Jessica Reads To Grade School Students In Manila – MANILA, Philippines – Jessica Sanchez, the season 11 “American Idol” runner-up and Smart brand ambassador for the youth, marks her return to the country by participating in an outreach program on Monday, Feb. 11. Organized by the telco giant’s community service program for education, “Read To Be Smart: A Storytelling Session with Jessica Sanchez” saw the budding Fil-Mexican pop star leading select second and third grade students of the Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary School (EDSES) in Singalong, Manila in a story-telling and group singing session. – Read more at MB.com

Grammys 2013: Where lip-syncing is off-limits – “Since Milli Vanilli, the mandate has been made absolutely unequivocally,” said Michael Abbott, the audio director who has helped coordinate the show’s live performances for more than 20 years. “The Grammys only have live performances, no questions about it.” Grammy officials say the no lip-syncing edict came after pop and dance group Milli Vanilli was stripped of its 1990 best new artist award when the duo admitted that they did not use their actual voices on their album or in performances. – Read more at Los Angeles Times

Carrie Underwood’s Glowing Grammys Dress: All the Scoop – To perform the song that won her best solo country performance, the superstar donned a custom Theia gown designed specifically for the vivid light show. The line’s creative director Don O’Neill sourced fabric for the 4 feet 5 inches-wide skirt that had to be approved by both Underwood’s stylist, Trish Townsend, as well as the video team creating the special effects. With only three days to create the gown, O’Neill’s team worked around the clock, stitching together 10 yards of Duchesse satin, 100 yards of tulle and crinoline and thousands of Swarovski crystals onto the bodice. Meanwhile, the production team created the effects that were projected onto her gown, including sparkling stars, rose petals and butterflies. – Read more at People

Underwood Reveals Grammys Performance Secret – “It was all projection and it took a lot of people getting everything just right so the projection wasn’t [off],” said Underwood, who revealed that the dress was made special for the occasion. “I had to stand in the exact same place. I was actually barefoot on apple boxes.” Although she’s been a star performer since winning American Idol in 2005, Underwood has never quite found an occasion for which to sing barefoot onstage until Sunday night. – Watch the video at ET

Keith Urban’s At-Home ‘Literal Estrogen Nest’ Prepared Him For American Idol – Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson caught up with the country singer and the actress on the Grammys red carpet, where they dished on Keith weathering the “Idol” storm. “He adores [Mariah and Nicki], actually. He actually always comes and says he loves doing [the show], so and he’s used to it… he likes strong personalities. Am I right?” Nicole said. “I like strong personalities, yes,” the Australian singer said. Keith’s women at home (Nicole and daughters Sunday Rose and Faith) have prepared him for his women at work. “A 4-year-old and a 2-year-old and a wife, a lot of girls in our household,” Nicole said of how he’s coping with his “Idol” cohorts. – Read more at Access Hollywood

Katharine McPhee shows off a very chilly front in a plunging beaded top despite New York’s wintry weather – Actress Katharine McPhee made sure that she was centre of attention at Diane Von Furstenberg’s show on Sunday, wearing a long-sleeved white top with a neckline that plunged down to her waist, despite the freezing weather. Leaving very little to the imagination, the 28-year-old was careful to stay upright in case of a wardrobe malfunction while she dashed through the streets of the city to the Lincoln Centre. – Read more at Daily Mail

Fun Should Have Thanked Ryan Murphy at the Grammys. And Gotye too (And Phillip Phillips – When little known New York indie band Fun released We Are Young as the lead single for their second studio album Some Nights in September 2011, it went largely unnoticed, only garnering some attention from online critics and quickly fading off the Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at No. 53. But then Fox’s Glee covered the song for a pivotal scene in a December 2011 episode, sending sales for the single soaring 1,650%. The show put We Are Young on the map and back on the charts. The song’s subsequent use in a Chevrolet Sonic commercial during the 2012 Super Bowl pushed it to No. 1. Tonight, We Are Young won a Grammy for best new song, with Fun named best new artist. Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know, which landed the coveted Record Of The Year prize, too got a strong boost when performed on Glee in a talked about scene. (He also won for best Alternative album.) Gotye’s original had premiered at No. 91 in the US in January 2012. It wasn’t until the Glee cover by Matt Bomer and Darren Criss on April 10 kicked off a string of high-profile performances of the song, including by Phillip Phillips on American Idol the next night… Read more at Deadline

I would have loved to have eavesdropped on that conversation. I’m going to guess that Adele might have went off on Chris, but I think it was probably a combination of what he did last night and his past assault of Rhianna, that created this combustible situation.

