Predicting the Trends of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

TiVo has made watching commercials unnecessary. Is it now trying to make watching reality shows a thing of the past, too?

Last month, TiVo said it would predict the loser on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by using its own product, StopWatch, which monitors the fast-forwarding and rewinding patterns of 20,000 anonymous subscribers to gauge viewersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ preferences.

The announcement signified yet another attempt to flout efforts by à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to keep its voting results secret. Predictive Web sites already exist, like DialIdol, which calculates the frequency of busy signals on the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s phone lines, and ZabaSearch, which tracks how often contestantsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ names are entered into search engines.

Erosion in young audience shows cracks in `Idol’ future

The fevered response to the latest loopy Paula Abdul episode, where she judged a phantom performance, just goes to show how “American Idol” continues to dominate television in its seventh season.

Yet while “Idol” is still a hit, it’s no longer necessarily hip.

You can hear it in the lack of enthusiasm in 14-year-old Katharine Bohrs’ voice.

“Last year I was really into it, and the year before that,” said the high school freshman from Brookline, Mass. “This year in the beginning I was, but then track started up and I have a lot of homework. It’s two hours long and I don’t have the time.”

“American Idol” singer’s next stop: Nashville

“You’re completely stressed out, no sleep, like you don’t have a brain at times,” she said of her weeks competing in Hollywood, but now, for a while, it’s nice to be back with friends and family in tiny Selma, training and riding her beloved horses.

“It’s been a long road to get to where I am. I’ve been singing since I was 13. I’m happy I’m finally there,” says Cook.

Grabbing up her momentum, Cook plans to take off to Nashville and see if she can sign to a record label and get her career in gear.

Her advice to blooming young artists: “Keep dreaming. You’ll eventually get where you want to go.”

Kristy Lee Cook greets hometown fans

It was easily the biggest thing that ever happened here.

“American Idol” seventh-place finisher Kristy Lee Cook came home and, ensconced at a table in front of Ray’s Food Place, she signed publicity pictures for thousands of fans, who stood in a line snaking around the parking lot and held up their kids to be photographed with her.

Cook, 24, didn’t sing, which is what won her fame on the Fox TV show, belting out “Rescue Me,” “You’re No Good” and “God Bless the USA.”

Castro hometown visit tentatively set

The tentative plans are to host Castro’s return at The Harbor’s amphitheatre on Friday, May 9, at 4:30 p.m.

This of course assumes that Castro makes it through another round of competition, which is getting tighter as former contestant’s voters are realigning their loyalties down to the four remaining singers.

On Monday night, the Rockwall City Council will be taking action to prepare for the logistics and scheduling for the visit, which will actually begin on Thursday. Friday’s afternoon event is the only public event scheduled so far. The City is also planing to designate May 9 as “Jason Castro Day” in the City of Rockwall.

American Idol’s Michael Johns hates name-dropping

MICHAEL Johns doesn’t want to name-drop, but after rubbing shoulders with Demi Moore, Condoleezza Rice and Rupert Murdoch over the past month, it’s hard not to.
Since his shock eviction from American Idol last month, the Perth-born 29-year-old’s life has been a whirlwind of publicity and A-list parties.

Johns has performed and partied with Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Cameron Diaz at a Saturday Night Live after-party.

He got the thumbs up from Rupert Murdoch at a party the Fox boss held for the Idols, while Murdoch’s wife Wendi passed on Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s best wishes to the fellow Aussie.

David Cook Speaks of American Idol Perks

The final four American Idol contestants took a little time off from practicing and enjoyed the perks of being an Idol. Syesha, Jason, David, and Blue Spring’s native, David Cook, received red-carpet treatment at Saturday night’s Cirque de Soli performance of “Love.” It’s a perk Cook said he’s starting to get used to. Play the video to hear what he had to say.

American Idol Final Four In Vegas For Cirque Du Soleil

When contestants get this far into the American Idol competition, producers need to do things to help the finalists balance their nerves. Saturday night served as one of those tension breaker sessions for the final four.

David Archuleta, Syesha Mercado, David Cook, and Jason Castro, were treated to a trip to Las Vegas over the weekend. The four finalists spent Saturday with VIP treatment. They attended a performance of the Beatles”Love’, which was being performed by Cirque Du Soleil.

McGraw, Underwood Cap Off Stagecoach Fest

The three-day Stagecoach Country Music Festival wraps up Sunday night at Indio’s Empire Polo Field with performances by Tim McGraw, Gretchen Wilson and “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood.

It was a mother and child reunion last night, when “The Judds” reunited. And police reported only a small percentage of festival-goers got out of hand.

  • Chicago-sally

Could Syesha be the comeback kid? Hmmm…or does Jason have the teen voters sewed up? One of these two will go home, but it’s all good because they made it farther than even they (probably) expected to go.

  • skylight1219

You know, everyone is predicting that either Jason or Syesha will get eliminated next week. Are we due for a shocking elimination?

