Resuscitating ‘Idol,’ and idols – Diva supreme Mariah Carey assumed the daunting task this week of trying to right TV’s biggest cruise ship, the SS American Idol, which has been taking on so much water of late that its lifeboats are swinging loose in their cradles. Just what did Fox get for $18 million? That’s a matter of speculation. “Mariah is famous primarily for her work in recording studios. Nobody really knows what to expect from her on live TV,” says Rolling Stone columnist Rob Sheffield via e-mail. “She doesn’t have a lot of experience talking off the top of her head in public, to say the least.” – Read more at Philly.com

Phillip Phillips interview for ‘Idols Live’ tour August 5: ‘I’m not trying to be a huge star.’ – “I’m just getting as much rest as I can, taking it slow,” he said, in a phone interview last week from a tour date in Glendale, Ariz. Kelly Clarkson talks ‘American Idol,’ ‘Duets,’ ‘Stronger’ – Ten years after taking the crown as America’s first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson returned to the world of reality singing competitions in May with the launch of “Duets,” which features Clarkson, Robin Thicke, John Legend and Jennifer Nettles as mentors who also perform duets with the contestants. ‘American Idol’ singer: This one goes out to Brandon – “I feel like it was crazy being out there in Los Angeles, and so far from anyone I knew. It was really nice to feel the support from here, particularly Brandon. I got an enormous amount of email and Facebook and Twitter responses just supporting me 100 percent. While I’m back in town, it’s the least I can do to thank them.” Fraker has been on a European tour with a group he was with on the show — the eight members of Groove Sauce. Earlier this summer, the tour traveled to England, the Netherlands and Italy. Group members are taking a week off before heading on the final leg to Japan, Korea and Guam.