Adam sounds amazing. His voice is just made for beautiful ballads. Unpopular opinion here, I think Adam doing cover songs once in a while is a nice treat for fans but I hope it isn’t going to be the norm.  I prefer he gets attention for his own songs and not known as someone who does cover songs. I think it’s a very tricky fine line when you come from a karaoke show and get media attention for doing other peoples songs. Artists like Kelly Clarkson can get away with it because she’s known for her own music but with Adam it’s to soon. JMO.

  • YankeeFan08

I wouldn’t worry about it.  He gets attention for his own songs as well.  For instance, he got a really nice press cycle for the recent Shady performance with Nile Rodgers and Sam Sparro.

  • bridgette12

There’s not an artist out there that don’t do covers, whether it’s a childhood hero or their favorite artist right now. When it comes to the media, you can’t control them or what they cover, you should be more worried when they don’t give you the time of day.

Almost every single artist — new and old — does covers.  They are crowd pleasers and don’t detract from the artists original music.  I can’t think of a single concert that I have been to in the last 5-6 years — both new artists and established artists — that haven’t included a cover or two.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Dang, Katharine.  Why?  That outfit does you know favors.

  • bridgette12

I’m looking forward to him going back on the non-tour, especially when he goes to China, Belarus, St.Petersburg and Finland. He’s going to have some surreal moments alone the way.

Good for Ace and Diana. I don’t get cable, but a gig is a gig.  :-)  Better than a wedding on tv.

  • mmb

who knows what Adele said.  But at one point in the show she took a smiling photo with Chris Brown.  That kinda disappointed me.

  • Niall

Yeah, not a bad gig at all. It’s not high profile but they can work together, travel to fun places like Las Vegas, and get paid to do so. Plus, it probably won’t interfere with other gigs Diana might get.

Re: Katharine’s outfit. There are times a celeb needs to tell their wardrobe consultant “no.” That shirt was one of those times.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

I can’t think of a single concert that I have been to in the last 5-6 years — both new artists and established artists — that haven’t included a cover or two.

The exceptions I’ve seen have been (a) very local indie bands; (b) smaller national touring acts in opener or midliner position so the set’s fairly short; or (c) extremely established national headliners with a 20-year discography of original hits. Even then, it’s not universal that such bands won’t do covers.

If it’s a national touring act that’s 10 years old or less, headlining (and often, midlining), I assume I’ll hear a couple covers. Audiences love ‘em, and it’s involving for the audience members who were brought as guests by fans.

  • curly_yenta

Why is Diana Degarmo, who had a nice Broadway career blossoming, to host a gossip-type show on the Hallmark Station for 1/2 an hour, once a week, that surely not many people will see?  Seems like a total waste of talent and she’s taking the wrong direction with her career. Ace is dragging her down.  He’s pretty much a no-talent who hangs on to other people’s career strings.

  • IrisandLilies

As big a fan as I am of Phillip, the credit for the Gotye song on AI goes to Elise.  Doesn’t anyone remember that tongue-in-cheek snippet they showed of Elise and Phillip discussing the selection of that song.  I thought it was one of the funniest moments on the show last season.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

Nice to hear Adam singing something outside his usual repertoire. I am dying to hear some new material though!

  • girlygirltoo

Pretty much every artist I know does covers at their shows. The fans love them, and it’s just another way to connect to the audience. Most newer artists aren’t going to have a big back catalog of their own music that they can perform live, anyway. If they are doing a really long set, they could run out of original material to perform, especially if they don’t want to do some of the stuff live. Maybe they don’t really like some of their songs, so they’d prefer not to perform them live. Or maybe they are sick and tired of performing  particular song(s) and want to take it out of the set. Or maybe their bandmates don’t know the song and/or they haven’t come up with a live arrangement.

Or they just really like some other artists’ songs and want to put their own spin on them.

  • Kirsten

I love Adele, but I’m sorry, she looked like a matryoshka doll last night.

That is why I love Adele- she is no upper-class princess. More like a Cockney fishwife that will light your ass up.

LOL. I would love to have seen Chris being taken down a peg or two.

  • Daytripper73

Being more of a Diana fan than an Ace fan, I’d prefer Diana do non-Ace related stuff too, but there was no way she was going to turn a gig like this down. It’s something they can do together and it gives her a chance to try something new. Anyway, the show is more about Las Vegas entertainment and not about Hollywood gossip.

