David Cook on arranging songs, fighting the ‘smug’ label, and baiting cougars!

David Cook fans, the wait is over! In part 1 of his Idolatry interview with Jessica Shaw and me, the reigning American Idol champ admits he “put a wall up” for the first two weeks of the season 7 semifinals; in part 2, he gives a detailed breakdown of how he came up with his fantastic arrangement of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby”; and in part 3 (after the jump), the rocker dude discusses his transformation from average guy to world-class cougar bait! Rockwall rolls out red carpet for Jason Castro

The usually quiet suburb of Rockwall became a hyperactive screamfest Thursday as thousands of Jason Castro fans came to watch the city’s favorite son give his homecoming performance.

Teenage girls were nearly reduced to tears when they saw Mr. Castro and his signature brown dreadlocks.

“Oh my gosh! I touched his hair,” squealed 16-year-old Jennifer Walthall.

Jennifer participated in Mr. Castro’s free concert parade with her fellow cheerleaders from Rockwall High School.

Don’t Sell Out Like ‘American Idol’

Well, at least the right David won.

Although Fox’s American Idol got a lot wrong this year, and suffered a much-discussed ratings hit in the process, it nevertheless got the most important thing right: the singing.

And that is no small thing. From a business perspective, if your business is bringing the top new talent to the fore, then you best do that. The last two years, the winners were the forgettable Jordin Sparks and the gimmicky Taylor Hicks, which meant that Idol simply was not delivering on what it was supposed to do.

But this year, offering up such strong contestants as the Davids, Syesha Mercado and (my favorite) Michael Johns created a much stronger show.

Q&A: Brooke White

From smiles to tears and everything in between, Brooke White was one of the most emotionally charismatic finalists on “American Idol” this season. Billboard chatted with the Arizona native about her musical background and her dreams post-”AI.”

Q: Perhaps more than any other contestant in seven seasons, you have not been afraid to reveal your emotions on camera. Do you consider yourself to be a very open person?

A: To a fault. It’s challenging for me because when you’re so vulnerable; it’s difficult to have thick skin. Sometimes you feel like you have no protection around you. It’s just out there for everyone to see and feel and that can be hard, especially on this show where we have 30+ million viewers.

David Archuleta Defends Dad

(CBS) “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta says his father is a “great guy” and keeps the 17-year-old crooner grounded — as opposed to being the overbearing, classic stage dad numerous press reports have described him as.

Reports surfaced as the “Idol” competition was drawing to a close that producers had taken away Jeff Archuleta’s backstage pass to get him out of their hair.

But, on The Early Show Thursday, David told co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez his father is “a great guy. And I really appreciate his support and all my family’s support. You know, he’s given great advice, but he’s let me do my own thing. And it’s been great to have him there, just reminding me to keep grounded and remember what’s important.”

Underwood shows no signs of slowing down

Little things in life can seem so insignificant, but have enormous ramifications.

An unknown Oklahoma college student was so busy balancing her schedule, she didn’t want to make the long drive to St. Louis to compete in the preliminary stages of American Idol. The odds of advancing were astronomical and the thought of an all-night drive and sleeping in the car wasn’t very appealing.

Music fans throughout the world are thankful Carrie Underwood made a bold commitment to pursue her musical ambitions, despite major obstacles and overwhelming odds. She made the marathon dash to the heart of Cardinal country at the last minute and earned a trip to Hollywood, where she proceeded to blow away the field in capturing the season five title in 2005.

More ‘Sex’ appeal: Starry-eyed Jennifer Hudson becomes one of the girls

Jennifer Hudson was hooked by her homework.

“I watched every single one of them, and I still carry the DVDs around. I mean, …..it’s addictive,” the Academy Award winner said of the 94 episodes of HBO’s “Sex and the City.” Not a big TV watcher, she wasn’t a fan until faced with the prospect of joining the movie as Louise, a 25-year-old from St. Louis hired as Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant.

“At first, I started off just researching my part and then before I knew it, I was just watching it for pleasure. Like, what happened next? And I’m calling my sister, because she’s a huge fan.”

In fact, Hudson now thinks of herself as a Charlotte — “wholesome, traditional” — with a touch of Miranda, “very independent and strong.”

I know this is American Idol blog, but there is so little love for Jennifer Hudson and I wonder why? Has she so separated herself from AI that the bloggers just won’t give her any space while the main media does?

I opened up the local papers and internet news and she’s everywhere with SATC.
Plus she has 2 more movies ready for release, plus an album….talk about “stardom” personified….AI should be very proud of her.

  • Layla

Damn! The interview was just getting started and then it was over! DC looks and sounds exhausted! Is next week the last week for the press junket before rehearsals start in LA? Poor baby really needs some rest…his high blood pressure

Sad what he has to say about his personal life. If he wants to date/screw KC I hope he does just that despite the fucked up reaction of some delusional fans.

I really wanted to hear more about his music. JUst wonder how he’s gonna record an album and tour? Will probably be a pleasant relief to get back to the music side of things and among people (the other 8) he feels comfotable with and has formed strong bonds. I think he’s in need of some Carly/Michael Johns TLC.

  • MrsTrep

Daughtry recorded his album while on tour. Its the joys of the internet in the air :) I guess I should say they did a lot of work on the album while on tour, I don’t know the details of the recording, but I think on the ‘days off’ he did some recording.

Jessica seemed a bit uncomfortable admitting she dreamed about making out with Cookie, had to stand up from the chair and everything. I totally could have done without that. Has to be an awkward thing to deal with.

