Updated with album numbers.

Today, we find out exactly how much Adele crushes the competition by, how the Idols weathered the Grammy surge and whether the plug that The Voice gave its contestants helped at all.

Let’s get one thing straight: Adele Rules

Even if you don’t care for her music, you have to admit that she’s sold well. To say the least. Billboard was so excited about it, they released her numbers early. Adele’s “21″ topped the BB200 for its 21st week and sold 730K (up 207% from the previous week). This is her biggest sales week, even bigger than the 399K she did before Christmas. It is the biggest week for any album since Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter IV” debuted with 964K. A non-debuting album hasn’t fared this well since Josh Groban’s 2007 Christmas album that moved 757K copies. Only one other album has moved more albums outside of the Christmas weeks and a month of release…”Titanic” sold 848K in Feb 1998.

“21″ is the longest-running No. 1 album by a woman in history (Whitney’s “Bodyguard” held that record previously) and it is the longest-running No. 1 in Soundscan history.

Here are the albums with the most weeks at No. 1 in the nearly-56 year history of the Billboard 200 chart:

Weeks at No. 1, Title, Artist, Peak Year
54, “West Side Story” soundtrack, 1962**
37, “Thriller,” Michael Jackson, 1983
31, “Rumours,” Fleetwood Mac, 1977
31, “South Pacific” soundtrack, 1958
31, “Calypso,” Harry Belafonte, 1956
24, “Purple Rain,” Prince and the Revolution/Soundtrack, 1984
24, “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack, 1978
21, “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em,” M.C. Hammer, 1990
21, “21,” Adele, 2011

This week marks the 52nd week “21″ has been on the BB200. Its lowest point on the album was No. 7th on December 10th, 2011. “19″ sold 87K for 4th place and its best selling week and position on the chart in its history.

As for singles, she moved 887K of those (up 5,730% from the 15K she sold the previous week). She put a total of 8 songs on the 75 slot Digital Songs chart. Three singles from “21″ moved a total of 709K (“Rolling in the Deep” 271K (+115%), “Set Fire to the Rain” 254K (+36%) and “Someone Like You” 183K (+44%).

I feel like a broken record, but WOW. Did not realize Adele sold a massive amounts of singles well.

The are going to be shipping 21 through this year.

Does someone know if that is one of the biggest Grammy boosts?

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

Besides being a great singer, and having fantastic material, Adele’s music has really resonated with a lot of people.  A lot of people, myself included, were getting sick of the music scene being so soulless. Adele has put much needed emotion back into popular music!

Question: Has Jessie J and Katy Perry ever been seen together in the same room?

Because every time I hear “Domino”, I think it’s Katy. Surely that has to be one of the rejects off of her album or something. They even look kind of alike.

Anyway, I just want to add this one:

    45. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen (Canadian Idol – you don’t often see these guys on the US charts).

Pam  Just a heads up – you must have a typo error on Lauren’s stats above. And while I’m here, thank you very much for getting all these numbers for us!

    From Billboard:

Whitney Houston Has No. 2 Album, Grammys Push Big Gains on Billboard 200

    As earlier reported, Adele’s
“21″ spends a 21st nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard
200 albums chart, selling 730,000 (up 207%) in the week after the
    Feb. 12 Grammy Awards.

    The diva also moves up
five slots to No. 4 on the tally with her first album, “19,” which
sold 87,000 last week (up 144%).

    Whitney Houston’s
“Whitney: the Greatest Hits,” climbs from No. 6 to No. 2 in the
first full week after the singer’s death on Feb. 11. The album sold
175,000 for a 174% gain. It’s the best sales week (and highest
charting position) for the set, which was first released in 2000.
Its previous high came in its debut frame, when it started at No. 5
with 158,000 on the chart dated June 3, 2000.

Houston has a total of seven albums on the chart this week:
“Whitney Houston” (72-37 with 17,000; up 113%), “The Bodyguard”
    soundtrack (80-38 with 17,000; up 123%), “I Look To You” (118-65
    with 9,000; up 81%), “Whitney” (122-87 with 7,000; up 46%), “The
Preacher’s Wife” soundtrack (183-90 with 7,000; up 46%) and “My Love
    Is Your Love” (a re-entry at No. 193 with 4,000; up 96%).