Plus, it’s not like Diana, four months from her wedding, can commit to a Broadway show right now.  I’m sure after the wedding she’ll put more focus on that aspect of her career.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/HWRPW434YQTROZ3J5E4BSLWEYM H.A.

I do get why artists do covers. I don’t seem to have a problem with that but I get itchy when Idols do them. NBD. I also don’t get why a 36sec clip gets a whole news cycle. Really? Why not put out the whole song Adam.

  • bridgette12

He put out a 36sec clip because he’s going to save the whole song for the non-tour. He probably don’t want to anyone to hear the full version until it perfect and he has a concert audience in front of him to appreciate it.

  • bridgette12

Adele looked so bad last night, that I had to mute the color on my tv so not to be blinded. She was horrid from her hair to her flower covered shoes. Bad hair, even worse makeup, attrocious dress, matching shoes, she looked like an overweight, middle age woman who was dressed for a easter egg hunt.

  • asifclueless

    H.A. : … ” I also don’t get why a 36sec clip gets a whole news cycle. Really?”

  • bridgette12

  • DaisyMagnolia

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, did you enjoy the play?

  • girlygirltoo

Lol, it didn’t get a whole news cycle. It’s the usual suspects that love Adam anyway who are talking about the clip.

  • MellyPer1692

The clip is 36 seconds because that’s the Max length of a Keek.

Loved the clip, his voice is gorgeous.

  • curly_yenta

The direction of her career is going the wrong way in my opinion.  She had a thriving Broadway thing going and now that seems to be on the backburner in favor of working with Ace Young, who has a lot LESS talent than her.  What a waste for her.  Surely a successful Broadway role is more lucrative and pretegious than this Hallmark Channel thing.

  • girlygirltoo

I’m confused my that THR article. I don’t think Taylor gets a Grammy simply because he was on Jimmy Fallon’s album. It would be different if the sketch he was part of won its own award. But the Grammy rules are complicated, and I don’t really understand them all, so maybe he does get an actual award? IDK…

  • Larc

I think the music world would be a better place if more artists sang and recorded covers, especially very good ones.  With only new songs, none can ever get sufficient longevity to become a standard, much less part of a musical heritage.

  • standtotheright

But the Grammy rules are complicated, and I don’t really understand them all, so maybe he does get an actual award? IDK…

On the Grammy site, only Jimmy Fallon is listed as the award winner. And logically, if a Grammy went to every guest performer on that album then JT, Paul McCartney, Eddie Vedder, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Williams, and Steven Colbert would all get one too. I suspect the Recording Academy is not that generous.

  • standtotheright

Surely a successful Broadway role is more lucrative and pretegious than this Hallmark Channel thing.

Google tells me that she just finished her run in a pre-Broadway engagement in a show that has been mounted regionally a few times. If there is additional negotiating or capital-raising that would be required to take it to Broadway (which seems possible, given the history), then taking a TV gig now may well be more lucrative than waiting. It might have been more lucrative anyway. Even small cable networks pay their talent pretty well.

  • CSFan

I don’t understand why you think Diana isn’t working. Unless I’m mistaken, she’s had steady work for years, as recently as a couple weeks ago when she was doing the pre-broadway run of NERDS. I wish her lots of luck with her new hosting job. Like someone else said, why not do it? It’s close to home, probably pays well, and doesn’t interfere with wedding planning.

I do agree that working on everything with Ace would be a mistake if she turns down or doesn’t pursue her own opportunities, but looking at her long resume over the past couple years, she’s doing pretty darn good.

  • curly_yenta

I never said Diana wasn’t working. Where do you think I said that?

I said that I thought she was was taking her career in the wrong direction.  That she had a successful thing going with high profile roles on Broadway and she is now, it seems, throwing that away to working on a low profile, gossip show on a minor cable channel with Ace Young, who is far less a talent than she.

It would appear all performers have “usual suspects.”   A dedicated fan base is a necessity for performers to fall back on – keep them in the public eye during “dry” periods.

