Another Book on the Way From Ellen Degeneres

The book publishing industry may be in a slump, but not when it comes to celebrity authors. The comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has signed a deal with Grand Central Publishing, part of the Hachette Book Group, to write her third book, “a look at her life through her humor,” the publisher said on Sunday. The book is scheduled for publication in the fall. “I found that between my talk show, ‘American Idol’ and my late-night blogging, I didn’t have enough ways to express myself,” Ms. DeGeneres said in a statement. Her first two books were best sellers.

American Idol Contestants to Go Shirtless on Tour?

Aaron, who’s only 17 years old, told us, “We are going to keep it in our comfort zones. I know we are all performing songs that fit us as artists. I’m really excited. Mine is going to be more of a country themed, I see myself in the modern route of country. Everyone is doing songs they feel really comfortable with.”

So we had a little fun with them, and proposed a shirtless number! Tim immediately nominated Aaron for the job. “Aaron Kelly is taking his shirt off on tour,” he joked with us.

‘American Idol’ Contestant Didi Benami on Her Tattoo, Writing New Songs and Brooke White

What are you going to be performing?
One of the songs I’m going to be doing is ‘Terrified.’ I don’t know if I’m allowed to say the second one yet. I can only say one! I will be doing ‘Terrified.’

Would you do a duet on tour?
It’s difficult, because, technically, we can only go on in the order we were eliminated and the other people can’t come out … I would have wanted to, but technically, unless I come into somebody else’s set, I can’t sing with anybody. I wanted people to come sing with me, but then I’d have to wait to do my set, and then it’d be a mess … I really, really wanted to get that together. I wanted Crystal [Bowersox] to come on and play guitar with me … But that’s OK. It’ll still be a good show.

TV Guide Celebrity Interviews: American Idol: Lee DeWyze

Kris Allen plays Nashville

Kris Allen played Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom Monday night. With the 1,100-capacity room about half full, maybe a little more, and the audience comfortably spaced, American Idol’s Season 8 winner opened with the riff-heavy Can’t Stay Away, then followed with a version of Heartless, combined these days with Gangster’s Paradise, that has a tougher, leaner feel than his early versions of the song. Both songs provided some punch from an act that’s often associated with his quieter, acoustic performances.

For glam ‘Idol,’ his 15 minutes of fame still ticking

Factions of the pop-music scene have grown steadily hysterical in recent months, making over-the-top dynamics an instant means, not a hard-earned end, so much so that the glitter and gossip over a TV singing competition’s second-place finisher can be fast eclipsed by Lady Gaga video epics and impossibly well-timed choral numbers on Glee.

Yet Adam Lambert, American Idol runner-up, atypical fashion plate, seemed to pack as many thematic metaphors (and costume changes) as possible into a 70-minute set last night in the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.

Growing pains aside, Sparks shows promise

To survey the half-empty House of Blues before Jordin Sparks took the stage, it would have been easy to declare it over before it even started. After all, there had been six extra weeks to sell tickets since her April date at the Orpheum was rescheduled to Sunday night, and still the (slightly smaller) new venue seemed like an awkward overreach for the singer’s first headlining tour following stints with the Jonas Brothers, Alicia Keys, and her “American Idol’’ compatriots.

But it quickly became apparent that the problem was simply one of scale. Her handful of Top 20 hits (and the sizable number of tweens in attendance) notwithstanding, Sparks delivered a performance that would have shone in a club a fraction of the size.

American Idol’s Scott Savol Releasing New Music

Season 4 American Idol finalist Scott Savol has announced the release of two new digital tracks, Savol’s first release of original music since he placed fifth on American Idol.

“Beauty Queen” and “Amazing Love (Life Is Better)” will be available at digital sales portals on June 22, 2010.

Savol never went looking for fame. He simply wanted to do what he loved most — sing and perform for others. As a shy three year old, compelled to share his voice with others, he sang while sitting under the kitchen table where no one could watch him. Two decades later, the television phenomenon called American Idol has cured Savol of any remaining fears of public performance, gave him a worldwide platform to perform, and brought him instant notoriety.

‘American Idol’ Contestant Andrew Garcia on ‘Bromance’ Buttons and Meeting Paula Abdul

So both you and Paula Abdul were at the season 9 finale, and yet you didn’t perform ‘Straight Up’ together. What gives?
Everybody’s asking me that. I don’t know why they didn’t set that up. That would have been cool. Everyone in the world is asking me that every time they see me. They’re like, “Paula Abdul was there. You’re there. What the hell?”

Did you get to talk to her?
Yes, I did. It was the coolest thing. She was just like, “When I heard you do the song, I had a smile on my face from ear to ear. You touched America’s heart and you touched mine, because it was amazing and I’m so thankful that you did that.” Oh man, it was crazy. I was like, “Wow.” I love Paula. She’s amazing.

Do you know which songs you’re doing on tour?
Uh, yeah. I will be doing ‘Straight Up.’ That’s one of the songs I’ll be doing. I’m pretty excited for it. The other songs have a full production [with] the band and stuff.

Are you working on an album?
Yeah, I’m working on an album right now. There will be some collabs in there. My boy, Lee. We always jam together, so hopefully that works out.

Will you be writing for it while on tour? Will there be any covers?
Yes, I’m going to be writing for it on the tour and it’s gonna be cool. Usually, I play guitar first and then it comes to me and whatever I feel I just sing it. I’ll probably just do ‘Straight Up,’ but I have a bunch.

Decent reviews for both Jordin and Adam. The review for Jordin was better written where the review for Adam seemed disjointed, as if transitional paragraphs had been cut for space.

Both reviews seem to say that both Jordin and Adam are talented, they just need to define their own style. I think Adam has his own style, and is not mimicing Lady GaGa, but that is because I am aware that he has been in the LA club scene for the past several years and this is who he is. But I understand the critic’s viewpoint. I think Jordin is still figuring out who she is but I think that is because she is young and still maturing.

I’m glad Timmeh is going to be on the tour. I think we will see him on some TV shows, like Glee, in the future. Too much charisma going on there to be ignored. LOL!