Grammy Awards performer Bruno Mars jumps 30-8 with “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” (38,000; up 133%), country album of the year winner Lady Antebellum zips 17-9 with “Own the Night” (37,000; up 47%) and nominee/performer the Civil Wars
fly 41-10 with “Barton Hollow” (36,000; up 178%). For the latter,
this is the album’s best sales week and marks a new peak
    position.

The “Now 41″ set holds at No. 3
(94,000; down 33%) while the “2012 Grammy Nominees” album rises 8-5
with 85,000 (up 66%). Van Halen’s “A Different Kind of Truth” falls 2-6 in its second week (58,000; down 69%) and Paul McCartney’s “Kisses on the Bottom” slips 5-7 in its sophomore frame (58,000; down 22%).

Outside the top 10 we see big Grammy-fueled gains from Grammy performers/nominees Coldplay, Rihanna, the Band Perry, Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Taylor Swift, Bon Iver and Skrillex
    — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Coldplay’s “Mylo Xyloto”
moves 14-11 (35,000; up 26%), Rihanna’s “Talk That Talk” rises
    18-17 (26,000; up 11%) and the Band Perry’s self-titled set kicks
    24-19 (24,000; up 22%).

    Foo Fighters’ “Wasting
    Light” glows with a 59-21 jump (23,000; up 134%), Mumford’s “Sigh No
More” moves 29-23 (23,000; up 40%) and Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now”
rallies 42-25 (20,000; up 60%). Best new artist winner Bon Iver (who
was also spoofed on the Feb. 18 “Saturday Night Live”) climbs 49-29
with “Bon Iver” (19,000; up 61%) while fellow best new artist
nominee Skrillex sees his “Bangarang” EP move 32-31 (19,000; up
    23%).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry’s
“Part of Me” makes its expected No. 1 debut, selling 411,000
downloads in its first week. It’s the biggest sales week for a song
since one year ago (chart dated March 5, 2011), when Lady Gaga’s
“Born This Way” was No. 1 with 509,000 in its first full week of
release, and Cee Lo Green’s “F**k You (Forget You)” was No. 2 with
    412,000.

Aside from Perry, there are two more debuts in the top 10 this week. Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” sails in at No. 7 with 204,000, while Chris Brown’s “Turn Up the Music” motors in at No. 9 with 180,000.

For Brown, “Turn” marks his best debut sales week for a song,
and his overall best sales week since “Kiss Kiss” sold 277,000 over
    Christmas week of 2007.

    Whitney Houston’s “I Will
Always Love You” climbs 3-2 (367,000; up 89%) while Adele’s
“Rolling in the Deep” ascends 10-3 (271,000; up 115%). Adele has two
more songs in the top 10: “Set Fire to the Rain” holds at No. 4
(254,000; up 36%) while “Someone Like You” moves 9-8 (183,000; up
    44%).

Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” slips 2-5 (252,000; down 3%) and fun.’s “We Are Young” (featuring Janelle Monae) comes off its Chevy Super Bowl-ad high, falling 1-6 (244,000; down 17%). LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” is also moving down this week, moving 5-10 (136,000; down 20%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Feb. 19)
totaled 7.72 million units, up 13% compared to the sum last week
(6.83 million) and up 7% compared to the comparable sales week of
2011 (7.18 million). Year to date album sales stand at 41.70
million, up 4% compared to the same total at this point last year
    (39.95 million).

    Digital track sales this past
week totaled 32.28 million downloads, up 12% compared to last week
(28.93 million) and up 11% stacked next to the comparable week of
2011 (28.97 million). Year to date track sales are at 202.78
million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year
    (188.69 million).

Next week’s Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Adele’s “21″ debuted at No. 1 with 352,000. Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never: the Remixes,” fell 2-1 with 102,000 (down 38%).

IMO, Jessie has a slightly huskier tone to her voice, though the song does sound similar to Katy.  It was co-written by Dr. Luke/Claude Kelly/Max Martin, so I assume that’s were the familiarity is.  Since Jessie co-wrote the song, I don’t think it’s a Katy reject.

  • Valentin432

411k should be good enough to get the n°1 spot on the Hot 100 for KP this week, I wonder wheter IWAL will be on the chart as a new single, if that’s the case it will battle SFTTR for the n°2 spot with Kelly probably n°4.
For next week, Kelly has a good chance to get the n°1 back, the biggest competition is probably SFTTR.

Scotty should sell 1M in the next two months, even sooner if he gets an AI spot.
Kellie needs a single real fast, Lauren sales hopefully will remain steady until an AI appearance.
Daughtry needs a new single fast and hopefully Kelly can get to platinium if the third and fourth singles hit.

