Bottom line for the “my snowflake can’t get dropped” fans.  These artists are like the commodity market.  As long as you are making money, you have a job.  When you start to not make a profit and cost too much to keep, you get dumped.  Just like the stock market.  It’s happened to bigger stars that Lambert (i.e. Vince Gill, dropped after 30 plus years with a label).  No one is immune.

Well, I don’t think there was a song on Adam’s album that would work. I mean, IIHU struggled and it was definitely the most pop friendly song on the album left.

I don’t think there was anything strong left on Archie’s album either. When ALTNOY didn’t go anywhere, it was over.

I think there were some songs on Cook’s album that could do well on HAC radio, but at that point CBTM also only got played on HAC radio and barely went gold.

I think Kris had that other song from The Script that could do well. “The Truth” wasn’t great, but decent. Pat Monahan remix was pointless tho.
“Alright With Me” was just annoying.

Talking about singles in general, the first singles of the albums are the most important for every musician, a second good one- much better(maybe more important for new artists like idols and coming from a, not so loved lately by many in the industry, talent show), they should be strong because the singles are the artists’ business-cards of the new albums as well their persona. So many careers  have been built based on strong singles, the rest of the songs(from album) are good for tours/their fans, the singles themselves are the artists’ direct promotions, they go with them at different occasions, on radio, TV appearances, awards, as the “image” of the artists/albums. So many albums have been  mediocre with of the rest of the songs, but those songs have been used, or are mostly for tour reasons where other entertainment factors or artists’ charisma work well to get a good show.
This is why I’ve said lately in my posts(DC, Adam, Kris-RCA connection) that as a major label, if you’re really interested in the artist and want s/he developed, save some money to help getting strong sounds first, don’t waste/keep the resources for promo/roll-outs when you don’t have what to support. Help financially to really get a good song first, get a good strategist who knows what is new on market to help the signed-idols with ideas; they have the same A&R team(RCA) maybe for years to choose the idol-singles, not so many successful ones lately. The idols come with sophomore albums after 3 years, songs written maybe older than the album itself. No more label love for idols(if there was one). It might be a difference between the label-treatment/strategy they give to the chosen artists than the winners(or runner-ups) of AI as a contractual agreement between the label and AI-show.

Once again, vote totals, twitter followers, Youtube views – pretty meaningless

Yup. Those stats are mostly stans driven and inflated. Of course if you’re above the 100 mil views on youtube, you need more than your stans to pull it off. Although give them time, they will eventually find a way to do it lmao. :)

Colton has already said he is going to go the Christian route. Does UMG have a Christian label?

  • OffLeash

Lifehouse is with Geffen, but I don’t believe they consider themselves a Christian Rock band, so who knows.

Here are some #s about Usher, off of Wikipedia:

His 2nd album, My Way, has been certified 6x platinum & produced his 1st BB Hot 100 #1 single, “Nice & Slow”.

His 3rd album, 8701, has been certified 4x platinum & produced 2 BB Hot 100 #1 singles, “U Remind Me” & “U Got It Bad”

His 4th album, Confessions, has been certified 10x platinum & produced four consecutive BB Hot 100 #1 singles

His 5th album, Here I Stand, has been certified platinum & produced another BB Hot 100 #1 single, “Love In This Club”

His 6th album, Raymond vs. Raymond, has been certified platinum and had ANOTHER BB Hot 100 #1 single, “OMG”

His current album, Looking 4 Myself, debuted at #1 when it was released a couple of weeks ago, selling abt. 128K. It was his 4th album to debut at #1 on the BB Top 200 chart.

He has sold more than 23 million albums in the US & more than 65 million albums worldwide; He has NINE Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles, including at least 1 in 3 different decades (1990′s, 2000′s, 2010′s)

He has won 7 Grammy Awards, along with several other awards

Now — why are we comparing Adam to him?

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

It would make sense to compare Adam to other male pop/dance or pop/HAC types that came out roughly around the same time as him… so perhaps Jason Derulo, Mike Posner, Iyaz, Taio Cruz, Bruno Mars, etc. That gives folks a nice wide range. Those are Adam’s peers IMO.

