Sparks, 19, sang The Star-Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XLII in Glendale last year, as well as at the National Football League’s NFC Championship Game in Glendale on Jan. 18.

American Idol’s Fantasia Goes Back to High School

The American Idol star, 24, says she’s ready to hit the books and earn her high school degree after giving up the chance to do so when she dropped out of school about a decade ago in the ninth grade.

“I’ve been talking about it for so long,” Fantasia told me earlier today. “I have a lot of young people who look up to me, like my 15-year-old brother and 7-year-old daughter. It’s something that I really need to do and that I want to do.”

Hollywood round has been disaster for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

The Hollywood round is the eye in the “American Idol” hurricane: its intense competition, singing, and critiques come without the insufferable studio audience or the tedious elimination ceremonies that start later this month. But so far this season, the Hollywood round seems more like a tornado, ripping around randomly before destroying itself.

While “American Idol” found a groove during this year’s auditions, it lost all of its momentum in Hollywood, which was given five hours and four episodes this year instead of three hours and two episodes last year.

Catfights, Spotlights, And Lots Of Tears In Hollywood

Last night was the second installment of American Idol’s suite of Hollywood Round episodes, and it took on the group round, in which egos clash and lots of tears are shed. If first is the worst and second is the best, how come Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and David Cook all seem to be doing so well?

“A good singer from the very beginning, American Idol contestants have made their mark on the music industry giving this year’s Idol hopefuls a lot to live up to.

Michael Slezak, Entertainment Weekly, said, “There’s no better way to start an Idol fan war on the Internet than to ask who is the most successful Idol because the Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry fans all come up with their own numbers: number of singles sold, numbers of albums sold, overall albums sold.”

Um, Merle Haggard is on crack. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Carrie’s mid section in any of her videos. Nor elsewhere period. I do understand what he is saying about how poppy Country is sounding and many of the artists are rather interchangeable, but that dig was absolutely unnecessary and makes him just seem ornery.

Btw, if it were as easy as he said, then Kristy Lee Cook would’ve been a breakout star in Country – not dropped by her label. Heh.

9 Of The Yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s First Time Nominees, Will They Win ?

Interesting article– I wish they actually went into more on each nominee’s odds of winning, though– like with the Oscars. Does anyone have a sense of the nominated Idols’ chances? They mentioned the Jhud-Fantasia collab as one of Jhud’s easier categories. Is that true? If Jennifer and Fantasia win for that, that would be kinda neat for Idoldom. And I wonder what are Jordin’s chances? This may be anecdotal, but I feel like No Air was by far the most popular song out of the nominees in that category… but not sure if the Grammy’s will reward that popularity in this case, but it’d be cool if they did.

  • sma11ie

I find it hard to believe how all that happened to David Osmond and AI DRAMA producers won ´t show a little of ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Maybe it didn’t happen in an OMG DRAMATIC LOSS OF VOICE way. Like David himself said, it happened and there was “No explanation or drawn out dramatics. Just a simple finish.” If he was low key about his laryngitis, didn’t cry or drama queen about the voice, but just sucked it up and made no excuses, it probably wasn’t good enough TV for the producers who obviously favored the dramatics of Tatiana, Bikini Girl, etc. Unfortunate. I didn’t flove his voice, but it would’ve been nice to shine some light on MS to a big audience.

One more thing on that singersroom.com article on the Grammy’s:

Lewis, who released the now multi-platinum album à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Spirità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is up for her first Grammy this year after winning the UK version of American Idol entitled à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The X-Factorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Multi-platinum? Is that true, or are they talking internationally?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

As far as David Osmond’s laryngitis–that’s probably not why he was eliminated. I’ve heard about contestants advancing beyond Hollywood, despite being sick or sucking majorly the entire Hollywood Week.

I think the producers already had an idea at that point whether they wanted David to stick around or not. He probably would have been eliminated regardless.

  • jpfan

Leona Lewis had a huge international hit with her album. She’s def multi-platinum.

  • IGetCranked

I think the producers already had an idea at that point whether they wanted David to stick around or not.

I totally agree. Since they’re all about the ratings though, I think it would have been beneficial to keep him on. It would have been a nice little plant war. I actually ended up really liking him after seeing him on the show.

