second album — which is crammed with songs quite like that big hit — has sold hardly anything and he hasn’t been able to push even one of these apparently quite radio-friendly songs to radio and these days he’s mainly known as “that American Idol guy who whined about not having his insulin supplies when he was in that earthquake.” Life is tough in the music biz.

That said, congrats to Kris on having the little song that could, and I lift my glass to the hope he’ll have another one of those soon!

And yeah, it seems like Adam could sell extremely well internationally, which would be nice.

Yeah, but iTunes don’t account for many sales in the US, so I don’t see that it would be that different overseas. So not sure how useful iTunes rankings are in determining this number.

In the US, iTunes doesn’t account for many album sales unless you are in the top 2 or 3 for a long period.
Some of the numbers above are for WWFM. ITunes is useful as far as how well singles are selling.

DO you know the digital sales for this week we usually get them just wanted to get an Idea on what being # and #2 all week did for Danny digitally.

Unless there are a bunch of country fans that are suddenly using their computer to download, I’d say it is all those AI fan snapping up the albums. Hopefully Danny will grow on the country audience, I’d like to see all the AI alumni do well.

Thanks for the info. Wow that is great news in addition to the sales. The best selling digital sales ever by a debut country artist. Where ever the sales came from (again not choosy) that is a great distinction to have on your resume.

I’m quite certain LLWD will sell over 1.5 million. Now the question is more whether it will do as well as Archie’s Crush.

Well to be fair I don’t think it needs to. He has a solid hit that’s climbing the charts, and that’s all that really matters at the moment. Now he has to work on getting the follow up as high as it can go.

    Congrats Kris and Danny!

Exactly my point. iTunes is useful for singles, not album sales in the US, and I don’t think that it’s different elsewhere in the world, unless someone else has some concrete data to suggest otherwise. That being said…

And yeah, it seems like Adam could sell extremely well internationally, which would be nice.

I think he could as well. And yeah, it would be nice. I just wish that international data that was actually useful was as easy to get as the not-really useful, but easily accessible iTunes data.

I could try and do a google search for different countries, but well, I just don’t care that much to work that hard.

  • koshka

dhunken… the numbers are really interesting to me, aside from the artist. These account for almost 1/3 of Danny’s total sales. I mostly just look at Adam’s sales and I don’t think he’s ever come close to 1/3 in digital sales. I wonder how much this has to do with impulse buying with Danny singing on AI & the album dropping? Maybe TPTB have been getting this a little wrong perhaps the popular non-winner shouldn’t be pushing out albums for their for x-mas, instead waiting and producing a really solid album. This might have been a much better strategy for Allison.

I agree. I guess there are itunes for the single sales. And we’ll hear if an album goes gold/planitum in a country. Following airplay in other countries is really hard though… was trying to find some aussie info the other day but it didn’t go that well…

I think it was too much for the radio with 3 idols releasing singles at the same time, so yes, I think they should have waited with Alison.

  • jobbix

It’s a good week for the idols. Good debut for Danny. 65K is nothing to sneeze at, but the talk about gold is way too premature.

Adam’s album kept the momentum going. For the first time since it came out, I feel it has a legit shot at platinum. Then again, it may still be premature to say that.

LLWD is big. It’s a shame that it hasn’t helped bring more album sales, but it’s not unusual. Just ask Jordin and Kelly.

  • lorismile

Ke$ha sold a boat load of digital copies her first week, in part, because they lowered her price to like $8. I think that really helped Danny too. I wonder if you will see more albums done that way in the future.

Too bad that all the Idol singles went down % wise, expect Danny. Temporary Home doesn’t seem like it is catching on at all, or am I reading something wrong? I think it’s been out for a bit.

I feel it has a legit shot at platinum. Then again, it may still be premature to say that.

There was an article with Digital Sky I think where they said 1m of Adam’s CDs have been shipped so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

What is interesting is Adam never had a strong digital to sales ratio Comparted to the other Artist. He has always been a strong physical cd sales artist. IIRC even his first week sales his percentage of Digital to Total sales was lower then Kris or Allison or most of the artist selling during that period of time. I think he had 38K digital downloads his first week with 199K (rounding up) total which is about 19% after that his digital percentage went way way down. It is now about 12% of his total sales. Where as Kris Digital is about 1/3 of his total sales. This is not a good or bad thing just an observation everyone. So Koshka Adam’s digital sales is an interesting discussion.

jobbix – which kelly album are you referring to? The only album I don’t own is My December, but I never track her sales numbers. I thought all of them were pretty respectable.

I’m hardly a Kelly super fan by any stretch of the imagination…but that is nothing to sneeze at. I can look at the sales charts for the last year and see a lot of artist that would be happy to exchange sales figures. *shrug* no biggie.

  • jobbix

jobbix – which kelly album are you referring to?

AIEW, of course. By Kelly’s standards, it hasn’t live up to the expectations. Two big singles, MLWSWY and AG, yet the album sales have been sluggish for the most part and platinum is still far from sight. YMMV….

