Idol Sales News – Week Ending 01/27/12

HDD is predicting top 50 album sales for American Idol winners Phil, Carrie and Kelly plus X-Factorers One Direction times two. HDD should give us a prediction for Season 11′s Colton Dixon who released an album this week. Christian artists are a little hard to predict because they tend to sell a lot of product through Christian bookstores who are not part of the SoundScan system. Over the weeks, you will see the album totals not make any sense because even SS will estimate the sales for each week, but the running totals will be the actually reported sales.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post the numbers as they become available.

Idol Chatter numbers:

Christian artists are a little hard to predict because they tend to sell a lot of product through Christian bookstores who are not part of the SoundScan system.

Actually, that’s changed, which has something to do with why we see CCM artists in the top 5 of the BB 200 these days. There’s a Christian music trade group that organized “Christian Soundscan,” which collects the data for Nielsen Soundscan so that Christian bookstore sales are included in BB charts.

Here’s an interview with John Styll of the Gospel Music Association that tells the story (go down to the paragraph that starts “It happens on a number of levels”):

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

Most Christian music retailers do report to Soundscan but they are not represented in the sample of retailers that HDD and Nielsen use for their forecasts so the predictions are often off. Christian Soundscan has really improved the reporting rate so Soundscan numbers for Christian music sales are now much more accurate.

Sina Entertainment (China) has an interview with Adam on it main page where Adam says that Trespassing will be released in Mainland China. China is a major market but only #22 in music sales, mostly digital sales. I believe Adam is the first American Idol to have an album released in China. He will be the first to do a concert in China when he goes to Shanghai. Album release is expected to be timed for the concert date. 3-Mar-13.

Country singer Gary Allan notches his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as “Set You Free,” his ninth studio album, debuts atop the list with 106,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Allan’s new album is one of two debuts in the top 10 this week. It’s joined by the “2013 Grammy Nominees” compilation, which bows at No. 4 with 41,000 sold.

Maroon 5′s latest single “Daylight” rises 13-9 (104,000; up 20%) and Phillip Phillips’ “Home” slides 8-10 (104,000; down 20%).

    Home’s total now is 3,832,000.

Happy for Gary Allan!!  Have been a long time fan…

  • jpfan2

So 168K to 4xplat. Home has def peaked on iTunes and won’t be back in the top 10 again. It was there forever so no tears for this song.

I think 2-3 weeks seems about right. Although it would be more fun if they played it on Idol tonight and we could speed up the big milestone for the song.
Home has been super fun to follow. Now I’m biting my nails about GGG. I’ll settle for it doing 25% as good as Home has done.

Yayayayayayayayay!!!! for Gary Allan! I’m thrilled with a 1st week total that’s confirmed to be over 106k. Was tweeting with a poster here yesterday and she pointed out that 1 of the cool things about this is Gary Allan pulled this off without being one of the industry’s chosen people. He just cowrote the right song, and it clicked. I know I’ve been ragging on Blake a lot (A LOT) lately but riddle me this: Blake with a 4 week #1 country song and all the hype, promo, and name recogntion from The Voice, sells 116k in July 2011. Gary Allan gets a #1 song and limited TV promo (he was on the Tonight Show) and sells 106k during the January doldrums. That’s obviously not the whole story because we’ll have to see what kind of legs Gary’s album has. I think he’s got a bunch of strong single choices so I hope radio’s on board for the whole era. He obviously won’t get the level of TV exposure Blake gets. It’ll be interesting to see whether the industry gets behind Gary and nominates him for awards.

The most fun success stories are the ones that simmer quietly then go big, and I’d say Gary’s is one of those.

On topic: Nice to say P2′s Home still selling in the 6 figures weekly!

  • jpfan2

How weird. HDD had M&S selling about 27K or so but the BB number is much higher:

“As for the rest of the top 10: The soundtrack to “Pitch Perfect” holds at No. 3 (44,000; down 1%), “Kidz Bop 23″ falls three to No. 5 (40,000; down 50%) and Mumford & Sons’ “Babel” rises 9-6 (38,000; up 51%). … The “Les Miserables” soundtrack rounds out the top 10, down four to No. 10 (27,000; down 29%).”

I’ve never known HDD to be so off on an album.