  • Anonymous

well of those guys, Bruno is the only one who sells singles AND albums. Derulo is strictly a singles artist. Posner hasn’t had a hit other than “Cooler Than Me,” has he? And Iyaz? I haven’t heard his name in a long time, so I have no idea what he’s up to.

Adam, IMO, is not similar to any of those you mention.  He’s in a different category – all by himself.

*rolls eyes* so Jimmy hasn’t learnt his lesson the first time around? Granted Colton placed higher than Pia, is a better performer than her and has better taste in music but not everyone going to the tour is going there to see him, peeps don’t like having stuff shoved down their throats. Besides pimping Colton to the choir is not going do anything to help him in the real world.

I think “Free” might have been a miscalculation for Haley.  It was risky and gutsy and it might have worked.  But I think people heard the single and saw the album cover art and saw it was a retro/throwback project and people just aren’t interested in that right now.  If she had tapped into some sort of yearning for that era, and sometimes it happens, it could have been great, but the public is just not responding to that right now.  Next year, who knows, it might be the next craze, but right now, people aren’t in the mood

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Yeah, it’s a rough world out there for male pop stars these days, Bruno really seems to be the only one with any longevity. I don’t think Jason Derulo even did all that well with this last batch of songs, did he?

Sure, but it is hard to find perfect matches for anyone really, Idol or no Idol. In any case, these are all fairly recently introduced guys who are trying to become solo pop-based artists and also have been marketed overseas so it makes sense to look at them as a class IMO.

  • Anonymous

Does he? I thought I read that his deal with Decca was for one album only. And he is another of the many Idols whose album sales are poor right now.

OMG! I can’t BELIEVE Adam’s success (or lack thereof) is being compared to USHER!!!!!!! SMH

I’m even starting to worry about P2 and Jessica. The whole franchise looks to be in serious trouble. Just too many reality TV shows producing singers that people are going to lose interest in/radio won’t play. ;(

It’s not about the show, it’s about being new artists, and no new artist is going to be given a free pass.  Nothing has changed, there are a lot of idol alums who failed to build an audience, even some who sold a lot of albums, like Ruben Studdard.  Idol alums are facing the same issues that every other new artist is facing.  While they may have some advantages, unlike other artists they may not have the support of their labels, and they still have to compete against other artists, not just idol alums, for radio space.

Being on AI doesn’t mean that they have exposed a lot of people to Their music, that they are reaching their demo, or that a lot of people understand who they are as artists.

  • OffLeash

    Mind boggling, isn’t it? o0

Alas, while I like Reinhart’s album (at length, here, with pistachio cupcakes) and am glad it exists… yeah, I think it’s likely that the “judges are so mean to Haley” narrative set up by the show fueled some voting by people who enjoyed participating in an exciting TV experience but weren’t motivated to actively keep track of Reinhart afterwards (or kept track of her as a Twitter “personality” rather than to get news of fresh music immediately).

This experience applies to a lot of people from AI, and shows why it’s so important that they don’t drop off the face of the earth in the months after the season.  It’s also why they have to catch people’s attention with their music.

I always thought her fanbase was more vocal than actually large.

This would apply to everyone from AI too. In real world terms, everybody’s fanbase is more vocal than large.

Not only did Jordin’s last album not sell “much” but her lifetime earnings that I can see fall below Lamberts to date. With nothing in the future to look at. Granted I don’t have ALL her revenue though.

So why make the claim, if you can’t produce the numbers?  I don’t understand what her lifetime earnings have to do with where she’s at now.  Her last album didn’t do well, but if we are going to compare, right now If things don’t change, Adam is on pace to sell around 255,000 albums total.   That’s that’s not too much more than what Jordin sold with her second album, but at least she had a top ten hit that sold well.

I don’t see how Jordin’s numbers make Adam’s look good, instead I see history repeating in terms of the drop off in sophomore album sales.

Not true. Josh’s fanbase for instance was almost inexistent online, and yet he made it to #3. In his case, his fanbase was much less vocal for its actual size.

    I don’t.