    Astrovision/Astroplus Top-Selling Albums OPM February 13 – 19, 2012:

Idol alum David Archuleta debuts on the Astro OPM chart with “Forevermore” at number one. http://www.philcharts.com/2012/02/21/astrovisionastroplus-top-selling-albums-opm-february-13-19-2012/

This is for the presale; the album itself is scheduled to be released sometime next month.

While the Phil Charts site doesn’t show the overall sales chart for Astro, Pinoy Magazine posted it here: http://t.co/2TJxtGt0 It shows that David had the #2 album overall (foreign & domestic combined) behind Whitney Houston.

Still waiting for the numbers from Odyssey. I don’t think the Philippines has one central chart like Billboard — if they do, I can’t find it. Maybe someone could post it if such a thing exists.

You have LA with over 2 mill in sales–just an extra number:)

Yay for the increase for Scotty!  And wow to Kelly’s single sales (nothing about Adele need be said:)…

  • Hazehel

Which post is it?  I’ll try to correct it.

It’s the sales figure for Lauren, apparently she sold over 2 million albums now.  The mistake is Idol Chatter’s, not yours (same number given by Kirsten).  The number should be 248K.

Looks like Scotty’s album will go past 1 million in sales sometime in next 5-7 weeks if it stays more or less on its current pace

Adele’s numbers are just ridiculous. And not just for her current album — her 1st album is reaping a lot of the benefits. Yay for that, because it is a really strong album

I’m very happy to see the increases for Lauren, Scotty, Mandisa, and Daughtry.  Adele is a sales beast!

  • Blower

    This one Pam :)

    Lauren Alaina, Wildflower (4,000, +3%, 2248,000) (#174 BB200)

Since when idol chatter don’t have James sales figure? They have Mandisa and Daughtry, their album aren’t charting in few weeks . Is it possible to say that James album sold below 2,000? wew!

  • http://twitter.com/DorkAngel Goboywonder

I still see 2248,000 for Alaina.

Happy to see David A. with a #1. I hope the OPM album will be his biggest seller yet. The songs I’ve heard so far are so  beautiful, I want it.

  • windmills

Who runs the world? Adele. It’s just fun to see her numbers continuing to explode and with them, a lot of excuses by record label execs.

Reporting from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

Scotty’s TTWG held at #19 on Billboard with a meh (for that part of the chart) audience gain of 405k. Tim McGraw passed as expected, Brad Paisley’s Camouflage dropped below TTWG and went recurrent. Zac Brown Band is fixing to pass at Billboard and another week like this one would put TTWG at risk of getting passed by Jason Aldean too. However the Mediabase updates this week make it look like TTWG is going to put up a  fight because it’s gaining strong. There is 1 definite recurrent next week at Billboard in Toby Keith’s Red Solo Cup and IF Luke Bryan’s I Don’t Want This Night To End starts dropping faster or The Band Perry’s All Your Life really crashes, there could be 1 more.

CaseyJ’s LDCIAN had a good, countdown boosted week with a gain of 781k AIs. The bad news is it got outgained by the songs immediately ahead of it (Chris Cagle gained almost 700k more). But, it moved up to #26 with Camouflage going recurrent. Eric Church’s Springsteen is gaining fast enough that it should pass LDCIAN next week at Billboard. Right now it looks like Josh Turner might take a little longer to pass there. LDCIAN outgained Gloriana and Rodney Atkins’s songs which over 1.5 million AIs behind it at Billboard, so that’s good. So, LDCIAN has a good chance at holding onto #26 at Billboard this week depending on how much airplay Good Girl gets in 4 days of airplay.

Lauren’s GP had a bad week at Billboard, losings its bullet and losing 133k AIs. It held at #33 but leads Jana Kramer’s Why Ya Wanna by only about 30k AIs (I’m expecting Jana’s song to pass this week). Alan Jackson and Dustin Lynch are also likely to pass this week with The Farm also threatening unless GP puts up a fight. Judging from GP’s Mediabase AI gains this week, it might be putting up that fight but I don’t think it’ll hold off all those songs for too much longer. There’s also Good Girl coming so like I said on Monday these next couple weeks may be a little rough for GP. But, I expect it to hang in there and make t30.

Kelly’s MKIA jumped 7 spots to #52 with a strong AI gains of 556k. This is still test mode for the song.

