Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney Receive Kennedy Center Honors Salute

President Barack and first lady Michelle Obama were on hand today to salute entertainment luminaries Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, country singer Merle Haggard, composer Jerry Herman and dancer Bill T. Jones with the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C.

Hollywood’s A-List was also there to congratulate the honorees, reports the Associated Press. Julia Roberts, John Travolta and Barbara Walters each offered personal reflections of their relationships with Winfrey, and Jennifer Hudson serenaded the CEO of Harpo Productions with “I’m Here” from The Color Purple — Winfrey starred in the film and produced the show on Broadway.

The Kennedy Center Honors airs on CBS Dec. 28

Idol winner surprise guest at Christmas party

Ruben Studdard, who was the season two winner of American Idol, performed for more than 300 people at a local production company’s Christmas party Saturday night.

Axe Productions brought in the AI winner to surprise their employees and clients with a private show.

“It’s always fun to surprise people,” said Studdard. “Hopefully, they won’t boo when I come on stage.”

SIMON COWELL ‘YANKS’ TOP STAFF

TELLY chiefs fear Simon Cowell is secretly poaching key staff from The X Factor to join him on the US version of the show.

He is believed to have drawn up a hit-list of people he would like to take over the pond to help make the £100million launch of The X Factor USA a success.

Among those he wants are the show’s Bafta Award-winning executive producer Andrew Llinares.

Another executive producer, Richard Holloway, has been told he will now have to divide his time between the US and Britain.

Bristol Palin: My Mom Didn’t “Force” Me to Do DWTS

“I will give my friend credit for creativity, and extra points for getting so many ‘facts’ wrong in so few sentences,” she blogged. “Let me be blunt: my mom did not “force” me to go on DWTS. She did not ask me either. The show approached me.”

In a final zinger to Cho, Bristol urged the star to develop a fuller understanding of conservative politics. If that happens, says the teen activist, Cho “would embrace us faster than k.d. lang at an Indigo Girls concert.”

Jennifer Lopez Dishes On ‘Most Fascinating People’ Interview With Barbara Walters

Speaking with WWD, Lopez credited her inclusion on the celeb hot list to a combination of personal and professional endeavors including “the ‘American Idol’ [deal to appear as a judge] and also being a mom and entering back in the scene with the album.”

The singer also admitted that she felt the pressure from the news correspondent during the interview, which airs Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

As for her music career, Lopez recently told reporters during a press conference in Mexico that the lead single from her much-delayed album Love? would be released in January or February of next year. No word on the single’s producer, but it was recently revealed that J. Lo locked studio sessions with RedOne (Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and “Bad Romance”).

Dancing With the Stars Judge: No More Palins!

“I think one Palin was enough for awhile,” Carrie Ann Inaba told me last night at the Trevor Project’s Trevor Live benefit at the Hollywood Palladium. “I think we need to go on a Palin vacation for a minute.”

“Although it was great media attention, I think it was too controversial,” Inaba explained. “I think people got confused about what they were rooting for: Are you voting for dancing on the show or are you voting for a Party?

“I think that made it very uncomfortable for a lot of people who just want to see a dance competition. I like to keep it simple. I think it diluted the nature of the competition.”

Ryan Seacrest Promises A ‘Wild Animal’ On ‘American Idol’ Panel

“We added a wild animal to the panel. There will be a wild animal in one of the seats,” Seacrest told MTV News at KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball 2010 in Los Angeles over the weekend, not specifying who that person is. “I can’t tell you which wild animal, but it was one that was on the ark. So that’s something that’s new. Yes, there’s a total animal.”

Sure, the new judges are one reason to tune in to the coming season, but Seacrest is talking up the talent as well, giving the contestants two thumbs up. “The contestants that we found — we brought more kids back to Hollywood than ever before, there’s like 240 of them, so I think we’ve got a really good shot to find some fantastic [talent],” he explained.

Good luck to Carrie, Kellie, and Danny for the ACAs tonight. Especially Danny on his first-ever nomination for anything like that :)

  • dhunken

Congrats to Carrie, Kellie, and Danny!! Especially Danny. I hope he wins so it helps his visibility and his credibility in country Music. I know he is doing very well but a win wouldn’t hurt and it would get more people interested in listening to his album, which is very good. I love when the idols do well. (for some reason I have extra love for season 8 contestants I think they are all talented and I really like most of them. I realize that’s true for Season 5 and 7 for me too.)

  • sr4mjc

Man, Country has a ton of award shows!