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

The story of the on-line Daughtry fans gathering to attend his concert was sweet. In addition to providing entertainment, I do think AI also provides a social network for many people, especially women. I know I’ve seen that evidence of that from various blogs. I’m glad the article portrayed this fan and her friends in a positive light.

  • Tess

Kudos to Jordin for sticking with a tour that hasn’t lived up to (I would gather) her team’s expectations. Unlike Kelly who cancelled a tour that was selling poorly some years back, Jordin is at least carrying through.

For me, what Jordin is going through is my proof that “young” and “unformed” is not always the best road to success and that Idol really did her no favors by thrusting her out into a limelight she wasn’t really artistically prepared for. Having a great voice, alone, is never the criteria that should be the hallmark of an entertainer (see Doolittle, Melinda). I firmly believe that Jordin will grow and come out as a viable Artist in the future but she just isn’t a tween/teen pop star and to be forced into that role is pretty sad in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see how things progress with her and if she will “find” that something that will help her connect sooner rather than later.

Adam’s review was a strange read. But NYC is going to be the tough press, those are the ones I am anxious about.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

Adam’s review was a strange read.

I agree. It seemed like it was cut because it lacked flow.

Yes, the NY reviews are going to be interesting. I think so far, Adam’s reviews have been mostly on the positive side.

Tess, I agree with you about Jordin. Good on her for sticking with her tour despite the low sales. I like Jordin and I hope she has a long and successful career.

  • jpfan

Another good review for Jordin. And I’m rooting for her to maintain a career because it ain’t easy.

Adam review was interesting. I guess the point was that Adam also hasn’t really staked out an identity. And I laughed at the photo caption mentioning the Glamberts.

Concert reviews in NY are no more important than reviews elsewhere. It’s not like a theatre review which can make a show. Jason Castro’s concert got a rave in the NY Times but I don’t think that’s had much effect on his career good or bad. So I wouldn’t sweat the importance of NYC reviews.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

Jason Castro’s show got a rave in the NY Times but I don’t think that’s had much effect on his career, for example.

I think it depends. I don’t follow Castro so I don’t know if this was a one off gig or is he doing a national tour? I think if you can get positive buzz about your tour in large media outlets that is a positive thing. It can make a tour into a “must see” show. But I also agree, a negative NY review is not the end of the world.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

And I laughed at the photo caption mentioning the Glamberts.

LOL! I just went back and read it. I have a tendency to skip cutlines under photos.

  • jpfan

I think Castro was doing a tour. His show got probably the best review I’ve ever seen any Idol get in the NY Times. Great for Jason to get it but my point is I don’t think it’s given his career a huge boost.

LOL, Brian’s review of Kris’ concert is the one of the most neutral, non-committal review that can be written.

Tim and Katie have great personalities. It’s a pleasure to listen to their interviews.

  • J9BT

springboard – I agree. I actually consider it to be a write-up rather than a review. Honestly, I don’t know what the point of his write-up was – it was like saying there is a cloud in the sky without describing if it’s a big white puffy one surrounded by blue skies, or a large black thunderous looking one.

Considering Brian recently went on record as saying Bream was respected, he probably didn’t want to appear contradictory to him; however, he did go “out on a limb” and write positive things in the comments section in response to people’s questions/comments, and he did retweet positive comments by Chris Sligh, who apparently attended with him.

  • koshka

LOL, Brian’s review of Kris’ concert is the one of the most neutral, non-committal review that can be written.

Yeah it was written more like a news report than a review.

Not Idol related, but music related. There is a good article about Pat Benatar’s memoirs, starting out in the business. She’s got great advice, I’d love to see her as a guest judge.

That’s probably the single most important thing anyone can know: trust your gut. It’s especially important for young people because there are always going to be older folks hanging around explaining why they know best. I was young and inexperienced when I started out in music, and there were times I bought into the other people’s I know best routine. And when I went against my gut, the decisions turned out to be wrong every time. Somewhere deep inside, you know which is the right path and which is the wrong one. The problem is that so many times we start doubting ourselves, questioning, second-guessing. My advice? Get over it. Remember that this is your career, and you don’t get too many shots. If you go with what you believe, you will almost always be a step ahead of the game.
Now, if you do not believe your gut is trustworthy, then find some people whose intuition you do trust. Surround yourself with a few people who inspire confidence and run your ideas past them. As irritating as it was to have my label against me, I not only trusted my gut, but I had a few people around me who did as well.

That review of Adam was a WTF read but again they can’t deny Adam his talent which is not a bad thing. Most of Adams reviews have been really positive. I have notice that some reviewers are hoping for a BSC Adam from AMA to appear which I don’t get. Adam would get major backlash if he goes there and he’s work very hard to forget the AMAs.
I also sense they want Adam to not have any outside influences on his next album and for him to write his own music and to rock it out just little more.
Sounds good to me and I believe I heard Adam say he plans to do just that on his next album. Bottom line for his first major tour he is getting great feedback and encouragement to just get better and better.

  • larc

I get a strong feeling reading the Columbus Dispatch review of Adam’s show last night that the reviewer was distinctly out of his element with Adam’s kind of performance. He would have probably been more at home reviewing a simple meat and potatoes kind of event.

A few reviews today. The Adam one was a strange read. It didn’t flow with conscience of purpose. It almost seemed like it was a bunch of notes taken for an article but never made into one. I think the reviewer was saying Adam has the talent but is not really sticking to his strong suits or hasn’t found out who he is yet as an artist. I think he doesn’t understand why Adam has to incorporate all the bells and whistles or theatrics for lack of a better comparison, when his voices is his bread and butter and he doesn’t need to fall back on props to entertain. I think an artist can have both and I think Adam does, but can see that it is a honest critique by some. So it wasn’t a bad review It was a review of someone who would like Adam to be more a standard rock performer and not a pop one. At least that is my impression.

Brian review of Kris I think was good. I think he was trying his best not to be accused of Fanboying so he kept the adjectives to a minimum but all and all he loved the show from what I read. That is what truly matters. Brian a smart guy if he went to overboard some would accuse him of not being partial. (which is ridicules) The most important thing I got was after reading it if I wasn’t a Kris fan already, (and already owned all his music, yes the pre Idol EP/CD) I would take a look at Kris. So to me that is the best possible review.

