Airplay stats (numbers in brackets are the increases in audience impressions since last week):

    No. 55 – David Cook ( 2.0 million)
    No. 636 – Kelly Clarkson ( 3.6 million)

Wow at the number of Kelly Clarkson spins in such a short time.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

    YAY! LO GOLD!

    No. 636 – Kelly Clarkson ( 3.6 million)

Wow at the number of Kelly Clarkson spins in such a short time.

Wow, Kelly! Her song is a guaranteed hit. Even though I like the song – I wish it wasn’t as ‘dancy’ and that the drumbeats didn’t swallow her voice up LOL.

    Thanks Kirsten!

  • jpfan

Wow at Kelly’s numbers. Crush manages to surprise me every week at its strength in sales. I still think it has a chance to match Tattoo (that hit 1.8 million right?) although that’s a longshot. It should end up one of the top Idol singles ever. Certainly the biggest selling hit any runner up has had.
And that’s on top of what I still think is relatively disappointing radio play – since it never cracked the Top 10 songs on the Top 40 chart and that’s where the real smash hits live.

  • mac

Seems like showing David on Idol last night has had an effect on album sales. Before the show, DCTR was around 35 in iTunes. This morning it is at 13!

  • jpfan

This was another great week for downloads overall. The top 10 songs were all above 100K plus with the big hits selling 200K for the week. So if January sucks for album sales, it is an incredible month for singles.

  • poporange

Daivd Cook like most artist will probably double his sales with an appearance on American Idol than after wards slowly head back down after the hype. Not surprised after montage numbers went up on I-tunes. BTW I personally never seen AI or afiliated label push anyone with Pr like David Cook.

I am also quite amazed by the numbers for Kellly C and how well Daivd A single “Crush” is doing.

  • IGetCranked

what I still think is relatively disappointing radio play – since it never cracked the Top 10 songs on the Top 40 chart

Clearly the public wanted to hear more of this song… silly PD’s. Hopefully, David can overcome some of the stigma’s placed on him and get better play for future singles.

Congrats to Cook for going Gold this week!

  • frogcooke

Crush doesnt want to die… haha

  • Jolene

Congratulations, the Platinum Rainbow is now joined by the Golden Light! LOL
No, but seriously, great to see Light On cross that mark.

Seems like showing David on Idol last night has had an effect on album sales. Before the show, DCTR was around 35 in iTunes. This morning it is at 13!

Seriously, I zoomed right past the tweens and didn’t understand why I couldn’t find the album in the 20′s and 30′s. It felt good to go back up the page and track it down.
I’ve heard that TV driven bumps don’t appear on the charts so quickly, so supposedly this is still from the “what’s hot” placement? Should we expect it to rise even more with an additional Idol-Kimmel-bump?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    43 David Cook à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 37,714 (-35%; lw 57,735) Total: 524,361 (39) **NOW GOLD**

    Hehe.

  • May

Yay! Gold for Light On! :clap_tb: If Light On and Time of My Life can do this well, I can’t wait to see how some of Cook’s better songs do. Poporange, I’m also very impressed with the good PR he’s getting. Methinks Idol is very proud of this winner!

  • spanishfan

Congratulations LO – For Gold. According to latest HHD DCTR has sold 862,000 and with this weeks rise on itunes and Amazon looks like being a good week hopefully to 900,000 or over and then on to platinum.

According to reports the Kimmel show was outstanding and was very very well received. He sang 5 songs and KOTN was one of them. You will all find the performances on utube on the internet. Must say they are outstanding.

  • poporange

PR thing for the record is not a bad thing its very good just wished they treated everyone the same. AI “keeping eyes on you” treat him right do not sufficate the lad and give him freedom.

  • tinawina

I’ve never rooted for someone who went on to do this well before. This is all a new experience to me. LOL. Yay Gold for Light On! Yay AI actually promoting him! (well, they do that every year unless your name is Taylor. ha) Yay for Itunes bumps!

  • FolkFan

Well, AI is definitely pushing the concept that “winning = superstar.” I fully expect to see them giving Kelly a great performance slot, and didn’t Taylor say that he was going to appear on AI as well? Surely Carrie will show up, as well. I’d think that we’d see the other winners, as well, depending on what they have out this year.

That said, AI will also be good to a number of the non-winners, including, I’m sure, DA. I had forgotten what a great performance slot they gave Bo Bice last year—Top 4 results show. I fully expect to see both Davids have nice performance slots this year, along with several others (Kellie, Daughtry, etc.).

Thanks for the numbers, Kirsten. Very glad to see LO hit gold and continuing to grow in airplay.

  • SashaB

Thanks Kirsten. Great to see these numbers.

Yay for another Gold plaque/record for DC. Love that Light On went gold. I am so happy that this single seems to have some legs. It does appear that DCTR and LO got a nice sales bounce last night/today from the iTunes front page ad, to AI buzz/montage, and DC’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel. DC is the poster child for AI in terms of launching undiscovered talent. So glad that 19Evil chose to show that great DC montage in the beginning to kick off the new season.