Glad he got whatever part of the news cycle.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Considering most the guys performing on stage dressed like they were going to the grocery store, I consider any kind of dress or semi-nice suit to be a huge step up. Look at what Brittany Howard wore on stage! How about the members of Jack Whites all-female band? It looks like the matronly look is in for women and the “what I pulled out of the back of my closet” look is in for the men. LOL

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Yes, I’m sure Diana isn’t turning down Broadway roles to do the Hallmark thing. Most Broadway actors have lulls between roles.  I doubt this is an either/or type of situation.  Anything that keeps her face out there is a good thing, IMO.  It’s not like a Broadway producer would turn her down for a role because she co-hosted a tv show.

As for Ace, I believe he’s quite talented.

Yeah, a lot of them seem to have media people who really love them and comment on the stuff they do. I just meant that this video isn’t meant to be something for a full news cycle complete with a promo push, etc. It seems more like  something just to tease fans — but then some of the media people who follow him closely picked up on it so now it has expanded outside of the hardcore fandom.

Ummmm excuse me, Ace has a ton of talent. He is an amazing singer and he has acted on broadway. If you have not heard him sing or seen him on broadway. Then you need to be quiet. As far as this gig, not to happy about it but nothing we can do. Him and Diana need to so separate gigs. Them doing this together wont work out to well but when your in love, you don’t think.

  • Niall

It’s a valid point. She doesn’t have the time between now and the wedding to devote to a broadway role in NYC. But commuting between LA and Vegas a few times to tape a show? Definitely doable. As long as Ace gives up on the idea that he has any business singing with her–that’s painful! LOL He has his talents but singing with Diana only exposes his weaknesses.

What the heck don’t Kelly and Adele own a mirror?  They are both great singers, but they are both on the “chunky” side and there are certain things they just shouldn’t wear.  They would both look better and be healthier if they got on an exercise program and a healthy diet.  They are to young to be packing all that extra weight.  Sorry but it’s true.

  • bridgette12

Adele looked shitty last night, but Kelly, what she had on was a lot better than the sausage dresses she use to wear. Last night for her was a fashion win considering what she’s worn in the past.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Their weight isn’t hurting them as far as selling music or keeping them from getting awards and respect from their peers. Kelly has plenty of stamina, as she sings the hell out of her songs every night on tour and has been working and touring nonstop for a year and a half now.

I guess Kelly could be a size 2 like Rihanna and Taylor Swift so she could wear sexy outfits for the men and dance around the stage and sing to backing tracks or lip sync half of her vocals, but that’s not her style. It never has been and it isn’t Adele’s style either. Obviously, there are millions of music listeners out there who don’t care if Adele is a bigger woman or if Kelly is an average size woman. People are still supporting them and buying their music.

Many of the guys who won awards or performed last night looked homely and like they needed showers. The Mumford and Sons lead singer is chunky and so is Jack White and the tall guy in The Black Keys. Funny how we never talk about the guys looking like shit (because a lot of them did) or we don’t discuss the guy’s weight. I guess it’s okay to be a little chunky if you have a penis.

The first line of that blog about the MB20/P2 show is strange because it reads like she is calling Phillip a mediocre artist…but then she goes on to compliment his performance later in the recap.

I lol’d at the very last comment about the DJ’s “South in the mouth” remark.  Not sure if Kris realized the mic was still on.  Really cute interview.

According to twitter the request song for Kris’ show tonight in Mill Valley was  The Eagles – Take It Easy.

  • ADRIANAARG1980

THAT’S TRUE, I THINK SHE SAW THE SET AND THOUGHT ABOUT “THE COFFE  SHOP ARTITS THING” AND DURING THE SET SHE LEARN WHO HE IS, A REALLY GREAT MUSICIAN WITH AN AWESOME BAND. HE IS ERNNING FANS AFTER EACH SHOW.

Adele has said that she’ll worry about her weight when it interferes with either her health or her sex life, and according to her it doesn’t.

Kelly’s, like most women, weight goes up and down all the time but she always seems to have enough energy and stamina to tour so she shouldn’t worry, she’s more fit than she looks.

  • opalruby

After reading all these comments curiosity got the better of me and I had to check out some Grammy photos. Good grief. Adele is wearing a tea cosy and most of the other women are baring much more skin than is classy or flattering. What’s with all the see-through/cut away dresses? Ladies, if we can see through it, it looks like the dress is wearing you rather than the other way around.

I think if Kris had gone the country rock route right after Idol, he would be a huge star by now. His cover of Take it Easy is perfect.

  • MellyPer1692

I don’t think Kris would have done well as a country artist. He wouldn’t have been authentic country and would probably do a little better than Gokey. Can’t see that country radio would have accepted him in the genre since he showed no country during idol. Hell, Scotty was pure country on Idol and still had some problems with country radio after ILYTB.