On the Country Indicator chart Kellie’s 100 Proof held at #33 with 548 plays (+22). I don’t know when the label will start promoting it to the main chart. Maybe in mid March after Kenny’s single is done. I know Sara Evans’s next single (Anywhere) is supposed to hit radio in April but I’m thinking 100 Proof will get started before then. Kellie’s supposed to be performing at the Sony boat show tomorrow so maybe there’s some groundwork that’s being laid this week at CRS (Country Radio Seminar, when lots of radio people descend on Nashville to be wined & dined while labels showcase their artists).

    Idol related ads: None

Speaking of CRS I’m interested to see what’s sung at the different showcases this week if our Idols sing 2 songs. I expect Kellie to perform 100 Proof and maybe Tough. Carrie’s supposed to perform so tomorrow’s Sony boat show could be her debut live performance of Good Girl. CaseyJ will do LDCIAN if he performs (I think he will) and if he gets another song, it’ll be interesting seeing what it is. He already played Drive at the boat show last year. Scotty and Lauren will probably play 2 songs apiece at the UMG luncheon today, and that could give an indication of what the label has in mind for their next singles (Lauren’s is a long way away though because GP still has work to do).

Thanks for the thread Kirsten.  :)

As has been mentioned in the past, Brian has access to the numbers for the albums on the BB200 chart, but he also has access to numbers for the country and Christian charts, which is why he will post those numbers when he doesn’t have the sales info to post the pop or rock albums.

Daughtry’s current album IS in the BB200. The 2,000 sales figures is for an older album — Brian likely has access to the catalog album sales charts (which is for older albums)

James’ album sold less than whatever the total was this week for the #200 album on the BB chart. That’s all we would know for sure

  • Anonymous

I thought Scotty already had over a million in sales.  Am i missing something here? Everyone seems to have different comments about this…. :-/

  • larc

Looks like Scotty’s album will go past 1 million in sales sometime in
next 5-7 weeks if it stays more or less on its current pace.

Idol will have its 400th show in 2 weeks (Mar 7).  If they do something special, I’m thinking Scotty may perform.  Should it happen, enough bump from that would likely get him over the 1M mark even sooner.

  • Anonymous

Scotty has already been certified platinum. That means he’s shipped 1 million albums not sold. Scotty’s sold 939,000 albums currently. This is how the music industry has always certified albums. Daughtry has already been certified gold & they’ve sold 385,000 albums so far. Lady A was certified platinum about 4 months before they actually sold a million copies. As long as the demand for the album is there, they think the artist will reach gold/platinum & will certify the album.

  • Anonymous

Since when idol chatter don’t have James sales figure? They have Mandisa & Daughtry and their album aren’t charting in this weeks . Is it possible to say that James album sold below 2,000? wew!

I see that Girlygirl already answered, but I’ll leave in the info. about Daughtry.

Not necessarily.  We know that Brian has easy access to both the Christian and Country charts, because he is located in Nashville.  That’s nothing new.  Sometime last year he connected with someone who has access to Daughtry’s numbers.  It’s been months since that happened.  While that person will give Brian Mansfield the weekly numbers for Daughtry’s first album, he won’t give him the grand total.  As usual, Brian doesn’t have easy access to the albums that are out of the BB 200, but sometimes he has someone who can give him those numbers.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for that info…. it’s so confusing when you read so many different comments from people. I’ve read that shipped means SOLD (just not scanned) because these shipped albums are paid for in advance….and that’s how they determine their decision for Platinum certification…Well, either way, Scotty’s sales look pretty steady.

  • OffLeash

Whatever the numbers are, what’s obvious to me is that LMB isn’t selling the album in any significant way. I wonder what Wind Up’s strategy is. Have they given up on MOABD and are concentrating on touring? If that’s the case, it’s a shame because there are great tracks on the album that could help boost the sales. Not sure I get what they’re up to, if anything.

With all the latest gigs and nominations lined up, I get that Wind Up and James both agreed on going the heavy metal direction now. That’s really awesome for James since that’s what he always wanted to do, and he’s getting outstanding support from rock media and metal legends.  But then shouldn’t the label get rid of LMB and release Outcast to rock radio like Mick Mars said they were going to? Wouldn’t it help James’ metal career more than a moribund poppish single nobody cares for? Vegetating in the 30s on HAC with no new sales is nothing to be excited about either, but maybe that’s just me. [/soapbox]

“Who runs the world? Adele. It’s just fun to see her numbers continuing
to explode and with them, a lot of excuses by record label execs.”

