Idol Sales News – Week Ending 01/12/14

Happy New Season of Idol Day! Woo. Let’s see what kind of sales these guys can rack up in the coming years.

This week’s top album is the “Frozen” soundtrack. The music biz constantly surprises itself. 85K in sales is impressive at this point in January. One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” is expected to be top 6th while their previous album “Take Me Home” is in the top 40. Daughtry is also estimated to be in the top 50.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!

Looks like her label was aiming for top 10. Have they identified her next single?

Top 10 is awesome for a new Country artist – especially a female one. Country radio can be a tough nut to crack.

In early December there was news here on Bo Bice touring with Blood, Sweat & Tears, the legendary horn rock band which was really big from 1968/1969 until mid-1970’s and still exists (after countless personnel changes). Here is a new article on their collaboration as Bice is now their official new lead singer:

Bice sang one of the band’s biggest hits, ‘Spinning Wheel’ on American Idol. I never saw AI when Bice was in it, but I became a huge B, S & T fan at the age of 12 and continue to be one. I even know several members from the peak years, which I couldn’t believe would ever happen.

  • Baptized

Daughtry gets another 7 radio adds on Pop? This song seems to be doing really well! :)

  • girlygirl

They’ve sent “Everybody Sings” to Radio Disney, but I don’t know if that’s supposed to be her next official single or if they just sent it there to test her tween appeal.

I wonder if they are going to try and cross WATT over to HAC

  • windmills

Though WATT has kind of looked flat for a bunch of updates in a row, this morning’s update is arguably a function of the rolling chart effect. Last Wednesday’s update for WATT was an unusually large +81 spins combined with a -0.060 million AI update. This Wednesday’s update reverses that with a loss of spins but an AI gain (a pretty strong AI gain, actually). WATT’s been resurrected from a series of weak updates before and I’ve learned never to count out a Borchetta label no matter what a song’s natural peak would be.

On the other hand, WATT is now dropping at Itunes and its sales have been the main basis of its chart run at radio, especially with meh callout for the majority of its chart run. The fatigue scores on WATT are quite high now. So, it does appear to me the song’s run its course. We’ll see. CRS (in about a month’s time) would be a natural time to get a new single going.

  • Amy Beth

I don’t know when or what the next single is, but her label is teasing her next tour (as an opener) big time! Calling it HUGE, but refusing to say who it is.

She has a Canadian tour next, the song is at #28 on that chart, so they’ll probably work on moving it up there in the meantime.

  • Madilo

“I wonder if they are going to try and cross WATT over to HAC”

That’s what they should do and even Pop.

  • CanadianLady

Has Scotty had any Cdn country adds? If he has, I don’t recall seeing them. That has been baffling me. (Not that I don’t kind of prefer the adds to be given to Cdn singers, but snce they do incldue Americans, why not him?)

  • Amy Beth

Do you know if his label has made the song available for adds in Canada?

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

I was curious how WFS could have 26 Pop adds so far, yet not be charting at all. It turns out the biggest station to add the song is in the #31 market (Salt Lake City) and hadn’t even given the song a test spin yet.

More than half of the stations adding over the history of the song (15 of 26) are in markets of smaller than #100. The biggest supporters of the song are stations in Appleton, WI (#147, 45 spins lw), Beaumont, TX (#141, 33 spins lw), Wilkes-Barre, PA (#71, 31 spins lw), and Tyler. TX (#142, 30 spins lw).

The good news is that none of this week’s adds are likely auto-adds (lw spins < 7 in every case, and for most of last week's adds, too), so if the stations are serious about the song, spins should start picking up. Less good is that two of the 12 stations adding last week then didn't play the song at all in the week after adding it, and 9 of the 12 played it five or fewer times, which is VERY low rotation.

  • CanadianLady

I just assumed it had. Hmm. Maybe not. I expect Kirsten or Windmills would know.

  • tripp_ncwy

What’s up with James Durbin’s single “Parachute” is it getting any spins on radio & go to adds soon?

  • Germanlady23
  • Madilo

I saw his song under cool new music (HAC) on allaccess.

  • Madilo

How much has Adam sold ?

