An Idol news roundup for y’all!

Daughtry’s sophomore album, Leave this Town comes out July 14, and if you’re the type who must have every track available, by my calculations,   you’ll need to purchase 4 different versions of the album. Check out the complete track lists of all versions at DaughtryOfficial.com

Update:   According to the DaughtryOfficial mods, four of the bonus tracks will be available for sale as individual downloads when the album drops on July 14.   That leaves the iTunes pre-order as the only track unavailabe as a single.

Jesse McCartney just revealed an interesting tidbit in a radio interview, “Jive Records just reached out to me last week and they want me to write for David Archuletaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new album.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Archie is currently working on two albums, a pop record, and a Christmas album.   By the way, if you want tickets to David’s June 29 Atlanta concert with Demi Lovato, they’ve been discounted to $14.99…

Season 6 runner up, Blake Lewis just twittered that he’s finally got his website back–I’m assuming from his ex-label 19R/Sony. You can sign up for his mailing list at BlakeLewisOfficial.com. His new album on Tommy Boy Records, Heartbreak on Vinyl drops later this year.

Blake’s season 6 Idol-mate, Chris Richardson twittered his trip to Nashville last week for some songwriting sessions. He finished 3 songs, including a tune called “Lost and Found” and attended the CMT Video Music Awards. He’s back in Virginia, working on more songs

Season 7 Idol, Brooke White has a new single, “Radio Radio” and a new website–check it out. Her album High Hopes and Heart Break comes out July 21.

Season 2 Idol, Kimberley Locke is the new co-host of the talent competition show Gospel Dream, now in its 4th season on the Gospel Channel. The new season premiers June 24 at 10 pm.

Top 36 contestant from Season 8, Alex Wagner-Trugman, had an unfortunate mishap on the basketball court yesterday. At first, he thought he broke his ankle, but after an MRI today, Alex twittered, “sprain, legament damage and tears. But not as bad as it could be! Crutches and brace for bit then physical therapy.” Alex twittered a pic from the hospital here, and this “The worst part is that through all this pain, I have no boundaries stuck in my head… Why?!” Hee.

Jason Castro recorded a duet with Serena Ryder yesterday, I’m assuming for his album. I don’t know any details besides that. Yet more information thanks to the world of twitter.

Has Jesse McCartney written anything notable without Ryan Tedder? … or is this just another way of saying, They’re lining up Ryan Tedder to write for DA’s next album. I kind of cringe at the thought of Jesse McCartney all on his own writing songs for David, although all Tedder’s songs are beginning to sound alike to me these days.

  • suebrody

Good luck to Blake. I like him a lot, and hope this album is more successful. (I know a lot critics liked it, but I didn’t, so I didn’t download it; it didn’t seem authentic, but I bet this one is truer to Blake’s beat boxing/electronica sound.)

And good luck to Archie if Jesse will be writing songs for him.

There a bunch of CUTE videos up on Youtube from the LA times. here’s the one of Adam interviewing Kris but from that you can find all the different ones with them interviewing each other. The Kris-Adam and Kris-Allison are the cutest and funniest but that’s because I’m biases. There’s also Matt-Anoop which was funny too and Lil-Megan which was kinda boring.. hehe. I guess they’re just missing Danny, Sarver, and Scott?

Gokey, Sarver, and Scott are missing? Gee, I’m heartbroken.

His (Blake’s) new album on Tommy Boy Records, Heartbreak on Vinyl drops later this year.

Ok, some past (non-winning or runner-up) Idol must release an album this calendar year without the word “Heart” or “Heartbreak” in the title of the album or a track. I insist.

Sheesh, it’s now Brooke, Johns, Blake. Anyone else?

I’m loving Carly and her new gig more and more, every day. Bury Me Alive, FTW. :-)

  • BootStar

Oh, you had to rub it in with those discounted Archuleta tix, didn’t you, mj? ;-)

They discounted them in Philly, too. The Mann Music Center sent me an email offering them to me for $19.99 after I’d already paid $53.50 per ticket (total for two tickets with all the excess fees: $128.50) a month earlier.

    Love Alex Wagner-Trugman!

