Castro shares his daydream with the hometown crowd

What a day for a daydream, what a day for a hometown boy. Jason Castro celebrated his much awaited return to Rockwall on Thursday to an estimated crowd of 15,000 anxious and cheering fans.

Preparing for the celebration was more than a month in planning. Castro family friend, Carol McMillan, met with city officials before the American Idol Top 3 were announced to make plans for Jasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hometown visit. Although Jason did not make the Top 3, the city of Rockwall kept the plans in place to honor Castro for his achievements and welcome him back home Texas style.

American Idol’s Blake Lewis Wants His iPod to Do Unspeakable Things

Hey, remember Season 6 of ‘American Idol’? Remember that guy, what’s-his-name, the hot one that did beatboxing and almost won but then didn’t? Well, he didn’t need your deciding votes! Runner-up Blake Lewis is doing just fine, thank you à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ after being ranked 21st-hottest on AOL’s 21 sexiest single men list last July (aw, that’s kinda sad actually), he cut an album with Arista records, and Lupe Fiasco was on it!

May 13th marked the release of his latest endeavor, a remix EP for the hit single “How Many Words.” Even though he’s rolling with big name producers and DJs like BT, DJ Dan, and Britney collaborator Dave Aude, he still found time to tell Switched about his sex, um, we mean, tech life. Read on to find out more, but Blake, you’re a winner in our book!

This is her now

When talking to Jordin Sparks, what really jumps out is how young the former “American Idol” winner still is. The 18-year-old singer from Arizona says frequently that the toughest part of dealing with the “Idol” process and the subsequent recording and promotion chores is being away from her family.

“You don’t know how much I miss them, and it’s really, really tough,” Sparks says, sounding just like someone who’s no more than a year out of high school.

Sparks adds that the books she likes to dip into when she gets moments away from the music grind are those in the popular teen supernatural “Twilight” series. She takes a deep breath and sighs before admitting to the TV show she watches most frequently. “It has to be ‘SpongeBob SquarePants.’” A giddy laugh emerges. “I know I shouldn’t, but I do. It’s so great.”

Four Utahns on new season of hit Fox show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

Four professional dancers from Utah are competing to high-step their way to stardom on the newest season of the hit Fox reality show, “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Two of the dancers, Matt Dorame, 22, and Thayne Jasperson, 27, trained at the Odyssey Dance Theatre company in Salt Lake City. Chelsie Hightower, 18, Pleasant Grove, is a teacher at the Center Stage Performing Arts Studios in Orem. The fourth contestant is Gev Manoukian, a 21-year-old hip hop/break dancer originally from Kazakhstan living in Centerville.

Meet Your New ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Top 20

FOX’s summer hit “So You Think You Can Dance” cut down to the Top 20 for its fourth season on Thursday (June 5) night.

If you’re looking for trends, this season features several foreign-born contestants (a “So You Think You Can Dance” tradition) as well as several Utah-based dancers whose credits include the ultra-popular “High School Musical” franchise. And, as usual, nobody with a tap-dancing specialty is included.

Reality Check: ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Not for the Weak

From the last round of auditions in Milwaukee to the top-20 selection in Vegas, it was an action-packed week for “So You Think You Can Dance” as the show said goodbye to more than 180 dancers.

Erica Gee was one of the first sent home, but her tearful parting words rang true throughout the entire Vegas episode: “If you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢tà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ have a thick skin, you probably shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be a dancer,” she said.

Amen! You need a thick skin just to watch half these people get the ax, let alone be the ax-ee.

Though Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure you can really call Robert Murraine an ax-ee. Nigelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s “favorite dancer of 2008″ (and mine, too) sent himself home after feeling defeated by the first round of Vegas choreography. Luckily, it gave everyone a chance to see his solo one more time (which was so good I had to rewind and watch twice more).

But despite words of encouragement from the judges and thunderous applause from the audience, the pop-n-locker decided he just wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t cut out for this competition.