Jordin glad she is getting great reviews though this one saying she needs to find out what kind of artist she is, I disagree with. I think Jordin is aware but that is my view.

  • sr4mjc

Z100 played IIHY this morning. Maybe they’ll add soon.

My thoughts about NYC reviews is there will be a larder audience reading the review, in theory anyway. It’s an opportunity for good advertising to a large population. A bad review may not stop the rest of the tour from selling well, but isn’t it the first stop where press is invited? And ET is there as well?

  • Mary102

ITA. I care much more about the overall impression of the reviews, rather than one or two city reviews, even major cities. So far, they seem positive. TBH, I was a little nervous that some stodgier (read older, and more inclined to be biased about AI contestants), would already go in with biases and “not get it”, or something. Then again, Adam got raves on the AI tour, and though this is much more theatrical, it is a similar performance style, imo.

I have notice that some reviewers are hoping for a BSC Adam from AMA to appear which I don’t get. Adam would get major backlash if he goes there and he’s work very hard to forget the AMAs.

Yeah, I don’t get that at all either. I think they want him to be the scandalous bad boy in music right now, but that is not his personality, and it certainly isn’t any kind of role he wants to fill at the expense of the music. The media are often simple-minded and one noted – they can’t focus on complexity very easily, and so the fact that Adam has so many sides to him (the vulnerable WWFM side, the sexy Fever and FYE side, the glam rocker SFW side), seems to have them all confused.

Oh, wow! – COME ON, Z100!! (fingers crossed and cherry on top). It seems the song is getting a lot of positive mentions. The vid is fun and the song itself, as soon as people hear it, gets a lot of love :-) It really is perfect for summer – light, fun, carefree.

I also liked that the Columbus review liked IIHY a lot and thought it was a highlight.

Re the review, yeah, it was disjointed and not focused. I don’t really take it as too much of a negative. They didn’t seem to really “get” Adam’s theatrical side, yet they didn’t really say too much negative about him either – they seemed to view him more as a “work in progress” – which I agree. Adam is always changing, always learning and growing and figuring out what works best – ANY performer should always be doing that (heck, even big artists like Gaga need to step back and re-evaluate what they’re doing from time to time).

I think the tour right now (plus the IIHY vid) are perfect examples of Adam moving LEAGUES ahead of where he was even a year ago, and putting out great, interesting, visually arresting works of art that use the resources he has at his disposal. That is, he’s not spending a huge fortune to launch the tour, yet he creates a great atmosphere with lights and visuals, and has great energy and flow to put on a hell of a show.

Similar to the IIHY vid. I’m sure he didn’t have as much of a budget, yet he rather brilliant chose to have his friends come along, many using their own costumes and makeup, and created an awesome vid that looks way more expensive than it probably was (espec. considering they’re all his friends).

So yeah, everything is a work in progress, and I’m sure he’s the first to admit it. If he weren’t constantly evolving, he wouldn’t be having the success he is :-) He’s a smart performer, that’s for sure. Ok, sorry, long-winded. LOL

I’m getting the same read as everyone else re Kris and Adam. Yes, Mansfield’s review of Kris sounded just like a news report, not a real review — didn’t say he liked nor disliked it. I wonder if he is going to make an effort to go to Adam’s concert when he is in Nashville. I still think it is hilarious Adam is playing there (not the same venue as Kris) and singing Ring of Fire. I bet Randy Travis and wife are staying far, far away.

Adam’s review was the strangest I’ve ever read. Apparently he either doesn’t like theatrical shows or theatrical Adam, or maybe both. People said they were hot and icky sticky. I think they jam them together at these GA venues. I’m surprised they don’t turn on the AC.

ETA: Oh, looks like they have seating too. However, the floor was packed.

  • BestAI

It appears both of Adam’s albums have picked up sales after the vid IIHY came out. Does anyone have the numbers? Now if radio would play Adam more.

LOL, I can’t tell if you’re serious or being sarcastic… she’s goofing off with karaoke! I’m sure it says nothing about who she is as an artist. Seems to me when she goofs off with her backup singers, she tends let them take the lead, like that awesome youtube of them singing Miley Cyrus’ The Climb. Makes sense to me, as seems to me a lot of lead singers tend not to like to sing too much when they’re “off the clock” since they do it so much on tour, etc.

    ETA: what abbysee said.

Awwwww she was just having some fun with fans! According to tweets she also did Sweet Dreams, Before He Cheats, I’ll Make Love To You, and What A Man. As far as what kind of artist Kelly is I think she’s the most versatile pop act out there right now. My favorite Kelly lane is soulful rock and soulful acoustic pop so I’ll always be wanting more of that from her. But I think this is just Kelly being a salt of the earth kinda gal. It’s like when she swigged tequila and did Sweet Child Of Mine with Metal Skool.

Edit: Sorry if you were joking and that went over my head.

Unlike Kelly who cancelled a tour that was selling poorly some years back, Jordin is at least carrying through.

Kelly canceled her big arena tour to reschedule dates in smaller venues. I remember this clearly, because I attended one of those dates.

Jordin did the exact same thing. She was to start her tour in May, but when dates didn’t sell, she canceled a bunch of venues, and completely restructured her tour. Unfortunately, even the moderated tour isn’t selling well.

Lastly, tours are big money. The decision to cancel a tour is not taken lightly I would imagine, and certainly not entirely in an Idol’s hands.

He was runner up of season 1 on our national broadcaster’s singing competition in 2004. He then successfully competed on various song festivals, he even represented Slovenia at Eurovison Song Contest in 2006 (We sent the guy that won that singing competition to ESC in 2005.).

The snippets I saw last night looked cute and fun. I guess it’s a live action version of Candy Land. LOL.

