MDA Telethon Ends Historic Run, Urgent Fight for Families Continues – MDA, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, today announced that the new realities of television viewing and philanthropic giving have made this the right time for the organization to move beyond its historic Labor Day telethon. It will discontinue production of a broadcast telethon effective this year. MDA plans to invest more in digital and mobile channels for consumer engagement and activation. The organization will continue to share the inspirational stories of MDA families on Labor Day and throughout the year via digital channels as part of an emerging year-round plan to revitalize its brand, connect with donors more frequently, strengthen family support, and attract and recognize sponsors in new ways. “The decision to end our beloved telethon was not made lightly,” said MDA President and CEO Steven M. Derks. “In the last few years, the show was adjusted to reflect changes in viewership and donor patterns, and last summer’s Ice Bucket Challenge once again affirmed for us that today’s families, donors and sponsors are looking to us for new, creative and organic ways to support our mission.” – Read more at PRNewsWire

Crystal Bowersox finds balance in stardom, parenthood – Do you remember your very first performance?
“Susie Snowflake. First grade. That counts, right? I started out with school and county fair talent shows; on to cafes, bars, funerals, weddings … and thanks to reality TV, I headline shows in theaters and opera houses. It’s been a long trip.” How does the narrative form evolve in your songwriting? “Some songs strike like lightning, while others take more effort and time. I try not to dictate the process. I feel as though my best songs wrote themselves, I am just a vessel.” Do you write a lot of music on the road? “Writing on the road can be difficult with the rigorous schedule. I get a lot of ideas while traveling, and I make sure to write them down or make a voice memo so that when I am home, I can follow up.” – Read more at AuburnJournal.com

Inside Simon Cowell and Howard Stern’s Feud – and What Ended It – And an AGT insider confirms to PEOPLE that NBC did discuss replacing Stern with the former X Factor mentor in the event that Stern did not want to return for the show’s 10th season. “There were a lot of conversations going on because Howard didn’t look like he was coming back,” the insider says of the negotiations that went on last fall. “It’s a huge show and you have to make alternative plans if one of the key players isn’t sure if he’s returning. Simon was an obvious call to make. But even before Howard made his decision to return, Simon had already said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’ He’s already committed to both his British shows, which film back to back. It just wouldn’t have worked.” Catching wind of the misinformation Stern had received, Cowell – who owns and is an executive producer on the top-rated NBC summer talent show – quickly reached out to remedy the situation. – Read more at People
