‘Idol’ cut for spilling beans

An “American Idol” contestant picked last week for the Top 24 was booted over the weekend, according to reports. The reason: his father told a local newspaper that his son made the semifinals, a violation of the show’s confidentiality rules. Michael Lynche, called Big Mike on the show, was a high school football hero and his mother is a local columnist for the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, according to a report last week in her newspaper. The paper reported that his father confirmed he’d made it to the Top 24.

Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Jon Bon Jovi Join Simon Cowell’s Haiti Single

Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey and Jon Bon Jovi have joined the list of stars pitching in on “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell’s charity single for Haiti relief. According to England’s The Sun, both singers will appear on the cover of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” which will also feature famous Brits Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis and Rod Stewart.

“It’s amazing these great singers are clearing their schedules to make this happen,” Cowell told the paper, which is helping to organize the single. “I just found out Mariah has changed her schedule to be able to do this too.”

Carey’s and Cyrus’ participation in the single could not be confirmed at press time, but an Island Def Jam rep did verify the news of Bon Jovi’s appearance.

Our ‘American Idol’ sings the national anthem in New Orleans

Kris, who has a few months of reigning over the “Idol” world left, sang the national anthem in New Orleans this afternoon, where the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings are vying for the NFC championship and a spot in the Feb. 7 Super Bowl.

Do you like his rendition? We did, but we also like a new ditty emerging on Twitter among Saints fans, “Favre on the ground, Favre on the ground.”

Wonder what inspired that one?

As any Twihard knows, Pattz plays the piano and guitar and has even contributed tracks to the movie soundtracks.

But the hottie isn’t budging.

Platt, 62, performed the song less than two weeks ago on American Idol. Vikings quarterback Brett Favre chanted the refrain in the locker room after Minnesota upended the Cowboys last Sunday.

Music Review: Jason Castro – The Love Uncompromised EP

On to 2010, Castro delivered his first acoustic release, The Love Uncompromised EP. It has a solid foundation with the first track and lead single, “Let’s Just Fall In Love Again.” The simple and catchy guitar riff allows Jason Castro’s beautiful melody-minded creativity to shine thru. Those who watched American Idol fell in love with Castro’s down-to-earth personality backed by an insatiable musical appetite. With the passionate vocals produced in “Sweet Medicine,” Castro’s musical intimacy and passion for the art clearly shines forth throughout the five tracks. “I feel like the album really captures my personality,” Castro says. “People got to know me a bit on the show, so I wanted to build on that by including all these songs I’ve written about my life. I wanted to share with people the things that are meaningful to me.”

The U.S. National Figure Skating Championships were this past weekend. Last night at the final exhibition show, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the Gold Medal winning Ice Dance champions, skated to David Cook’s Billie Jean. Assuming they medal at Vancouver (they’re ranked #1 in the world right now), they will likely perform the same routine at the Olympic skating exhibition as well. Here’s video of last night’s performance:

It was nice to hear David C’s great Billie Jean version playing behind Davis and White’s exhibition program. … I wouldn’t exactly say the lyrics were in line with the side-by-side twizzles and such! But the song sounded great and they’re lovely skaters, so it was nice to see anyway.

David Archuleta’s fans raised over $35,000 for Rising Star Outreach. About 10 months ago, goals were set to help a poor leprosy community in India. $15,000 was needed to help build a sewage system and to provide dental equipment and supplies for the volunteer dental team from the USA to use. A secondary school was being built. $20,000 was needed to furnish it with lights, desks, chairs, cabinets, and ceiling fans (it often gets to be over 120 degrees, and there is noooo air conditioning). These goals have been met and exceeded. Thanks to David Archuleta’s fans worldwide who donated in his name.

Re the guy getting cut on idol – IDK, but, even though they technically broke the contract with 19, I still think it’s not a big enough deal to cut the guy completely. After all, we already have the spoilers of the top 24 anyways, so it gets out somehow, and, aside from the curiosity factor, most people don’t care that much who is in the top 24, since we hardly know these guys anyway.

He may. But, considering all of the groups that have people going to Haiti, I think the most important attributes of any volunteer is the ability to listen and compassion.

I hope Kris is over there with a church group, charity group.. red cross, etc. outside & away from the 19E money machine. Because if 19E sucked him in to do Idol Gives Back… I’ll be really pissed at 19E. Haiti needs kind hearts, skills and money, not a bunch of 19E morons running around with cameras. Anyway… I think you guys hashed this convo out a day or two ago when I wasn’t really online, so I won’t go on with this. I hope Kris remains safe and is able to lend a helping hand on his own (or despite 19E).

I’m not sure what special skills Kris has from his missionary work, but I do know he helped build houses in Thailand after the tsunami. I read that they really need a lot of people to just do manual labor in helping to set up temporary shelters for so many of the survivors who have no place to live. I’m sure Kris would be happy to help with that.

I don’t think it really matters whether Kris is going with a church/charity group or with Idol Gives Back. If he’s doing it with 19/Idol, that could actually be a really good thing because in a few months, when they air Idol Gives Back, a lot of the attention being paid to Haiti now will have subsided, and anything Kris did there will be able to help to raise awareness and hopefully help IGB raise more money for relief efforts there. Haiti is going to need help for a long time.

I’m not either and someone brought up a good point.. that the awareness will be needed later after haiti isn’t running 24/7 on CNN. I guess this is where my Marketing background makes me cynical. I’ve seen good causes used to further the marketing machine. As far as I am concerned 19E just exploits their ‘charity’. I was laughing when I saw the mosquito nets being handed out (was that last year?) because they were packaged with a big American Idol logo on the front. Everyone is right, haiti needs all they can get… it just makes me cringe. BTW – just so I am clear with everyone, this opinion has zero to do with Kris.

