Kris Allen Update from Africa – If we didn’t feel like we were in Africa during the short time we were in Nairobi, then when we got to Turkana, we had definitely arrived in “Africa.” The view outside of our windshield on our drive to the guesthouse was a vast, hot, dusty, barren land that you would think no one would be able to survive in for even a couple of days. At least I know I couldn’t. Yet the people of Turkana live here. This is their home. This is where they raise their families. And they do the best that they can to provide for them — but it’s not easy out here. The guesthouse where we stayed was pretty much nothing but a place to sleep and eat. For the most part, we didn’t have running water, which means no shower or flushing toilet. – Read more at World Vision.org

Kris got the promo opportunities that the other winners got. (and much more than Taylor and Lee) RCA paired Kris up with good songwriters and found him a hit song that went top 10 and that they released a couple of months before his album came out. He performed at many, many Jingle Bell Balls and did tons of radio promo. They also found him some really good groups to open for and he also had some headlining shows worked in with these other opportunities. Kris and his song was used for the Ford commercials and shown during every episode in the next season of AI.

I think Clay’s Appearance on Celebrity Appearance put him back on the map for a lot of folks and they enjoyed him on the show and are now coming out to see him.

He’s getting some great promo this tour and many interviews all of which help move tickets.  Clay came to my city for the Tried & True concert and it was like a stealth appearance.  He came and went and if you hadn’t seen the theater marquee you would never have known he was in the city.  No ads, nothing in the paper or tv or radio.  Very strange. You can’t sell tickets like that!  This time around, Clay is being promoted properly with radio, tv etc.  It’s good to see that.

I agree with you but what I mean is after the first album. You’re talking about the first album, fresh from his win from Idol. I am talking about this 2nd album and/or after his year as AI winner. I consider the follow up promo is lacking.

But you are right that he has more promo opportunities than Taylor and Lee (specially Lee).

I am so glad they have finally figured it out, that promotion = ticket sales.

I heard that last nights concert at Musikfest was great!  He was spot on with the audience.

That was a different situation, since Clay taped a PBS special that was widely shown, and that was to be the main promotional vehicle for the subsequent tour supporting Tried & Tour. The promotional money went primarily into that special, and that approach has been successful in the past for other artists (eg. Buble, Groban). Unfortunately, that CD and tour was not very popular among the PBS audience or Clay’s fanbase, so that was reflected in the poor T&T tour attendance.

“This time around, Clay is being
promoted properly with radio, tv etc.  It’s good to see that.”

This is a different situation and a Christmas/holiday concert is far more likely to appeal to a broader audience. That, plus Clay’s increased visibility due to the Celebrity Apprentice, seems to have attracted a larger average audience for these shows.

    My mistake, sorry about that!
I agree that RCA has done a poor to terrible job on the second eras for the majority of their signed Idols over the years. It remains to be seen if Interscope will do the same for Scotty and P2 or if they will support them more when its time for album #2.

A couple of vids from Clay`s Christmas tour last night. Love the snow! Also love how he can power a song. Then end with a touching, soft song.

“Well, first of all, I am from Detroit and had been watching ticket sales, as I was concerned that the Fox is a larger venue then many of the others on this tour. As of a couple of weeks ago, ticket sales had been okay. Clay made the joke on one of the first nights of the tour. Then that weekend, they started airing commercials on the local NBC station, and had advertising all over downtown. AND they had a very nice Black Friday for their entire holiday concert series. So it is completely possible that those tickets sold for real.”

Too bad all of that advertising and the BF ticket sales didn’t help. The Detroit show is cancelled, as I predicted.

  • Nadine_Bitch

Was it cancelled because of poor ticket sales?

What is the capacity of the venue?

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yes, poor ticket sales, but the capacity of the venue was almost 5,000, so it was a mistake to book Clay into this size of venue. Probably, the venue needed to sell around 1,500-2,000 for the show to go on. As of a couple of weeks ago, Clay said that he needed to sell 700 tickets. More info here:

Aw, that’s too bad for his fans that planned to attend. It seems like for a Christmas show his other venues have been decent enough to warrant the effort and this one seems a bit out of line for size. Regardless, being ten years out and still working is commendable and it’s a rare artist that doesn’t on occasion lose a booking or “adjust” their schedule for this or a variety of reasons. Sounds like that those have gotten to see the performances are enjoying them so there ya go!

He does have a voice for the material showcased and the choice of orchestral backing sounds lovely.
