GLAAD gives CW network high marks for diversity – NEW YORK (AP) — The advocacy group GLAAD has given the CW network high marks among broadcast outlets for its portrayal of gay and lesbian characters. Meanwhile, cable networks Showtime, ABC Family, TNT and HBO all were given a favorable rating by the group. The number of gay and lesbian images on TV held steady this year. But the range of impressions continued to grow, with those representations increasingly presented in a matter-of-fact manner rather than as curiosities, GLAAD found in its annual Network Responsibility Index. But two-thirds of all gay-and-lesbian-inclusive hours showcased white people, the study found, prompting GLAAD to call for networks to recognize a broader diversity within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. – Read more at The Associated Press

I’m a bit puzzled though by the pairing of S11 Idols with Idol alums at
these radio shows lately.  Is that a new thing?  I don’t remember that
    in previous years.

As I recall, during the Season 8 Idol tour, Kris and Adam hopped over to NYC from Atlantic City and joined David Cook for an appearance on Good Morning America, since DC was in NYC playing at the Nokia.

The two Davids from Season 7 played Manila together, which was a big success for them.

David Cook and Lee DeWyze did a private gig together.

Carrie had David Cook as a guest on her Christmas special.

I recall at least one joint appearance with Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta.

    Allison and Adam toured together.

David Cook did a charity show at which Taylor Hicks was present.

Carly Smithson was invited by David Cook to do a number with him at one of his shows around New Years a year or so ago.

David Cook and Haley Reinhart played at that celebrity baseball game.

That’s just off the top of my head. Probably many others. So, yeah these people sometimes appear at the same event. Sometimes it’s Idol related, sometimes not.

This will be the 3rd appearance Phillip will be making with Alanis Morisette.

Phillip & Adam can get together and exchange notes on things that have been made up about each of them.

thirdtime, The roster for the concert is Alanis Morrisette, Gavin DeGraw, Adam and Phillip.

David Cook was writing with Cary Barlowe today according to this tweet from Cary Barlowe:

Great hanging and writing with @thedavidcook today !!!

Cary Barlowe’s done a lot with TobyMac (a Christian pop/hiphop/soul act), and also cowrote Lady A’s #1 country hit American Honey with Hillary Lindsey and Shane Stevens, as well as Carrie’s Do You Think About Me with the same 2 people (a song that may be in line to be the 3rd single off Blown Away). American Honey and Do You Think About Me are both catchy, rootsy country/pop songs. I doubt that’s all that indicative of the style of any songs Cook wrote with him but, it’s nice to see Cook making the rounds collaborating with some strong Nashville writers.

Carrie’s on the cover of the new issue of Nashville Lifestyles mag. New cover pic here and the very beginning of the article is here.

Lol, TheOther, they probably have a lot of stories they could share!

Then there is also all the country people, like Kellie made an appearance on Bucky’s video, Lauren, Carrie, and Scotty all played in the City Of Hope Softball game this year, Scotty and Lauren performed in LA during the S11 finale(Sang When You Say Nothing At All), etc. I also remember Lee and Kris doing a show together in Portland, and Haley and Lee were both on one of those cooking shows lol.

David Cook was writing with Cary Barlowe today according to this tweet from Cary Barlowe:

Yes, apparently the writing is heating up a bit this week … or at least *the reporting* of the writing is heating up. The following was tweeted on Wednesday:

?@thedavidcook Finishing up a song with @BlairDaly. Two lefties writing! In medieval times, that would constitute witchery.

windmills, I just read that tweet from Cary Barlowe, and started googling for what kind of music he writes – I had no idea who he was. I ought to have just checked with you! Heh.

Reassuring to find his history includes one foot firmly planted in the Rock world – and the ‘story telling’ approach from Country music combined with that may have interesting results.

I didn’t know who Blair Daley from yesterday’s writing session was either – and I see he has a varied song writing history also…oh well – there’s extra research involved for David’s co-writers this time around, for sure!

    Always interesting.

Great to hear David is writing more this week.  And it does sound like a good collaborator for him.

If the base of AI fans were a larger part of the music buying public, as they were in earlier seasons, then first, PDs would be less likely to assume that they can ignore AI fans as people who never listen to their formats other than when the snowflake is in rotation,

PDs had no problem ignoring Taylor Hicks, even though his season was the most popular, and his debut numbers weren’t too shabby.  They also didn’t have an issue with ignoring Clay, and we know how well his album sold.  They also ignored Diana, Bo, Justin, Katherine, and Blake.  I’m sure that I’m missing some more alums, who PDs ignored, even though the AI fanbase was large.

That seems to be the entire point of the S12 strategy: Bring in more fans who are likely to have purchased recent music, and bring in more fans period.

Nope that’s not the strategy.  The strategy is about ratings, the producers could care less about whether or not the new viewers purchase music.  The alums could sell more music, but if the ratings fall, then the show is over.