  • jpfan

It’s good to see Kris maintaining at 6K and Adam at 11K per week. Consistency and longevity works when selling albums. Even though those numbers aren’t huge, at least they’re not losing a big % of sales weekly.

  • koshka

jobbix – I’m not at all invested in Kelly. I bought her last album.. thought it was OK & my husband REALLY liked. One of the idols said a few days ago (don’t remember which one, probably from an Adam interview) that all pop starts have a shelf life. That is such a true statement.

Congrats to Danny for selling over 65,000 copies of his album and 28,000 copies of his single “My Best Days” last week. Well done and deserved. :)

Also I think that the amount of digital albums he sold was great and is a nice combination of a lot of sales on Itunes and Amazon. I am glad to see that his album is still Top 20 on Itunes and it actually went up a spot to #14, it #15 earlier today.

Most of the other albums ahead of him are albums that have been released this week. It’s nice to see him still hanging in there.

Congratulations, Kris Allen! I remain optimistic that album sales will increase with the buzz and success of this single and the next single release. Jim C. has me conflicted between AWM and BWCU being the next single. I love them both. I’m very happy with the sales overall. LIB has sold impressively well. Such an easy way to help and for so little money. I just watched a photojournalist’s slide show of Haiti’s orphans and it was heartbreaking.

Gokey’s Number Four debut marks the second-best Idol opening week by a Season Eight contestant. Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment opened at Number Three in November 2009, though Lambert’s debut week sales of 198,000 far exceeded the 65,000 Gokey sold. Gokey did out-chart Kris Allen’s self-titled post-Idol (at Number 11 in November) and Allison Iraheta’s Just Like You, which peaked at 35.

Aww, I love seeing the love for FYE in Japan. It’s a continual tit for tat on the boards about it being such a stinker of a first single, but if it’s doing well somewhere else, I can’t call it a total failure. It was just a poor choice for US radio.

And congratulations Kris! FWIW, I really hope the next single isn’t AWM, it’s not a fav of mine. But I have a poor track record for picking singles that are hits ;)

WWFM looks like it’s jumping a few spots on itunes today too. Nice!

  • anovich

The Rolling Stones people have never been pick Kris supporters from what I can tell – Danny had the higher debut ranking but Kris had a larger # of units sold.

  • alaadam

I think I recall on the thread yesterday that someone said it is common for articles to come out like the RS article that just mentions BB rankings without mentioning sales. Does anyone remember who said it? Whoever said it was preparing peeps for these kind of articles. IRRC from what they said, in seasons past, the same thing happened.

  • Truthiness

There has to be a way to find out what being #23 for a single in Australia on iTunes equals in terms of units, the way there is for the US. Adam #23 on iTunes this week meant 54K, I suspect that being #23 in Oz is considerably less units, but no actual idea of numbers. Just because I’m just to lazy to try and come up with a good boolean search on google to find it, doesn’t mean there isn’t one to get these numbers.

Oh and if FYE does do well in Japan’s iTunes, what does that mean for there? hmmmm.

All these iTunes questions I never though I would care about.

And on that note, how is LLWD doing overseas? It’s gotten some love in the Philappines, right? which is cool. But how is it doing elsewhere? And how is KATA doing in those countries it’s being released to beyond iTunes of being an import? Also hmmmm.

  • Mtlfan

on the global track chart, LLWD has gained 1 position. It’s #35 this week. It has been on this top 40 for 7 weeks now :D

Since the U.S sales has decreased by 10%, I think the international sales has been increasing

Well, we know that the Philippines is probably quite comparable (if not less) in terms of what constitutes gold album sales, but the David-David concert drew 115,000 people, 40,000 of which were the paying kind, so that’s probably where the money is. Rumors were that both Davids were paid $300K each for just the one show.

Looking at the increase Daughtry had in digital sales makes me think that Amazon sale did help him out! :) But having said that, the ITUNES downloads are included that, so I think we are still looking at around 3,000 plus in Amazon sales. I think someone estimated when Adam’s digital album was on sale on Amazon, it equaled to about 3,000 downloads. Of course 3,000 out of 198,000 sold during debut week is a pretty small percentage of sales compared to 3000 out of 15,000 units sold.

This leads me to believe there are about 3,000 to 4,000 hardcore Amazon MP3 shoppers out there. :)

  • schoolmama

The money to be made overseas is not from record sales. The object of the promo is to get your name, out there. Air play is the way to reach thousand of fans. The money is in touring and corporate gigs. That is why Beyonce, Madonna and Michael Jackson made a fortune. Madonna had the highest grossing tour of any artist. RCA is doing a great job with Adam and he knows exactly how to handle his interviews, he is always in charge and controls the conversation/s with a smile. RCA is striking while the iron red hot.

Congrats to Danny, Kris and esp Adam.

From what I understand, that’s pretty much true domestically also, with some exceptions obviously where music sales hit big heights. One reason as a Danny fan, I’m very happy to see that he’s lined up with a substantial touring arrangement with Sugarland this spring and into the summer.

