All this talk of potential metrics and slams on SuBo got me thinking about viral videos (I think some of SuBo’s success worldwide is due to her audition video going viral). I was wondering if we can add youtube views into our collection of stats used to try to decipher who is getting the views and who is not.

Here are the viewcounts a week later for MJ’s performance videos (and then the top viewed versions on youtube with minimal searching (and that searching could be search word dependent) – some Idols have more splintered viewing patterns though and you should probably add up the top 10 views or something):

Paul: Folsom Prison Blues: 2,504 (46,980 and 23,276)
Pia: River Deep, Mountain High: 1,860 (284,308 and 26,223)
    Scotty: That’s All Right Mama: 1,671 (94,758 and 51,766)
Haley: Piece of My Heart: 1,637 (96,978 and 93,506)
James: While My Guitar Gently Weeps: 1,520 (311,958 and 89,518)
Casey: Have You Ever Seen the Rain: 1,442 (132,476 and 61,720)
Jacob: Man in the Mirror: 1,212 (159,598 and 32,706)
    Stefano: When A Man Loves a Woman: 1,181 (45,751 and 24,440)
    Lauren: Natural Woman: 631 (79,774 and 8,723)

Is it a measure of how popular contestants are? The songs? Can we see a disconnect between who people at MJ watch and the general populace? Is anybody going viral? Does this mean nothing at all?

I do think that Pia’s numbers are inflated somewhat by her being in the news a lot this week so I don’t think we should take her view count as proof that she was much more popular than Nigel said.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that there is some correlation between youtube views and popularity, but it’s at a much coarser level than the differences between the views of the Idol videos. I mean, Bieber’s “Baby” video has surpassed 515,000,000 views, and videos of other major stars have over 100,000,000 views, so that’s some indication of popularity. I’m not sure that a difference as small as those that Kirsten has posted will necessarily correlate with votes or popularity, when there are over 20,000,000 people watching Idol every week.

    ETA:

(I think some of SuBo’s success worldwide is due to her audition video going viral).

I think that almost all of SuBo’s success can be attributed to her audition video going viral.

Another good week for Jennifer. She may see another boost from her DWTS appearance last night.

    Interesting discussion point.

I think their would be more validity if AI posted the performance videos & had their own channel on YT. I don’t quite know why they don’t, especially since we can no longer purchase the performances on iTunes. As far as whether it is something that can be tracked without an official channel, I find it a bit questionable. I do know that more popular contestants often have multiple videos of the same performance posted at once. I don’t know if you could capture all of the view counts.

Kirsten, very nifty video counts. If nothing else, it’s a much larger sample size than Twitter followers or iTunes reviews, so it’ll be all the more interesting to see which (if any) metrics correlate with what we know of results.

Speaking of which, it’s Twitter follower power list time! While the ranking on sheer follower count remains pretty consistent with prior weeks, the numbers for gains tell interesting stories.

    Follower counts
The one interesting thing here is that there are now decent-sized gaps from one person to the next, rather than clustering.

    McCreery, Scott 81,840
    Abrams, Casey 76,498
    McDonald, Paul 68,225
    Lauren Alaina 63,723
    Durbin, James 55,784
    Langone, Stefano 50,741
    Reinhart, Haley 40,563
    Lusk, Jacob 31,694

    Percentage gains
Do this week’s numbers seem a lot larger than last week’s? They should! Leaving aside Pia Toscano’s 159% increase (virtually all of it after her boot) to over 107,500 followers, we still see the average gain jump from 21% to 39%. All this kerfluffle has arguably increased interest in the show overall, as well as in specific singers.

    Reinhart, Haley 53.84%
    Langone, Stefano 41.19%
    Lauren Alaina 40.81%
    McDonald, Paul 39.65%
    McCreery, Scott 38.22%
    Durbin, James 35.13%
    Lusk, Jacob 34.78%
    Abrams, Casey 28.88%

    Raw number gains
The actual number of followers gained shows a different pattern than the percentages, as the difference in prior week’s base is by now striking.

    1. McCreery, Scott 22,632
    2. McDonald, Paul 19,371
    3. Lauren Alaina 18,467
    4. Abrams, Casey 17,143
    5T. Langone, Stefano 14,804
    5T. Durbin, James 14,502
    5T. Reinhart, Haley 14,196
    8. Lusk, Jacob 8,179

Sample size remains at best 2% of viewers.

What is going on with Crystal? Do any hard core fans know? Are they releasing another single and will she appear on Idol this year?

How long did she stay on the BB200- between 3 and 4 months?

Are they skewing her more country now or sticking with AAA formats? I did see she is in one country festival in Florida (looked like a nice one with Darius Rucker).

  • sma11ie

Posted this in the wrong thread earlier. I see Adele beat Britney this week. I read that Adele’s held the #1 position in the UK chart for 11 consecutive weeks– does that mean she beat Britney in the UK even on Britney’s debut week? Wow.

Thanks for the Youtube and Twitter count, guys. Interesting stuff!

It’s interesting that on the actual HAC add date for DYWS a few weeks ago, it didn’t really get any bites, yet it’s now picking up steam pretty organically. That bullet is healthy, and hopefully the appearance tomorrow on Idol will get the song more attention outside of Country. I think it’s poised to take off nicely on HAC now.

  • Eileen99

Thanks for the twitter follower information, btw. Funny how everybody benefited from the manufactured Pia uproar.

Yup, she did, and Radiohead too. In fact she sold 257,000 that week (sales increase due to Mothering Sunday, a British Mother’s Day), and has sold over 100,000 each week since its debut. Total sales so far – 1,868,795. She has the record for the most consecutive weeks on #1 for a female artist in the UK, although it looks like the next week she will be #2, beaten by Foo Fighters’ new album.

How long did she stay on the BB200- between 3 and 4 months?

Crystal’s album came out December 14th and was off the Billboard 200 last week. She was on the chart for 15 weeks.