Thanks for Kelly’s numbers. Impressive, indeed. I knew Kelly’s song would take off. Yay. Top40 radio will just sound so much better with Kelly’s songs playing. Move over Katy Perry. She’s been missed.

Actually it wasn’t that terrible a week for album sales (down around 26% from last week). Relatively speaking of course.

  • temkanoe

Wow… Crush might go double platinum.

Go Light on….it’s all i hear on the radio now.

  • serenade

Crush is such an amazing seller. It was also on 92010 last night playing for a full two minutes in an almost sex scene. Go figure.

  • Jolene

Billboard 200 chart news is up

So DCTR ends up above Rihanna at 18, unlike HDD projected – they switched spots on Billboard.
The rounded figure will still likely be 19k, since Kings of Leon who sit one place above him are said to have sold rounded 19k.
This would put DCTR at 861k total, right?

Hopefully Brian Mansfield will come through soon with figures for Archie as well.

  • jumpstart

Crush is such an amazing seller. It was also on 92010 last night playing for a full two minutes in an almost sex scene. Go figure.

Yay for the promo although the thought of Archie’s song used in that context is just a tad perplexing.

  • soundscene

Yay for the promo although the thought of Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song used in that context is just a tad perplexing.

I would have thought so too, but it worked surprisingly well. lol.

  • dante

lol at the thought of what DA thinks of Crush playing during an almost sex scene.

  • aidc08

I am curious: Do USO appearances help sales at all? I believe DC heads to Iraq next week.

  • 123abc456

I am not sure about USO tours. I think if the guys and gals like him they might buy his CD. I think it is admirable that one of the first things DC does is a USO tour. If I recall right you only see snipets of these tours. I think they like to keep them low key.

  • ladymadonna

It was also on 92010 last night playing for a full two minutes in an almost sex scene. Go figure.

I’ll admit I did a little double-take at that one, but seriously? This is fantastic exposure for Archie. I did read that 90210 was hurt a little bit last night in the ratings by, ironically, the Idol premiere. But even still, when focused to the right demo, these types of synched song placements can have a huge impact no matter what size the raw audience (Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, etc.). This could cause a nice bump for ‘Crush’ and the album as well.

I did notice that Archie’s album was up 63% according to Amazon’s “Movers & Shakers” list (Cook also has recieved a nice spike there, moving back up to #13 overall), so I think the media blitz and broadcast of the AI8 premiere is doing its thing quite nicely for everyone.

Here’s hoping for a strong(er) week of sales across the industry but especially for Idol alumni next week….

  • soundscene

    Hot 100
    lw TW Artist Title
37 39 DAVID COOK LIGHT ON

I thought Crush would fall out of the top 50 and go recurrent this week, but I guess not.

  • weareallinnocent

So no actual album numbers, or other digital download numbers? Phooey.

Brian Mansfield is no Ken Barnes! LOL

  • FolkFan

I suspect that Brian was maybe a little overwhelmed today. The first week of covering Idol episodes. I bet (hope) that we get numbers tomorrow.

I’m still watching for leaks from other sites, but so far, no joy.

DCTR is also #7/#1 Pop on iTunes – the AI/Kimmel pimpage must be working..hehe

  • jpfan

AI pimped Cook last night? I hadn’t noticed. HDD has their predictions up for next week and Taylor Swift could be #1 with less than 60K albums sold. So this could be the lowest selling album week ever. Hehe.

If Cook sells additional albums to a tiny fraction of the 30 million that watched the show, he’ll easily be back in the Top 10. Anything above 20K will probably put you there.

  • May

DCTR is also #7/#1 Pop on iTunes – the AI/Kimmel pimpage must be working..hehe

That’s awesome! I just checked the latest itunes feed and Light On is #14! I hope these numbers last for a few more days.

  • cookcricket

May just beat me to the punch on LO, and was impressed with the #22 I saw since I didn’t look at the latest feed. It’s also in the top 10 on pop.

Woot Woot!!! Go DCTR!!!!! Go LO!!

Does anyone have the pimpage footage? My VCR failed me last night so I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get to watch idol.

FOX is blocking everywehre right now – I tried uploading it to YT and Dailymotion..but was pulled off. :(

I’ll try uploading it on Zshare..

  • sma11ie

Ha, jpfan, I got your humor the first time. So from what I hear, it’s 2 nights’ worth of pimpage now? I didn’t watch last night’s KC auditions epi, so I’d like to second May’s request–if anyone has DC-related clips from last night, I’d be much obliged. Is igrecman not doing AI8 anymore?

ETA: Thanks for the heads up widz, must be that 10% ratings decline that’s got Fox shaking in its boots, heh.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

All AI videos got pulled, I think. Igrecman made a post on idolforums that Dailymotion is blocking the vids now..