Congrats to Kris for going platinum with his single!

I wonder how much this has to do with impulse buying with Danny singing on AI & the album dropping?

I’m sure the high digital sales (19,000)were helped along by AI appearance; but Danny was already charting on the front page of iTunes (he peaked at #3) before the AI appearance-it just bumped him up to #1 for quite a while. I think shortages of the album (no one thought it would sell as well as it did) probably helped it sell well on ITunes also.

Gotta say I agree with Kris fans; although the RS article was comparing debut chart #’s (which was relevant because March sells much less than November), I’d be a little irritated too by the way RS framed that.

” they mention Adam’s sales being bigger than Danny for his #3 place. They could have mentioned the same for Kris who sold 15,000 more for a #11 place…pfff Really don’t like the innuendo that Danny sold more than Kris.
Seems the author is definitly not a Kris’s fan”

“It always annoys me when information is incomplete and therefore leads to incorrect conclusions, “

I agree totally undercooked. Its very annoying when the writer has an ulterior motive [ in this case to make Kris look bad!!]
The week Kris’s album was released [ same for when Adams was released] there were so many popular artists also releasing albums whereas when Danny released his hardly any . Therefore the only true measure was sales not ranking!!
Nothing against Danny but the way some media has scorned Kris in the US is pitiful!!
I want all the idols to do well over time – so to me first weeks sales are irrelevant.[ Kris has proved that with LLWD!]

I don’t think it’s true that an Amazon mp3 album sells around 3,000/week no matter what–it really varies, depending on the pricing, how well the sale is known among fans, how long the deal lasts, if the sale happens on an opening/holiday week, etc. Some weekly Billboard reports seem to indicate a larger boost (though we can’t know for sure until an Amazon mp3 exclusive charts on the Billboard 200 one week):

The only album to bow inside the top 50 of The Billboard 200 is “The 99 Most Essential Beethoven Masterpieces” (X5 Music Group) at No. 29 with 21,000 copies. The collection sold for just $1.99 at Amazon.com’s MP3 store.

and “The 99 Most Essential Mozart Masterpieces,” released at a discounted price on Amazon (X5, No. 34, 15,000).

Snow Patrol notches its highest charting album as “A Hundred Million Suns” (Fiction/Polydor) debuts at No. 9 with 48,000. The Scottish/Irish rock band’s previous best came with 2006′s “Eyes Open,” which peaked at No. 27 and went on to sell 1.16 million copies. Digital downloads accounted for 52% of the new set’s first week sum, no doubt aided by a $3.99 sale price via Amazon’s download store.

It’s interesting to see how the digital album sales vary for the Idols. And, of course, Carrie and Daughtry’s newest albums are selling so many more digital copies compared to the first time out.

RCA is doing a great job with Adam and he knows exactly how to handle his interviews, he is always in charge and controls the conversation/s with a smile. RCA is striking while the iron red hot.

I sure agree, RCA is doing a fabulous job in promoting Adam overseas. It’s hard to keep up with all his interviews, appearances and performances. Have you seen the UK promotion clip they are putting out, its amazing. Can’t wait to see him return on Idol, his album will get a great bounce and I’m sure the show will also in the number of viewers

thanks again for all of you who provided sources and info on Adam’s overseas numbers, it’s really interesting.

Don’t know if anyone is still posting in this thread, thought this might be interesting…

I didn’t know the European market (CD sales) is bigger on whole than the US market. The Asian market and the US market is of the same size. Seems it has also been dropping less in Europe and Asia than in the US the last years… The big countries in Europe for music is England, Germany and France.

I don’t disagree at all that the way it was presented, didn’t paint a full picture as Kris did have more overall sales. But I think it’s not unfair to compare based on chart ranking, since different times in the market have different dynamics. To me, they should really present both figures.
Certainly true that there were more albums releasing last fall but the overall market for CDs selling was also bigger. I’m not sure you can necessarily draw conclusions as to what that means for relative sales among the top 4. (ould Danny have sold even more if his CD came out in the fall? Would Allison have done better with less competition this year, or was it better for her to ride on the media attention for Adam and Kris’s album?
No way to know really. Seems to me the top 3 guys have all done well in their different ways, considering Kris’s single sales as well as his album. Allison hasn’t yet had the same market impact. I’d like to think there, she just needs time to mature into the type of music that suits her best and that people liked most from her on the show.

Yes, agree RS article should have quoted gross sales numbers for all of them if they were going to quote some.

But disagree about the “true Measure”. Chart position is very important, there were certainly many good albums released this March also (Lady A will be the GaGa of album sales or even S. Boyle) like the very popular movie soundtrack Alice, Lifehouse, as well as hot country competition like Easton Corbin and extremely popular Blake Shelton, etc.
That is why Billboard commented on the “impressive sales”. Heck, even Perez Hilton has weighed in on the sales- I’m not going to post a link because he likes to ferment fan wars.
