‘Idol’ star’s weddding is New Year’s eve

Naperville will be rolling out the red — make that white — carpet for the New Year’s Eve wedding of “American Idol” finalist Gina Glocksen to Neuqua Valley High School science teacher Joe Ruzicka.

With “American Idol” being such a large part of Glocksen’s life over the past two years, the wedding and reception will have numerous “Idol” tie-ins, starting with the wedding party, which will include two fellow Season 6 contestants as bridesmaids — “Idol” winner Jordin Sparks and top 12 finalist Haley Scarnato. Both will stand up with six other bridesmaids at the ceremony, to take place at the Naper Settlement chapel on Wednesday.

“At the tour (American Idols LIVE! 2007) I asked all the girls (to be bridesmaids),” said Glocksen, “Jordin and Haley carried through with it. The others took gigs. New Year’s Eve is one day you can’t ask a performer to take off.”

One of the hairdressers from “American Idol” will be flying out to do Glocksen’s hair. And, in addition to Sparks and Scarnato being a part of the wedding party, Season 6 contestants Lakisha Jones and Chris Richardson may also be in attendance.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ turns viewers into loons

For those of us who watch “American Idol,” this is it: the last moment before we all lose our minds.

That’s because “Idol” makes us crazy. For five months, our sanity takes off for parts unknown. It doesn’t happen all at once, of course. That would kill us. No, it just sort of quietly dribbles away until people who were once rational, clear-thinking individuals (I don’t know you personally, but I’m assuming) have been transformed into raving loons.

That’s not only how “Idol” works, though, that’s exactly how “Idol” is designed to work. The show looks beyond the finale to the radio and sales charts. That requires a degree of fan devotion deep enough to last not only through the end of the season, but well into the months spent anticipating the contestants’ albums. And viewers are all too happy to oblige.

The attraction will enable Disney guests to experience the challenge of auditioning, performing onstage in competition or judging performances in a live interactive entertainment setting.

‘American Idol’: The Best Of 2008

The seventh season of “American Idol” will be remembered for lots of things: for allowing contestants to play instruments, for featuring the music of the Beatles, for the nail-biting David vs. David finale, and then there was that whole “Paula Accidentally Critiques a Performance Before She Actually Saw It” debacle.

But around the MTV News office, this season will be remembered as the year where we went “all in” with our coverage. With live blogs, 60-second recaps, breaking-news updates, exclusive music performances, in-depth home visits and “Idol” fanatic roundtables, MTV News had a blast dissecting every nanosecond of the pop-culture phenomenon. And without further ado, here are some of our favorite “Idol” videos produced in 2008.

Major Labels Consider Hulu Partnership, New Music Video Site as Alternatives to YouTube

Labels are continuing to grasp for ways to milk revenue out of their videos that appear for free online. Following Warner Musicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s exit from YouTube last week, the majors are not only exploring a partnership with the NBC-owned video site Hulu but considering launching their own stand-alone music-video site.

According to reports, two major labels are considering an additional partnership with Hulu, the News Corp./NBC video venture thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s mostly used to stream NBC shows. While Hulu isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a household name like YouTube, the site drew ad revenues in the $70 million range this year, not far behind YouTubeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s $100 million, and the two companies are expected to pull in even more ad money in 2009.

It Was a Great Year For Outing!

Actually, celebs came out all on their own in ’08–they didn’t even have to be dragged out, kicking and screaming, like they usually do. That saved me a lot of pulling, yanking, and washing off of blood, so thanks, gays!

Among the highlights of the year in celebrity closet busting:

*Clay Aiken not only came out, he produced a baby and reportedly dated a Spamalot chorus boy. No longer is he “Invisible,” to name a song of his when he had big hits.

Carson Daly not a fan of ‘American Idol’

Carson Daly loves music, but apparently not à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Clay Aiken Blogs For Education

Singer Clay Aiken has blogged on the UNICEF website about the effect UNICEF-inspired gifts are having on children around the world, and has urged people to help give children an education.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Every child has a right to an education,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ wrote Aiken. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Often times in emergency situations, it becomes harder than ever for children to go to school. Natural disasters and conflict often destroy schools and supplies, leaving children without a place or the tools to learn. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“UNICEF works hard to make sure that children receive an education no matter what the obstacle. Yeah, I will definitely be checking out Idolatry and Idol in 60 Seconds next season.

The MSNBC article hits a number of nails on their heads. I guess since I’m responding to it, I must be one of the nails. Of course, I’m in excellent company both here and on a number of other sites.

I’m not looking forward to the new season; I don’t like caring about who wins a reality TV show competition. In truth, I never really cared until Season 5. Vestiges of what came over me that year – actually much more so after the season was over – still remain, though; therefore, like so many of the peeps here, I’ll pay attention to it again this year. I will, however, make a concerted effort to be a casual fan. It’s worked for me the last two seasons. I guess it helps when none of the contestants has that magic something that hooks me. I hope that is true again of Season 8.

That said, I know I’ll be keeping track of the proceedings. Let the fan wars begin – without me.

    Happy New Year, everyone!

  • http://www.myspace.com/wn780 k4dc

Yeah, that MSNBC article spoke to me, too. But I had NEVER been an Idol fanatic in all my years of watching until Season 7, when David Cook hit me over the head and dragged me away, LOL. I became obsessed, and still am, but I’m torn because I love watching American Idol but I NEVER want to be so invested in another contestant again! I sent the article to my husband, with a note saying, “Now you know, and obviously I’m not the only one.” He responded with the quote from the article, “The trick is to … remember to come back out into the light when it’s all over.” My response to him was, “I’m sorry, when I read that, ‘Light On’ started playing in my head…Did you say something??”

  • abbysee

I like idol. I have watched every season. I usually have a favorite, and some years I really get invested. This year was fun for me because for all it’s lunacy here at MJ’s was pretty calm in the seasons aftermath. I think that was because both Davids set the tone on finale night and have not deterred in their public admiration for each other. For me, while not a big fan musically of Cook’s I admire him as a man, because he handled his win like a man. I admire young David because he had a bigger task as the loser, yet not for one second have I noticed one bit of indecision about who he thought should win. That spoke volumes to me as a fan of his, and helped me to get over any disappointment that I might have felt for him. If he wasn’t bothered, I wasn’t bothered. As long as he keeps singing, I’m a happy fan. Losing suited him.

Season two soured the way it did, imho when Clay lost and immediately told Ruben, to paraphrase, you might have won tonight, but I will beat you on the charts. That set in motion a very ugly aferlife that continues to this day. That is why for all it’s lunacy, I don’t think this season will play out like that. David Cook and David Archuleta set the tone, and for the most part, their fans followed. There is always a faction of nutsoidism and fanaticism, (like the people who comment on every article thread, but they are just bored, lol) but this season, seems to be a turning point in that respect.

I will watch again this year. Frankly I think just watching the show, and blogging here is fun. I don’t follow folk around on tour, and I don’t set up shop at fan boards, and I think that is a healthy way to watch. It’s fun, but it’s not your life. When it becomes that important, it scary.

  • Lu

In truth, I never really cared until Season 5. Vestiges of what came over me that year – actually much more so after the season was over – still remain

LOL! Boy can I relate to this! I’m a total AI junkie and LOVE MJ’s blog but AI5 is far and away my fave and the only season I ever voted for a contestant. Now, if you do have a favorite and want me to throw some votes their way, I’ll do that. Just ask PJ!

I can’t wait for pics of Gina Glocksen’s wedding. It sounds like it’s going to be beautiful.

I’m also a big college football junkie so I guess I’ll be catching some idol performances on the bowl games… yay!

    LMAO!

That was a well written article. I was reading it and thinking “true” “true” “true”.
I think the internet has a really big responsiblity in the investment by some viewers and in keeping the fanwars/discussions/etc after the show is over. I’ve always watched idol, I’d care before but it was just that nice TV show. This year, back in the semi finals I liked Cook but I was a bit intrigued by the guy, not knowing if he was an arrogant jerk or just a cool guy in a different environment, so I decided to google him and find something more about the personality. I ended up in blogs, message boards and all that stuff that really give a new life to American Idol. I was caught up in that and I haven’t let go since then. It can be fascinating.
It gets a bit insane most of the time, a really guilty pleasure. And next season I want to go back to enjoying the show and not getting as much into it, but I know I’ll be reading the blogs, the articles and all that cool stuff I found this year.

And hope Gina has a good day tomorrow.

“You’re on the same team, so save your strength. Believe me, you’re going to need it once you encounter the Fall Out Boy crowd.

“Idol” works the same way. People who don’t care about the show (and they do, in fact, exist) don’t see the difference between David Cook and David Archuleta. All they see are two “American Idol” singers, and they are laughing at you for sniping amongst yourselves.”

^^ This should be etched underneath a photo of the two Davids laughing. Heh. Fun MSNBC article.

I love this quote from the MSNBC article; it really made me laugh

hysterical loyalty to things that ultimately don’t matter in the least

Sure I recognized myself – gnashing teeth over all the lost phone calls on Clay’s line, poor Bo’s game face due to his sickness on finale night and Elliott’s constant battle with the bottom 3. But the craziness does subside after a few tears; you just can’t keep having more and more idols consuming your life and your dollars. I still intend to enjoy the show, but the last couple of years I’ve stopped getting so invested.

The Broadway Year of Taylor Hicks
Soul Patrol Stirs GREASE In 2008

Winner of the fifth season of American Idol, Taylor Hicks contributed greatly to Broadway in 2008. Reports say that Hicks has the lowest selling American Idol winnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album. Even so, in 2008 Hicks played à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Teen Angelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ in GREASE on Broadway. Hicks fans came from all over the country to see his performance. Critics pointed out that Hicks really was only on stage for a very short time. However, fans still praised his performance and ticket sales reflected this fact. Some say, arguably, Hicks saved GREASE from closing on Broadway during the summer of 2008.

Some say, arguably, Hicks saved GREASE from closing on Broadway during the summer of 2008.

That has to feel good to Taylor, idols most beleaguered winner. I’m happy he had that kind of impact. I know the show was bleeding badly before he came on board. Good for him.

  • JOJOSIE

Broadway loves Idols. Broadway magazine named the top 11 Celebrity turns on Broadway and Clay was 5th and Taylor 6th. Taylor was also named Broadway rookie of the year. I guess sucess on Broadway gives you financial gain and also publicity, maybe job security too.

KUTV News reports that David Archuleta will sing the national anthem next Monday at Governor Huntsman’s second inauguration. David performed the anthem at Huntsman’s first swearing-in four years ago as well.

♦ Apparently, David spent some time in Las Vegas during the holidays. According to Las Vegas Weekly, David was spotted in attendance of the Blue Man Group’s late show at the Venetian.

David Archuleta is featured in the new Seventeen magazine…

He may be new at dating, but his advice (and songs!) make him seem like a pro.

Last year you told Seventeen you hadn’t had your first kiss yet. Any updates?
No! I’m still waiting for the right moment. I think so many people want to rush things – they want to rush hanging out, they want to rush making out – and then it’s like they don’t even know the person they’re with.

    You’re such a romantic!
I think girls get a bad rep for being emotional all the time. But I think a lot of guys are too. A lot of my guy friends, they really feel things deeply.

What else don’t girls know about guys?
Girls tend to blame themselves – even when the guy is the one who messed up. My girl friends will tell me about something a guy did, and I’m like ‘that’s not your fault.’ Sometimes guys are just dork faces. But girls don’t see it that way.

Why do you think that is?
Guys and girls think about relationships differently. Girls say a guy is ‘so sweet’ and analyze everything he does. And a guy is just like ‘yeah, she’s hot.’ That’s why you have to take it slow. People want to be in love so badly that they throw themselves in it, without stopping to figure out if it’s real.

What would be your perfect Valentine’s Day?
I don’t think I’ve ever done anything on Valentine’s Day! But I think I’d like riding in a gondola. And then afterward going to get sherbet. I like to keep things light and fun!

I was usually a lurker, but finally decided to sign-up because of Carson Daley’s comments.

I am kinda sick and tired of people dissing American Idol contestants and the show. American Idol has produced some the best singers and artists since the creation of the show, from Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry and David Cook in Rock, to David Archuleta and Clay Aiken in Pop and Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Josh Gracian, and Bucky Covington in Country Western to Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks in R/B. Nolt to mention singers in Christian music and Adult contempary. Hudson became a movie star because of her appearance on Idol, plus she won an Oscar, something only a few industry singers has ever done.

The AI singers can outsing some of the industry performers LIVE. I have heard many industry ‘artists’ sing live and they do not hold a candle to even some of the losers of American Idol.

When will these people learn that American Idol singers are just as good, no in fact better than some of the so-called ‘artists’ that the music industry tries to force feed on the public.

The big difference is that we the fans pick the winners and who should get a chance to record a cd and be famous, not the record industry.

So Carson Daly you better get used to seeing many of the American Idol ARTISTS winning and making music the public loves.

…oh and thanks for saying that…now I know I will now watch the other channels New Years DaY celebration.

sorry I just had to get that off my chest…lol

Sanjaya Malakar Has Carson Daly’s Vote
Posted on April 13th, 2007 10:27 AM by ClayMate
    Filed under: Sanjaya Malakar
Carson Daly admits he’s addicted to American Idol à ¢Ãƒâ€šÃ¢â€š ¬Ãƒâ€š’ and its surprising breakout star.

“I’m just enjoying it now because of this whole idea that Sanjaya might win,” Daly told People magazine Thursday at a party for the five-year anniversary of his show Last Call at Social Hollywood.

Daly is impressed by the style of Sanjaya Malakar more than his singing skills. No real surprise there.

“I think there’s a lot of people like me that may not watch it every single week or have a deep passion for American Idol but now we’re hooked,” Daly said, “because of this idea that this guy’s got a new haircut every day.”

Daly also revealed his strategy for seeing the 17-year-old win it all. Asked if he had voted for Sanjaya, he replied: “No, I haven’t, but I plan on it repeatedly.”

So it appears Carson Daley watched American Idol…lol

Speaking very generally. American Idol fans facilitate the culture of ridicule of the Idols. It starts with the show inviting us to laugh at people. Simon and the judges add more fuel to the fire by their comments. The message boards parrot what the judges say and posters throw in their own opinions about idols being losers, cheesy, greasy, canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing, full of sour grapes, pitchy, stupid, arrogant and other type comments, yet some American Idols fans are put off by the media when their own words are thrown back at them when the vitriol is towards a favorite. The vitriol is only funny and applauded when ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s directed at someone thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not liked.
