HDD is predicting a top 15 debut for Colton Dixon, but Christian artists are difficult to predict for since so many sales are made in Christian book stores outside of the SoundScan grid. Other artists we are watching in the top 50 should be One Direct (x2), Phil, Carrie and Kelly.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!

Colton’s numbers did hold! Very nice, congratulations.

Kelly’s ‘Catch My Breath’ has developed into solid HAC & AC hit, moderate hit on POP. I am assuming she will perform it in a medley with Stronger, so that should provide a bit of a sales kick hopefully to get it over a million sold in two weeks time.

Finally, as we know Brian gets his numbers from a Hot Tracks Chart that lists studio and live version of Home separately. As of last week ‘Home (live)’ has sold 10K total and was mowing 1K or less a week. So the grand total for Home should now be at ~3,899,000-3,900,000 sold.

    From the previous thread.

Taylor: Can you look at the alt. rock chart right now and tell us all the songs that are going to cross over and which ones will smash? I would love to know which ones are going to be big hits.

There has been a ton of new aaa/alt./active rock offerings lately since it’s the beginning of the year and a lot of acts are trying their hand in getting on newly formed play lists. I have listened to some of it, and though I have heard a lot of interesting compositions there was not anything quiet as mind blowing and undeniable like Somebody That I Used To Know, for example.

Plus, it might seem counterintuitive but I find that now that mainstream formats have significantly wormed up to alt.rock (at least lighter and poppier part of it) the prediction of crossover hits will be a lot harder because it will depend on a lot more factors then the stand-out quality of the song.
If in the 2011-early 2012 there could not be more then 2 alt. songs on the chart (and one of them has to be Adele) and the high profile aaa/alt.rock hits were at best scrapping the top 40 on POP, nowadays the format is comfortable with 2 alt. smashes at a time all the way in top 10 while pretty much every high profile pop-leaning alt./aaa chart topper has a free pass in to 30-20 range.

Among other things that means that if early on only exceptional compositions with high level of spin-to-sales and usually some king of additional means of getting exposure (in 2012 every alt.rock crossover smash besides STIUTK and now Thrift Shop has been used in commercial at some point) nowadays I think we can expect to see POP suddenly putting in high rotation alt. crossovers that do not necessary scream “smash” based on their sales numbers, simple because few latest alt. smashes has just peaked and format is actively searching for something in the same vain to stuff the playlists with and satisfy the demand for that sound. At the same time when there are a lot of equally strong songs attempting to make a leap to mainstream formats many will likely end up cockblocking each other, while some emerge mostly based on the fortunate timing.

Anyway, out of the art.rock acts that has not fully broke out into mainstream yet keep you eyes on Interscope’s Imagine Dragons. Their first crossover hit ‘It’s Time’ is #17 on POP and #8 on HAC, it has been around for a very long time and it’s sales are good, but not at that ultra high smash level that would warrant POP to carry it much further (unless, there is some additional incentive, or PD’s just feel the need to stuff their playlist with something alt-ish since Ho Hey is done).

Radioactive – their second single (and my favorite song from the album) is about to top Alternative chart and posts great sales numbers for ~10K AI that is gets, but on the rock to indy-pop scale it might be too close to rock for CHR to fully embrace, that is why I am guessing that Interscope is going to bank on their recently released to AAA 3d sing – Demons for future pop success.
If/when send to POP I am assuming Demons are going to at least match, but most likely surpass ‘It’s Time’ in terms of mainstream radioplay, so that’s your next crossover hit going on smash right there.

Looks like Blown Away will end up matching the sales of Play On in the end.

Yep, had my eye on Imagine Dragons since last fall. Looking at the impressive iTunes chart positions and the total sales numbers thus far for both their album and the debut single, it looks like tons of others have been on the early train to knowing a good thing when they first hear it.

It’s Time had the longest run on the Billboard Alternative Top 10 for 2012 with 32 weeks. The song was certified platinum back in November. I’ve had their album for months, along with a lot of others who like this type of music. The album has stayed in the top 10-15 on iTunes for months and It’s Time has hung around the top 20-30 for months. It was pretty clear that people were liking what they were hearing and word of mouth was keeping the album selling on a consistent basis.