I dunno, I like Gone Gone Gone. I think it could end up in the 1.5-2mil range. I guess we’ll see soon enough. But yeah, I’d take platinum too. :)

And since Home has finally fallen out of top 10 on i-tunes in all likelihood for good (with influx of Justin Bieber’s acoustic songs it’s down to #18),

Huh? The Beebs only has two songs from his new album in the top 20. That’s not what knocked Home out of the top 10. Home is currently at #19, other songs with more airplay are moving up the chart.

In other iTunes chart news: Colton’s album is still in the top 5. Pitch Perfect is an album that falls under the category of a surprise success. Who would have guessed that it would hang on this long? It’s good to see The Lumineers and Imagine Dragons still hanging in there in the top 10 on iTunes.

  • LongKissGoodnight

Huh? The Beebs only has two songs from his new album in the top 20. That’s not what knocked Home out of the top 10.

    That’s not what I’ve said.
There are 3 songs that I am assuming are going to be temporary visitors: 2 Bieber acoustic & Lonely Island (ft Adam Levine) the last one in fact was what bumped Home out of top 10 (which I have methioned in the last numbers thread).

Anyway, Home is doing exactly what was expected of it under the circumstances, as pretty much every other smash that gets bumped out of top 10 after prolonged stay it had fallen down to ~20th positions.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

You said “with influx of Justin Bieber’s acoustic songs, it is down to #18″.
I expected to see a Taylor Swft type invasion on the iTunes chart (7 or 8 songs in the top 20) from that description. Bieber has one acoustic remake of a hit and one brand new song in the top 20. The “influx of Justin Bieber’s acoustic songs” is not what knocked Home out of the top 10 or down to #19.

    Hot 100:

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis spend a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their debut entry “Thrift Shop,” featuring Wanz.
“Thrift” tops the Hot Digital Songs chart for a third frame with 357,000 downloads sold (up 5%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It passes 2 million (2.3 million) in digital sales to date.

The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” stays at its No. 3 peak to-date on the Hot 100 in its 34th week, while leading the Hot Rock Songs chart for an 11th week. The folk/rock track pushes past 3 million sold since its release.

After climbing to No. 2 four weeks ago, Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.” rebounds 5-4 on the Hot 100. It is No. 1 Mainstream Top 40 title for a second week, and crosses 3 million downloads to date.

Phillip Phillips’ No. 6 hit “Home” rebounds 10-9.

Considering GGG isn’t even getting much radio play yet, it’s way to early to predict that it will go platinum. It isn’t selling much at the moments (in the 400′s on iTunes), so shouldn’t we wait and see if radio responds to it? Second singles generally (although not always) sell significantly less than first singles.

This is actually around what I was expecting. That is similar to what Hailey sold her first week. And (A) Colton finished lower on his season than she did on hers; (B) he’s on a niche label; and (C) he is a CCM artist — they do not generally sell a lot of albums unless they are huge stars (Chris Tomlin, TobyMac, etc).

what I want to know is why Bieber keeps selling hundreds of thousands of albums when he is basically just repackaging and remaking the same songs over and over

17-20k only for Colton really, this is depressing

Context: Most CCM albums miss the BB 200 entirely or end up in the very bottom reaches, even with solid radio play. It is a very, very small genre. The acts that land in the top 5 of the BB 200 are highly unusual.

Context: If Q3 is correct that Christian bookstore sales aren’t included in the early estimates, then this 17-20k number is basically a work of fiction and doesn’t indicate much one way or the other.

If the issue is “where’d the Idol fanbase go?”… same place as Haley Reinhart’s. They wander off, and if there isn’t strong mainstream radio play to remind them of their favorites, they don’t show up to buy.

In Dixon’s case, Sparrow chose, as a deliberate strategy, to position his music in CCM and not aim for crossover to mainstream formats. That move essentially waves bye-bye to a substantial portion of Idol fans who thought he was kinda cute and clever with the alt-rock but who will never, ever listen to Christian radio or seek out a “Christian” album.

This looks like a strategic effort to build a really solid base for his career among actual CCM listeners and buyers (including having his first radio single be worship music, to get him a foothold in church music use, which is a meaningful contributor to CCM careers) — and not to be whipsawed by the lure of “well, if we put more focus on mainstream, we could get a short-term cash boost through whompus sales for the debut album.”

