She continued, “Jessica was probably, maybe 11, I think. And there’s this picture of us. We both look so little. She showed it to me, because I performed in the finale this year as well. She was like, ‘Look at this picture!’ I was just like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ She is so sweet. She is so tiny. But she is very, very talented. Her voice is so amazing. And I think when she discovers what she really wants to sing in her voice and what she wants to do with it, she is going to be unstoppable for sure.” – Read more at Manila Bulletin

You make a great point about Dreamgirls.  According to Box Office Mojo, during it’s first weekend of wide release Dreamgirls made $14.1 million. The thing that helped it is that that averaged out to $16,500 per theater.  It’s wide release was Deceber 29-31st, and even though that’s a huge time for new movies, wide release for that film translated to just 852 screens. Even with the high per theater average, the film played in less than 2000 theaters over the next two weeks.

    http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=dreamgirls.htm

This link shows the weekly boxoffice for Dreamgirls.  The movie never had a week where it was shown in 3000 theaters, the highest that it ever got was 2,797.  That didn’t happen until the movie had been out for four weeks.  It took time to convince tptb that there was a demand for the movie.

Danny Gokey’s non-profit foundation has just announced that Kris Allen and Jamar Rogers will be joining Danny for the 2013 charity / concert cruise. The cruise is from Orlando to the Bahamas in February.

The guest for the 2012 cruise was Matt Giraud who brought his “little brother,” sweet.

I may have to start saving for a cruise :)

Can someone who went on last years cruise give a little insight into the cruise? It would be a different venue to see Kris in, I wonder if Katy will go?

Cruise, huh? :) It does say in the fine print that artists are subject to change but you don’t get your $ back if that happens. I think the cruise sold out last year, didn’t it?

  • steph6449

KendraWills, Danny has done two of these cruises to raise funds for his non-profit, which is operating music & arts programs for disadvantaged kids in Milwaukee and Nashville, and a transitional facility in Nashville for homeless families and others in need (sophiasheart.org).

In the two earlier events, there were multiple concerts during the cruise. This year, Danny did an initial concert, Matt did one of his own, and then they did a final concert together. Plus there was at least one m&g for everyone who went, and an additional m&g opportunity on the cruise’s formal night. Danny even did dress up, lol.

The concerts were acoustic, very interactive and informal, and they took requests, sometimes answered questions from fans…

Various items were auctioned off for the non-profit, with a silent auction, special experiences, etc.  The auctions included things like a chance to have dinner with Danny or Matt, chance to have a private serenade from Danny or Matt, etc. A portion of the cruise ticket benefits the non-profit.

The special concerts and things were scheduled so that they didn’t conflict with doing the regular cruise ship highlights, like going ashore for excursions when the ship reached the destination port.

I noticed that with Kris coming, Danny had to give up first billing on his own cruise, aww–lol. Seems like a lot of good singing to be heard with this group :)

As far as Katy, I don’t know but might be possible. Matt brought his little brother as I mentioned. This year Danny had Leyicet with him, of course that was pretty much required as the date happened to more or less be their honeymoon :O   That will be a challenge for Danny probably next year, as February 2013 is just shortly after baby Gokey is due to make his or her appearance.

ETA on the billing, I think that’s appropriate that Kris would be before Danny. But I suppose it is also alphabetical, ha, between Kris “Allen,” Danny “Gokey” and Jamar “Rogers.”

Why would the artists change? I doubt Kris would disappoint fans by canceling.

I would love to hear about some upcoming events for Kris tho, like NOW.

Steph6449, what about band members? For instance, will Kris be able to bring along Cale and/or Torres for his set?  Katy Allen will be in school teaching so it may be difficult for her to take off.

  • Anonymous

I think it was this year’s cruise that the Rascal Flatts dude cancelled & Matt. G took his place.

  • steph6449

I don’t have any insight into what the specific plans may be with Kris and Jamar, or even what band members might come with Danny. I would expect there to be some band member(s) along though, from whichever contingent(s).

I only know what the past precedents have been. The first cruise, Danny had nearly his whole band along with him (keyboard, bgv’s, drums, lead guitar, bass), doing an acoustic show.

This year, Matt did not bring any band with him, but of course Matt by himself is almost a band :)

Danny had Brandon Fraley along, and Brandon played keyboards and sang with both Danny and Matt.  Jamie Fraley (more bgv’s) might have come with him, but I think she was committed somewhere with Carrie around that time. Both Brandon and Jamie were with Danny on a date he had this weekend, so may be a chance that they will both be on the cruise.

Let’s see, I have to fly to Florida and then cruise … yep, no money. :(

I hope Kris will have a show here in SoCal soon, please…
September can not come soon enough for Lyndsey’s interview with Kris.

This is It and Sparkle– Last performance of an iconic singer who has passed away prior to release.

    DreamGirls and Sparkle–All black cast

Did the all black cast of Dream Girls affect it’s success?
Would the world have turned out in droves to see Michael in anything after he died–concert or scripted film?

I don’t understand why this would be marketed to only African American women. Whitney was a main stream artist with male and female fans of all races.  I do understand why they are targeting an older demographic.

    Charming.

I shall never understand behaviour like this. Honestly, no perfomer deserves to have anything thrown at them let alone human waste. Ugh.

And you just know the guys who did this are sniggering about how clever they are. Any primate can fling poo. Ugh.

This is It and Sparkle– Last performance of an iconic singer who has passed away prior to release.

As I said, the audience for a concert film featuring all MJ’s music is not targeting fans in the same way that a scripted film featuring one performance from Whitney Houston would. Especially since MJ still had his voice and Houston…largely didn’t.

    DreamGirls and Sparkle–All black cast

Again, a cast featuring Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, and Beyonce Knowles is not the same as a cast featuring Jordin Sparks and Derek Luke. And even then, I already pointed out that it wasn’t a huge blockbuster out of the gate. It never ranked higher than third in weekend box office and basically sustained on the Oscar campaign through February.

Houston and the Sparkle team relied on a small budget to get the project greenlit. That also means marketing had a smaller budget. I think the goal was to target the most responsive audiences first and then hope that buzz and word of mouth would keep it going. Seems like a reasonable playbook to me.

Pathetic. If they find it so funny, they can do what everyone else does and throw it at each other and put it up on Youtube. The girl just trying to have a career should be able to get through her damn set.

We are coming at this from a different place.

I was asking questions that really can’t be answered.

I have been to both the Reading festival and the V in Chelmsford during my numerous visits to the UK and I can not honestly say I am surprised.  These festivals are not for the feint of heart.  Bottling is pretty common place.  What I am surprised about is that her management booked her for this gig because hers is not the sort of music commonly heard at these festivals.  That could be why … I remember seeing that Taylor Swift was playing one year and I was scratching my head at that one.

I remember taking the last train back to London from Chelmsford smelling pretty grim from the day.  When you have people drinking all day, then drinking all night on the campgrounds, beer and alcohol and food etc being consumed and spilled everywhere, it becomes a very smelly proposition.  While there is no excuse whatsoever for this behaviour, sadly the circumstances are ripe for it.  Poor Cher…
