Steven Tyler’s visit to Hingham turns charitable

Looks like “American Idol’’ judge Steven Tyler is home for the holidays.

tyler.jpgThe Aerosmith frontman, who lives in Marshfield, was at Whole Foods in Hingham on Monday night doing some holiday shopping with his model daughter, Mia.

When Tyler got to the cash register, he put smiles on the faces of employees (including Julie Morin, shown here with Tyler) when he decided to buy 100 Feed Kids Now bags, which are $5 bags filled with nutritious foods that are distributed to children at the Quincy Crisis Center.

Whole Foods marketing team leader Tina Barber said Tyler’s visit was a surprise, not a staged, do-gooding photo-op.

Jennifer Hudson “Feeling Good” About Weight Loss

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – She won’t say how much weight she lost, but singer/actress Jennifer Hudson will say that in the nine months she’s been a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers, she has never felt better.

Hudson is even singing about it in a new tune, “Feeling Good,” which is part of an ad campaign the dieting firm is launching on December 26 to coincide with its new nutritional PointsPlus program.

“Basically (the song) is the perfect way to describe this journey and how it’s left me feeling,” Hudson told Reuters. “If I could bottle everything inside me and tell others to help motivate them, then this is it.”

Will 2011 be the year reality TV dies?

Reality TV is dead. Toast. Six feet under. Kaput. Had a fork stuck in it — one of those big serving forks, too, not a little oyster fork.

Well, not so fast. Reality TV is still breathing, even though “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” spent some time in the emergency room last season. When the juggernauts feel pain, so do the rest of us. And the genre.

The reality about the future of reality TV? We have judges of our own who have an opinion on the subject.

“Last time she [Lopez] had contact with Ojani was when Ben Affleck was around and Ben Affleck actually found out a lot things about Ojani,” his girlfriend Claudia Vazquez told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive video interview Tuesday.

“He [Affleck] was very jealous. He actually told her to fire him [Noa]; no reason. Ojani could not be close to Jennifer when Ben was around.”

Paula Abdul Talks Dance, Idol and Reteaming With Simon Cowell

TV Guide Magazine: Live to Dance will go up against Idol on Wednesdays, starting January 19. How do you feel about that?
Abdul: I haven’t really thought about it much. They’re two different shows, and I think there’s an audience for both. [Idol is] a juggernaut that you can’t deny, and my show’s a new show that I hope people are charmed by.

TV Guide Magazine: Are you feeling the pressure, though?
Abdul: I would be lying if I didn’t say that I’m totally invested in this [show] and yeah, there’s a part of me that does have that anxious nervous energy. But I thrive on that!

just a heads up; chelsea lately is on E! at 11pm, not VH1 :)

  • BootStar

So with the two giants of the genre dealing with flak, it is tempting to conclude that reality television is under fire.

“I don’t think either issue damages reality TV overall,” said Poniewozik, “because in a way, each incident is about something that is inherent to reality TV, and even part of its appeal. Reality TV, especially shows involving voting, have involved a meta-layer of analysis of the voting, speculation about how the nature of the production might affect the judgment, doubting the wisdom and integrity of one’s fellow viewers, and arguing over what ‘deserving’ to win a reality show means.

    Ain’t THAT the truth? ;-)

  • istersay

Crystal on Chelsea Lately should be a lot of fun to watch, I can’t wait.

So after all of that, dude actually was separated. Crazy.

  • gangreen29

So after all of that, dude actually was separated. Crazy.

Yeah, but I doubt Fantasia will ever see any apologies for all that vitriol thrown her way.

Reality TV is not dead. People have been claiming that since Survivor’s second season. Yawn.

  • Elliegrll

Reality TV is not dead. People have been claiming that since Survivor’s second season. Yawn.

And every single year of idol’s existence. Even Nigel thought AI’s ratings were going to fall a few years ago, and that’s why he left.

  • tripp_ncwy

According to a tweet from AINow, Lee is “unavailable” to perform at the Miami Dolphins tailgate concert 12/26.