  • Valarie

Kris opened Keith Urban’s tour. That would have been a much bigger boost, if he had been doing a similar style of music. Take it Easy is right in Kris’ wheelhouse. There is nothing fake about it.

For me, anyway, that link lands on a scary Taylor Swift parody video

  • KelseyW

    Great news! :D

Now if only Haley’s management would send her out on tour. I really want to see her live asap. Kris too. I can wait though.

how do you know that neither adele nor kelly are on an exercise program or have a healthy diet????  Adele just gave birth a few months ago.   Kelly actually looks pretty great IMO.  Just because someone isn’t a stick figure doesn’t mean they aren’t healthy or don’t have healthy habits. The scrutiny put on women’s bodies is just completely unfair.  Now, whether or not Adele should have worn that atrocious dress is another story entirely…..

“Grammys 2013: Where lip-syncing is off-limits – “Since Milli Vanilli, the mandate has been made absolutely unequivocally,” said Michael Abbott, the audio director who has helped coordinate the show’s live performances for more than 20 years. “The Grammys only have live performances, no questions about it.”

Oh sure. I guess that as long as a singer sings live (sort of) WITH a backing track like Taylor, then that’s OK? lol

Adele looked like she dressed for some ethnic festival involving cow bells and steins of beer … so, I guess that’s about right.

  • girlygirltoo

oh no! sorry..that must be another video that person did. There’s a YT video of Kris’ cover in today’s headline thread

  • girlygirltoo

I don’t get why people need to get so dressed up for the Grammys. A few years ago, they showed up wearing jeans and t-shirts and no one cared. This isn’t the Oscars — musicians shouldn’t have to look glamorous. A lot of the outfits I saw Sunday look downright uncomfortable to me.

  • MellyPer1692

I didn’t say it was fake. I don’t think Gokeys music was fake either. I’m saying that Kris expressed NO interest in country music during Idol just like Gokey, so the reception from country radio would probably be the same.

Kris opened for big acts in his genre Maroon 5 and Lifehouse.

  • girlygirltoo

It’s a moot point, since Kris has no real interest in being a country artist. But I think he would have done better than Gokey if he had gone that direction, simply because of his background and where he grew up. He is a big Garth Brooks fan and he listened to a lot of country music growing up. Also, being from Arkansas rather than Wisconsin, probably would have helped as well. It may be a stereotype and it isn’t really fair, but it seems like if you’re from the south, country music media/fans are more likely to give you a shot, than if you are from a different part of the US. Kris has covered a bunch of country artists since he’s come off Idol, and he does a god job on these songs. But I wouldn’t want him, or anyone else, pushed into trying to be something he doesn’t really want to be, just to try and be more commercially successful.

I’m a nut for award show fashion and i dont EVER remember the Grammy awards being an event where people typically showed up in jeans and tee’s, especially women.  Maybe some men did but for the most part I always recall people dressing up. Do a search for any past Grammy photosfrom years back and you’ll see lots of glamorous dresses, suits and tuxes. The AMA’s and VMA’s were the more dressed down events.

A few years ago, they showed up wearing jeans and t-shirts and no one cared.

What? Really? You mean they had a year where it was Casual Grammy Year like Casual Fridays at the workplace? All the men and women presenters, nominees and performers sowed up wearing jeans and t-shirts? I don’t remember this at all. Which year did this happen?

  • standtotheright

As well it should be. Audio technology can handle multiple vocal feeds.

The photos in the LA Times timeline of the Grammy Awards indicate a period in the late 1980s-early 1990s when at least some attendees eschewed tuxes and gowns (the prior norm) for a more varied and casual look (though not necessarily jeans). But by the late 1990s, the event had shifted back to the kind of gowns and glitz we see today.

That was enjoyable to look at the fashion through the last few decades. Oh, the 80s! lol The timeline seemed to focus on only the winners of the BNA category. Am I missing where to look for more pictures from every year?

Like you, I didn’t see a big jeans and t-shirt fashion trend during any of the years.

Naah, you’re not missing anything. It’s a very incomplete sample but the best I could find in one spot in a hurry.* Using Google image search for random long-ago Grammy years was giving me way too many irrelevant results.

*Or possibly I was so mesmerized by Rod Stewart’s outfit with the red jacket that I lost all touch with reality.