  • carolinacharms

Actually, they’re Demi Lovato tickets. David is just the opener. No, David actually sells out his gigs. The recent Del Mar, San Diego, fairgrounds were absolutely packed. The full capacity there is about 8K. David also sold out 22/23 solo gigs in the US, although granted the max venue capacity avg was around 1500-2000. Additionally, David sold out to the tune of around 5500 peeps in Salt Lake. Asia tour dates were sold to capacity, as well, including some 6K in Singapore. Oh, yeah, and then there’s the Cook-Archuleta extravaganza in the Philippines which drew an astonishing 50K-115K. And I don’t think David could be credited for anything less than 50 percent of that total based on the insane media and fan reaction to him there in the weeks and months prior to the show.

  • babybelle32

Demi could probably sell out an arena that only holds 8,000. The problem is that neither she nor David can sell out an arena that holds around 20,000, and why should they since they are new artists who aren’t well known. It made no sense to book them into these large arenas.

  • Truthiness

These are sooooo cute! Who cares about Demogate, when there is Kradison FTMFW! And is Adam the one holding the camera for the Allison/Kris one? It sounds like a bit of his laugh at one part. ADORE-able.

Geez! That’s crazy! Are they really THAT desperate?! No one is going to do that unless they’re a psycho-obsessed fan. I bought both the Walmart and I-Tunes versions of Cook and Archie’s, but buying 4 versions is bordering on completely insane! I hate record labels that pull shit like this. Daughtry’s well established now that they don’t need to resort to this crap to sell records.

The mods at daughtryofficial.com just added a clarification — the bonus tracks will be available as single purchases online so it’s won’t be necessary to purchase multiple versions of the CD to get very track. The only real “extra” is a track that comes with an itune preorder. Oh, and the CD comes out July 14, not July 21.

They are only using part of the arena as ‘large theatre’ shows. Being as alot of places they have smaller venues and then jump to arenas. Most of the shows are half arenas and the upper levels arent for sale either. Mainly the floor and lower bowl area.

They are only using part of the arena as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹large theatreà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ shows.

I understand the partial use of an arena, but I am sure the initial thought process was to get a “large” venue so that there would be available seating when the sales were brisk. Big mistake…..Kelly Clarkson had to cancel a whole tour when this type of thinking superceeded common sense. Most areas have a nice 4,000 seat theater….no reason to rent an 18,000 seat arena. Especially in this economy…unless your Taylor and Kellie P. who have pretty much “sold out” everywhere (but then they are playing in areas where “country” music reigns.)

I don’t know much about McCartney’s writing except that he wrote “bleeding Love”. Did he write that alone or with Tedder?

David IS writing his own music as well, but I am sure they are looking for good songs no matter who writes them, and David is so busy, his time is probably limited.

Perez Hilton Sues Black Eyed Peas Manager

Last night on everyone’s favorite show (jk), “the Oreilly factor”, he had two lawyer ladies (Lis Wiehl and Megyn Kelly) talking about it. I wasn’t paying close attention but I thought they said it was a civil suit and they both seemed to feel he had very little chance of winning with a jury because he wouldn’t get much sympathy because of how nasty he is.

Actually, theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re Demi Lovato tickets. David is just the opener. No, David actually sells out his gigs.

Look, all I know is that we’re going primarily to see Archuleta, ergo my reference to the “Archuleta tix.” The Mann has 7,200 seats, and there are still plenty of tix for sale. Based on that earlier review out of Wilkes Barre (?), David will be performing for an hour, so I would think peeps who love him would get themselves to the show, even if they don’t care for Demi. Personally, I don’t care one way or the other. Full house or not, I already paid for my tix, which was my only point, not that the show wasn’t sold out.

And FWIW, I paid $30 to see Cook perform in York back in April, and even though he was the headliner, he only performed for an hour, so love or hate Demi, $14.99 or $19.99 is a bargain if you love the Archster.