Obviously, the strategy will look a lot smarter if/when it works. But I wouldn’t expect Dixon’s sales performance to be anything like what we see even from Idol 4th-place finishers. CCM is just too specialized.

Well, there are three new songs on the album and I guess they took the rap parts out and made the songs acoustic. IDK? lol
Bieber did have a hand in writing the majority of his songs and was one of the producers for his Believe album and was the producer for all of the songs on the acoustic version. He is involved in the writing and producing process and they are finding ways to make more money from a worldwide fanbase that supports him like crazy.

One thing is for sure, with his third top 5 single off of his current platinum album, he isn’t the “little kid” that is going to fizzle out anytime soon. It looks like JB kept a large percentage of his young fans. They are hanging on as they get older and younger ones are jumping on for the ride.

Also the album was released in the worst month of the year when everyone’s broke after Xmas. I’d say with all things considered those are pretty solid opening numbers.

I don’t really think Colton’s numbers are depressing at all for the niche market he’s in right now.

  • girlygirltoo

    That too :)

These are not bad first week #s for Colton.

I think that it’s impressive, when we consider his genre, and that he’s almost a year removed from being on AI.  I was expecting a lot less, and that prediction might come true, since HDD’s numbers are based on figures from just the first day, and AI fans love to buy an album the second that it comes out.  Colton has to make his mark in his genre, like Mandisa did, in order to put up bigger numbers, but even then, those numbers won’t be as high as those of some mainstream artists.

“Home” are two versions on iTunes, Brian sees only one of them.

  • LongKissGoodnight

I have no idea why Brian and Billboard have different totals for Home’s sales this week. It’s not just a rounding difference either. Oh well.

Brian uses Hot Digital Tracks chart, that lists different versions of the song (original “explicit” or “clean”, live, remixed) separately, while Billboard numbers are from Digital Songs chart, that combines their sales all together for a summarized figure.

So what Brian posts is sales for studio recording of Home, and the difference with Billboard figure is sales for bonus track ‘Home (live)’.

  • jpfan2

Thanks for the explanation. It’s a shame that Brian has less access to Pop numbers than country/gospel music. Colton did better than I expected as well.

  • LongKissGoodnight

Btw, after unswerving  jpfan2 question I have noticed one peculiar thing.
Philip’s album is out for 10 weeks now. And during first 9 weeks live version of Home has sold 9,000 copies.
But during last week (21 to 27th of January) it had sold 8,000 copies (that’s an 800% increase from 1k the week prier). Almost the same amount as previous 9 weeks combined!

Idol return was January 16, and by the time the week in question rolled in the boost it had provided was almost gone. So the only explanation to this phenomenon I can come up with, is the fact that Phillip had his first bunch of college concerts at that time.

    Could that be the cause?

It can’t be right.  You should see this reflected in iTunes if this is true (my guess is that it would be ~#200-300 on iTunes if it is sellin 8K).

  • jpfan2

Although Brian can’t get the numbers I’ll guess GGG sold between 5K and 8K this week (based on the iTunes position of two of Carrie’s songs). I don’t see the live version of Home on the iTunes listing so I’m not sure how much it’s selling.

From Yahoo Chart Watch - http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-jan-27-2013-songs-another-f-233455441.html

Phillips’ “Home” rebounds from #10 to #9 in its 31st week on the chart. The song has climbed as high as #6. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (97K)

Can’t be 104K and 97K at the same time, one of them must be wrong.

Can’t be 104K and 97K at the same time, one of them must be wrong. (I’m
guessing the 104K number is wrong since Idol chatter give 96K,
    therefore 1K for other versions).

That does make sense (and looks more believable given it’s i-tunes performance), thank you.
And shame on me for trusting Billboard’s own article, apparently. LOL

So actual total for Home is 3,825,000.

I was expecting Colton to sell much less than that. These are good numbers for him plus he’s going on tour so this is a great start to his career.

  • http://MJO judes

I am so pleased . Colton’s album is available here n Australia -so I am glad he is on CCM label. Many idol artists haven’t been available here & if this has made his music more accessible elsewhere then kudos to him & his team.