Imagine Dragons and It’s Time and The Lumineers and Ho Hey have been obvious crossover bands and singles from the start. All the signs were there.

     1. Thing that that are obvious to you and me might not be for other posters on this blog, so I tried to give a more rounded answer.

    2. Most of crossover success stories are based on success within home genre with string of signs of growing interest obvious to those who pay attention. Any song or band that is about to become a hit will have it. So if you intend to dismiss my answers because you see the same signs that I do and there for they are obvious to you, then I do not understand the purpose of asking questions.

I agree, most songs that are crossover hits do have signs. The signs were pretty obvious for songs like STIUTK to almost anyone who followed current music. In fact, Gotye’s song had big red ship-sized signs blowing in the air! lol Songs like We Are Young had signs that it could be a big hit, but radio was pushing back on that one. Finally, they had to play it! Radio even pushed back for a long time on Some Nights. Now, it seems they have come around and are fully accepting Fun.

My original question was, if you have a 100% accuracy rate of picking crossover “smashes”, when and where did you do this? If you are using that as some kind of evidence at predicting how other songs will do, there should be some kind of track record of picking smashes, that a million other people didn’t see coming, out there somewhere. (before they went viral and were worldwide smashes everywhere else, before the Super Bowl, or before a alt. rock song had set a record for 2012) Those are the easy ones to predict and doin’t point to a sixth sense of picking smashes.

That’s why I was wondering if you could look at the Top 40 songs on the Alternative Chart and look at songs that are up and coming releases and tell us which ones will be smashes? If you have picked everyone of them, in the past two years, before everyone else knew they were hits, I would love to know which ones are going to be the next #1 hits on CHR! You have made that claim several times, so I was hoping for some predictions!

going to be the next #1 hits on CHR!

    LOL!
    Well that really easy.
I have not heard a CHR #1 amongst new alt.rock  releases.

You do remember that only Rolling in the Deep, Set Fire to the Rain, Somebody I Used to Know & We Are Young had managed that feat?)

As for when. When I first heard them, usually around adds date on Alternative, or when the song pops out on i-tunes, or someone made a recommendation, or heard it in tv commercial, obviously before POP jumps on board.

Where? In discussions with my real life friends and online acquaintances. I hope you do not expect of me to browse the web for conformations. I certainly do not feel obliged to prove anything to you.

Hot 100: Phillip is out of top 10, Kelly in top 20. + Top 40 hit for Blake.

Phillip Phillips’ “Home” drops from #9 to #15, ending a 13-week run in the top 10.
Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath” jumps from #22 to #19 in its 15th week…

Maroon 5’s “Daylight” jumps from #17 to #14 in its ninth week. Digital sales rank: #10 (95K)…

“YOLO” by the Lonely Island featuring Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar is the week’s second highest new entry at #60. The song was first heard on the Jan. 26 episode of Saturday Night Live,
on which Levine was host and Lamar was musical guest. This is vying to
become the Lonely Island’s second top 40 hit. “I Just Had Sex”
(featuring Akon) reached #30 in January 2011. “YOLO”
(the acronym stands for You Only Live Once) is from the Lonely Island’s
    upcoming third album.

Blake Shelton’s “Sure Be Cool If You Did” jumps from #48 to #39 in its fourth week…

“Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera jumps from #99 to #76 in its second week. The song samples a-ha’s 1985 smash “Take On Me.”…
The Glee version of Ne-Yo’s former top 10 hit “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)” debuts at #91.

Which songs, that just went for adds on Alternative in the past few weeks or that have just popped up on iTunes, are going to be smashes? What constitutes a crossover smash for you? Everyone has different definitions of what a smash is. What’s your definition?
You don’t have to prove anything, but if you are able to predict with 100% accuracy all the Alternative crossover smashes, you should be able to predict which ones will be coming up in the next couple of months.