Here is his blog about his final day on AI : http://www.davidosmond.com/blog/?cat=3

  • sma11ie

Okay, the Leona thing was bothering me, so I just dug through Pulse archives:

    Billboard 200: 1/17/09
    56 LEWIS*LEONA SPIRIT 12,804 -60 32,027 1,407,356

I’m thinking they must mean international sales. Granted 1.4mill is enough for some artists to be certified double platinum (incidentally, GNR is now “platinum”, but this same 1/17 chart showed them at 500K… yikes Best Buy). But I just checked, and the Billboard charts has her with just a black triangle, and no 2 next to it. So I guess they mean internationally.

  • Caffiend

Odd that David Osmond waited until age 29 to try out. That was probably one reason he was eliminated.

Multiple sclerosis can bring on a sudden loss of voice. My MIL has it, and that happens to her a lot.

  • Niall

Fantasia needs to shut about about the GED and just go do it. THEN she can tell people about it. She’s been talking big for five years. She probably figures saying she’s going to do it will make people sympathetic to her after her multiple financial disasters and all those other missteps.

  • IGetCranked

True Caffiend. I don’t think the show would have been good for him physically. These idols put in long days and from what I’ve read, both David’s were very exhausted by the Finale.

  • Caffiend

I love Elliott…MJ, I don’t see this news about the new single anywhere else. Is that news worthy of its own post?

  • LK09

ETA- CAffiend- that is interesting about MS and losing the voice.

Maybe it didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t happen in an OMG DRAMATIC LOSS OF VOICE way. Like David himself said, it happened and there was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“No explanation or drawn out dramatics. smallie- I agree. David handled it like a man without begging or making excuses. AI likes drama. I wonder if they didn’t show it because maybe that plus they probably have some respect for him.

MJ- I agree that it is likely he wouldn’t have made it– he is older, married (better to have single men), the MS is not good.

I wonder also about a singer who is not sick losing their voice. It may be that he is not using it correctly. I have read over and over again from people who worked with David Archuleta on his album how amazed people are at how can sing and sing and sing and his voice is as good as ever– that he knows how to take care of it. The AI rigor is abusive, especially on tour.

I hope Fantasia is able to realize her goal.

According to worldwidealbums.net, Leona Lewis has sold over 6 million albums internationally. It may have been the biggest album worldwide of 2008.

  • lefty

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think the show would have been good for him physically.

That was my first thought when I found out he had MS. The pace at which they keep those contestants running could have been, in my opinion, a little dangerous. He seems like a really nice guy, but I almost felt relieved for him when he was eliminated.

  • Niall

If David Osmond truly lost his voice then how come he managed to sound fine in the interview that was shown on AI Wednesday night? It was the same day, just after he got the news, and his voice seemed fine to me. Sounds like he just doesn’t want to admit that he didn’t sing well that day.

  • psnax

According to worldwidealbums.net, Leona Lewis has sold over 6 million albums internationally. It may have been the biggest album worldwide of 2008.

This site sounded interesting so I took a look. I’m not sure how accurate or reliable the estimations are but it had David Cook’s worldwide sales for 2008 at 968,500 and David Archuleta’s at 650,000. Also, David Cook is included in the worldwide sales for 2009 (through 6/2) at 130,000. David Archuleta was not on that list (started at 100,000 sales). Seems that both of last year’s final two are making an impact outside the U.S.

The site also has many other idols’ worldwide estimated sales on the 2008 list. I won’t put them all here but I will say that a lot of them are doing very well outside the U.S. as there are definite differences between the soundscan figures and the worldwidealbums.net figures.

(Sorry if this is old news – the site was new to me!)

Niall — while I don’t disagree with you, I think Fantasia is flying blind. What I mean is she needs some serious management. She needs someone to motivate her. I wonder if she is open to suggestion? or is she just “too” much to handle as an artist.

I predicted a while back that she would be back with the Color Purple for financial reasons and it’s happening. But if she’s going to be taken serious, she needs to find some good management like the other big-star Idols have done.
Fantasia if you read these message boards — take my advice. Get a kick*a** band like Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones to back you up. Start touring the music festivals like they do.

There’s really no way to know when that interview with David Osmond was done. It could have been the next day. If they didn’t go on until 10 pm, I’m sure he stayed the night. It’s not like Idol is known for truth in editing.

Tatiana posted a blog, but it was deleted (perhaps due to a request by TPTB) – but VFTW has archived it:

Wow Tatiana really brings the crazy. I LOVES it! I can imagine living with her or being related to her sucks but she’s going to be endlessly entertaining until her ouster.