  • sma11ie

So after all of that, dude actually was separated. Crazy.

Yeah, but I doubt Fantasia will ever see any apologies for all that vitriol thrown her way.

The media is crazy. I was watching the AI Welcome Home special the other day, and I remember when Fantasia was saying how she always hoped to make North Carolina proud, and that they have her back, no matter what happens. That comment made me wonder about the lawsuit, and whether NC was on her side on that or not. Well, at least now we know they tried in her favor. Congrats to her.

  • OvenMitt

I think reality TV is defintely waivering. The market is so saturated, and some of the most ridiculous premises have come and gone. Fox Reality Channel folded (the one that had the extensive coverage of American Idol), and even celebrity reality shows can’t last (David Hasselhoff’s show went off the air after just two episodes). Sure, reality shows aren’t going to go away just yet, but they aren’t as thrilling as they once were, at least not to me.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

According to a tweet from AINow, Lee is “unavailable” to perform at the Miami Dolphins tailgate concert 12/26.

He’s probably decided to spend Christmas with his family in Chicago.

That date was never confirmed by Lee’s peeps in the first place. I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I wasn’t going to put that date on my calendar, until I got a few emails from Lee fans. I should have followed my initial instinct and waited.

  • Elliegrll

and some of the most ridiculous premises have come and gone

But, this has always been the case. It’s really no different from some scripted shows working, while others are cancelled.

  • sma11ie

But, this has always been the case. It’s really no different from some scripted shows working, while others are cancelled.

I agree. I WISH some of the most ridiculous and inane reality shows like Jersey Shore, that always-on Kardashian show, and any of the Desperate Housewives series would just go away from my pop culture conscious, but unfortunately, they show no signs of wavering in popularity at all. Ugh…

  • BootStar

Football is the king of “reality television” right now:

If it wasn’t clear before, this season has underscored the point, italicized it and shouted it from the rooftops: N.F.L. football is by far the most popular form of programming on American television.

The evidence: Of the 20 highest-rated telecasts of any kind so far this television season, 18 have been N.F.L. games on CBS, NBC or Fox. In terms of the best of 2010, nothing else comes close. Of the 50 highest-rated programs during the calendar year, 27 have been N.F.L. games, including 8 of the top 10.

And at a time when little or nothing on television increases its audience, the N.F.L. is still finding new viewers. NBC’s Sunday night games are up 10 percent this season. With three games left, “Sunday Night Football” is certain to complete the fall as the most-watched offering in prime time, the first time the N.F.L.’s prime-time showcase (which began in 1970 as “Monday Night Football”) has ever attained the top ranking.

The Top Attraction on TV? No Script, but Plenty of Action

  • tierbee

I’m much more likely to watch football than the vast majority of reality TV. I have my favorites reality-wise but they are all singing (Sing-Off, Idol) and dance (SYTYCD). That’s really it for me. I watch a ton of football. My husband claims I “watch more sports than a dude.” Heh. (OK, so soccer is my first love and I watch THAT whenever possible, and college hoops – go Heels – and Caps hockey…)

  • tierbee

Hey, where are my Street Corner Symphony/Cook fan fellow poster-ettes? In my poking around through Facebook and iTunes (’cause when I find a new band/artist, I am thorough in my poking around) I found that Jeremy (lead vocalist) wrote a couple songs for/with Better Than Ezra so there is a “degrees of Cook” connection. Just wanted to mention because it kinda made me laugh ;)

  • tinawina

Yeah, but I doubt Fantasia will ever see any apologies for all that vitriol thrown her way.

Nope. Not at all. But that’s the way it is.

But it just goes to show one of the huge downsides of being in the public eye. As much coverage as all of this got, that tidbit will likely get very little. So there will be lots of people left with the impression that she snatched this guy out of his happy home.

I found that Jeremy (lead vocalist) wrote a couple songs for/with Better Than Ezra so there is a “degrees of Cook” connection.