I have to say, the Alejandro vid is one I really have no interest in seeing again. Just too dark and weird and cold. And I like weird – but not weird for the sake of weird, and for a song as dreary as Alejandro. No thank you. Katy’s sounds like perfect summer fun. And I love IIHY too for being very different, but still fun and energetic. Not to mention, one of the first thoughts I had after seeing the vid was that it reminded me a bit of Twilight and True Blood, just the night forest vibe to it, and that is a VERY smart marketing strategy right now with TB back on the air and Twilight about to hit theaters.

I think Brian Mansfield did a fair recap of Kris’s show yesterday. His twitting shows that he appreciated the show and had a fun night. Seems that he liked much the Radiohaead cover:

Admittedly, I get as big a kick out of the concept of Kris Allen covering Radiohead as I do the execution. Works for hIs set, for sure.

Kelly canceled her big arena tour to reschedule dates in smaller venues.

Oops, sorry if I got this wrong. I only remember being very dissapointed when I received my money back. I just remember this was during the wars between Kelly and her label and that the press wasn’t kind to any of the parties during this one. And I thought the whole tour was delayed for awhile…not just that venues changed. Clearly other people have much better recollections than me.

ETA: I remember it the same way Wikepedia does…but they are often wrong: “Originally a large-scale summer tour timed to coincide with the June 2007 availability of the album, public career battles and poor ticket sales in North America led Clarkson to cancel it before it began. A considerably smaller-scale tour commenced in September 2007 and ran to April 2008, with the international legs in Europe and Australia remaining at arena venues.”

I have to say that was the most awkward and yet funniest session I had ever seen on Idol. The look on Randy Travis face when Adam said he used a Middle Eastern version. All Randy could say, it was unique. I have tickets for the concert at the Ryman in Nashville, so I hope Adam will do Ring of Fire. It will be like a full circle moment both for Adam and the his fans. I think that performance on Idol was the first time we truly got to see the real Adam and just how artistic and imaginative he would be. It’s going to be something having Adam actually perform in Nashville, because I really don’t think he ever imagined actually going there. I can’t wait to see what kind of press he will get.

Wow at that picture. There were lots of twitter complaints last night of too many people, too hot, pushing, shoving etc. One of Adam’s dancers even tweeted for people not to push and shove. I wonder if they oversold because it was general admission? It had been sold out for a while, but it looks like too many people to me.

  • Tess

I wonder if they oversold because it was general admission?

Unless the fire marshall involved with the jurisdiction turned a blind eye…it is pretty hard to “over sell” a concert. Only so many people are allowed in…that’s the law.

  • lorismile

Yeah, I don’t get that at all either. I think they want him to be the scandalous bad boy in music right now, but that is not his personality, and it certainly isn’t any kind of role he wants to fill at the expense of the music.

The Boston reviewer does have a point though. Adam did make comments about taking risks, pushing people’s buttons. We all know everything he does but for someone on the outside it does seem he’s played it safe to an extent after the AMAs. I mean, WWFM video, while I thought it gorgeous, is a pretty safe video. So I may not agree with everything the reviewer said, I do get where he is coming from.

Wow, that picture of the crowd at Adam’s show last night is nuts! Honestly, I have never gone to a GA show where there hasn’t been room to move around and dance; or at least stand and hold a drink. I’m sure it is all within regulations for the venue (they are really strict about those things), but that’s a whole lot of people crammed in there.

  • Studio57

I loved that video Chicagolaw! It needed to be about 25 minutes longer though, lol. I loved the close-ups of his friends ( Alli alert!) and he just is having so much damn fun it’s infectious.

  • Studio57

lorismile- i get what the Boston guy was saying, but Adam said that pretty much right after the AMA’s before the real fallout began. And the other thing about the Boston review- the guy wanted rock Adam. I think he even said KISS meets Freddie. I wonder when people are really going to realize that that kind of rock is called CLASSIC for a reason? I can totally understand people not wanting that voice to be “wasted” on pop music. i was hesitant myself at first, but really do we want Adam singing cockrock? I hate that stuff. Michael Jackson was able to rock out some of his pop tunes ( Dirty Diana, Beat It, etc.) I think Adam can and does do the same.

True, but I think responses to button pushing is more of a personal thing. The AMAs didn’t push any buttons for me, clearly that reviewer felt a push at that level, enough to comment about it. While ROF pushed buttons for some, Adam’s makeup and clothes for others (codpiece?) and the simple fact Adam is gay pushes enough for some.

I’m actually trying to think of the last time a musician truly pushed my buttons, I’m not coming up with anything now. Gaga is interesting to me, but I not sure I feel pushed by her either.

Today’s Ryan Seacrest interview with Casey James.

And I’m reposting this interview with Casey’s mom from yesterday since I’m not sure how many people saw the link. It’s an in-depth interview and provides a lot of background information about Casey and the Idol process.

That New Zealand radio personality, Ewing Stevens, also interviewed the guy from Wuli Records who discovered Lee DeWyze (it’s from a couple of weeks ago) to discuss the two indie albums Lee put out on his label. It’s a good interview in case you missed it.

That Kiwi should be considered to replace Larry King. He actually preps before he interviews these people. What a concept!

To me, it all comes down to the interpretation of the song and the moment – which he does so flawlessly, and with such versatility. So he sings FYE (not on tour, btw) and of course it’s more sexual and explosive. He sings WWFM, and obviously it’s quite different.

Other artists today are much more likely to offer more and more of the same with every song – like someone like Gaga who is basically in a trap where she has to one up herself each time with more shock and OTT crazy. With Adam, it’s more of a circle – constantly circling back to the quieter performances, then to the sexier ones, then to the campy fun ones – each one uniquely his creation, but each fitting the song above all else. That’s all I want from my performers.

That’s true. Still, the tour wasn’t canceled outright. And if Kelly’s peeps canceled it, they had good reasons for doing so. It’s not a matter of Jordin having some sort of stick-to-it-ness that Kelly didn’t. These matters are often really complicated and difficult.

Most concerts really aren’t selling well this summer. Kris and Jordin are playing half-filled venues that are 600-1000K capacity in the first palce. I saw where Rihanna and Kesha haven’t even sold out the Borgata and it only holds 2400 people. Adam sold this same venue out weeks ago!