Reading KLCs words, no wonder Jason was exhausted, and, made an off-the-cuff remark about ready to go home. They work them to death. I’ll bet everyone of them have thought or said the same thing at one time or another. I wish people would quit kicking him because of it.

Archuleta has also been dropping in popularity some lately. So, we’ll see what happens. I fully expect Cookie to take the crown this year, and, I don’t see that momentum shifting at this point.

I’m ok with that, I just want to see Jason make the top 3, and, maybe top 2. But, we’ll see what happens. Why does everyone assume that Jason only appeals to teens? Most of his fan base is quite older than that age group. I hate the pundits stereotyping.

  • t2

I think everything has been set up to crown Cook over the past three or four weeks. He would be the ONLY shocking boot at this point. I think they are only keeping Archuletta in it for the younger audience at the finale.

I am the mayor of the Grassy Knoll, so I think they have already inferred to all of the conestants where they “should” place.

  • skylight1219

You could be right, your honor.

  • calimari

Why does everyone assume that Jason only appeals to teens? Most of his fan base is quite older than that age group. I hate the pundits stereotyping.

I was at a family party last night & my 17YO niece asked me who I thought would win. I told her David Cook, but my personal favorite is Jason. She looked at me and said “Ewww! He’s awful! You’re just like Aunt Bev – she likes Jason too.”.
I’m 44. Aunt Bev is 54. 17 YO niece likes both Davids, but especially Cook.

  • skylight1219

Different strokes for different folks, as they say. There are a lot of older fans in Archie’s fan base as well. That’s what I’m saying, I wish people would stop stereotyping. In fact, the younger viewing audience seems to be in a minority this year, according to the media reports. They’re so fickle anyway.

I really believe they want a rocker to win this year, since they put so many through the top 24. IMO. I do think Cookie is going to win, barring any unforeseen incidents.

I know the night that JHud was voted off, Chicago was without power due to a storm. People couldn’t use their phones. But, she has done very well for herself, regardless. Simon gave her a really rough time, and, then wonders why she doesn’t kiss the feet of TPTB. All he could see was Fantasia. They had her targeted from the beginning. He wasn’t always nice to Carrie Underwood either.

Skylight: That’s what last season’s Idols said too. That they run all the time and don’t have time to properly learn the songs. That’s the chief complaint every season, but in the end, they stated they didn’t mind because they were learning a lot.

  • skylight1219

It’s a grueling schedule. Don’t they understand the contestants need a little down time to just relax before performances? Or don’t they care? yes, they learn a lot, but, a fresh mind, and, a little rest would go a long way toward better performances.

Sorry if this was already posted…

According to the Courier-Journal, who is “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks rooting for on this season’s show?

“David Archuleta. He kind of reminds me of Wayne Newton. You know, the “Danke Schoen” at (17). He’s a young entertainer. (He’ll do great) if he could just sustain himself when he tours. From that show, it doesn’t necessarily have to be music, it could be film. The show form is television. There could be ample opportunities (for him) in the entertainment industry.”

    http://soulthing.blogspot.com/2008/05/taylor-hicks-picks-david-archuleta-to.html

    Very interesting…

  • Tony

Hmmm…so from season 5, that makes two people (Elliott & Taylor) who picked Archuleta as the winner.

  • skylight1219

They probably like the tone of his voice. They are entitled to their opinions, even if I don’t agree with them.

Every one on that top 10 list is still working in the industry in some capacity. And, Bo, if he had been well, and, had better material would’ve been a huge success. He’s also working, and, paying the bills. Just because they haven’t sold millions of albums, they all have a post Idol career.

While the media was told not to approach the touchy subject at last Wednesdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taping, without any prompting, Paula made it clear she wanted to set the record straight. I can’t watch that video here at work, but I am wondering how AOL is defining “flop”. Seems to me that all those people are gainfully employed doing what they want to do and earning better than they did prior to Idol except for Corey who remains smack dab in the middle of an “Idol-Gate”. As the list stands (and without other information from the video) it seems random-ish.

Perhaps a better spin on it would be “Idol High-Profile Underachievers”, but that probably wouldn’t get people talking and get the hits that “flops” does.

Where’s Mario Vasquez on that list?

If the likes of Corey is meant to define that list, then it would be a very different list for sure. He belongs on the list of high-profile Idol disasters.

  • calimari

I read a news blurb a couple weeks ago where Taylor’s pick was Carly. I guess Archie is his #2 now that Carly is gone.

  • skylight1219

OOPS, I can make up a better list than that if they want to talk about flops. How about Rickey Smith? Scott Savol? Charles Grigsby? Julia Demato? Christine Christian. And, the list goes on. With the exception of Corey Clark on that list, who I overlooked, the rest are working in some capacity.

  • Tony

Just because they havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sold millions of albums, they all have a post Idol career.

Well, that’s a totally different spin on the feature. They don’t care “who still has a job”. That’s really not the point.

Whereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Mario Vasquez on that list?

Hmmmm…I didn’t even remember him. Maybe that’s how big of a failure he is. :) Not even good enough to be remembered for a list.

