The Biz: Why American Idol’s Ratings Are Falling – Not so long ago, the annual arrival of American Idol on the primetime schedule sent executives at ABC, CBS and NBC running for cover. The ratings dominance of Fox’s singing competition crushed all comers and earned it the TV-industry moniker “Death Star.” This year, the execs have come out from under their desks. Idol is no longer the most watched primetime show — in recent weeks, thanks to NBC’s The Voice, it hasn’t even ranked as the most watched singing show. “The Death Star is now more like a water gun,” says one former NBC executive. – Read more at Yahoo.com

Is ‘Dancing With the Stars’ rehabbing Andy Dick’s image? – America loves a comeback, but many fans of “Dancing With the Stars” bristled when ABC announced that troubled comedian Andy Dick was joining the cast for season 16. Is he really a “star”? After all, instead of his career in Hollywood, the 47-year-old performer is most famous for his past struggles with alcohol and drugs, a disturbing rap sheet and making anti-Semitic remarks. – Read more at Today.com

Wow that Yahoo article is full of negative comments about Nicki.

  • girlygirl

Megan sounds (and looks) amazing here :)

Nice picture of Taylor Hicks on the cover of the magazine. He is aging very well & looks so confident!

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Anyone know what’s going on with Megan these days? She’s grown vocally quite a bit. Last time I was following here (which was a couple of years ago), I got the impression she had some label interest but she seemed unwilling to fully commit because of her son.

  • dd999

Though this year AI derailed somewhat for many, especially I think families who found Nicki’s earlier comments not appropriate, and also what appears to be a deliberate manipulation to have only girls in the final, AI, I think, is still appreciated over the other shows because of its interaction with the contestants and the follow-up of them long after the show is over. Frankly I don’t remember any of the names of the contestants who were on the Voice or X-Factor except maybe the winner and sometimes the runner-up.

  • Nadine_Bitch

Nice song and love that quirky voice. She was stunning too.

  • Mateja Praznik

So, what’s going on with Disqus today? I have comments sorted by “Oldest first” by default and whenever I open a post, I have to manually set them to “Oldest first” again because they display completely randomly.

  • curly_yenta

Fantastic exposure for Taylor being on the cover of Las Vegas magazine. I have a hunch he is going to make that town his permanent residence for years to come. They love him there. The editor wrote a fabulous review of his show.

The Yahoo comment section is always pretty negative about everything under the sun. I have no idea why. Not to say that Nikki is universally loved, but just that any negative feelings out there will be magnified in the Yahoo comment section.

  • SaSa8

Great cover of Taylor Hicks. Looks good and obviously things are going well in Vegas for him.

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

Taylor didn’t let the Idol negativity get him down. He is a smart who stuck to doing what he does best…performing live.

  • Anny_nanny

Taylor has always been the most beautiful male-winner of AI.

  • Anny_nanny

I could not see new comments for some time. And I had to log in again.
But I managed to put more new “like”. Heh!

  • Larc

I love it! This sounds like some of the Memphis blues singers from 50 or 60 years ago.

  • abbysee

I usually avoid the comment section but curiosity got the best of me. The vast amount of comments directly naming Nicki as the problem is overwhelming. I think that may be an issue. Earlier in the season it seemed she was pulling in a younger demographic, but in the article it States the 18-49 core is running for the hills. Reasons for that are many I am sure, but Nicki must be looked at as well.

  • breakdown

Nothing in here about Lazlo on Kelly this morning? He sang Angels of course. Randy Jackson was the co-host. Awkward!

Taylor’s always known how to put together a show — glad to see that that skill is paying off for him.

  • elliegrll

It’s the internet, it’s what people do, so really not a surprise. Nicki is a very visible celebrity right now, so like any visible celebrity people are going to make an extra effort to anonymously trash them. It comes with the territory, but it also means that Nicki will just get more press, as sites look for hits.