    LOL

And now I really have to get something done. I wish they’d get the damn “Fix You” performance up on iTunes so I’d quit watching it online. Hee hee.

(This is a very nice distraction from being crabby about having no new Cook music, I must say)

Sorry, you know I love ya, tierbee, but I think I saw one and a half performances from SCS and my only take-away, other than the fact that they were just okay, was that the lead singer’s colored sunglasses made him look like a total tool. Only Bono gets a pass on that, as far as I’m concerned, lol. I may have to check out some of their better performances without looking at the guy’s stupid glasses though, and maybe I’d change my mind ;).

  • tierbee

OK, one more post (or so) – hahaha, Cook.

  • tierbee

I may have to check out some of their better performances without looking at the guy’s stupid glasses though, and maybe I’d change my mind .

LOL! Hmm, what did you watch? My favorites are the last “Fix You,” and then “Come On Eileen” for cheesy fun, “Down On the Corner,” and I liked “Creep.” So if you already saw those and didn’t like ‘em I can’t help you, hee. But it’s all good, we still have David :)

  • sma11ie

    Hmm, what did you watch?

Maybe it was “Come On Eileen”? That title sounds familiar. Or maybe it wasn;t any of the ones you listed, and it was something else entirely. I’ll try to check out Creep and Fix You, since I inherently like those songs.

LOL at Cook’s tweet. Yes, tierbee, we’ll always have David. Now… where’s that album?! Have a great Christmas with your family, but get back to work soon to finish it up, okay? Tick tock, Mr. Cook… heh. In seriousness, not sure what’s going on anymore, what with Kelly fans talking about the Sony executive shake-up affecting albums next year, etc. Fingers crossed it all works out okay for Cook’s release.

Ok tierbee I am going to feed your obsession…what is Cook’s connection to Better than Ezra?

  • sma11ie

Not tierbee, but Cook cowrote Avalanche from DCTR with Kevin Griffin (sp?), and apparently, they’ve struck up a friendship, since Cook was invited to BTE’s annual charity event in New Orleans last year, where he bowled a bunch, played a couple songs and helped auction stuff off for the charity (sorry, the charity event’s name escapes me!). Kevin also made a cameo on one of Cook’s writing session vlogs last year (the one where he tells the story of running into a glass wall, I think), so it seems they are cowriting again for this album. But who knows if it’ll make it though.

I’m glad you did it LOL , cuz i’m a fan of SCS, i went to the site of ‘Ten out Tenn’ , interesting note in Jeremy page ”Lister released an EP, Just One Day on Warner Bros and has since toured with Brett Dennen and Colbie Calliat as well as selling out his own shows in and around the Nashville area. His song “Just One Day” was featured on MTV’s The Hills, and recently performed at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, “Where Music Meets Film.” Lister was voted as Nashville’s Best Singer-Songwriter of 2008 in the Nashville Scene Awards

”Just One Day ” has four songs the title track, Fit, Hostage, Ready to Fall $3.99 in itunes , the sound is more alternative to me? i like ‘Just one day’ and ‘Hostage’…….and the EP cover lol. :)

  • tierbee

tibitibis, I keep listening to “Picturing You,” there’s something really appealing about that song for me.

I seem to have a soft spot for these guys who have been doing their thing for years trying to get a break. It looks like his album has been sitting in limbo for like 2 years now? He mentions in an interview I watched on YouTube (yeah, I’m thorough) that he has two tracks w/Alison Krauss and I really really would love to hear those. Bring them to the light, Warner Brothers!

BTW, the finale songs are up on iTunes now – Jeremy tweeted:
JeremyBlister Monday nights songs are up on iTunes. “Fix You” seems to be doing really well. Everyone should download it. :)

So off to buy “Fix You” via MJs lovely links so I can stop watching the damn thing on YouTube and just listen on my iPod. That performance just really, really moved me. I really liked all the “Songs of Hope” performances, actually. (I’ll probably buy more stuff while I’m there – did pick up Jeremy’s EP, it’s good stuff.)