  • lavender1960

I hear ya weareallinnocent say you aren’t a fan of Our Lady Peace by any chance…….

like what is with all the heart titles – can we pick another body part at least…..

not desperate Sunshine Girl but very clever, INXS did the same thing and a whole bunch of people bought all 4 versions for the bonus tracks, I waited, they said all the bonus tracks would be available on all the download sites in a few months but I also have different versions of INXS’s Greatest Hits album because they did different versions for different countries which included new bonus tracks you could not get anywhere else and a few demos as well, yes fans get excited about demos….

  • Suzanne

Just read that the Louisville KY and Portland OR concerts w/ Demi Lovato and DA have been cancelled due to “scheduling conflict.” Probably for poor sales?

So frustrating. You put David Archuleta into Ticketmaster.com and get Demi Lovato. Looks like just a screwup.

Re: Jesse McCartney–He’s a singer himself. I know that singers write for other people, but it seems weird.

I really hope that David has WAY fewer songs about love and more songs about other life things–struggle, confidence, etc. The Climb is a huge hit. People crave the insight. I’d love to hear David sing a song with a similar message to Christina Aguilara’s “Beautiful” (but guy’ed up). And there should be a restriction on the number of tracks that can have hand claps to keep the beat.

That tour is probably hurting more from the fact the Jonas Brothers are touring at the same time. LOL. If you are a parent and you give your screaming teenage girl a choice of which expensive ticket you’ll buy… the cute boys or the not-quite-Miley girl… who do you think will get chosen more often? LOL. Yep, the 3 cute boys will win every time. All Demi can offer is Archie, and there’s only 1 of him. :laugh_tb:

I am actually really curious to hear Blake’s stuff.

    Perez needs to GTFOH already.

    Alex is my boy! LOL!

  • lavender1960

What would the Cook fans say is the average size crowd over his whole tour excluding festivals and that Red White and Boom concert which had 50,000 peeps.

Daughtry started out opening for 2 major acts but then again Daughtry was not the Idol winner.

I wonder myself are you better off headlining for a major act first time out or better to go on a small venue tour by yourself. Especially if the major act really meshes with your own music, you might just steal a lot of those 20,000 fans a night. Well share them anyway.

I am sure Daughtry picked up a massive amount of Nickelback and Bon Jovi fans. Heck I went to see Nickelback to see Daughtry and realized Nickelback is actually entertaining overall and the drummer is real cute. Throwing the beer out into the crowd in plastic cups though was confusing and so wasteful.

I think a lot of acts though are trending towards smaller than larger because the economy is hurting concert ticket sales. Looks better to have smaller venues sold out.

I was just at a music site where an online poll asked if you are buying the same amount of concert tickets, more or less and 73 per cent of people said they were buying less – granted internet polls are unscientific.

  • Kris

Bootstar, I don’t care for Demi and I am going. That isn’t the case for everyone. I’ve seen a lot of people saying they aren’t going to this tour because they don’t want to see David open up for Demi. If David was co-headling then that might be a different story. Right now he is performing 11 songs and she is performing like 20. Not to mention that Disney has promoted this as Demi’s tour and a lot of places have made no mention of David. Plus, like someone already said on Ticketmaster David is not listed. Unless you are a huge fan who goes on the internet you might not know that David is touring.

  • Suzanne

If David was co-headling then that might be a different story.

I know. It’s such an insane business mistake.

I am a fan of OLP, but I have to admit that Cook introduced me to them when he sang… you guessed it… “We Are All Innocent.” :-)

And yeah, I’ll take a Timberlake type D**k in a Box over Heart on my Sleeve, Hold Back My Heart, Heartbreak on Vinyl, and High Hopes and Heartbreaks, etc, ANY (and EVERY) day! LOL

    ETA:

Daughtry started out opening for 2 major acts but then again Daughtry was not the Idol winner.

IIRC, Daughtry actually did a small venue tour first as well. I think the idea is to try to put out there to those who care about such things that you’re willing to pay your dues and organically grow your fanbase at least to a certain extent. Just my guess…

  • lavender1960

11 Songs is quite a lot of songs for an opener though I will say. Most opening acts do around 5 – 7 songs tops so it is almost like he is co-headlining.

Maroon 5 and Counting Crowes were actually coheadlining a tour last summer – very weird – apparently they would trade off who opened and who closed and like wow, the Counting Crowes crowd is not anything like the Maroon 5 crowd. Mismatched set I would say.

