Katharine McPhee Branching Out Into EDM and Pop on Next Album – Even before Smash was cancelled at the end of last season, McPhee was making strides on her new as-yet-untitled album, out this fall on Columbia. She’s written with Sia and Ryan Tedder, as well as discussed collaborating with EDM star Calvin Harris. “Not every song has to be something I’ve written, but I do know it has to be something I connect to and it has to be a melody that suits me and that doesn’t feel like it’s a stretch,” says the American Idol alumnus, who cites Rihanna, Katy Perry and La Roux as current favorites. – Read more at Rolling Stone

Demi Lovato Tells Contestant at The X Factor Auditions: “You’re the Reason I Don’t Drink Anymore!” – An X Factor source tells us exclusively that Lovato and Cowell got some serious jabs in during the Denver auditions when a Miami native showed up to sing (and apparently butcher) Rihanna’s hit single ” Only Girl (in the World)”. “You remind me of when I am outside a night club in Vegas at 5 a.m. and there are drunk girls leaving the club singing,” he told the girl. “It sounded a lot like that.” Lovato laughed and added: “I agree with Simon, actually. No disrespect to Jordin Sparks, but how exactly does she lend “street cred” to any project? And, the same question applies to Harry Shum, Jr.

    :)

  • Sassycatz

So, according to TV Line (Ausiello Q&A), Nashville is going to have an American Idol type character next season: a northern girl trying to break into the country music biz and trying to disguise her background. LOL!

  • girlygirl

I can’t see Kat as a pop or EDM artist, somehow. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Anoop’s looking a lot different these days.

  • windmills

I went hunting for the link after you posted so for anybody else who’s curious about spoilers, here it is.

Interesting that they’re adding characters, seeing as they already have a lot. I guess it makes sense on some level, especially to present a more populated universe. It’s also interesting how female-centric the show is with respect to its country world, considering how male-centric the country world is (despite several of the biggest stars being female). Despite my complaints about continuity and holes in plot development on ‘Nashville,’ I do appreciate the show’s portrayal of strong, ambitious women. I’m interested to see how they handle a talent competition winner. Though I’m also hoping they do a good job with Will’s storyline as a closeted aspiring country star – it’s potentially the most interesting storyline on the show IMO.

  • Liteasy

She’s tried everything else, so I guess this is what’s left. I can’t see her being pop or EDM either.

  • bridgette12

Jordin Sparks and street cred shouldn’t be in the same sentence. There’s nothing edgy about her, losing weight and dating a bigger star won’t give her the thing she needs most, a interesting personality.

  • bridgette12

Lauren really need to tone down the makeup. She’s looking so Tammy Faye Bakerish.
As for Kat, you have to give it to her, she don’t give up. She fails most of the time, but she won’t stop fighting for a music or acting career.

David Archuleta sang the national anthem at a reception in celebration of July 4th yesterday at the U.S. Embassy in Santiago, Chile. The embassy posted pictures of the event on their official FB page:

  • Larc

That’s the shortest I’ve ever seen Archie’s hair. Somewhat military looking. It must be the official Mormon missionary style.

  • hellomusicgirl

Ha, yeahhhh I’m not a fan of the hair. I hope they let him start growing it out a month (or two) before he comes back. /shallow comment/ ;)

  • girlygirl

Lee is going on tour with Serena Ryder starting August 2. That could be a good fit for him — I think her song Stompa hit #1 on the AAA charts

  • usedtobelucy

Maybe she’s been taking street cred lessons from Jordin.

Seriously, to me this is just more evidence that Katharine still hasn’t figured out who she is — or at least figured out that you’ll do best if you are who you are…

Personally, I think she’s a woman well suited to singing standards in a kind of old-fashioned way. Or thereabouts. If she devoted herself to that, I suspect she could engineer a pretty decent career for herself, get to play some fairly good venues. She’s got the looks, her voice has appeal. …

But of course you are very unlikely to be a big star doing that, and I get the feeling that somebody is almost as devoted to making Katharine a big star as to making Nicole Scherzinger a big star. … Just a big waste of time, in both cases, I expect. But I think that if Katharine went with what she’s good at, she could do quite nicely.

  • Mateja Praznik
  • elliegrll

    She’s tried everything else

That’s part of the problem. It’s like she’s not passionate about anything except becoming a start. Adult Contemporary is a better fit for her, and the only issue is that that route may not help her achieve her ultimate goal of having people know her name.

  • Sassycatz

Well, I can’t argue with this:

“The pop icon slammed the talent show format on both sides of the Atlantic for focusing too much on the coaches and not the contestants.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row, he said: ‘The Voice is all about watching the judges, it is in America.'”

  • mmb

why should she give up? she is an entertainer and she is making what appears to be a good living in the entertainment industry…what is failure? She got a lead role in a highly touted network TV show that ran for 2 seasons? Its troubles don’t rest solely on her shoulders. She isn’t a movie star but she had kept getting relatively steady work. She has a new major label record deal, etc. etc. She isn’t a mega star multiplatinum award winning actress/singer, but she is a working actress/singer…hardly seems like failure to me (I’m not a Kat fan by the way…just thinks she deserves more credit than she gets for having a viable entertainment career)

  • mmb

I adore Nashville..can’t wait for new season. Hayden Panetierre has been giving an incredible performance…didn’t know she had it in her…all of the performances on the show are good. lots of interesting story lines

  • Fan Dja

David Archuleta was invited to sing the national anthem at the US Embassy in Chile.