Beau-ti-ful pictures of Taylor last night. He put his harp in the plaster beside his signature and handprints at Planet Hollywood. I haven’t seen any reviews yet, but I expect them to be wonderful.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

I mentioned this in chat last night, but David Cook was on The Soup for about three seconds last night. They did a piece on Clay where they “interviewed” him about the Claby using old interview footage. Then they had DC doing the “Chicks, Man,” (which normally Ryan Seacrest does) and Joel says, “OOooo…there’s an American Idol contestant I’d want to have a baby with.” Randomly funny if you love The Soup as much as I do!

  • jpfan

If you waiting for any NYC critics to review Taylor anytime soon, don’t bother. They only post reviews of opening nights and will sometimes go back and do a review if a lead performer is replaced.

  • cheese

Here’s Joel’s “interview” with Clay on The Soup (hee!):

And David’s “Chicks, Man” (I couldn’t find a clip with both parts!)

  • dfc

Well shoot. I was hoping to hear from some professional critics about Taylor’s performance. Someone who went last night said he was awesome. I would like to go myself, but I’m too far away and the tickets start at $71.00. Too expensive for me. But, at least he will be performing the 13th on Regis and Kelley.

  • IGetCranked

It’s so nice to see positive Taylor news again!

David was smart to not let anyone touch his hair until Idol. I truly believe that he knew how to play the game along with his singing talent because he actually had a “looks” transformation throughout the show. Fans of this show like to see the coal turned to a diamond and he gave us that along with great singing.

  • Jolene

Thanks for the Tubey links, cheese! Could someone explain the “chicks, man” bit to me? Is that a running joke on The Soup? And what’s the Ryan connection?

Methinks Joel has a bit of a mancrush. Who could blame him, though?

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

Could someone explain the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“chicks, manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ bit to me? Is that a running joke on The Soup? And whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the Ryan connection?

Joel has some regular catchphrases used on The Soup. “Let’s talk about chicks man” is a segment on the show that is self-explanatory. He has had others do that phrase, including Ryan and, of course, Mr. Cook. (And, of course, the memorable “Oprah, girlfriend!” which Ryan has also done.)

You kinda have to watch the show, which is hilarious, and takes NO prisoners, to see what goes on there.

Thanks for explaining! From what little I saw on the Tube, it does look hilarious, but sadly we don’t get the show in my country, so I don’t have the option of watching it regularly.

Oh, another question – is it true that DC will be on the next cover of OK! magazine, or is that a flase rumor? I saw it floating around, but heard nothing new in the last few days.

I saw the show last summer and decent tickets (i.e., tickets that allowed you to see the entire stage) were about $125.

jpfan, thanks for the info. I didn’t expect the critics to rush out to see Taylor, but it was nice to get some confirmation on how that whole process works.

Anyway, he looks like he’s having fun, and if he is and so is his audience, good for everyone involved. :)

Bringing a camera into a Broadway show? Not cool, Zeus! I remember Clay giving his fans a big lecture about not bringing cameras into the show, that he’d really embarrassed if footage like that found its way on to the internet. From what I can tell, the Claymates were good about that.

ETA: Watching the footage, I’m reminded about how so very much I hate Grease. LOL. Taylor sounds good though, he’s a good fit for the show.

Taylor was also in the finale of the show, foxydonna, and evidently he sang some of the main lines in the song (Grease is the word, etc.) and also played the harp (and did the hand jive – with the microphone in one hand.) The cast was grinning non-stop, and it looks like he brought a fresh excitement to the show – which is good for any Broadway musical.

From reading what those who were there had to say, they didn’t intend to take pics at the finale, but the press rushed the stage from both sides, so people began shooting also. The video is from a cell phone, not a camera.

The best pics are from the Planet Hollywood party for Taylor after the show, where his handprints and print of his harp were placed in clay. The cast was there and posed for pics with him. It’s nice to see some positive attention directed his way – whether he gets “reviewed” or not. He looks happy as can be, and he’ll be singing on R&K on Friday. I’d venture a guess that he’ll be with the cast at the Tony Awards next week.

For my money, Kellie Pickler is way more talented than Taylor Swift. I just don’t care for her at all.