  • lavender1960

I think all the ladies and some men would prefer a D**k in a box, bwah.

David Cook, a great ambassador for the Canadian music industry. Thanks, eh!

He better haul his butt and his band up here this summer – we were hoping he might tour with OLP this summer but I haven’t heard anything, pout.

I didn’t realize Daughtry did a small venue tour before Nickelback – though it always makes sense to work the kinks out of the band as well in smaller venues. Many major acts will do small venues just to get the kinks out before they hit the big arenas and such.

The Rolling Stones had a tradition in fact of always rehearsing in Toronto before every major tour and you never knew which club they were going to turn up at because they would have surprise gigs all over town.

  • tinawina

What would the Cook fans say is the average size crowd over his whole tour excluding festivals and that Red White and Boom concert which had 50,000 peeps.

That’s a great question. I don’t know for sure. The 1st half of the tour – the college part – had a 1000 seat cap on the venues. He sprinkled in some casinos and small theater shows here and there but I don’t think any of the non-college venues went past 2K or so. For this leg, it loos like they are mix 1.5-3K seaters, a couple of larger theaters & some bigger casinos (5K maybe?), and some huge festival/fair type shows.

I think we might see him open for a bigger act in the fall.

  • weareallinnocent

we were hoping he might tour with OLP this summer but I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t heard anything, pout.

That would be fantastic, and near heaven for him I’m sure!

And, I’ll admit I’m lame for not really knowing OLP pre-Cook. There’re are a few lost workaholic years that acted as an empty vacuum between me and good music. LOL

  • brewster

David Archuleta bears none of the responsibility for the poor ticket sales. This is not his tour, as evidenced by the lack of his name in the promotion. This is all team Disney. They put this actress out on an arena tour, having had little or no recording success, nor having proven she could sell concert tickets on her own, and this is what you get.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Well thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nice, but then WTF was the point of releasing so damn many versions of the album?

It might have to do with the vendors–Wal-mart, Target and iTunes–wanting exclusive material.

  • lavender1960

weareallinnocent the reality is, as much as we complain about the state of music in general, there is still more good music out there than there is time to enjoy it and find out about it.

OLP’s main fanbase is still mainly Canadian, though not exclusively clearly, plus Raine and his wife Chantal Krevasiuk are busy with solo careers, writing songs for other people, including Canadian Idol and Chantal is a spokesmodel for Clairol. Seriously AI get Raine and Chantal to do your coronation song next year. Please. Then maybe you can see 3 million downloads like a Kanye or BEP.

Curious to see what happens to Canadian Idol, Sass Jordan has said recently she would not be interested in returning IF the show is resurrected. I didn’t like the sound of that, IF the show is resurrected.

  • Hazehel

What would the Cook fans say is the average size crowd over his whole tour excluding festivals and that Red White and Boom concert which had 50,000 peeps.

Just curious, where did the 50,000 number come from? I’m sure I read it somewhere that the capacity is 18,000.

As mentioned before, the college venues are small, I think I read of one with capacity of only 350. I should imagine the average would still be less than a thousand if you include the non-college ones but exclude the festivals.

  • JRB5776

It might have to do with the vendorsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Wal-mart, Target and iTunesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’wanting exclusive material.

Yup. Same thing with Archie’s album. Regular album, Wal-Mart version (with one extra song), iTunes version, itunes Deluxe version (with 3 extra songs) and iTunes Deluxe Pre-Order ONLY version (4 extra songs).

Then there was the Japanese version (with 2 OTHER songs different than the iTunes Deluxe version), etc., etc. etc.

    Nuts!

  • lavender1960

Oops sorry Hazehel I thought people were saying David and the band played some outdoor venue with 50,000 peeps, did I get the wrong concert or did it just look like 50,000 people? I saw a shot of the crowd from the stage and it reminded me of concerts at Wembley Stadium which held 75,000 in the old days.

Any of the bands that have longevity will tell any younger band that the best thing to do is play play play regardless of the size of the venue or if you open or headline because that is how you develop your stage craft and your sound.