  • elliegrll

just that any negative feelings out there will be magnified in the Yahoo comment section

Or the comment section of any website. I remember when AOL websites and message boards were very popular with bigots, and anybody else who was upset that other people’s lives are better than their’s.

  • elliegrll

I’m pretty sure that that 20% drop in both viewers and the demo is the same as last year’s drop, so Nicki can’t be the only or even the main reason.

Actually, according to this, http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/23/arts/television/american-idol-ponders-a-ratings-dip-on-fox.html, last year’s ratings were down nearly 25% in comparison to the year before. Last year’s finale saw worse ratings than any season, including season 1, and were down 26% in comparison to season 10′s, which didn’t pull a great number either.

I don’t think it makes sense to say that Nicki is the reason for the increase in younger viewers earlier in the season, but now she is the reason for why they have stopped watching. It seems like the show itself is the reason why the 18-49 demo has seen such a huge drop over the past two seasons, and nothing really changed with the show this year to keep younger viewers watching. Nicki’s presence can’t change the fact that this season has been boring, it’s a poor cast, and the directing and producing this season have been horrible. Not to mention that Nicki has been the only interesting person on the panel, not that people are going to continue to tune in because of a judge.

  • Mateja Praznik

Disqus must be the worst internet tool I’ve ever used. Everything about it sucks. EVERYTHING. Oh how I long for normal WordPress comments.

  • abbysee

Was it awkward, or just potentially awkward?

  • taylor

There are over 1500 comments already and the vast majority are saying the same thing: they quit watching because of Nicki Minaj. The comments sections have been this way for weeks.
Obviously, there are multiple problems with Idol this year, but the negative reaction to Nicki has played a part and is something that can’t be ignored.

  • Nadine_Bitch

I usually avoid reading comments on any article, be it in yahoo, Jared, etc.. because they tend to get nasty and so horrible to read. But I don’t know why I scrolled down this one and I’m expecting some negativity but what surprised me was that from the top to bottom commenter(the time I read)were name checking Nicki be the main problem of this season of American Idol. Every single one of them. No one is even mentioning Randy, lol

  • http://twitter.com/LexieONeill Lexie O’Neill
  • Nadine_Bitch

I know it’s subjective and all but for me it’s Kris Allen.

  • abbysee

You used a lot of words to refute something I didn’t say. I however don’t find her any more interesting than Randy, and less than Keith. I sm sure she wasn’t hired just to be interesting, but to bring in a new fanbase.

For analysis sake though, if she was responsible for the younger demographic, I guess somebody else is responsible for them tuning out?

I for the record said there were many reasons as we’ve gone over ad nauseum here @ mjs, but if the themes, and personalities of the contestants are under scrutiny, Ms. Minaj along with the rest of the cast should be too.

  • elliegrll

So, if Nicki is the cause of the ratings dropping 20% this season, what was the cause of the 25% drop last season?

  • girlygirl

OT, but…This news about the explosions at the Boston Marathon is very scary and sad. I hope that if anyone on here is in Boston or has family in Boston, that they are all safe.

Thoughts go out to the injured and their families.

Yeah, over 200 Canadians took part in this event too. So anyone from the T.Dot (Toronto), hope you are keeping safe.

Some very gruesome descriptions about a lot of injuries at the event. Tragic :(

  • ANNIEBA

Great video of Adam receiving the key to the city. “What the hell does it open?” lolololololol! He looks so darn gorgeous in that …interesting outfit. Adam has the best posture and he towers over everyone. Loved all his weekend looks and from some of his comments it seems he needed to get away a bit.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

MJ is in Boston. I hope she and her family are okay. It’s patriots day, a city holiday. School and lots of business are closed and people were out an about. Do we have any other posters in Boston?

A great interview yesterday with Stevie Nicks where she talks about the music biz today and at 1:13 –Phillip Phillips! She says that when she mentored Idol last season she told him that he would have been asked to join Fleetwood Mac back in the day.
