Jessica Sanchez Talks Glee Role & American Idol Judges- Trevor Live 2012 Interview

Carrie Underwood chats about ‘Sound of Music’ at ‘CMT Artists of the Year’ taping – OK, we can’t tell you much about Monday night’s taping of the “CMT Artists of the Year” special — sworn to secrecy and all that. But we can tell you that’s where The Tennessean caught up with Carrie Underwood, who’s very excited about being Maria von Trapp in a live NBC production of “The Sound of Music” next year. Carrie wants you to know it will NOT be a remake. “The movie doesn’t have to be redone,” she insists. “It’s perfect.” – Read more at The Tennessean

Kris Allen Update from Africa – If we didn’t feel like we were in Africa during the short time we were in Nairobi, then when we got to Turkana, we had definitely arrived in “Africa.” The view outside of our windshield on our drive to the guesthouse was a vast, hot, dusty, barren land that you would think no one would be able to survive in for even a couple of days. At least I know I couldn’t. Yet the people of Turkana live here. This is their home. This is where they raise their families. And they do the best that they can to provide for them — but it’s not easy out here. The guesthouse where we stayed was pretty much nothing but a place to sleep and eat. For the most part, we didn’t have running water, which means no shower or flushing toilet. – Read more at World Vision.org

Kelly Clarkson: ‘You’re always judged on looks’ – It has been almost a decade since Kelly Clarkson auditioned for American Idol but she has seen lasting success with seven top 10 singles in the UK alone. Kelly confirmed in her BBC interview that she’s been approached to do Broadway. She said though that it’s a timing thing and she doesn’t want to go into an existing show and do a short guest stint, she’d prefer to develop something from the ground up. Hm. So, a huge time commitment. That actually makes me lean against Kelly’s 2013 surprise being Broadway related but maybe she’s really going to put in that much time into a full scale new show or revival. I go back to the Funny Girl revival which ran into funding issues last year, maybe she’ll help resurrect that? Or, maybe the surprise is something else. I still think a special show involving the Ella, Judy Garland, and/or Rosemary Clooney songbooks could be it.

  • journey1

I am not a fan of Kris’s music, but I do think he is a much better singer/performer than a couple other Idol people who have done much better than he.  Of course, they received more promotion than Kris did. I never felt Kris received the promotion that he deserved as the winner of Idol.   I have enjoyed following his trek through Africa.  I am sure it is a great experience even though it has been rough in areas.

  • girlygirltoo

You have to be a great comedic (and dramatic) actress to pull off Funny Girl, so I don’t know if that would be a role Kelly could bring justice to.

I would like to see her have a chance to do something on Broadway, though :)

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m sure that people realize this, since in the video bios they show Carson recruiting people for the show, and it’s said on the broadcast that the contestants are solicited.

I adore Kelly, but I cannot, in a million trillion years ever see her playing Fanny Brice.  I could see her maybe developing a one-woman limited engagement-like show wherein she talks about her life and experiences, sings some of her hits, and some of her favorite standards and broadway show tunes….kind of like Barry Manilow has done in the past (and is doing again in January), or like Hugh Jackman’s show (minus the dancing and the gold lame pants) or perhaps more likely she will do one of the NY Philharmonic musical stagings…that would be a good thing for her, and they usually have some non-traditional casting (Stephen Colbert, Christina Hendricks and Jon Cryer were in Company).  Her good friend Reba has done one and it is not a huge time committment

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

I watched that video 3 times trying to see the girl ‘nearly choking to death’. Seems a huge exaggeration since I couldn’t detect her choking at all.

I’m truly stumped as to what Kelly’s big thing is for next year that she’s wanted to do forever.  She pretty much ruled out tv/movie acting in the Sunday Brunch appearance and Broadway seems less likely now with the BBC interview.  Hmm.

Here’s a lighthearted video interview with Kiss FM (UK) from today (http://youtu.be/cMTL00tamiw).  She talked about the misquote in the Daily Mirror last week and in a funny part, sang a little I’ll Be Home For Christmas with the DJ.  She was trying to harmonize with him and was giving him crap for him changing keys on her.  haha  Then she went on to tell a story about singing a Christmas song with someone at a big event and this person said that they could harmonize and they couldn’t.  They would sing her melody instead and Kelly didn’t know if she should stick with it or what.  She wouldn’t name names and only had other nice things to say about this person.  Thinking back, this must’ve been something semi-recent so that makes me think it was either Issac Slade of The Fray on The Christmas Song or Demi singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, both from last year.  I lean towards it being Demi.

In this one (http://uk.omg.yahoo.com/video/kelly-clarksons-exclusive-interview-151603288.html) she confirms that she’s touring in some capacity in late spring.

