Kelly Clarkson’s CMA Nod: How Did It Happen? – The nomination that caught a lot of us off guard was Kelly Clarkson in the Female Vocalist category. Was this a political move by the industry? Arguably, all nominations are politically fueled, but this one in particular seems to carry a fishy stench that one cannot eliminate with a few squirts of Febreze (I like Apple Mango Tango). Kelly has had just one official solo country single in her career, the remastered to ‘sound more country’ version of ‘Mr. Know It All’. It peaked at 21 on the country chart. My friend, Windmills dissected Kelly’s nomination in an article for mjsbigblog. – Read more at Broadway’s Electric Barnyard

Fans attend what type of events they are comfortable with, there’s something for everyone!

This is clearly true (at least for the people who have the funds to afford various types of events). But with touring receipts struggling, many artists will end up perfoming in sub-1350-capacity clubs that are entirely GA. If the artist on stage is not encouraging the formation of a pit or stage-rushing or anything like that (and I have never seen AI alumni encourage that; does Durbin?), then it’s not the “type of event” for fans who want to push and shove and make it hard for others to see, IMO. There can be a middle ground between “Rage On” and “Do the Standing Still” that makes the show most likely to attract diverse crowds. And the energy from diverse crowds is, IMO, the best.

IDK about Durbin’s concerts, I have never been to one. You stated that you don’t like yelling or people throwing their hands in the air blocking your view, so I’m going to assume that these types of things don’t happen at Durbin’s concerts, which is kind of unusual for a rock concert. Maybe it’s because there are mostly fans from AI in attendance and they are very calm compared to the average GA concert goer, who participates in unruly behavior such as raising their arms, jumping, screaming and even yelling out “I love you”.
Does JD attract a milder crowd than most rock acts?

James concerts can run from very rowdy to pretty normal depending on the situation. When he opened for Buckcherry and Drowning Pool at adult only venues, his shows were pretty rowdy with a good share of profanity. However, when he did shows at mixed audience venues, they were calmer, with hardly any profanity. He varied the shows depending on the venue and crowd present.

Here’s a video from his last show, the one Eilonwy went to in Scottsdale. It’s a pretty average response, not too rowdy, not too calm.

(Very bittersweet, though, to me as well because of the great chemistry with Dylan, James fans will sorely miss:(

What I stated was that I don’t like fans who make the show all about them. I think people can cheer without screaming their heads off, do an occasional fist pump without waving signs, yell out approval without being so incessant as to completely drown out the banter from on stage, or groove without body slamming everyone around them.

And since I go to many rock shows (I’ve been to more than 15 this year), I can say with a high degree of confidence that finding that median is not “unusual for a rock concert” or “mild behavior.” It’s just not being an ass to people.

As for Durbin, I’ve never seen him and so I don’t know either.  I simply asked because as a metal guy I’d figure he’d have pits if anyone did.

How wild a Durbin concert is depends on where James is performing, whether it’s an all ages venue or an over 21 venue, whether he’s headlining or opening for another band or playing a festival. James also adjusts his stage manner and performance style depending on the audience, for instance, he won’t pull out colourful language if kids are in attendance. I’ve never been to a Durbin concert myself but judging from footage on YouTube, the rowdier crowds were at Rock on the Range (there’s even crowd surfing in one vid), and his opening stints for Buckcherry (plenty of shouting, fist pumping, ect.). I heard the Steel Panther crowd in Baltimore was pretty rough, a few of them actually tried to give him a hard time but he wouldn’t take their crap. Both Buckcherry and Steel Panther’s music is pretty aggressive and vulgar so James will encounter rougher crowds when he opens for bands like that. As for us Durbin fans, plenty of us are metalheads who go see other hard rock and metal acts live, and we can get as rowdy as anyone else, even for James, but if there’s kiddos in crowd we’ll behave.

That very much depends on the audience and audience will depend on the venue, here’s James performing at Rock on the Range:

That makes sense and was what I expected Durbin’s concerts would be like. They sound like the typical GA type events where fans are jumping, screaming, fist pumping and some are even stumbling around drunk! :)  Thanks for the information!

Well, so since I found my Durbin excursion within the range of normal, then clearly my standards for reasonable concert etiquette aren’t insanely stuffy, and behavior that damages my show-going experience is pretty egregious. Glad we’ve straightened that out.

I’ve absolutely been to shows where there was crowd-surfing and such. I think I mentioned the outdoor metal show that had a mosh pit (who was that? Digital Summer opening for Burn Halo, I think, and maybe Puddle of Mudd?), where the cheap beer was flowing copiously and the lead singer of Digital Summer crowd-surfed his exit… but if a person wasn’t IN the mosh pit, the fist-waving and general excitement didn’t actually get in the way of hearing and seeing the show.

Writing songs and playing instruments when you can’t sing and still get a song topping the charts doesn’t make any sense either as is the case with H Hayes

I just watched the youtube you posted, James had a big crowd! They sure do keep a large area between the stage and the audience. I was wondering why, but then I clicked on this video from the same event:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YibHXTZqCEg&feature=related

I guess they are smart to keep some distance between the band and the audience! lol

James drew a huge crowd, and he was the first one performing on that stage that day.  This quick video shows the crowd from their point of view. There was a break in between bands and that’s why the crowd clears out in between each of the 3 bands.

Hardly, very hardly, anyone gets hurts, not even a scratch (I’m being serious). It’s pretty much a muctual agreement that no one can punch or kick, just collisions.I think you have much bigger chances of get hurt in some hip-hop shows than in a metal show.

You must have been to some REALLY wild concerts from Idols to be wilder than the crowd in the video I just posted! I had no idea that any of the Idols had crowds as wild as the ones at events like these or even the B.O.B./Kesha mud, sweat and drunk fest I attended last spring! Please tell me which Idol has concerts like these and in what part of the country you attended these wild, out of control Idol concerts, because I want to go see their shows!

My concert experiences for Idol shows have been fun, but downright calm compared to GA at Gaga, Wiz Khalifa and the festival with Kesha/B.OB./Cee Lo. (to name a few) There was definitely general crazed excitement at these shows that included obtstructed views at many times, being stepped on or smushed and pushed, and tons of screaming out during the banter. As I’m used to these types of concert experiences, I would love to attend a wild concert from a former Idol contestant. Which former Idol should I go see for a concert experience like this?

ETA: Thanks for the vids, guys! I bet James loved doing this event!
Leandro: OMG! That makes the Wiz Khalifa concert I attended look like Disney on Ice.

Another vid for comparison. Here’s James performing at another festival, Showboat RockFest. Note the hoards of screaming groupies, James even jokingly dubbed himself the Justin Bieber of the festival:
