Idol Headlines for 12/30/12

Happy last day of 2012!

‘A.I.’ Finalist Kevin Covais from Chicken Little …TO SLIM SHADY

American Idol” finalist Kevin Covais got eliminated from the show singing Doris Day, but his karaoke repertoire is a lot more modern … and involves rapping instead of singing. The 23-year-old — who took “Idol” by storm as a teenager in 2006 — grabbed the mic at the Social Sports Kitchen in New York City the other day and channeled his inner white boy rapper for a rendition of Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie.” – Via TMZ

The Voice’s Nicholas David on ‘Over the Rainbow,’ Clashes With Cee Lo and the Power of ’70s Music – Nicholas David’s approach to song selection on Season 3 of The Voice may have been a little different from that of his fellow contestants. “I never looked at this experience like it was a competition,” says the Minnesota soul man. “I trust in the Spirit and play from my heart. When we live in our minds, there’s division: Race, religion, creed, political beliefs and all that. But I truly feel when you live from your heart, it’s like a truth that connects us all, and we’re able to breathe a deeper breath where everybody is.” – Read more at TV Line

Nah, no Slim Shady.  Nearly 7 years later and rapping, he’s still Chicken Little.

  • aj rabin

Yeah maybe Kevin should of waited 6years to try out and come in as a white rapper. NOT . He was fun on the show but had no business making into the top 24 let alone top 12. He stole Gideon McKinneys spot who was much more entertaining and talented.

  • raya

I’ll say this for Kevin.  I see him pop up on my television on various sitcoms and etc.  He’s not a big star, but he seems to find regular acting work.  Last I saw him he was still playing a high school student on one of the Disney Channel shows.  Not a music career, but it’s a career, and likely one that pays his bills.

Besides, karaoke is supposed to be about having fun, not about being good.

  • mjsbigblog

Yep. He’s got steady work as an actor. Not too shabby at all.

  • hillstreetblooz

That’s right, Gideon shoulda made it further – 1000 cool points to ya for remembering the Gid! :)

Zimbio’s best cover songs of 2012.….r+Songs+of+2012

    Adam Lambert’s “Is This Love”

Of course someone who rose to fame on a glorified karaoke show like
American Idol would be comfortable with his covers. Adam Lambert coasted through a number of songs popularized by other people in 2012,
including a particularly spirited take on Madonna’s “Ray of Light” at
the VH1 Divas concert in December. But it was Lambert’s effortless
version of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” that really won us over.

  • Larc

Ever since Arnold Stang died, there’s been a vacancy among nerd actors for Kevin to fill.  :)

  • Niall

I like Kevin. He’s always getting parts in various movies and sitcoms. There are definitely worse things to be caught on video doing than a little karaoke.

  • Kariann Hart

I have thought about the abuse Gideon took from Simon.  So unfair, especially since his father died just before Idol started.  He never gave a dull performance whereas Kevin was a bit boring.  Strange how certain things happen.

  • chillj

I thought he just looked like he was having fun.  There are much worse things than a night out with a mic.

  • curly_yenta

I think I’d rather be a ‘nerd’ actor with a steady job, than a floundering out-of-work singer.

  • lovetheusa1776

The word “effortless” sums up one of the remarkable characteristics of Lambert’s vocals – first remarked by Slash during AI8 and WLL.  AL’s power and range are truly unusual.  But, as in “Is This Love” – that power can be sublimated into something subtly sweetly gorgeous – a luscious performance.

  • YankeeFan08

Is This Love is one of Adam’s best covers ever.  Pay attention Josiah Leming (other thread) …. THAT is how you sing a cover.  LOL

  • justmefornow

After watching that cover by Josiah Leming (other thread), I thought I’d post this equaling amusing, (right down to the mic, lol), cover of James Durbin’s “Higher Than Heaven”.
(I give the kid A for effort and for his good taste in music, however ;)

  • sue

Kevin is awesome and I’m a fan. I have watch several of the his movies that he was in. He looked like he was just having with his friends.  :)

  • tripp_ncwy

What could they be doing in the studio?

    Kris Allen @KrisAllen
The piano I played on very first record.

    Cale Mills @calevis24
I don’t know what these do, but Darian at Blue Chair Studio sure does. #Genius

American Idol was named one of the “10 Worst Shows on TV” by Yahoo! Entertainment’s 2012 Year in Review along with Honey BooBoo and the Jersey Shore, among others.

  • wordnerdarchie

I asked that question on twitter and was told by fans that they’re working on the next CD.

  • girlygirltoo

well that’s probably more the fans hoping that that’s what they are doing. I don’t think anyone (other than Kris & Cale and the people at the studio), knows for sure. But Kris has promised that we will get a new cd in 2013, so fingers crossed that they are actually doing some recording tonight, even if just demos. :)

ETA – they are at the studio where Kris recorded Brand New Shoes

if Adam did not mess up the first part of “Ray of Light” , then I would say that was his best cover. “Is this Love ” is nice, but my repeat button is pushed uncountable times for Ray of Light , the 2nd pitchperfect part…

  • Axxxel

So Adam is in the island paradise of Bali and will have a gig, in around 12 hours from now, and he still finds time to tell his opinion about Les Miserables… I havent seen the movie….

Eta: maybe it is too hot in Bali , not ideal for strawberry blonds like Adam or maybe he is taking it slowly to battle the jetlag and be fit for the gig.

  • mjsbigblog

Can’t wait for the new year when all of these TEDIOUS best of/Top 10s/Whatevias STOP. They are just link bait for the sites posting them.

I almost joined the fray, and I thought better of it. Maybe next year. lol.

  • lovetheusa1776

Was disappointed he chose ROL for Divas – would have preferred something more party-ready – less homage to Madge.  Not my favorite get-up either, striking as it was.

As far as the vocals, have no facts.  Read sound off – couldn’t hear – someone posted he said “there it is” when it came on – another said extraordinary what he was able to do under the circumstances.  Further info emerged?

Couldn’t have Kanye found someone less annoying to get pregnant? *sigh*

Jessica Sanchez is favorite cover model of the magazines in the Philippines

  • CSFan

Looks like this was copied from Fantasia’s Instagram account. She appears to feel gay marriage and smoking pot are horrible things people should focus on instead of her “sins.” Personally I would have used poverty and war as my examples, but I guess I know what side of the fence she’s on:

  • lovesickheroine

She’s so gorgeous! I hope that issue is available online since I live in Canada

  • Kariann Hart

Yes, Jessica IS gorgeous although she looks so gorwon-up in this photo!   I can’t wait until we see and hear more from her! We talk about the different arenas of entertainment opened to Idol alumni – modeling one of them.

  • Axxxel

See link …   you are exactly right, in the middle of the song.. he shouts :there it is” and sang more powerful after that…

Maybe I like it because I just like the theatrical aspect of the whole performance…

  • arkboy

It’s always a wonderful thing when you can learn something by reading an article. For example, I learned in this article, that Kevin Covais took Idol by storm. Who knew?

  • Larc

That’s a pretty remarkable feat for an 11th place finisher.

  • justmefornow

I actually just found that list pretty amusing. AI, Honey BooBoo and Jersey Shore on the same list, but no mention of the supreme trainwreck of XFactor?

  • girlygirltoo

Interesting article on what happened to music writing (music journalism, criticism, etc – not songwriting) in 2012