It looks as if Adam’s team was smart to book him in smaller venues that hold around 2,000-4,000, because he is consistently selling out those venues. It’s better to have a packed or sold-out smaller venue than a half-filled larger one. (as far as the media goes) I’m sure those fans in Columbus last night would have appreciated a few less people! LOL

Eh let them stay far away. I’m certain that many of those that really knew Johnny Cash liked Adam’s ROF performance. Merle Haggard, one of Johnny Cash’s very good friends, really liked the performance and thought Johnny Cash would have liked it as well. Johnny’s version of ROF is actually different than the original version that was actually performed by his sister-in-law. Johnny changed the song by adding the sorta mariachi horn sound.

Both shows are sponsored by Bud Light. I think that means Adam (and other performers) will make more money than if it was not sponsored. The venue holds 2250.

What a good feeling when venues list their concerts and Adam’s is the only one sold out (even when he has two shows). Adam is sure to get many bids next year at bigger venues.

This Radiohead Fan can be counted as a fan of the cover. In fact is my favorite song that Kris is doing right now. The syntax of the sentence did make it sound as though the person relating the information was speaking for himself/herself and carried an implication of also speaking for all other Radiohead fans. The “all” wasn’t there, of course, but, and again it was in the structure of the sentence, it was a silent little ghost hovering in the air above the words. Perhaps saying “myself and some other Radiohead fans I know are NOT fans of this song” would have been a bit more clear and less volatile.

It really surprises me about Kesha and Rihanna having problems selling out venues. Both of these artist are on the radio continually and have sold millions of downloads. But I do have to say, I have heard both Rihanna and Kesha sing live, and neither have anything to brag about. I just assumed that both had enough fans who loved them, that they could easily sell out any type of venue.

Word. I like some of their songs on the radio as fun, dancey songs, but I have no desire to see them live. It’s not just the bad vocals, neither are good dancers/performers either. Britney Spears can’t sing for sh-t but her shows are great spectacles at least.

What’s the seating capacity at this venue? Is it GA, also? Those GA concerts look a little scary with so many people packed into the floor area!

  • girlygirl

That was an odd review of Adam’s concert. I’m not sure I understood what the writer was trying to say although it seemed like he liked the more straight forward stuff to the more OTT theatrical stuff? Is that right? IDK

  • YankeeFan08

The seating capacity at the Riverside Theater is 2,500. I don’t think it’s a GA venue, but I could be mistaken.

  • girlygirl

Also, count me as a longtime Radiohead fan who loves Kris’s cover of PA. As Mary102 said, YMMV on this.

  • jpfan

Rihanna/Ke$ha concert would probably sell out if they weren’t chagring $150 a ticket and $125 to stand. That’s a bit steep especially because Ke$ha’s fans can see her at big radio shows for a hell of alot less. Rihanna has her own issues.

The HDD article about tours especially mentioned the issue of overexposure for some artists due to radio concerts where you get everyone on the Top 40 for the price of one ticket. ;)

The Riverside is an older style beautiful theater venue. It’s not GA. It has 3 levels of balconies. Cook played there in November of last year.

Maybe their people need to rethink their concert strategy and pricing. Something isn’t working.

It seems to be hurting some more than others. Has Rihanna really done that many of these radio shows? Some acts seem to be at every radio event and some show up at just a few. I haven’t really been keeping up with Rihanna- I just don’t remember seeing her name over and over like some of the others.

  • delacarpa

Wow at that picture. There were lots of twitter complaints last night of too many people, too hot, pushing, shoving etc. One of Adam’s dancers even tweeted for people not to push and shove. I wonder if they oversold because it was general admission? It had been sold out for a while, but it looks like too many people to me.

Someone tweeted that most everyone was on the floor standing and weren’t sitting where their were seats avalaible. Thinking they wanted to be closer to the stage. So were there seats and not being used and security didn’t do anything?

  • sr4mjc

I was just hunting around Live Nation’s site, since they aren’t charging fees right now. The Rhianna/Ke$ha concert in Tampa is 25.75-95.75, there are tons of seats left. The Top 40 station is giving away tons of tickets. The ampitheater is pretty large, if you count the lawn area, it rarely sells out. I think Jimmy Buffett and Def Leppard were the last big sell outs.

Yeah, I get the reviewer’s point, but when I read that review what I thought was “does Adam have to kiss a man everytime now, even if it doesn’t fit the song, otherwise he’s “playing it safe”? Does all pop music videos have to have blatant displays of sexuality, otherwise they are buble gum music videos made to please teens and their moms? I mean, I’m not offended at all by sexuality, but I can apreciate and be very entertained by a video like IIHY, that is just fun. I think it fits the song.

That’s crazy, to charge that much, especially when people are going through some tough times. Your right about Kesha, she shows up at a lot of the big radio shows. Why pay big money just to see her with Rihanna.

Even Justin Bieber’s highest ticket price at The Staples Center is $66 (starts @$39), not counting the VIP tickets.

Bieber’s selling tickets at another arena relatively close to where we live @ 29.50-49.50. So, ticket prices can be lowered considerably.

I don’t think it’s the fact that Rihanna is in a bit of a slump, I think part of the problems is that both Rihanna and Kesha are both just overexposed. You hear them all of the time on the radio, they are on all of the award shows and in practically every magazine. People just might be tired of them. Plus neither one of them give good live performances. Why pay to see them lip sync to a backing track.

  • BestAI

OK, I just looked at The Staples Center for Rihanna, and her tickets are going for 19.75 – 99.75. I don’t get the lower end tickets are lower than Bieber’s, but the higher end are higher than Bieber’s.

If and when Adam does any arena shows in the future, I can see him charging Bieber prices.

    .

I don’t think rihanna is in a slump — her cd went platinum and has spawned several hits. And kesha wouldn’t be selling any better as the headliner of arena shows. I just think rihanna booked venues that were too big for her. Some artists simply are not huge concert draws, no matter how many radio hits they have; some artists do fabulously as touring acts/people love seeing them live, but are not radio hitmakers. Some artists are both.