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

Thank you for the number Jpfan

  • Jolene

I’m seein LO at #13 right now in the link May gave to iTunes live feed.

Isn’t this the highest it’s been, in, umm… Well, since it first came out?

Had to go to the Pop page on iTunes just to see the album at #1 with its cover displayed. Lovely.

I join in the request to upload anything DC related somewhere. If no video site works, a download link will do the trick… I hope it’s OK to ask, but the subject has come up.
Igrecman will be missed. Ah well, my country has Ep 1 tommorow and Ep 2 the day after, I guess I can wait.

  • cheese

Wow, I never thought LO would see anything higher than 25 or so again. Did they play part of the song last night? And, if so, since when does hearing LO make people want to buy it? lol. I’m kind of sad that I missed the David Cook infomercial. It’s good to have your manager produce the #1 show on TV, I guess.

The album is up to #5 this morning. I know the sales are probably still pretty nominal (especially this week), but he should be able to maintain his numbers from last week and maybe enter the Top 10 again.

  • SashaB

JPfan, thank you. Way to go David Cook. Staying in the Top 20 again. Awesome.

As for DC pimpage on AI last night. Jim Cantiello’s comment from his blog: “This season is just a giant promo for David Cook” seems to be helping the iTunes movement – and hopefully sales. DCTR is #5 on overall albums and LO is #22. This is the highest either have been since the album launched in mid November. Let’s see if we can spot DC next week. It’ll be like where’s Waldo.

^^ Thanks widz, is that just stuff from episode 1 or episode 2 also? I don’t really care about the commercial since I’ve seen it, but what about the interview with his mom and step dad?

  • Trina

Wow, I never thought LO would see anything higher than 25 or so again. Did they play part of the song last night? And, if so, since when does hearing LO make people want to buy it? lol.

They played his AI commercial..during the show LOL Not just that but it was the extended version which I don’t think was ever on TV before. Oddly enough I discovered scanning some boards last night that some people have never seen that commercial before, and some never even heard LO before.
I must say I loved the David Cook infomercial :biggrin_wp: :clap_tb:

Yay for actual album sales numbers. Thanks, jpfan.

Actually, LO has been selling better for the last, say, month and a half, once its audience impressions finally strengthened. Not huge sales, but steadily in the 20K to 30K zone, (setting aside the spike that most digital downloads had after Christmas).

DCTR, LO, and Magic Rainbow have all had nice jumps on itunes, and so has DATA and DA’s new single. Probably doesn’t hurt matters that itunes has DC’s, DA’s, Jordin’s, and Daughtry’s albums all in their “What’s Hot” section on the front page of itunes.

  • mary111

I must say I loved the David Cook infomercial :biggrin_wp: :clap_tb:

    I totally agree!!!

And WOW, to the album moving up to #5 on itunes and LO #13. Totally Awesome!!!

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

    Whoa Kelly! Not surprising though..hehe

  • cheese

Great numbers for Kelly! Is the song going to be on iTunes next week?

When do people think DC’s next single will be released? It looks like LO will probably start sliding on Top 40 while it keeps gaining on HAC. Will the label wait and just let LO ride out its HAC run or would it make sense to move forward with the next single and just release it to Top 40 at first?

  • JudyOhio

Regarding the actual album sales numbers posted upthread. Now, are those the definite final numbers? I ask because it’s not posted officially at the top of the thread yet. Also, it doesn’t appear that the USA Today guy has come through with them yet.

  • ladymadonna

JudyOhio – yes, those are Soundscan actuals. I’m sure Kirsten will post them up top soon. Not sure whether Brian at Idol Chatter is going to cover sales this week or not. He did post rounded numbers for chartting Idols last week, and said he was trying to find a source for off-chart sales, but it looks like maybe he’s not planning to cover sales until he has a definite plan in place.

  • Kirsten

Thanks jpfan. I’ve updated the main post with the numbers plus a few bonuses.

  • Kirsten

An interesting examination of where the sales go:
David Cook Sold 19,394 albums last week

Digital Album Sales: 2,901 (e.g. iTunes)
Internet Album Sales: 947 (e.g. Amazon)
Mass Merchandiser and Non Traditional: 14,978 (e.g. Walmart, Best Buy)
Indy/Small Chain Stores: Not in the Top 100 (e.g. Mom and Pop Record Store)
Top Album retailers: 4,416 (e.g. Walmart)

Obviously, there is some overlap there (e.g. with the Top Album retailers and other categories), but it’s an interesting case study (for those rare times we get this detailed of numbers).

  • JudyOhio

Thanks ladymadonna and kirsten (and jpfan).

Thanks Kirsten for the breakdown. Good stuff. As much as I enjoy following iTunes and the rankings, iTunes is such a small portion of the overall sales though. It’s still the traditional big box retailers that sell the most units, even though digital and online album sales are moving up. Wonder how this pie breakdown will look in 2 years time?