Windmills, could you point me at some of those excuses? I would find them interesting to read, not because I think Adele is going to change the quality of music that is accepted on Pop, or the singles that get selected – although I wish that were true – I would just get a kick out of these execs rationalizing why they didn’t see this coming. Schadenfreude, I suppose.

If Adele’s 21 keeps selling at its current rate of about 140K per week, it should go Diamond (10M) around mid year.  The latest album to do that was Usher’s Confessions released in 2004.  It was certified Diamond in November 2008.

I will be interested to see if it helps with Adds next week.  I have to say that Jana’s song is not really any good not clear to me why she is moving up the chart.

I do think Lauren was probably booked for the NA gig for radio as a sort of comeback statement. I don’t think the performance will help or hurt adds but it never hurts to foster a little more good will and remind people of your talent.

As far as Jana Kramer’s song, I wouldn’t have picked it out as a hit but it’s performing very well so far. I can’t say I prefer Georgia Peaches (if anything I really prefer the production of Jana’s song) but obviously I’d like to see GP do well to set up other singles for Lauren.

Incipit: Windmills, could you point me at some of those excuses? Schadenfreude, I suppose.

I think that was bad writing on my part. I was talking about the excuses exploding along with Adele’s numbers but maybe I should’ve said the excuses were imploding. The point I was trying to make is that as much as execs have blamed downloading and fragmentation on the entertainment scene for lower record sales, and as much as radio execs have decided centralized playlists and familiarity is the best way to keep their ratings up, the way Adele’s motivated people to buy her music says they’re not getting the whole picture. Because, it is still possible to get people to buy in. And, you don’t even need to be everywhere in the regular and social media to do it!

I agree Adele’s success is probably not going to change the way any of these people do business but she should make them reevaluate their assessment of what makes people buy into somebody’s music.

Thanks for input I should say I like Jana’s song well enough but not really her voice or how she sings it if that makes sense.  GP has grown on me would not have picked it though for her single.

This’ll make Kirsten happy. Scotty just performed You Make That Look Good at the UMG luncheon. And, it looks like it’s just 1 song apiece from most Universal acts. King George was an exception, obviously.

Hi windmills. I just want to ask if “You Make That Look Good” is the next single do you think it’s a good choice?

I like the song & think it’s radio-friendly. It’s upbeat & different from his first 2 singles. I think it has a good chance of doing really well & charting in the top 10 & could be Scotty’s breakout hit.

    From HDD:

    One Day Sales:

    ADELE WILL RULE AGAIN

Tyga, fun., Chiddy Bang, Sleigh Bells, Chieftains Top New Release Slate

Adele’s 21 will easily score another week at #1, her 22nd, with an estimated total now close to 300k.
    That
would send the album up to 7.6 million over the course of its year in
the marketplace, and makes it the favorite to finish as the top-sellng
album for two years in a row, a first for the Soundscan era.

Of course, we’ll have a better idea tomorrow for the midweeks, as well as a read on Whitney Houston titles now that physical retail has received stock. Here are this week’s key debuts, based on one-day sales reports from those online and offline retailers who haven’t closed up shop and set up Rick Santorum campaign headquarters:

Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Republic rapper Tyga’s sophomore album, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, should do 70-80k, which is all digital sales, since the physical copy of the album was pulled due to an uncleared sample from Martin Luther King’s
“I Have a Dream” speech. Tyga is an acronym which stands for “Thank You
God Always” for the prolific mixtape artist of Vietnamese-Jamaican
origin, whose real name is Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson and whose previous album, 2008′s No Introduction, was on the Decaydance label.

Fueled by Ramen/Atlantic N.Y.-based indie pop-rockers fun.’s sophomore album, Some Nights, is set for 50-60k in first-week sales, thanks to the smash single, “We Are Young” featuring Janelle Monae, which gained momentum from its use in a widely seen Chevy Sonic “Stunt Anthem” Super Bowl spot. The song was also covered in a Glee episode last December.
Virgin/EMI Philly alterna-hip-hop band Chiddy Bang’s debut, Breakfast, featuring samples from the likes of Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Passion Pit and MGMT, is on target for between 30-35k in sales.
Mom + Pop/RED noise-pop trio Sleigh Bells’ Reign of Terror, their sophomore effort, is slated for 25-30k, no doubt boosted by last weekend’s Saturday Night Live performance.
Hear Music/Concord’s traditional Irish band and six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains mark their 40th anniversary with Voice of Ages, which is slated for 15-18k. The album features collaborations with new artists like The Civil Wars, Bon Iver, Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Decemberists, Pistol Annies, the Low Anthem, Punch Brothers, Imelda May and Lisa Hannigan.