  • Fan Dja

I just posted the link, didn’t read first lol

What a nice surprise to see a current picture of David and what an honor to receive that invitation. David singing the national anthem is always a treat.

  • Fan Dja

haha, I may know way to much about David but here it goes…His hair grows really fast so he probably gets it cut so short as to not have to get it cut so often :)

  • Liteasy

Well her hubby is her manager, so he’s the one that’s pushy her so much. I think she just wants to be a STAR no matter what, but she doesn’t have the “It” factor to achieve that goal.

  • irockhard

That’s part of the problem. It’s like she’s not passionate about anything except becoming a star.

Bingo! This, for me, is “musical prostitution” and those who engage in this “act” will never be taken seriously and considered true artists.

  • bridgette12

I would give her more credit if she actually succeeded at something instead of going from one project to the next and never really performing well. Obviously having connections is a great thing, but being mediocre on various projects, does not equal success.

  • bridgette12

It helps to know what your passionate at and dedicate your time and energy into being successful.

  • irockhard

All these years and she still doesn’t know? Um well then I think she’s a lost cause.

  • bridgette12

Lol! Poor Sherri, who’s mom hasn’t embarrassed them a time or two.

  • H.A.

I agree. I admire Kat’s determination to stay busy and trying to make it in the entertainment business. Her acting skills may not be Emmy worthy but most actors don’t become stars overnight. Many have been doing it for years before they make it big. It only takes the right role and hit show to elevate you on the A-Lists of actors. I bet many of the actors looking back in their careers wished there were roles that they never took. As for her music career. Who cares. If a label is willing to invest in her more power to her.

  • bridgette12

I think she’s one of these people who try something, if they fail, they move on. I think she’s certainly better at singing than acting, maybe she’s need to concentrate on that and find out where she fit and dedicate herself to it.

  • irockhard

She’s getting older though, for pop at least. I’m not as familiar with EDM but I imagine you gotta work the underground for a few years?

  • H.A.

I’m not convinced Kat and EDM go together. I do think she can have a JHud type of career. Do both acting and music. I don’t think anyone should be force to choose one over the other or try to fit into one box. Even Justin Timberlake juggles both. If you fail, you should get back up and try again. If you have no ambition in the entertainment business your going to fail anyway.

  • irockhard

Except that JHud and JT are actually good at both, Kat is not.

  • D. Kennedy

Jordin Sparks and “street cred” don’t go together at all. She’s not even close to edgy, Carly Ray Jepsen’s more edgy than her.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Scotty’s busy today…here’s an interview with an Irish blogger(?)….

    http://www.themusicintro.com/2013/07/top-21-under-21_3.html

  • H.A.

Well, Kat keeps getting roles so someone thinks she is. I don’t think JHud is that great of an actress neither or Beyonce for that matter but ther’re paying the bills.

  • jdanton2

Excited to see Jordin in the upcoming video for Bon Qui Qui. she might have more edge to her than people think. Also Jordin is potentially going to be in a new movie . It is a small film and they are raising money to fund it. It is called The Grace Of Jake.what it says about her role. “JORDIN SPARKS – to play the role of NICOLE LOVELY, the
preacher’s daughter who dreams of a life outside of the delta. It’s not
until JAKE comes to town that NICOLE realizes home may be where the
    heart is. ”

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1302190854/help-us-make-the-grace-of-jake?ref=live

  • girlygirl

I doubt it. Jordin grew up very well off and has always projected this image as a “good” girl, complete with wearing a purity ring. Nothing wrong with any of that, of course, but it doesn’t exactly scream street cred or edgy

  • bridgette12

Kat certainly is not within in a mile of JHud and JT. She keeps getting opportunities because of her connections and not because of past work or earning good reviews.

  • Tinawina

    I think it’s obviously a joke. :)

  • DaisyMagnolia

I’m sensing cheeky sarcasm here. And I’m usually one to miss that sort of thing. Because really, how can anyone from Idol or Glee be edgy? That’s the point, and that’s the joke. :-D

  • DaisyMagnolia

Beyonce is doing a lot more than paying the bills. Same with Jennifer.

  • DaisyMagnolia

I can appreciate the success angle, but how does that translate to suggesting she should stop pursuing a career?

  • mchcat

Agree, I love this show Hayden and Connie are both brillant

  • wordnerdarchie

  • bridgette12

I never said she should stop pursuing a career, just find thing your good at and put in the effort. Stop failing, then going to something else and failing again. All she’s doing is treading water, hoping some good will happen for someone with her limited abilities. At her best, she’s a mediocre actress and her singing has brought her no success.

“…there’s a video on the first page that has clips of both Carrie & David.”

I saw that, wordnerdarchie, they used the Glory Note clip from David – “The rocket’s red glare” Three Idol alumni mentioned, two winners in the video that went with the NY Times article – and some nice DC quotes. Idol can put that in their scrapbook.

I also appreciated the re-inforcement in the opening paragraph of what a bear that song is to sing – sometimes I will see the difficulty level dismissed, though I’ll be kind and assume this is only done by people who don’t sing.

Good Fortune and thank you, to all fifteen of the artists singing the National Anthem somewhere across the country today for the 4th of July.