And unconfirmed, but mostly confirmed, reports have her performing on X Factor this weekend.  Her backup singer mentioned it on FB.

  • irockhard

Ah yes, she’s one of Wind-up’s latest signees.

I imagine Taylor’s new hit song will feature the lyric “direction” and will allude to something about December, Central Park, animals, and/or hair.

  • stargazed

Thank you, Mj, for posting Clay’s concert date at Musikfest tonight.  Clay’s Christmas/Comedy Tour needs to be seen to be believed.

  • stargazed

I think Kelly is a remarkable talent and I could easily see her doing Broadway.  I know I’d love to see her in anything she does.  Cute as a button and more talent than anyone should ever have.

  • yksask

Would love to see Clay and Kelly do broadway together. They are good friends, both hilarious and talented.

Thanks MJ for keeping us up on Clay`s Christmas tour.

  • stargazed

I forgot to mention that Clay’s concert tonight at Musikfest is Sold Out as are a number of other dates.

  • fuzzywuzzy

The only other date that is sold out is the
Potawatomi Casino/Northern Lights Theater/Expo Center in Milwauke (capacity 500). The Musikfest Cafe is sold out with a capacity of 650.

  • calliebeckett

Not sure if this was posted yet, but Kelly is performing on X Factor UK this week I think…

  • yksask

Yes they are sold out. Isn`t that great. Actually Detroit seats 5,000 and the seats are moving really well.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Actually, blocks of seats have been removed from sale at Detroit, so it remains to be seen how well that show will end up selling. In general, it appears that for most shows, Clay is selling between 500-800 tickets (according to a Claymate statskeeper), which is pretty decent, considering the decline in his fanbase.

    Which is growing.

  • fuzzywuzzy

So, I was correcting a poster who mistakenly indicated that “a number of other dates” were sold out. In reality, there is only one other sold out concert thus far.

  • yksask

Had not heard of seats being removed. Do you have a link??  Being able to tour right now and put people in those seats is positive for anyone in this economy. He is selling better this tour than last so he must be happy. I know I am happy watching the clack. A fun show and he is in great voice.

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s good, since Clay had told his fans that if the attendance at this tour wasn’t sufficient that he may not be able to tour again. I think that the only way to know how much Clay’s fanbase is growing will be the sales of his next CD.

  • yksask

     Glad you are happy.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I have no link, but a friend of a friend works at that theater and that’s how I know. It happens fairly frequently, as the theater has a pretty large capacity. As of a week ago, Clay told one of his audiences that he needed to sell 700 tickets to the Detroit show.

    Should that be a joke?
I come from Germany.  I didn´t watch the show, but there weren´t any news about this in tv, radio or newspapers.

  • MellyPer1692

If Clay is selling between 500-800 tickets to his show, that’s great. There are more recent idols that aren’t able to sell that many and Clays Idol run was 9 seasons ago. I’m sure that Celebrity Apprentice has helped him sell tickets too. I’m not a fan of Clays music, but I admire his tenacity and I will say that I enjoy his personality more these days. I think his coming out really freed him in a lot of ways.

  • fuzzywuzzy

” I think his coming out really freed him in a lot of ways. ”

I agree, but it also caused a lot of his fans to abandon him. It’s too bad that so many of them felt misled about his sexuality and that was a dealbreaker for them. On the positive side, it’s probably good that they are gone.

  • yksask

Just checked the Detroit site and all the blocks appear to be selling tickets except a couple of small ones at the back. Those could be sold out? Can you tell me which blocks they have closed off?

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sorry. Don’t have those details. It was obvious though, as blocks of seats became unavailable literally overnight.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/POXOKA5X5UXYT55OTU54Q575XM Sandy

I belong to a few of the Clay fan boards and have’nt seen any mention of blocks of tickets being taken out.  Can your friend provide a link where they saw it.  Thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pat.quinn.1426 Pat Quinn

So glad to read that Clay is doing well after almost ten years since AI.  Good for him!

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 starfishy2000

Well, first of all, I am from Detroit and had been watching ticket sales, as I was concerned that the Fox is a larger venue then many of the others on this tour. As of a couple of weeks ago, ticket sales had been okay. Clay made the joke on one of the first nights of the tour. Then that weekend, they started airing commercials on the local NBC station, and had advertising all over downtown. AND they had a very nice Black Friday for their entire holiday concert series. So it is completely possible that those tickets sold for real.

And if you look at the seat map on ticketmaster, there is not legitimate section that the seats could be removed that would make sense. All but a couple have seats sold AND available. They wouldn’t sit people behind a removed section.