Album sales were up 13% vs. last week, up 7% vs. the same week last year and up 4% year to date.

Track sales were up 12% vs. last week, up 12% vs. the same week last year and up 7% year to date.TEA (Track Equivalent Album) sales were up 13% vs. last week, up 9% vs. same week last year and up 5% year to date.

ptebwwong: Hi windmills. I just want to ask if “You Make That Look Good” is the next single do you think it’s a good choice? I know you would have liked “Walk in the Country” to be the next single, but I could have seen this YMTLG released as a 4th single anyway.

I like the song & think it’s radio-friendly. It’s upbeat & different from his first 2 singles. I think it has a good chance of doing really well & charting in the top 10 & could be Scotty’s breakout hit.

I’m good with it. I’m on Team Any Uptempo Other Than Water Tower Town and I’m pretty sure I suggested YMTLG as a single when I reviewed the album. I’d rank WITC and Write My Number On Your Hand ahead of it as songs/performances but I really do think YMTLG will make a strong single with a good shot at t10.

Lauren sang Dirt Road Prayer at the UMG luncheon. I’m actually a little surprised she didn’t sing Georgia Peaches but I think they chose the song that was most likely to impress the crowd there.

Based on the tweets I’m seeing from the luncheon, they both got good responses. The biggest responses at the luncheon so far seem to have been for George Strait who was the surprise opener (no surprise he got a standing ovation), Kacey Musgraves (who signed with Lost Highway last year, love her – this is the song she performed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW5JRYt5ZGU), and Chris Stapleton (founder and former guitarist of the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers who’s a very successful Nashville songwriter in his own right).

  • LVD

Speaking of CRS I’m interested to see what’s sung at the different showcases this week if our Idols sing 2 songs. The annual Sony Nashville boat show is tomorrow evening and the UMG luncheon is today.

I think Casey is definitively performing on the boat tomorrow. His whole new band are gearing up for a performance tomorrow it can only be for the boat. (Okay and they are also shooting more music videos today).
Casey already did a two hour guitar pull yesterday with Wade Bowen and Tyler Farr. But that was obviously just a new artists introduction from BNA/ Columbia.
It would be interesting to see if he performs Drive again, but it will be a bit funny to perform the same song a year later, it would be interesting to see what reaction he gets for the song this time, Drive has evolved a lot and Casey has developed a lot in a year. There might be some truth in it that a section of people are bit tired over production and autotune. Acoustic Drive already has 82k views, and people seem to like the fact that the song doesn’t have any production.
I think they performed two songs last year on the boat, I hope it will be two songs again, LDCIAN and Drive together is a good combination.

I think BNA will really be pushing Kenny Chesney’s song this week, judging by the ad he got. The song isn’t that great but if it makes no. 1 this week then BNA can fully concentrate on others like Kellie and Casey, which would be nice, and good timing.

Interesting choice for Scotty to perform at the luncheon.

I’m lovin’ the increases in sales, even for the artists who didn’t have Grammy performances.  I would say it’s radio support, but I don’t see Casey James on there and Lauren is…so maybe touring is mattering more?

Are you referring to singles or albums?

If you are referring to single sales numbers, then I think Brain could have gotten numbers for Casey. LDCIAN has been higher on itunes then IlYTB, if Brain can get numbers for ILYTB then he should surely be able to get numbers for LDCIAN as well.
I dont think touring helps that much for single sales. I dont know about Lauren (but I am sure she is doing lots of shows as I am sure Scotty also does a lot of shows) but Casey has practically been doing a show (radio promo) for every single day these past two weeks, often two shows a day, like yesterday, it just doesn’t get reported here.