  • standtotheright

I rather like Ri-Ri, and while I think she’s not a great live performer, she’s not nearly as bad as popular commentary would suggest. But I have yet to pay over $100 to see anyone, and she would not be the artist to break my streak. Those prices need to come way down. (I guess $20 for nosebleed seats isn’t bad, but there are so many small club shows I can see for that price that include artists I’d rather see.)

And count me as someone who likes KA and likes Radiohead but prefers the idea of KAB covering Radiohead to the actuality. But some songs need more time to gel in a live setting; maybe after he’s been on tour for a few more months I’ll give it another shot.

I didn’t know both shows were sponsored by Bud Light! Good for Adam! Maybe he will start getting more sponsors since he isn’t having problems selling tickets to his concerts.

Quite a few of Adam’s concerts are sponsered by Bud Lite I think. The show in Seattle is too.

  • Studio57

God I loved that Autostraddle article. Half the articles I have read about the video have almost been as fun as the video itself. Love that I wasn’t the only one to catch the Lost Boys references. The one part where he glides around the tree in the video is straight out of the movie I think.

  • Mary102

It really surprises me about Kesha and Rihanna having problems selling out venues. Both of these artist are on the radio continually and have sold millions of downloads. But I do have to say, I have heard both Rihanna and Kesha sing live, and neither have anything to brag about. I just assumed that both had enough fans who loved them, that they could easily sell out any type of venue.

Yeah, I think this speaks to how some artists just aren’t as much of a draw live as they are on the radio or with cd sales. Kesha doesn’t have the best reputation in her early appearances in terms of putting on a spectacular live show. AI was panned, SNL was panned, her live voice isn’t really very good, and online she gets clobbered on the message boards. She definitely has popular music that sells well, but I think she’s an example of someone who is much better at selling the radio hits than a live show. People would rather play Tik Tok on their ipod then necessarily see her perform it live in an indian headdress, or whatever she does.

Same deal with Rihanna – I’m not sure that she has quite the live reputation as, say, someone like Beyonce, who’s a much better singer and dancer.

  • Mary102

Quite a few of Adam’s concerts are sponsered by Bud Lite I think. The show in Seattle is too.

Correct me if I’m wrong (could be), but I would think the sponsoring means the sponsor is covering part of the costs, as in – like a producer getting investors for a show or movie, the sponsor would cover part of the costs, so the overhead would be cheaper. In return, they get advertising, product selling rights, etc.

I’ve been reading all morning and I am beginning to wonder if season 9 of Idol has taken place yet. I think that a lot of the Idols from seasons 1 thru 8 are represented…but no one seems to be commenting on season 9 or the guys who competed there. How in the world is the tour or any future albums going to succeed when an Idol blog doesn’t seem to care about them. I can’t remember this type of non-commitment happening ever before. Guess I’m not the lone ranger that thought season 9 was totally forgettable (the little I saw).

  • Masieta

Kris’ TT has 3 Top 40 adds so far and only 75% reporting… He got 8 HAC yesterday. Only 3 others were ahead of him with 9 (Lady Gaga, Goo Goo Dolls, Neon Trees) so that makes 11 total… Good news!

  • mskgandn

Seriously, I’m a fan of Radiohead and of KA, and I loved the cover. The first time I heard it on video I was really worried, esp the first bars of falsetto, blech. But when I heard it in person, the KAB all together on it, it was A-mazing. Probably one of my top 3 moments in the concert. It really works live.

  • ilovekrisallen39

Your welcome TwigLA,I thought it was very interesting and fun.

  • Kirsten

How in the world is the tour or any future albums going to succeed when an Idol blog doesn’t seem to care about them. I can’t remember this type of non-commitment happening ever before.

I think we have to distinguish between this blog and all the potential fans out there. While this blog does cater to a wide variety of Idol fans and fans of the show in general, I do think that it does tend to self select a little. Not being loved here doesn’t necessarily mean you are doomed.

Back in the day, Kellie Pickler got almost no news here (things have gotten a lot more balanced once we got a headlines thread…in the beginning, there was really just a daily thread). People were actually feeling sorry for the Pickler because she seemed to have disappeared. So, I did some trolling and found a wealth of information about the girl and fansites and everything. And it happened to be the day her video was coming out and we were all pretty surprised about that. She went on to have the second best selling album of her season.

Jordan also seemed doomed by the lack of chatter about her before her album came out, but it was a success. And frankly, we don’t much discuss Carrie relative to how MASSIVE her career is.

That said, this site does tend to attract fans of WGWG, so I’m not sure what to think. Maybe Lee is just blessed and he won’t get the fans going rabid (not to say we are all rabid, just that there is usually some rabidness going on by now and poor MJ has to throw water on the threads while others just pop popcorn).

I do think that the tour will likely be doomed. The $20 tickets and the 4-packs seem new to me and I don’t think they’d be doing that if the tickets were selling like they were for the last two year.

But, the albums push the reboot button. Put out a good album and get some support from your label/19Alphabet and that’s the start of your career.

  • cookcricket

Thanks for the info. on TT adds Masieta! I’ve personally never heard (or at least from what I can recall) RH’s, PA. (I know pop culture fail! ;)) However, I simply adore KA’s cover and I’m half way afraid to look up the original for fear it’ll take that love away from me because I might not like? (Sorry RH fans.)

To me the vocals and instrumentation on KA’s cover are just amazing! Hard for me to believe it’s even better live.

Guess I’m not the lone ranger that thought season 9 was totally forgettable (the little I saw).

I rechecked the headlines and there did not see anything on Crystal. She’ll always be unforgettable to me.

I’ll probably eventually get to Casey James’s interview w/ Ryan and the interview w/ his mom. May check out a few other things as well. I definitely have a new appreciation for Hanson due to Siobhan…

BTW, I was initially disappointed w/ BM’s recap of Kris’s show, but on a second rd. along with some of what he said in the comments I believe he was quite complementary.