Explain to me why this is something that should make anyone “cringe”?

Well I’m not cringing but I’m of the belief that celebrities should physically stay away from these types of things. Give money. Arrange for airlifts of food and medical supplies. Participate in telethons. When a “celebrity” goes to “help”, their security and safety can become the priority. The money and effort that it’ll take to ensure Kris’s safety and wellbeing would be better spent on more practical things. JMO.

The last time they did an “Idol Gives Back” they raised over $60 million in donations. Explain to me why this is something that should make anyone “cringe”?

Because behind it all is a marketing spin. They may do very well in raising well needed cash, but their motive is not completely altruistic by any stretch of the imagination.

JMO.

I agree with this completely – unless they have skills that can be used such as medical, search and rescue or prior experience in emergency situations, then they have a great probability of just getting in the way and become an extra concern. Just talking about celebs in general in these types of situations, how many are used to living in situation where there is possibly no power, water and are faced with possible violence outside their door? I’m all about help – but if you have a group of people that need ‘extra’ help to get around or secure food and water just to have a PR plug, then I have issue with this. Why feed one more camera man, right now? They could just as easily wait a month until supply routes are set up and UN workers have created a safe and secure environment.

  • will

hoosiermama I changed that from a statement to a question about it belonging in the spoilers thread because I honestly didn’t know where this story was coming from. If it was something that was being reported and confirmed by reputable news outlets, then I guess it no longer really qualifies as a spoiler, it’s news. I can live with that.

But I just Googled it. Only a couple of blogs have mentioned it, and they are calling it a “rumor.” So yes, this belongs with all of the other rumors in the spoilers thread.

  • babybelle32

When a “celebrity” goes to “help”, their security and safety can become the priority. The money and effort that it’ll take to ensure Kris’s safety and wellbeing would be better spent on more practical things. JMO.

Based on reports that I’ve seen, Kris’ security won’t be anymore than anyone else’s. One of the hold-ups has been that the US has insisted that doctors and everyone else who are helping out, have more than adequate security. If 19 is planning this mission, and the mission could have easily been planned by the groups that Kris is already involved with, including his friend Matt’s, that does these types of missions all of the time, they would be providing Kris’ security, so how does this take focus away from what other people are doing?

Kris will likely participate in handing out food, clothing, etc. Not sure what else he would be qualified to do.

And that’s a heck of a lot. Even without the attention that Kris will bring to the situation, there is still a dire need for volunteers to do the things that you mention. As well as listen to people, and help them get the things that they need, even if it is something small.

  • Levine

Kris will likely participate in handing out food, clothing, etc. Not sure what else he would be qualified to do.

Or helping build houses, singing LLWD…the list goes on and on. Let’s face it, it’s a ‘win-win’ for all involved. Kris gets a good PR, 19E gets a good show, Haitians get more donations. Remember, “he was asked to go”. I double any idols would turn down the offer. That’s why I think it’s a little rich to name him “American Hero” .

Is there really a dire need for volunteers? I thought they were saying they only needed professionally trained people at this point. I found this text written from someone over there in Haiti.

Haiti looks as though an atomic bomb has gone off. The city has become a cemetery – Buildings have collapsed and with heavy concrete and no equipment to move shattered structures hundreds remain under the rubble. Decomposing bodies are beginning to smell as many bodies have not been disposed of yet. People are in survival mode and there is so much despair on the faces. It is very difficult to explain just how hard to see how much pain, destruction and death everywhere. However, I am also amazed and heartened to see so many people – doctors, military, and volunteers, arriving at the airport. So many people have left their comfortable life at home to come and help. I am very grateful to be here and witness this effort. We are making a difference.

The number of deaths is between 100,000 and 200,000, let alone the number of wounded. So far they collected around 50,000 bodies. And this is a task that s/b done quickly for the fear of epidemics.
There is so much urgent work to do for organized groups.
I have friends who volunteered with organized groups in Asia after the tsunami and they were working like 16 hours a day.
Volunteers are very important also because many locals are, in those circunstances, just crushed and in apathy because they lost everything and loved ones so they need support.

Winner of David Archuleta phone call from Rexburg
    By Steven Pope

REXBURG – A BYU-Idaho student wins a phone call from David Archuleta this afternoon. Courtney Cook is, just like many other single girls, Archuleta’s biggest fan.

So she called in to an Archuleta hot-line and told her favorite Christmas memory in hopes of getting a chance to speak to her idol.

“Umm it’s pretty exciting, umm. I’m going to try my best to let him know I’m single. And maybe we can hook something up there,” said Cook. Cook’s favorite Christmas memory was when her family spent their Christmas funds on a family that had greater needs.

Here was Andy’s response to Dave’s tweet of the Metal rooster:

andyskib: # @thedavidcook I like the direction you want to go in for the next record. Very natural and earthy, kind of Farm-ish

Thanks MJ for clearing up the confusion about the Michael Lynche story. You’re right, it’s entered the news cycle, so it’s silly to think spoiler-phobes like me could avoid it.

But it’s interesting how this story got picked up everywhere. The NY Post article seems to be the primary source cited in everyone else’s coverage. And what is the source the Post cites? The “Idol spoiler site Joe’s Place.” And there has been no comment or confirmation from TPTB. So this is merely an unconfirmed rumor/spoiler from Joe’s Place that’s gained traction and snowballed into the mainstream media. I guess I should be grateful that all of Joe’s spoilers don’t get the kind of dissemination this one has.

Yep. By the way, just so it’s clear? I had nothing to do with that article. I would have written it very differently. Or advised it not be written at all.