It is just simple maths in my opinion of course there is always other factors also involved, but basically Scotty has an audience impression of over 17 million, Casey 7 million and Lauren 4 million, the chances of them right now selling on par with Scotty isn’t very likely at all. Other then that both Scotty and Lauren has lots of fans from idol. It has been two years since Casey has been on idol (and on a very unpopular season at that, most people didn’t even think he would crack the top 40 on country radio), he barely has any idol fans, he is much more like a normal new artist, if his radio AI goes up more people will hear the song more, and more people will buy the song (hopefully!!!).
The same would of course be true for Lauren and Scotty as well, but to a different degree, if Scotty makes the top 10 he would sell a lot more then he is doing right now, and if Lauren reaches the top 30 she would sell a lot more then she is selling right now.
Of course there are exceptions like Red Solo Cup that just keeps on selling, but that isn’t really the norm.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

Thanks–I enjoy discussions like this.  I certainly understand that Casey is fighting hard…just thought that he would be selling more singles than Lauren given their respective positions on the charts.  I understand his album isn’t out yet (and will check it out when the time comes).   Feel free to post about his shows–I’m interested in most things country…

LVD: I think Casey is definitively performing on the boat tomorrow. His whole new band are gearing up for a performance tomorrow it can only be for the boat. (Okay and they are also shooting more music videos today).

Good to know, thanks! And, CaseyJ was shooting Walmart Soundcheck performances today. I’m hoping he’ll also do like his labelmate Kellie and do some more acoustic performances of album songs that’ll debut online on different sites (like USA Today, Taste Of Country, and so on and so forth).

LVD: Casey already did a two hour guitar pull yesterday with Wade Bowen and Tyler Farr. Oh cool, do we know what he played? I’m with you, I don’t know if he’ll do Drive again but I’d kind of like it if he did with the way the song’s evolved.

LVD:I think they performed two songs last year on the boat, I hope it will be two songs again, LDCIAN and Drive together is a good combination.

I’m almost positive it was just Drive last year on the boat. But, hoping for 2 songs this year now that CaseyJ’s got a t30 song.

    http://www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat#/news/katy-perry-s-part-of-me-debuts-atop-hot-1006251352.story

#5 – Rolling in the Deep
    #6 – We Are Young
    #7 – Someone Like You
    #8 – We Found Love
    #9 – Starships
#10 – Turn Up the Music (ugh!)

With the gains, Adele makes history as the first female ever to
place three titles in the Hot 100′s top 10 concurrently as a lead
artist. Only one other woman had ever claimed a 30% share of the top
10: Ashanti, who charted a trio of tracks in the top tier the weeks
of March 30 and April 6 in 2002. She sported featured artist
billing, however, on two of those entries.

Despite falling from No. 1 to No. 4 on the Hot 100 after two weeks
in the driver’s seat (fairly literally, considering the song’s placement
in Toyota’s current Camry advertising campaign), “Stronger (What
Doesn’t Kill You)” nets the Hot 100′s top Airplay Gainer tag,
motoring 7-4 on Radio Songs (91 million, up 19%).
    The cut
decelerates 2-5 on Digital Songs (252,000, down 3%).

    From Billboard:

Adele’s ’21′ Earns Biggest Sales Gain In SoundScan History

Not counting albums that were released on an irregular schedule, or,
arrived early due to street-date violation sales, Adele’s “21″
achieves the largest weekly unit gain for an album since Nielsen
SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. It earned a staggering
493,000 gain last week — moving from 237,000 copies last week to
    730,000 this week.

With that 207% increase, it also easily spends a 21st week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

    Clearly,
Adele’s performance (and six wins) on the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards
spurred “21′s” massive sales increase. The annual broadcast can be
counted on for generating big bumps in sales, but Adele’s is the
    biggest.

    The previous largest SoundScan-era gain
for an album came on March 15, 2003, when Norah Jones’ “Come Away
With Me” jumped from No. 3 to No. 1, selling 621,000 (up from
144,000 the week previous). Coincidentally, Jones’ jump was caused
    by the Grammy Awards, too.

    Jones won three
of the top Grammy categories that year: album (“Come Away With Me”)
and record of the year (“Don’t Know Why”), in addition to best new
    artist.

Only three albums have seen a larger unit gain in a week than
“21,” but all were generated by irregular debuts or off-cycle
    releases.
    — Eminem’s “The Eminem Show”
jumped from 285,000 to 1,322,000 on June 8, 2002 in its first full
week on the chart — and second week at No. 1 (a gain of 1,037,000).
Its 285,000 debut at No. 1 was engineered by an early release, and,
at most, only three days of sales. After its first full week in
stores, it then incurred the massive jump in sales.

    — Pearl Jam’s “Vitalogy”
zoomed from 10,000 to 877,000 on the chart dated Dec. 24, 1994 —
its third week on the chart. The album was released on vinyl LP
first (debuting at No. 55 on Dec. 10 with 34,000) before falling to
No. 173 with 10,000 the next week. Once the CD was released, it flew
    to No. 1 with 877,000.

