Woo! The new season of Idol starts tonight!

Hits are predicting that 1D remains in the top 10 with “Take Me Home” while Phil and Kelly are in the top 20. 1D’s “Up All Night” and Carrie Underwoods “Blown Away” are predicted to be in the top 40. Phil’s “Home” will likely be in the top 10 downloads of the week.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!

GGG is currently #550 on iTunes.

  • girlygirltoo

In yesterday’s sales thread, there’s a post on iTunes ranks, and GGG was at #576. So it hasn’t gotten much of a boost yet. Of course, Ellen probably hasn’t aired on too many stations yet today, since it’s still early in the morning. I think her show airs in the afternoon in a lot of markets (I think it airs at 4 pm here in L.A.). So maybe keep an eye on the iTunes ranks to see where GGG around 8 p.m. Eastern time today — that will give us an idea of whether this performance gives GGG a bump or not.

P2 clearly needs back-up singers for GGG. His musicians aren’t good singers and the song loses a lit bit of its mojo without the chorus.

    Numbers are in.

    Chris Tomlin is # 1 with 73,000.

Closing out the top 10 is One Direction’s “Take Me Home,” which slips five rungs with 29,000 (down 52%).

Phillip Phillips’ “Home” slips 5-7 (122,000; down 38%).
    Total: 3,606,000.

Home still remains #9 on i-tunes. Pretty mindblowing.

  • jpfan2

GGG is just not the grabber Home is. And I agree it could use some background singers.  We’ll see if the Ellen appearance gives it even a modest boost.

So “Home” is about 400K behind Kelly’s single, “Stronger” for the best-selling single ever by an Idol. That’s still a pretty big gap.

  • fuzzywuzzy

#433 now. At this rank, it doesn’t take many downloads to make a big jump in ranking.

  • justmefornow

I agree about his musicians, really bad backup singers. That being said, I wish him well with GGG. I personally don’t seeing it becoming some great hit like “Home” unless it gets picked up and used with some kind of tie-in.
Can lightning strike twice? P2 has so far been the luckiest Idol I’ve ever seen so who knows.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Can lightning strike twice? P2 has so far been the luckiest Idol I’ve ever seen so who knows.”

    No argument there.

Not when you’re selling 100K plus downloads a week. And that’s BEFORE the performance on Idol tonight. I love Kelly but I think Home is going to outsell Stronger in 4-6 weeks.

  • windmills

Kelly’s What Doesn’t Kill You has a Grammy bounce coming but I agree P2′s Home will surpass its download sales, probably within the next 2 months.

“Home” has exceeded the “No air”, then I refuse to see. LOL

  • girlygirltoo

Don’t you think that the people who tune into Idol have already heard “Home” a zillion times? And have probably bought it already? I would be surprised if it gets more than a minor bump from tonight. It would be different if the song wasn’t 6 months old and wasn’t all over the radio and tv already.

  • Anny_nanny

And I think musicians sounded chaos, with a children’s choir was the ideal performance (and the children of the wonderful singing).
But I don’t like this song, to me anyway, to be honest.

  • jpfan2

Who were the 120K people who bought the song last week?  It’s been around for months and I’m sick of it myself. So yes I think it will sell another 400K.

No, I dont believe every person turning into AI tonight heard Home already and bought it.  It’s like the people who keep saying every week “hasnt EVERYONE bought Adele’s album already”? The world is a big place and with new judges on tonight there might be some new audience.

I get Ellen at 3pm, not everyone gets it in the morning.

I doubt that everyone who will be watching tonight has purchased Home.  I think if things worked this way, songs would stop selling after just a few weeks.  There will be viewers who haven’t followed Home’s progress, and who will be moved by the way that it is used tonight.

Awe, poor Kelly never gets to have anything for long  :(  She’ll always be the American Idol Originale though.  And probably keep her worldwide sales above the rest.

She’ll never be the most decorated or domestic sales queen though…but that’s alright.  She’s still thee BEST to me!

Was it about a year or so ago when a blogger/writer wrote about her being that one always in “middle”?  Something like that.

Yeah, poor Kelly with all her multi-platinum albums and singles. Poor thing, having to go to another Grammy awards show and having to sing at the presidential inaugaration. lol

Stronger was top 10 in several countries and has been certified platinum and gold in many of those countries. I wonder how many total downloads of Stronger have been sold?

    199. Phillip Phillips – Gone, Gone, Gone

  • jpfan2

Now if it breaks into the top 100 that would even be MORE amazing.
(It looks like it will in Canada. )

  • girlygirltoo

That’s a nice bump for GGG. And “Ellen” still hasn’t aired in every market yet today, so it will probably continue to cimb.

  • LongKissGoodnight

What people have to remember is that i-tunes is a rolling chart, so you should not expect to see the effect right away. It takes around a day, day and a half for the song to climb to it’s peak position based on one time exposure, like televised performance. Just remember the chart performance of covers from the Voice.
I stand by my assertion that Gone 3x has a lot of potential as commercial single and from what I have seen so far, so very good…

TWFTSOTM has moved up to #20 on ITunes. There is still Jimmy Kimmel tonight as well as the big Season 12 premiere.

  • jpfan2

They only showed a few minutes of Home and no GGG at all. Still it got a good bump from Ellen and maybe Kimmel will help it break into the top 100 songs on iTunes.

  • girlygirltoo

GGG is at #127 on iTunes right now (Home is at #8). The Kimmel appearance should help bump GGG into the Top 100.

    From Chart Watch

As American Idol begins its new season, Season 11 champ Phillip Phillips continues to move up the ranks of all-time Idol contestants.
Phillips’ smash “Home” (which drops from #6 to #9 on Hot100 this week) has sold
3,606,000 copies, which puts it in third place among all songs released
by Idol contestants. It trails only Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” (4,053,000) and Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” (3,682,000). “Home” is still selling briskly (122K this week alone, digital sales rank: #7), so it will probably soon be the Idol leader.
It is Home’s 29th week on the chart. This is its 11th week in the top 10.

  • jpfan2

It’s #118 now (I wonder if it can break into the top 100). Even if it doesn’t I think the song got a good response from the Ellen/Kimmel audience.