  • Chicago-sally

What i’ve seen of Taylor Swift, she’s a cheap looking blond mediocre singer. She’s not even in the same league as Britney Spears or Mylie what’s her name.

  • smartcookie

I read somewhere that Carrie Underwood said that she, Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler were all best pals and hung around together all the time. I thought it was kind of sweet for someone as big as Carrie to pal around with what in some ways seem to be later, lesser versions of her.

I wonder how Cookie will do with the national anthem. I’m sure he’ll be fine, but it doesn’t seem like the world’s best match. Oh well. At least he gets to see what should be a really hot game.

I was watching my White Sox beat up on his Royals last week and it actually made me feel sort of guilty. That’s just sad. David Cook, get out of my head!

  • skylight1219

I do have to agree with Simon (Lordy, I should have my head examined), but, Kellie Pickler is light years ahead of Carrie Underwood when it comes to personality.

  • Thea

MJ (or someone) can you please post the NBA finals anthem performance once it’s done? I know all America will watch it live on ABC, but we can’t in the foreign lands… Thanks!

  • JOJOSIE

I watched lots of Idols sing the National Anthem and I think Cook ought to do fantastic as he has a great range. MIchael Johns is on u=tube singing the National Anthem in Chicago and does a good job. It’s a hard song but they manage to pull it off most time.

  • Thea

….but MJ’s Australian! I think I would feel weird singing another country’s anthem. He has lived in the US for a while though

I disagree. After he nailed Music of The Night, Yo Face, and the stupid rainbow song I’m convinced any song is a good match for him. The question is will he Cookify it or pull out his theatre boy voice and glorynote it? I’m excited! Being the sports nut he is this has to be surreal for him.

  • Jolene

The question is will he Cookify it or pull out his theatre boy voice and glorynote it? Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m excited!

So am I! Could DC really Cookify the National Anthem? It seems unlikely to me… But I guess just by singing it with his voice and intonation it would be “his own”.
Can’t wait to hear him sing it!

  • Jenn_AI Fan

Smart money says that he’ll largely play it straight. Not only is it the National Anthem, but first time doing it at a pro event and at the NBA finals—yeah, I think it will be pretty much straight up.

Kellie and Taylor Swift became best buds on their Paisley tour. Kellie said in an interview she feels like her name is Kellie Swift since shes like part of their family now. One of the Nashville papers had a pic of Carrie, Kellie, Taylor standing and cheering on the Nashville hockey team when Kellie was dating one of the players. The caption called them country’s 3 blonde powerhouses. Taylor S. said that Carrie is out of town a lot but hangs with them when she can. Taylor and Kellie wrote the exboyfriend song that they are dueting on Kellie’s new album. I agree that Taylor S can’t sing a lick. She writes good tween songs and can’t imagine her ever getting top female vocalist. Her cd sales earned her top new female artist award. Taylor and Kellie are well liked by nashville stars due to their personality. Carrie is shy and you hear her singing praised but not her personality. I think Carrie has had to win the respect of nashville but has done so. Its a shame that shyness gets mistaken for aloofness, etc.

  • Layla

Have no doubt that DC will sing the National Anthem beautifully. I bet he will sing it “straight” but will slightly cookify the last glory note.

    Can’t wait to hear/see it!

They often get the same person sing both national anthems when Americans and Canadian teams play in the same baseball, basketball or hockey games (MLB, NBA and NHL).

It seems really odd to me that people would think it odd to be able to sing a national anthem from another country. It happens all the time. You don’t have to pass a citizenship test before you are allowed to do it.

When Brad Paisley played our 10,000 seat amphitheatre (and packed it with SRO)
Kellie and Taylor S and a guy opened for him. All 3 openers did 30 minute sets.
Kellie was last and the definite crowd favorite. She got much more from the crowd than Taylor S. Yet Taylor S seems to be country’s sweetheart right now winning
the new artist award and getting kudos from everywhere.

I’m glad the 3 of them are friends as the blondes are taking over country music and now comes JULIANNE HOUGH opening for Brad this summer. Opening for Brad seems to have a magic touch so Julianne will probably be country’s next blonde sweetheart.