    — The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Life After Death”
went from 6,000 to 690,000 in its second week on the chart — April
12, 1997 (gain of 684,000). However, its bow at No. 176 with
6,000 was owed to early sales, pre-official street date, that forced
the title onto the list prematurely. The next week, after its first
official week in release, it jumped to No. 1.

One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”  sold 132K in debut week (#12 on Digital Songs Chart and #28 on BB HOT 100).

One Direction Has Highest Hot 100 Debut For New U.K. Act Since 1998

    by Keith Caulfield, L.A.  |

    February 22, 2012 5:55 EST

Vocal group One Direction makes waves on the Billboard Hot 100
singles chart this week as its “What Makes You Beautiful” debuts at
    No. 28. It’s the highest bow for a U.K. act’s debut U.S. single in
nearly 14 years. “Beautiful” sold 132,000
downloads in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, starting
at No. 12 on the Digital Songs chart.

    Formed
on the 2010 edition of the U.K.’s “X Factor” TV program, the male
quintet earns the highest new-Brit Hot 100 launch since the Verve’s
“Bittersweet Symphony” entered at No. 13 on the chart dated March
28, 1998. (While that wasn’t necessarily the Verve’s very first
single, it was their first Hot 100 entry.) To
be more exacting, the last U.K. act (solo or otherwise) to start
higher than One Direction with their true first U.S. single was
singer Jimmy Ray with “Are You Jimmy Ray?” on Feb. 21, 1998 (No. 26).

Finally, the last U.K. group to see its first U.S. single start higher was the Spice Girls,
when “Wannabe” landed at No. 11 on Jan. 25, 1997. “Wannabe” vaulted
to No. 1 four weeks later, spending four straight weeks at the
top of the tally. The success of “Beautiful” may
only be just beginning. It makes its retail launch even before One
Direction’s record label — Columbia — officially begins going for
airplay at pop radio next week. One Direction
comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and
Louis Tomlinson. All of the group hails from U.K., save for Horan,
who is from Ireland. The five young gents (ages 18-20) have nabbed
three top three U.K. singles and reached No. 2 with its debut album
“Up All Night” in November 2011. “Night” will be released in the
    U.S. on March 13 via SYCO/Columbia. Last
night (Feb. 21), the act won its first Brit Award (essentially the
U.K. equivalent of the U.S.’ Grammy) for best British single for
“What Makes You Beautiful.” (The category is one of three Brit
Awards determined by a public vote.) Next up for the group will be a U.S. tour with Big Time Rush
beginning Feb. 24 in Chicago, with dates lined up through March
9 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. They’ll also play
NBC’s “Today” show on March 12 — the day before “Up All Night” is
released. One Direction follows in the recent
success of fellow U.K. quintet the Wanted, who jump 25-23 on the Hot
100 this week with “Glad You Came.” So far, the single has moved
418,000 downloads. The song also rises 16-13 on the Pop Songs
    airplay tally this week.

I sure hope country radio thinks it (if it is indeed YMTLG) is radio friendly and actually play it.

It’s a surprising thing that TTWG got such a bad reception from country radio considerinjg the video now has over 5.5 million views and judging from the comments, the young people (female and male) particularly love it.  I know it has had lots of adds apart from Cumulus stations but have heard many complaints about the song not being played even tho it was added.

Makes you wonder how high it could have gone had it been well received by radio.    IMO, radio lost a good chance at bringing in lots of new (and/or young) listeners.

Pam, am I reading this right…Javier Colon only sold a total of 35,000 CDs in the 13 weeks it has been out?

     Yes.

Since we don’t yet have a numbers thread for today I’ll put this here.

Adam’s single is on the move on iTunes again. His song is now at 678. I wonder if the Queen concert talk is doing something? I don’t care why just glad it’s moving. Caveat (always feel like I have to say this so I’m not misconstrued) I’m not saying this is earth shattering just pointing out the numbers.

As of yesterday, there’s not only a postage stamp but a banner as well on iTunes for BTIKM.

Last night, Fox News at 10 PM had a brief segment about Adam’s upcoming performance with Queen at Sonisphere.  They also mentioned that they had performed together on AI and the EMAs.

I believe there were a couple of new spinners yesterday, an HAC in NYC and one in DC.

I have also seen tweets about a remix in the works.

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that I don’t think RCA is giving up yet on this song.  Sure I wish it was moving faster, but so far it’s hanging in there.