  • ptebwwong

The last official sales of Adam’s “Trespassing” was 183K.

  • DBfan

There are 3 stations that added WFS when HAC did and have been playing it since. 4 more stations added in December before it officially went for adds and those are the ones that are giving it the most spins. So looking at station rankings for current spins, is not the real picture. The stations that added it last week and this week haven’t really begun to play it yet. Which is often the case. It got 8 adds from stations ranked in the 30s and 50s. IMO it’s a good start for an artist that hasn’t been played on pop in over two years and hasn’t had a hit on pop in over four years. It’s too early to tell at this point, but it’s a good start for Daughtry on pop. Hopefully fans and listeners will support…

  • Madilo

    Thank you.

Honestly I’m surprised Daughtry is getting any pop adds at all. even if this song does ok on pop radio itll be a huge step for him compared to his last album.

  • gclay

did not realize Lauren Alaina sold that much good for her

Here’s Roughstock’s album sales for the week of 1/15/14

  • Corrine43180

What a weird comparison, they’re not in the same genre and Scotty won Idol lol. I would expect Scotty to sell more, he sold more of his debut album too. Still a huge drop from album #1. Interesting to me that Danielle is selling more per week than Scotty right now, maybe because her single is doing better on radio.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

    Lauren Alaina (2011) | 998,000 | 424,000

did not realize Lauren Alaina sold that

    She didn’t.

The album number is about 19,000 high, even if all post-show compilations are included (which is fair enough if it’s done that way for everybody). I could believe the Wikipedia numbers lack an update or six for her debut album, but…

The singles total is simply wrong. It should be about 604,000 unless USA Today somehow has inside information, never released to the public or put on Soundscan, on how Alaina’s singles during Idol sold.

I don’t feel up for fact-checking the whole list, but this adds to my lack of being impressed with USA Today’s faux “only the shows we feel like including” list.

  • ptebwwong

I think the comparison was due to Scotty surpassing the recent sophomore albums of Idol alums. He had previously surpassed Kris, Cook, Archuleta, etc. sophomore album sales. The next Idol alum on the list to overtake album sales was Adam.

  • Sicola789

    Edit: never mind

  • Sicola789

    They both sold 4000.

  • Amy Beth

The numbers are rounded to the nearest thousand, but listed in order of sales. Obviously, the #84 album sold more copies than the #112 album.

  • Corrine43180

That is a rounded number, Danielle sold more based on her billboard ranking which is 28 places higher than his.

  • justmefornow

Adds date for radio is 1/27

  • Amy Beth

  • justmefornow

They just added it there last week I believe.

  • Corrine43180

Doesn’t US today have better access to numbers than we do? Once an album is out of the top 200 ( and often before since Mansfield stopped reporting sales) we don’t get sales numbers, but often albums contine to sell. Same with downloads. They cite Soundscan as their source.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

As I said, that would take care of the 19,000 gap for albums.

It doesn’t realistically account for a gap of over 300,000 on singles. It just doesn’t. The residual sales of singles that never got a lot of radio play and are out of the BB 100 just are not high enough to account for that over a reasonable time frame.

  • ptebwwong

Scotty has had a total of 7 total Canadian adds for SYT in it’s history. Those are the number of monitored adds, too. They are the following stations: CHLB, CHSJ, CICS, CICX, CJKC, CJXL, & CKBY.

  • ptebwwong

Looking at the 7 total adds in the history of SYT, it doesn’t seem like the label is making the song available for adds in Canada. Or it’s possible they’re concentrating more on his US success than internationally.

  • Leigh13

    In the U.S.

  • elliegrll

The numbers for both sophomore albums outside of the US aren’t high enough to make a huge difference in the ranking.

  • SaSa8

I don’t think she is outselling him by much. Also have to factor in that her CD came out Nov 25 while Scotty’s CD came out in October.

I think they are a little high but you are low she has sold 415k lmmd 190k GP 40k 18I 40k BB and what ever she sold of her other tracks on the album which I would guess might total 20-25k so 705-710k thats without the singles from the show which who knows is how much. Her album is most likely around 320k plus the 5EP of 85k and the full season 10 album maybe 10k so you get 415k so pretty close.