  • Trina

I think the big difference is those people didn’t win or get 2nd place or have expectations to do well. The only person I’d leave off that list is Bo, who I think for the most part did ok and certainly better than other runner-ups who couldn’t even crack gold. Yeah some are working in some way but when you get dropped because you couldnt move those units, you’re seen as a flop.

That article about Michael, am I the only one cringing over Diane Warren working with him?

Besides Kelly and Carrie, Jennifer Hudson is the most successful. She got a very good review in Sex and the City.

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,354130,00.html

Also, there’s a little rumor around that Beyonce was first asked to do the Jennifer role in SATC, but she wanted to design her own wardrobe (diva!) so they went with Jennifer, who also sings the title song.

  • Lisa

Tay, still love ya man, but I would never vote for DA. EVAH. NOPE. Tay saying DA reminds him of a young Wayne Newton is priceless. ROFLMAO.

  • skylight1219

But, look at that list again. They have Tamyra Gray, Who was 4th place, Constantine, who was 6th place. Scott Savol came in at 5th, and, Paris Bennet also came in at 5th. So, I don’t think the list is just for winners and runnerups. Rickey Smith, I think was 6th or 7th place. I think he came in at 6th, but, not sure.

Ruben sold over a million of his first CD, and, did very well with his Christian one. His sophomore album didn’t do very well.

  • GwendolynD

Could Syesha be the comeback kid?

What exactly would she be coming back from?

  • nomi

Mario Vasquez was the season 4 shoe-in for top 10 and possible alternate TCO who made the top 12, dropped out for mysterious personal reasons before the top 12 performance show, was replaced by Nikko, and got a record deal from Clive anyway. He managed to put out a CD which didn’t sell very well despite his single getting a huge radio push by the label.

Two years later his departure was revealed as being connected to his alleged involvement in a sexual harrassment suit brought by a staff member of the show.

Just dropping this and this off for Sarah and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m done for the (bad) day.

    Oh, my God. *dies*

Fantarding aside. I read this on Foxes on Idol today:

“Historically, the top four round has been the one that has produced the most real shockers on the show! Looking back, whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s interesting is this phenomenon has occurred every other year. And guess what? This is one of those years! Another pattern that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen in Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s six seasons is that when the top four consists of three guys and one girl, a guy is always the one to go that week. While weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve had an all-female top three (season three), thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s never been an all-male top three and only one year where two guys competed for the title. If this pattern continues, Jason would be the obvious man out, but that would not be shocking, now, would it?”

Can I get hopeful now and say little Archie will be parting us next week? I still think I could be hoping for a bit too much, but…oh, I can hope.

  • GwendolynD

I don’t think Archie’s going anywhere. Well….I could hope, right.

    Quote from Fanblast

*Almost $1200.00 in phones in just a few days.* $1200 worth of phones not 1200 phones, huge difference.

  • sciencefan

Yes, it would be EXTREMELY SHOCKING if Jason went home next!
He’s only been in the bottom once, while Syesha has been there 6 times!

I’d like to see him have the experience of flying home on a private jet and seeing all his fans come out to meet him. Just one more week is all we need.

And I’m thinking he’s going to have a stellar week this week, since the list to choose from will surely have songs he “knows” and has “changed” as he called it.

We’re due for some good old Jason style, since we’ve had two weeks of non-Jasonesque performances, but it won’t be unwelcome because it’ll be different from the last two weeks.

Time Life to release recording of ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’

    http://www.playbill.com/news/article/117393.html

In a recent statement producer Sher said, “Time Life and Broadway make a perfect marriage. Gypsy is a great American classic and Time Life is the great American entertainment company, and what better team to reach the incredibly broad and ever-growing audience for top-caliber musical recordings.”

Time Life, in fact, will also release “Annie: 30th Anniversary Cast,” Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical and a recording of the upcoming 30th anniversary tour of Ain’t Misbehavin starring “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard and Rent’s Frenchie Davis.

  • jpfan

Why do you assume Taylor knows nothing about David A? I believed he was a fan of Carly when he picked her early in the season. It’s pretty easy to say you’re not watching or have no favorites. That’s what Daughtry did in a recent interview. I think Taylor is bright enough to do the same unless he actually likes David A. The comparison to Wayne Newton was really old school though. :)

  • sciencefan

The comparison to Wayne Newton is really lame actually.
I was a kid when Wayne Newton was getting tv time and I can’t think of any similarity at all.
Wayne Newton’s voice was SO high that on a recording of Silent Night, he sounds like a woman.
    David’s voice is husky.
Wayne had tons of charisma, and personality. He was really outgoing and extraverted.
    David is shy.
Wayne is comfortable in his skin.
    David is not.

Except that Wayne Newton was young when he started, I don’t get the comparison.
Donny Osmond would have been closer, yet still not accurate.

  • hicksaholic

The comparison to Wayne newton is what makes me believe he was speaking tongue in cheek. Taylor is not THAT old school. But maybe he really like David A. It just doesn;t seem like he would because David shows zero emotions when he sings unlike Taylor.