  • frogcooke

btw they presented his plaque to him tonight on stage :)

  • Hazehel

That must be the Manila one with both the Davids. They sold 50,000 tickets but there were more than 100,000 people in all – those without tickets watched from outside the concert ground. If I remember correctly, the first leg of the tour David Cook did a few festivals with capacity of 10,000 or thereabout, but most of the rest were fairly small as already mentioned. Working his way up to the bigger venues I suppose.

  • breakdown

Re: Daughtry. Yes, vendors want different exclusives. This is how it’s done by most artists today, at least those on major labels. You can’t expect 19 songs on one $10 cd. The basic cd will have 12 songs. You’ll be able to download the bonus singles separately as well.

  • Lexus

David Archuleta bears none of the responsibility for the poor ticket sales. This is not his tour, as evidenced by the lack of his name in the promotion. This is all team Disney.

The fact that it’s “Team Disney” is the reason I won’t go. I’m in my 30s and I’m proud to support David, but to be frank, there is no way in hell I’d be caught dead at a Demi concert….or a Miley concert….or a Jonas Brothers concert…even with David performing.

  • temkanoe

I’ve been wondering how much money Disneys shelling out for David. I really hope its more than what he was making on his own tour earlier this year.

That’s all I care about. .lol.

I also wonder if he’s going to schedule a show at a small club to make up for the canceled Demi tour dates.

  • AC

Does anyone know if it seems like the crowd is more for Archie than for Demi Lovato? (please leave all biases behind =) )

  • Tess

Considering David isn’t on the “bill” I would gather he is getting a flat rate for his participation (x dollars per gig expenses )for him and his band. While Demi is probably getting a cut of proceeds since she is the headliner. This is probably a nice financial gig for David and the band and he probably isn’t having to do a lot of the time-consuming marketing either.

So he’s out on the road performing, which he loves and he probably has time to work on his writing and composing. Even though I absolutely hate the gig he is involved with, I guess I’ll admit that it probably works out better for him than having to cough up the money for a solo tour extension that may have burned him out and left him with a lot less revenue.

  • wonderwhy

I was trying to Hold Back My Heart but as always I ended up with my Heart on My Sleeve. But at least instead of being tossed about with High Hopes and Heartbreak, I was able to cope with Heartbreak on Vinyl.

11 Songs is quite a lot of songs for an opener though I will say. Most opening acts do around 5 – 7 songs tops so it is almost like he is co-headlining.

I’ve been out of the concert-going demo for quite some time until the last year or so, so I don’t know how they market acts in general, but I believe when I got the announcement from the Mann about this particular Demi/David gig, David was listed as her “special guest.” I’ve noticed that “special guest” language a lot lately; is it something new?

When I saw Better Than Ezra at the Trocadero (holds ~1300, mostly SRO, but includes a cool balcony with benches) last week, they were joined by “Special Guest” Tyrone Wells. Tyrone performed for about an hour (the same length as David Cook’s headlining Declaration Tour peformance at Penn State York back in April). Now Tyrone (whom I’d never heard of, BTW) just released a new major label album, so I’m guessing the “special guest” billing is something that’s paid for by the artist’s management and is a step above the typical “with John Doe” billing?

I don’t know how these things work exactly, but $25 at the door to see BTE and Tyrone Wells seemed like an awfully good value, given how awesome both those acts were, compared to $50 for Demi/Archie or $35 for Cook/Ryan Star (who were both also awesome, but that show was SHORT!).

The Mann, BTW, is kind of an in-between-sized venue. It’s outdoors but more than half the seats are under a canopy and the rest of the seating is fully exposed to the elements, and then there’s a grassy section for folks to picnic on while catching the show. It’s the summer home of the Philadelphia Orchestra, so it has great acoustics.

Seriously, if you love David, just go to the show solo or bring a kid as your beard, because I expect he will be terrific, Disney crapfest notwithstanding. I’m not a big Archie fan (although I love the kid), but I don’t get not supporting somebody you love just because you don’t care for how he’s being marketed. It’s not like Archie is doing a special “Disney show.” YMMV, of course.