The funny thing is, Casey Abrams influenced Phillip to try out for Idol, and Casey, in turn, was influenced by Adam.  So, indirectly, Phillip owes his experience on Idol to Adam.

Considering that Phillip tried out for America’s Got Talent, I don’t think that he needed a lot of encouragement to give AI a try, especially since AI is the more legitimate show.

My HAC station had The Real Thing in rotation until just a few years ago, but that’s just one data point. Regardless, what you’re basically saying is that they ignored less-promoted runner-ups, and that a strong-selling runner-up and winner who had no natural format outside of AC didn’t do well outside of AC (but they both charted there, and Aiken reasonably consistently). That doesn’t prove to me that winners who could presumably have a home format on more contemporary mainstream (or even more niche) formats would be ignored as well, given a larger, more diverse audience pool.

As for ratings, I maintain that the size and demographics of the audience feed into the potential pool of album buyers and the success of AI albums contributes to the perception of relevancy and ratings. Neither is the only factor, but neither is immaterial, either.

How would anyone know whether Kris has the means to afford constant travelling? Unless someone has  access to his bank account/financial records, no one would know this.

What is wrong with staying with friends rather than in a hotel? (A) you save a ton of money and (B) you get to be with your friends rather than sitting in a hotel room all by yourself. There’s certainly nothing unprofessional about it.

How is this a foregone conclusion? The RCA rep for the NE US was just with Kris at his show in Boston earlier this month. If they had dropped him, Paul Nelson (the RCA rep) would not have been at that gig, or accompanied him to the radio interview he did the day after the show.

I was told just recently that RCA has no intention of dropping him anytime soon. Now maybe I’m being fed a load of BS, but Kris also said himself just two weeks ago that he is releasing a second single “pretty soon”. Would he say that if he knew he had been or was about to be dropped? Unlikely. And would Yahoo! be posting a 4-part interview with him, complete with performances, next month if he had been dropped? Again — unlikely. Lastly, I have heard that there are some good things coming up for Kris in the fall. Again, I don’t have any specific details, but I am hoping that this Yahoo! interview will give us some answers.

Oh yeah, Blair Daly has landed a lot of high profile country cuts over the years. He’s very well established in the country world, and I think he’s done some work with Southern Rock acts too.

If you want to hear a recent example of a Blair Daly cowrite that fits into the heartland rock/country lane, check out Kip Moore’s current single Beer Money: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0IQkcYf4rU

In the last few years there’s really been a growing trend of songwriters from other genres seeking out Nashville writers and Nashville writers opening up to collaborations with writers outside the genre. I’ve mentioned the collab between Nashville-based Creative Nation and LA-based Pulse Recording as an example of Nashville writers  to increase their presence outside the country genre. So, their past credits may be heavily country but it’s not indicative of limitations as far as what they are willing to write or interested in writing.

Incipit: Reassuring to find his history includes one foot firmly planted in the Rock world – and the ‘story telling’ approach from Country music combined with that may have interesting results.

That’s something I’ve wanted to see Cook work on so I definitely see the potential for these collabs to yield songs that I’d like to hear from him.

You can think that the alums selling well is important to the producers of the television show, but that doesn’t make it true.  In fact, it shows the perception problem that started this conversation.  While some idol fans will always see the alums as idols and television personalities, the fact is that once the show is over they become new artists, and like all artists they have to do radio shows, and try to appeal to the same PDs and radio stations, which is why we see the alums playing at some of the same shows.

The show is not the same thing as what happens after the show, and the former contestants’ careers.

  • sdmama

Ha, ha, ha. I miss Simon. Because he said that during that show, his standing ovation later was weighed in gold. Unlike other people who kept saying how wonderful so and so was in every single show :D That was a good year.

  • standtotheright

None of which remotely counters my point that when the music-buying audience is a larger share of the population, the alumni are more likely to reach a larger audience and the show is likely to be considered more relevant and maintain ratings better.

Of course they have to do the same things to promote themselves that other artists do. But the fact that they do those things without the same results as many other artists because of the AI stigma is a big problem for them and for the credibility of the show, and it goes directly back to what the outside world thinks about AI and its audience. The larger and more engaged with current music that audience is, the less likely perception is to be a problem.

  • IrisandLilies

That’s not necessarily true.  Phillip tagged along with his sister and brother-in-law when they tried out for America’s Got Talent and ended up trying out for the show as well.  However, if I recall correctly, he said that he didn’t even get to perform before the producers like his sister and brother-in-law did.  Perhaps he took away from that experience that he wasn’t very good or that his style would not appeal to the people that watch talent shows.  Phillip further stated that Casey influenced him in part to try out because he saw that a jazz/bluesy-rock musician could have some success on AI.

I don’t think that Casey was the sole reason that Phillip tried out for AI nor do I think that Adam was the sole reason that Casey tried out for AI.  However, I do think that they were a factor.

BTW, Adam, Casey and Phillip were my favorites in Season 8, 10 and 11, so I appreciate this “connection” between them.
