Phillip Phillips, Colton Dixon and More Idols Weigh in on Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj Joining the Show – “I think the cheesy side of things is why they brought in Nicki Minaj,” Colton admits to OK!. “When I first heard it, I wasn’t crazy about it, to be honest, but you know it’s a TV show and people want entertainment.” And you better believe entertainment is exactly what AI fans will get this season. “I know there’s going to be bickering between her and Mariah Carey,” the seventh place finisher says. “It’s just inevitable and it’s going to be very entertaining to watch, I’m sure.” While most viewers are excited to tune into Nicki’s TV debut, season ten’s Haley might not be one of them. “I don’t think I’d like to see that. I don’t know if she’s the right fit.” Haley tells OK!, “I’d rather them get somebody, even Keith Urban.” – Read more at OK Magazine

Phillip Phillips: ‘I’m just a normal guy who wants to make it in the world’ – One amazing thing about Phillips is how he doesn’t want to change—how he doesn’t really want to be a celebrity. We all saw this on the show, like when he defied designer Tommy Hilfiger’s fashion advice. During our interview, he proved that he hasn’t changed his perspective. While not really being specific, he said, “There were times when they wanted to change me. They tried to change me a lot of times, and I told them, ‘This is me. I’m going to go out and I’m going to go out as something I’m proud of.’” – Read more at Inquirer.net

Taylor Hicks: ‘I plan to make Las Vegas proud’ with new Bally’s deal – Even when singer Taylor Hicks was at the lowest point of his life stripping and waxing nursing home floors, he never stopped believing that his showbiz break would eventually happen. Even when Taylor’s flight home from New Orleans was canceled because of Hurricane Katrina, he never stopped believing, and instead he used his free flight voucher and traveled to Las Vegas for an “American Idol” audition. “There was never any doubt in my mind. I was convinced that one day I would make it happen. It never was an if; it was always a when,” he told me as Bally’s today officially confirmed our earlier Vegas DeLuxe reports that he would be re-signing to stay on the Strip. – Read more at Las Vegas Sun

Chris Richardson’s first Twitter interview – Chris Richardson did his very first Twitter interview with ANDPOP’s @britt_mahaney. Cher Lloyd Ready to Swing ‘Sticks’ at U.S. – “The next morning, I was catapulted into a brand-new life,” the 19-year-old Lloyd recalls. “At that time, it was difficult for me to get my head around that and realize how I’m not going to be able to live the life that I did before.” Lloyd came in fourth on “The X Factor,” finishing behind One Direction, Rebecca Ferguson and series winner Matt Cardle. Playing in ‘The Voice’ Band: Guitarist on the ‘Overwhelming’ Demands of the Show – What’s harder: being in a touring band or playing in one on television? Rafael Moreira, guitarist for The Voice’s band, says there are pressures and advantages to the latter. “Its very intense and a lot of work because we have to learn the parts and there is little left to improvisation,” the Brazilian-born musician tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The amount of songs we learn and the hours we put in are pretty overwhelming … And I am a bit of perfectionist, so I really dig in.” – Read more at Hollywood Reporter.com

“my commentary is – ‘this season’ – neither did anyone else care.  Other seasons, that could have been a full blown “Gate’.”

Maybe people are less invested in Idol overall, now there are so many other singing shows. My (very) casual observation on this blog is that people aren’t commenting about the new season Idols as much as they continue to comment on many past season Idols. But I could be missing a lot because I don’t really care that much about this crop. Although I do have a not-so-secret crush on Joshua – but not enough to go out of my way to check out what he is up to. The rest I can take em or leave em.

…people aren’t commenting about the new season Idols as much as they continue to comment on many past season Idols. But I could be missing a lot because I don’t really care that much about this crop.

I don’t think your perception is very far off, roarpen. Lack of deep interest in this crop among the people who are attracted to this site = less comments about them here…no matter what other social apps are in play now.

For me, the lower age group in the past two seasons has created a cast of people who are mostly too young and inexperienced to connect with the songs, or convince me they mean a word of the lyrics…and the new structure has created a complete inability to know, for the most part, if these even are their song choices, their arrangements – or ‘competition’ songs they were given to do.

No one is permitted to take chances much anymore, so no one is very interesting.(to me)

The more I see these youngsters as Iovine’s “product” the less I am interested. The few exceptions of good vocals aren’t enough to hold that interest for a whole season. And there were some good vocals this year – I liked Josh, Erika and Elise…but they got smothered in the homogenization process backstage, and the blandest, most mendacious judging ever seen. IMO.

So I don’t think you are ‘off’ at all. Earlier seasons have more resonance. And if I never see another standing O on Idol – that’s alright with me. *snerk*

    JMO. Of Course.

This is exactly what had angered me about what others and Colton himself think as to how he got voted off. Could it have been the Lady Gaga song? Sure. But to me, the nail in the coffin was that horrendous rendition of an already overdone and annoying Earth Wind and Fire song. I remember watching his rendition of that song, and thinking “cheese and crackers, what the hell was that? That was one of the worst rearrangements I have ever heard on Idol.” But no let’s blame the heathen that is Gaga, because fans and Colton feels it doesn’t represent him as an artist due to his christian beliefs. I don’t mind Colton and all, but this holier than thou religious complex can get on my last nerve. I think Gaga was the least of his problems.

Yep. Gaga is a convenient scapegoat and allows Colton to blame something other than his horrible performances. I really have no patience with this kind of sanctimonious judgmental attitude. I do think that he really believes that Gaga was the problem though. lol

That’s my point. Not all Vegas residencies are the same. Plus, Taylor’s deal isn’t only performing in Vegas, but also at other Caesar properties nationally, so it will be interesting to see what portion of his performances are actually in Vegas vs. elsewhere. So that’s another difference between Taylor’s “residency” and those of the other big name stars.

residency. David Cassidy had a lengthy run there. The comedian Carrot

Rod Stewart and Donny & Marie now is comedians/impressionists.
Hell one of the biggest most in demand act is the Blue Man group.”

True, and to me, a “residency” means that the performer has a long-term arrangement to sing in Vegas, at a particular venue, and who won’t be performing around the country (as Taylor’s deal states).

  • roarpen

Agreed. They are too young to be interesting – or for their vocals to infuse believability into what they sing.