MJ even linked to the Casey James radio interview with Ryan and not one comment about it. Casey is my favorite so I was especially interested but he sounded great and gave a few tidbits about the tour. I am truly surprised at the lack of posts about season 9. I always enjoy the tour reviews and posts on mj’s but I wonder if, by the time the tour starts in two weeks, just how much interest there will be.

Thankfully, there is still much fervor from fans of previous seasons to keep this blog interesting but I feel sad for the kids from this year.

I completely agree that (possibly) bad tour sales won’t doom the AIers after it. A good album by Lee or Crystal or whomever, that does well, will be all they need to get over all the ‘worst season evah!’ label. Personally I see that Lee has the best shot at this for a variety of reasons. I would be thrilled if both Crystal and Casey did well, as well, but I’m less sure of Crystal’s ability to do so than I am of Lee’s and possibly even Casey’s.

But bottomline, yeah, not great sales tour does not necessarily = not great album sales.

My biggest fear is that things won’t turn around in 2011 and that those who are non committal about season 9 won’t return for season 10.

I think that the success of the previous season feeds into the ratings for the audition rounds of the following season. It seems like it has a pretty clear pattern. After a good season, people don’t seem to want to miss spotting the talent out of the gate.

The ratings for the competition part of the season are dependent on the people that are cast (with a few external factors thrown in). The problem is that you start from a lower base audience if lots of people skip the auditions

But, if you and your fellow contestants can generate buzz, people will tune in. That is where I think Idol made a critical mistake in S8. They yanked youtube videos (and accounts) as fast as people could put them up. They even apparently had filters running to catch the clips from the show being uploaded. As SuBo has demonstrated, having a video that can go viral can do a lot to generate buzz. Imagine what the buzz level could have been if they didn’t do that? Anyway, they don’t seem to have been as diligent about it this year (and I’m sure they did it last year to try to move more videos).

I actually think next season might have some interest out of the gate from people who want to see what happens now that Simon is gone. It might also depend on how they chose to replace Simon, whether there is one judge or multiple gues judges, etc. But I do think this will factor into initial Season 10 interest.

I agree. If they cast somebody interesting to repace Simon, people will tune in. Or if they replace somebody who is not well known, but who can generate buzz, then they will do well.

After the selections of Kara and Ellen, though, I’m not sure if I hold out much hope for the producers. They’ll probably hire some no-name who drones on and on and says nothing of value.

And why don’t we know who this new judge is yet? Are they going to drag this selection on so long that they won’t be there for the audition rounds like Ellen wasn’t last year? The audition rounds are important for getting the judge invested.

I swear, these producers are the biggest procastinators ever. I bet if I ask their former teachers, these were the kids who were always asking for extensions on deadlines and had those mythical dogs that were forever eating their homework.

Kirsten – LOL! I thought they said the auditions were being pushed back to September so they had enough time to find and hire a new judge? So they still have a couple of months before the “drop dead” date, I guess.

  • J9BT

So Glee has the #1 selling album this week, and 5 albums in the Top 50. Wow.

  • sr4mjc

On one hand I think people might be curious as to what will happen to Idol without Simon, but on the other if they didn’t care much for Idol as a show with Simon, would a new judge draw interest in a show they never cared about? I guess it all depends on who they pick. Bret Michaels would not be a bad idea.

I’m an Idol fan. Sometimes I don’t care for the season, but I always watch. I might miss something ;) I still haven’t watched the S9 finale on my tivo from when I was out of town. I haven’t deleted it, maybe I’ll get around to it this summer.

i’m indifferent about s9, and find myself growing more indifferent to idol the show, in present incarnation, with each passing day. i don’t harbor any bad feelings or ill will toward any contestant, wish them all the best of luck, as i would any contestant willing to put themselves out there like they have, in a career path i would never have the guts to pursue, but that’s as far as it goes. no one grabs my interest enough vocally or professionally in this past season to muster the energy to comment most days, and i’m a believer in not wasting time or energy commenting when there is no interest, to kill time, or if what i think i have to say adds nothing positive, fun or constructive. and most days, s9 doesn’t engender feelings that fall within those parameters, thus the indifference. never thought i’d feel that way about a season of idol, i have watched and been a big fan of the show and the talent presented on it since the 1st episode of season 1, so i guess it’s just the natural order and evolution of feelings and enthusiasm to change…

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

And why don’t we know who this new judge is yet? Are they going to drag this selection on so long that they won’t be there for the audition rounds like Ellen wasn’t last year? The audition rounds are important for getting the judge invested.

At the upfronts, FOX peeps talked about moving the auditions to the fall.

This year, viewers turned in to see how Ellen would do. As soon as it became apparent that the season was a dud…that’s when the ratings took a dive.

According to Pulse poster, it looks like for the Billboard year the Glee cast has sold over 2 million albums. They have 5 albums in the current Top 50 totalling 231K sales this week alone according to HDD. The two Idols in the Top 50 (Carrie and Clay) have a total 28K in sales.

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

Glee has completely surpassed Idol in the area of music sales this year. And I bet the Glee numbers for single downloads are equally crushing.

  • girlygirl

Didn’t look to see if all stations have reported in, but the 3 p.m. Pacific reporting deadline for Pop stations has passed, so this is what we are looking at right now for Kris and Adam

The Truth – 13 new adds (8 Hot AC, 5 Top 40) (plus an additional unmonitored Top 40 station)
    IIHY – 7 new adds (6 Top 40, 1 Canadian Hot AC)
LLWD – 3 new adds (2 AC, 1 Canadian Main AC)
    WWFM – 2 new adds (2 AC)

No new adds for Danny; Allison got 1 new Top 40 add for DWTP (Salt Lake City station)

  • girlygirl

    jpfan

I wouldn’t be too sure about the Glee singles downloads outpacing those from AI. Most of the Glee singles tend to drop quickly on iTunes, since new songs from the show get added every week, while singles from the various Idols, if they do pretty well to begin with, tend to stay higher on the charts for longer. Glee’s album sales numbers seem to have a much longer shelf life than the singles.