As for him dating anyone, good for him!! As a side note, he may not just be ‘getting a piece’ or ‘being a man’ or whatever anyone would call it. I bet he and KC have a lot to talk about both being involved in AI and stuff.

  • Pam

As far as recording an album and touring at the same time, Jordin did it last year and so did Blake. Most of the time, they go in the studio on their days off in between cities to write and record. I agree he probably is completely exhausted. I think as far as we know, the TV appearances are over but I could be wrong. He’s supposed to be doing an interview on Sirius Satellite radio this morning.

  • abbysee

Mj posts about JHud whenever there is news. That people aren’t actually abuzz about her may be that this is an American idol blog, and they just crowned a new idol. Or maybe two, lol. That is the big buzz, and that clay may or may not have knocked up an old broad via artificial insemination. That sorta trumps SATC I think. When she was an winning all of those awards there was more to talk about. She is 6th wheel in a movie that doesn’t even show her in the previews so maybe alot of people don’t even know she’s in the movie. At least that’s my take on it.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

I’m so happy that Jason had a wonderful day yesterday. He deserved it. He’s such a talented and humble young man. Idol may have thrown him under the bus, but he has such a strong character and values that it didn’t seem to bother him. He knows who he is.

I would have loved to be part of the homecoming celebration, but I’m in Tennessee and had other obligations. Maybe another time I will see my favorite dreadhead.

I love David Cook also. He was my first favorite until I heard SOTR. Then I was hooked on Jason.

I found a RollingStone.com link with D2. I can’t hear a blessed thing and it comes in very choppy for me, I’ll try it again from home, but here’s the link in case it works for anyone else who may be interested. Yeah, even I’m sick of the Davids at this point. I hope they’re both sound asleep somewhere. I think DC’s last known appearance is on VH1′s Best Week Ever tonight and then I don’t really expect to see him until the tour videos come in (well, except for the occasional TMZ video).

Parts 4 and 5 of DC’s Idolatry videos are up (best part: Jessica makes him refer to Time of My Life as “Magic Rainbow”) and he reveals some of the songs he’s singing on tour:

    http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/05/david-cook-tour.html

  • smartcookie

Some really good info in the Idolatry/EW piece. I love that he’ll be doing “Billie Jean,” “Always Be My Baby” and “Hello” on tour, and I guess “Magic Rainbow” was a given. The idea of “Barracuda” with Carly and Jason sounds pretty nifty as well.

The EW interviews, in general, were very thoughtful and interesting. He is honest (about not really getting the group numbers) while still managing to be mostly diplomatic. Once again, however, I find myself going, “Huh?” when Jessica calls him smug. Just because he said he didn’t judge himself by what the judges said, how is that smug?

I don’t think that word means what she thinks it means.

  • onlygirl

    He really is terrific.

eta — I went in to Amazon to check DC’s status on the top CD listing — and he’s got his very own pre-order button on my music page. Very cool. Oh btw — he’s up to No. 2 — yes, that’s No. TWO baby. Amazingly so.

I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make out what song he said he was going to do instead of Hungry Like the Wolf, I replayed it a few times but it just keeps escaping me.

It was “All Along the Watchtower”

I was sort of hoping to hear David do something on tour that he didn’t do on the show, but I can live with the “Cookie’s Greatest Hits” setlist he’s putting together. (Maybe I was spoiled by the Season 5 tour – the last one I saw – because there were so many songs that were new for the tour). If he’s doing songs he already knows, I guess there will be more time for him to work on the album over the next month.

  • AInoob

I know what you mean. I think while I wouldn’t mind hearing a couple of the songs he did on the show, I’d prefer to hear a few that hadn’t been done yet, maybe ones he wanted to do but wasn’t able to.

Some intersting news about the sale of Idol download tracks last week (interestingly, we must rely on the Australians to get the facts on US downloads):

Winner David Cook was most popular. He sold 942,000 downloads alone, or more than 60% of the total.

The 1.5 million Idol sales worked out to be about 25% of all sales last week in the USA.

Runner-up David Archuletta sold 323,000 downloads.

    After that, it went:

    Jason Castro with 64,000
    Brooke White with 47,000
    Michael Johns with 40,000
    Carly Smithson with 33,000
    Syesha Mercado with 18,000
    Kristi Lee Cook with 10,000
    Chikezie with 5,000

    Some new Download Stats

This is obviously reporting sales beyond the Top 200 since we only knew about 36K for Castro, 12K for Brooke and 9K for Johns. We had no numbers for Carly, Syesha, Kristi or Chikezie. Numbers are also a little higher for Archie and Cookie.

Can we get a “WOW” for Idol selling 25% of the download tracks when they were only available for half the week?

And, that means Cookie sold 15.7% of all downloads in the US last week. Double WOW. Go Cookie!!!

And Archie is no slouch with 5.4% of all US downloads.

“It’s really funny because on the show I got to meet Mariah Carey, and one of my favorite songs Boyz II Men ever did was ‘One Sweet Day’ [with Carey]. I remember I bought that Mariah Carey album, actually. So it was a trip to meet her.”

Cook also said he had an “awkward moment” with the superstar when the two met on “American Idol.” He told Carey that one of the first records he bought was one of hers.

“I couldn’t really remember what [the album was] called, so I said the one that’s gold,” he recalled. “She said, ‘Honey, all my records are gold.’ And I was like, no, the one that’s actually gold.”