I know many people don’t believe Clay can sell the tickets anymore, but unless you can provide some proof, other then a friend told me, then I don’t buy it….

  • fuzzywuzzy

I guess that the only way that we’ll know for sure is if/when the boxscores are published. I don’t know this person who works at the theater, but my friend is a Claymate, so I just figured that the info was legit.

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 starfishy2000

Or they could have been sold. I mean, is it too hard to admit that?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m doubtful because of how quickly large sections of seats disappeared from the sales map, and given all of the factors, it’s not likely that they were all sold. Sure, anything is possible, but I’d be very surprised.

  • http://twitter.com/krisjonin Jonins

“I never felt Kris received the promotion that he deserved as the winner of Idol.”

I also noticed that. It made me wonder why? Is it because the people (media, label and management) believe more in Adam than him? Or the negative publicity (textgate) affected his chance? Or is it because Kris himself made some limits that we don’t know about. I mean, he’s good looking, has a good voice (better than most popular singers) and has charming personality. I can’t understand why they don’t promote him well.

  • MellyPer1692

    .

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Kris got the promo opportunities that the other winners got. (and much more than Taylor and Lee) RCA paired Kris up with good songwriters and found him a hit song that went top 10 and that they released a couple of months before his album came out. He performed at many, many Jingle Bell Balls and did tons of radio promo. They also found him some really good groups to open for and he also had some headlining shows worked in with these other opportunities. Kris and his song was used for the Ford commercials and shown during every episode in the next season of AI.

  • stargazed

I think Clay’s Appearance on Celebrity Appearance put him back on the map for a lot of folks and they enjoyed him on the show and are now coming out to see him.

He’s getting some great promo this tour and many interviews all of which help move tickets.  Clay came to my city for the Tried & True concert and it was like a stealth appearance.  He came and went and if you hadn’t seen the theater marquee you would never have known he was in the city.  No ads, nothing in the paper or tv or radio.  Very strange. You can’t sell tickets like that!  This time around, Clay is being promoted properly with radio, tv etc.  It’s good to see that.

  • http://twitter.com/krisjonin Jonins

I agree with you but what I mean is after the first album. You’re talking about the first album, fresh from his win from Idol. I am talking about this 2nd album and/or after his year as AI winner. I consider the follow up promo is lacking.

But you are right that he has more promo opportunities than Taylor and Lee (specially Lee).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1396530335 Jan Clay

I am so glad they have finally figured it out, that promotion = ticket sales.

I heard that last nights concert at Musikfest was great!  He was spot on with the audience.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“He’s getting some great promo this tour and many interviews all of which
help move tickets.  Clay came to my city for the Tried & True

the city.  No ads, nothing in the paper or tv or radio.  Very strange.
You can’t sell tickets like that!”

That was a different situation, since Clay taped a PBS special that was widely shown, and that was to be the main promotional vehicle for the subsequent tour supporting Tried & Tour. The promotional money went primarily into that special, and that approach has been successful in the past for other artists (eg. Buble, Groban). Unfortunately, that CD and tour was not very popular among the PBS audience or Clay’s fanbase, so that was reflected in the poor T&T tour attendance.

“This time around, Clay is being
promoted properly with radio, tv etc.  It’s good to see that.”

This is a different situation and a Christmas/holiday concert is far more likely to appeal to a broader audience. That, plus Clay’s increased visibility due to the Celebrity Apprentice, seems to have attracted a larger average audience for these shows.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

    My mistake, sorry about that!
I agree that RCA has done a poor to terrible job on the second eras for the majority of their signed Idols over the years. It remains to be seen if Interscope will do the same for Scotty and P2 or if they will support them more when its time for album #2.

  • yksask

Too bad all of that advertising and the BF ticket sales didn’t help. The Detroit show is cancelled, as I predicted.

  • Nadine_Bitch

Was it cancelled because of poor ticket sales?

What is the capacity of the venue?

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yes, poor ticket sales, but the capacity of the venue was almost 5,000, so it was a mistake to book Clay into this size of venue. Probably, the venue needed to sell around 1,500-2,000 for the show to go on. As of a couple of weeks ago, Clay said that he needed to sell 700 tickets. More info here:

    http://www.theclackhouse.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6444&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=50

  • workdog

Aw, that’s too bad for his fans that planned to attend. It seems like for a Christmas show his other venues have been decent enough to warrant the effort and this one seems a bit out of line for size. Regardless, being ten years out and still working is commendable and it’s a rare artist that doesn’t on occasion lose a booking or “adjust” their schedule for this or a variety of reasons. Sounds like that those have gotten to see the performances are enjoying them so there ya go!

He does have a voice for the material showcased and the choice of orchestral backing sounds lovely.