Unless you are comparing the Glee singles to the Idol singles from the show (Top 10 week, Top 9 week, etc) — not the ones released by former Idols once the show ends. In which case, I’d say the Glee singles would, in general, sell more than the ones AI releases during the contestants’ run on the show…

  • Indigobunting

MJ even linked to the Casey James radio interview with Ryan and not one comment about it. Casey is my favorite so I was especially interested but he sounded great and gave a few tidbits about the tour

    Hey, I just got home!

Ecstatic to see Casey James news here! yes! Love him. He was as laid back and funny as ever.

But I do agree; its very odd how very little commenting on S9 there is.
Maybe that is normal at this point in the lull before the tour starts?

  • sr4mjc

More tour dates are up on AO. Atlanta, New Orleans, Texas.

  • mmb

decent top 40 adds day for both IIHY and TT…IIHY 8 top 40 , 1 canada hac; TT 7 top 40….more importantly for IIHY, it got 2 big markets Philly and Portland, OR, 5 of the adds were clear channel stations, plus sirius hits……so it is starting to break out of the small/midsize market, independent station track…..

  • jpfan

You might be right about the Glee singles. But I think they probably destroyed the S9 downloads even if they don’t linger on the charts. I just wonder if this is a permanent change and Glee is now generating the major album sales that Idol used to in the past.

I see 9 total adds for IIHY (including Canada) and 14 (total HAC/CHR) for TT. A good week for both songs.

  • girlygirl

I think that there will be a little more buzz on here about S9 once the tour starts. Right now there isn’t a whole lot to talk about with them, since the Top 2′s singles are pretty dead in terms or sales/airplay and they are all in rehearsals for tour. Once they hit the road, there will be the concerts to discuss, plus Lee and Crystal (at least) will be recording, so we will likely hear some more about who they’re working with.

It’s hard, because they are competing for attention with Adam, Kris, Allison and Danny all being out on tour and having new music either out or coming out, plus David Archuleta’s book tour, him and David Cook talking about working on their next albums, Carrie’s music (and her upcoming wedding), Kelly’s new music being leaked, Clay & Ruben going on tour together, etc. There’s a lot going on right nowto talk about beyond the S9 stuff.

  • Pam

Here are all of the adds for the monitored reporters now in:

    Kris (14)-TT (6 Pop, 8 Hot AC)
    Fantasia (13)-Bittersweet (12 Urban AC, 1 Urban)
    Adam (9)-IIHY (8 Pop, 1 Canada-Hot AC)
    Daughtry (7)-September (Hot AC)
    Bucky (5)-A Father’s Love (1 Canada Country, 4 Country)
Daughtry (5)-LAY (2 Canada Main AC, 3 AC)
Kellie (3)-Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again (1 Canada Country, 2 Country)
    Kris (3)-LLWD (1 Canada-Main AC, 2 AC)
    Adam (2)-WWFM (AC)
    Carrie (2)-Undo It (Hot AC)
    Allison (1)-DWTP (Pop)

yeah but last summer the S8 people were competing for attention with cook’s tour and archies concerts and kelly’s hits and so on and so forth….in the real world if the s9 folks are to succeed they will have to garner attention while attention is being paid to the prior idols and all of the other recording artists in the industry….right now there appears to be little interest (or at least little interest in ghe s9 tour), time will tell if there will be interest in the s9 albums

I thought it was funny that after they played the full song Elvis said they could finally stop playing that other song. The fact that they talked about IIHY three times in one day plus joked about being tired of playing WWFM seemed like a real signal that they were ready to add IIHY in the near future.

I feel so good now about IIHY. I also think Z100 will add it next week.

Isn’t Adam appearing in NYC soon. Maybe he is being held hostage by Z100 for another interview while he is there…you know like: Heh, Adam come talk to us and give us some love and we will add your new song and get it some good airplay.

    Just a thought.

  • Judee

Good adds week idols! cumulus and clear channel really came to rescue at the right time, right?
Adam’s schedule is starting to look really scary, if you realize that he is headlining all those shows. I think standard tour has like 40-60 dates??? I always thought that Kris is gonna pull Cook, now it seems it will be rather Adam.

  • Judee

i hope Adam will be on Elvis Duran next week. it was so much fun last time they got together.

  • BornToBeWildAFL

I hope Adam doesn’t do 150 tours like Cook did and I think he will not need to. Even though they are playing in a lot of the same venues. Last time I saw his tour schedule Cook played to the college crowds and had a lot of smaller venues on his tour. Also a good portion of his tour was not 100% sold out and some of the tickets were less expensive so at the end I think they will pretty much even out. I think 150 tour is too much and keeps you out of the public eye.

Man my friends and I got tickets for Adam in Kansas City because we didn’t think he would come to OK and KC was the closest place we thought he would play. Ah well. We get to take a road trip so I can’t complain and now we might even get to see him twice!

  • Milly21

Oh thank god! i was mortified to look at the number of adds this week because i thought they would be disasterous, like the last 2 weeks. the video really helped it a lot i think!!!

thrilled to hear Elvis Duran call it another hit. they probably will add it next week since Adam will be in NYC soon.

i hope Adam gets to perform it in a lot more places when he gets here to NYC. maybe a few morning shows. Plus he has the Much music awards soon which i hope he plays If I Had You to give it a nice little boost too.

Adam’s tour is looking nightmarishly hectic. 70 shows in a few months seems like way too much :-\ i think a lot of the same people who go to one show go to many other shows in other spots. I think they should have made the venues bigger. like the 2 NYC shows sold out in less than a minute. i know, i tried getting tix at exactly 10 and they were gone before i could hit submit. he should have tried radio city music hall. its about 6,000 seats i think? he would have been able to sell it out no problem.

For clarity’s sake…Only the first portion of Cook’s tour included college shows. By this same date last year that was all over with and Cook was playing pretty much the identical types and sizes of venues as Adam is currently. In addition, Cook had something like a 95% sell-out rate over the entire 150 shows, over a course of a year. Quite a remarkable accomplishment, IMO.

I expect Adam to do very well also!

ETA: I do agree with you that 150 shows in Smalltown USA was too much. It definitely took him out of the public eye for a while, and limited his other promotional opportunities. And I can only imagine how it must have thrashed his voice and health.