So, I fact-checked for Scotty and the singles #s may be way off as well (I came up with a known total of 2, 190, 000 but then again some of the last dates we have #s for ILYTB and so on are 2012). The album numbers seem very close, actually.

So, they may all be off by a certain factor–or someone gave them the numbers from singles sold during Idol? Interesting…

  • Corrine43180

Right but single downloads aren’t always released as singles. Could be downloads cherry picked off the album.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

The problem you run into with album-track singles is that there’s no driver for sales to continue at any noticeable rate when the album’s no longer selling — how would people know about these songs?

So logically, a massive surge of album-track song sales should occur at the time of the album release, which is when it occurs for most artists (every time a big act releases an album, lots of tracks shoot to the top of iTunes, too). Yet none of those tracks charted on the BB Hot 100, even though the necessary sales levels would have charted them.

The only thing that would account for such a huge gap in singles numbers is having the Idol sales numbers — but singles numbers for others where we know the album-track sales clearly only include album-track sales and not the hidden Idol-season singles sales.

  • Darko_5

The ranking seems to be based on cd sales not tracks and the cd sales seem accurate are there people from other seasons that sold more total cd’s then Kris at 393K because if not then the list order at least is accurate.

  • rain

Wow! Kind of surprised to see those numbers for Jennifer Nettles.

  • rain

I think she mentioned in a few interviews that she’s pushing for I Wish I Could Break Your Heart as the next single. No announcements yet, though. If ever that’s the case, they can also send that directly to pop, it doesn’t even need a pop version, lol.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Well, the list order is “accurate” if you believe that album sales are the only important measure of sales, and singles are just something we mention in passing but don’t really count.

That’s a bizarre and distorted view of a music industry where singles sales are much stronger than album sales. The correct way to have done the ranking would have been Track Equivalent Albums, which is a known and established way to combine album and singles sales (1 single = 1/10 album, count EPs as half an album). The math in the spreadsheet isn’t even hard.

Combine the writer’s focus on album sales only with his omitting the successes from Nashville Star — which were after Kelly Clarkson, so qualify as “recent,” but we wouldn’t want to let facts or analysis get in the way of a click-bait article on Idol’s “rivalry” with other shows — and what you’ve got is a crappy piece of mindless listicle journalism. That it got several names into a plausible order doesn’t make it into solid analysis.

  • Corrine43180

Maybe Interscope reported those sales to Interscope, whereas Sony didn’t. It’s only post season 9 that they seem off I think

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

I could totally believe that happened. However, if it did, that makes a lot of the rankings meaningless and inaccurate, as I can’t believe that Idol-season sales were huge contributors for Alaina and McCreery but negligible for Cook and Lambert.

If the writer used non-comparable data — rather than taking out the non-comparable bits — that’s right there the sign of a sloppy listicle-maker who doesn’t understand what the numbers mean.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Kelly’s downloads of the duet DYWS with Jason Aldean aren’t mentioned, but Carrie and Jordin’s downloads of their duets are mentioned.

  • YankeeFan08

Oh, I want to see those numbers too!

  • Darko_5

I agree with your math and other issues. I was just wondering since it used Cd as the main criteria if any other idol season had been left out. I thought that was what you were saying.

Curious how you know this? Please share since you seem to have those international numbers.

Country single sales for the week…

LOL. I’d started when I saw a New Comment pop up. Good for you! I’d been watching all pm. So happy for those SYT numbers.:))))

  • Madilo

Platinum is not far for Cassedee :)
Scotty is going gold too :)

  • jayidrocks

Why they wrote, the ranking is by single-track downloads and albums, when they actuelly ranked them only by the album sales?
Specially Jordin and Phillip should rank higher.

  • Karen C

Right, because Cook’s sales are about what we have known from his post Idol sales. If it included his Idol sales, it would probably be much higher. The numbers for the week he had 11 singles in the BB top 100 should be significant enough to make a difference, in addition to what was sold before.

Though they did release Idol compilation albums for Scotty and Lauren, so maybe that’s part of it.