  • kbr

Michael Johns performed a song from his album (not the single) on KTLA today. Thanks to maja for the clip. The song is originally performed by the Bee Gee’s and it’s called “To Love Somebody” I think Michael sounded amazing! Again, it’s not his first single, but it will be on his album.

We also learned that Michael receieved a distribution deal from Sony and that the album is now scheduled for release in April. Oh, and he’ll be at the Grammy’s this weekend! Lots of Michael Johns news today :)

  • Jolene

Tatiana’s blog is like Syesha’s blogs from the tour times 1,000, with an added dose of wacko.
The only thing that worries me about her is she might become VFTW’s pick, taking away support from the awesome Nick Mitchell. I find him funny while I find her unbearable. She’s not the type of contestant you love to hate, she’s the type you just hate.

  • Niall

I think if Nick and Tatiana end up in different groups for the semi-finals, VFTW will support both. But if they both end up in the Top 12 I think it will be Tatiana all the way.

  • itsalleternal

But in this case, Tatiana wasn’t supposed to be blogging – once in the top 36, you are locked down tight…it may be a case for disqualification…Milajoy’s site has also posted it.

If she is DQ’d, it is almost certain her replacement would be a female who was cut in the top 50. Felicia, Angela and Leneshe are probably the frontrunners. We’ll know Thursday when the AI site posts the profiles…

  • Niall

I doubt they’ll disqualify her. Did AI really think they could control Tatiana? She’s a loose cannon, surely they expected something like this.

If she does get disqualified for the blog I would like to nominate Julissa Veloz as her replacement. She can’t bring the crazy like Tatiana but she’s close.

  • oceana

Not Nick linked with Tatiana please! He’s pretty cool, while she’s a total nutcase. He’s strange but in an interesting way.

I agree with mj that Osmond wasn’t dropped because of the loss of his voice. They just didn’t want him in the finals, which works for me. I don’t need Marie Osmond hanging around Idol. What next, Lisa from DWTS? (can’t remember her last name)

I’m glad Jewel is doing DWTS. I love her. Denise Richards, eh. Not so much.

Kudos to Fantasia for going back to school. I don’t care if she has talked about it before. If we didn’t grow up poor and uneducated it’s hard to know what that’s like. Actually I did grow up that way so I can relate. I can’t see putting her down for doing something positive with herself.

Welcome Back, Jennifer Hudson. You are loved.

  • Niall

Kudos to Fantasia for going back to school. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care if she has talked about it before. Except she actually wasn’t poor until she had a baby and moved out on her own. Her own upbringing was more or less lower middle class, not dirt poor. I think the problem was her father was more interested in dragging the kids around as a music group, trying to be the next Jackson family, rather than instilling a respect for education. If she doesn’t follow through with her diploma or GED this time she can’t blame her family or the school system or anybody but herself.

And she hasn’t gone back to school yet. She’s just talking about it. Again. Kudos go to her ONLY if she follows through this time.

Wow, from what Tatiana says in her blog, the AI edit may actually have been kind to her, rather than exaggerating the drama. Scary thought.

    Archie’s WAPE interview from yesterday.

    http://markkaye.com/interview-with-david-archuleta-from-american-idol/

    Good stuff….

Talks about MJ’s new album, Jennifer Hudson, Kara, Phil Stacey, the Pro Bowl, iCarly, pissed off autograph seekers selling his autograph on eBay, the infamous YouTube video, texting with other idols, and Dad. Oh…and his album and upcoming tour…sorta.

    Dear David,

This is a promotional tour. YOUR promotional tour. Get with the program.

    Thanks.

Thank you Jab, but being real, I don ´t think he will come to Honduras soon, he has to target the big markets and Honduras has only 7 mio people living here, 66% between teen and twenties, and only 1/5 of this young people speak english… and most of our music is latin root like regueton, salsa and cumbia… so anyone wants to adopt me for winter tour, I ´m tiny you can let me slept in the car and I ´m don ´t made lots of noise… (j/k)

THERE’S SOME FUNNY stuff on the faux talent show that takes shots at the real “American Idol.” Like the endless attempts to stretch out the suspense by the host before announcing who the winner is.

Like telling viewers the winner is — going to announced right after these messages.

“Another commercial!” Sam exclaims in frustration.

“And they wonder why they’re losing teens to the Internet,” Carly adds

    lol, I love iCarly