  • indigo15

Good luck to Carrie, Kellie, and Danny! It would be especially great to see Danny win his first big award (and to have it come from the fans). He definitely deserves it and it would definitely put a spotlight on him and his music. I have my fingers crossed for all three of them!

  • asics85

I agree dhunken! As a Danny fan I really appreciate your comment. Your support of all the Idols is awesome.

I am excited for Danny as this is his first award nomination..quite an honor less than a year from his album release last March. Danny fans are so proud of him and how well he has done since coming off the AI stage.

Good luck to Carrie and Kellie tonight as well….hoping to see all three there representing AI at the ACA’s!

  • Indigobunting

Congrats to Carrie, Kellie and Danny on their nominations.

Carrie is of course up for a ton, Kellie maybe two (it’s been a while since I looked at the list) and Danny is up for Best New Artist :)

Trying not to get my hopes up- Danny has stiff competition from the Band Perry who is red hot this fall.

But even if he doesn’t win I’ll be watching, pleased as can be that he was nominated along with the other 4 that had #1 hits. I hope they read all the names and I hope they show his face as he hears it read for his (hopefully first of more) award nomination.
I’m sure he didn’t expect this just a year ago :)

  • RightNow

Definitely props to Carrie and Kelli, but these guys are vets of awards shows now.

IMO, Danny has already won by getting the nomination on his very first time out. It’s an honor for him to be acknowledged with such great artists as The Band Perry and Corbin Eastin.

It should be a fun show tonight.

  • HermeticallySealed

Wow, Bristol’s understanding of politics seems to be about on the level of her knowledge of birth control.

I know people can be fairly crass, but I would certainly hope no one would ever boo a musical guest at a corporate function.

  • gangreen29

Jennifer looks AMAZING. Also, excited about Hollywood starting this week! I can’t wait to hear how it all shakes out.

  • gangreen29

    Also,

    Snow Day!

  • Kirsten

And accusations of a fix were immediately sparked after fans voted for the bottom two, but weren’t given a say on who would get the boot.
    [SNIP]
This was after host Dermot O’Leary told viewers on Saturday night’s episode: ‘Your votes and your votes alone can get your favourite act safely through to the final.

And Mary said she was only told at the last minute that the format had changed after she missed her sounds check because she was ill.

IDK. This sounds super fishy. Does X-Factor always feature so much blatant fixing (e.g. auto-tune gate and sudden rule changes to favor certain contestants)? I see there are lots of complaints from the British fans, but does that ever change anything or effect ratings? I guess not since Simon keeps doing whatever he wants while people line up to pay to vote.

  • sma11ie

I saw an ACA commercial the other day, and didn’t see Carrie’s face flash by along with the other advertised acts to expect. I’d think they’d hype it up if she’s going to be there as one of the big names, so I’m thinking she’s on tour and not attending?

  • jpfan

In a final zinger to Cho, Bristol urged the star to develop a fuller understanding of conservative politics. If that happens, says the teen activist, Cho “would embrace us faster than k.d. lang at an Indigo Girls concert.”

I’m pretty sure Bristol Palin doesn’t have a clue who either K.D. Lang or the Indigo Girls are. It’s well known that her Mom employs a writer who produces zingers for the whole family. (Although it’s actually funnier to believe Bristol knows who the Indigo Girls are. ;) )

  • steph6449

Carrie’s touring through the 20th, I believe. She’s not listed to perform on the ACAs, but they have some other big name acts who will be on tonight one way or another.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised and pretty impressed with the quality of the acts who will be appearing for the first-time run of the ACA show. (Keith Urban, Reba, Toby Keith just to name a few, and Trace Adkins hosting.)

I’m assuming Danny will be there, but we haven’t seen any travel reports (airport stalkers/etc, lol) to verify.

Of course I hope Danny wins but I’m glad he was nominated either way. Danny, Easton or TBP would all be strong contenders for fan-voted best new artist IMO.

Can’t knock a chance for prime-time TV exposure. It will be interesting to see what the viewership is- are people burned out from the AMAs and CMAs? It does seem like there is some good entertainment lined up.

  • Jx223

Good Luck to the idols nominated for ACA awards. I hope that Danny wins in his category.

  • gangreen29

Either way, it was a good line.

Not really. Pretty much tired old stereotype jokes are lame, not funny. That’s what happens when you have 50 year old white dudes who have no cultural frame of reference for the last ten years writing jokes lol (Jay Leno). Now HermeticallySealed’s joke about Bristol upthread…that is funny.

  • jpfan

I think a woman is writing the Palin snark. ;) But who could honestly believe Bristol could make a joke about the Indigo Girls. They’re pretty obscure. I mean Lacey on DWTS didn’t even know who The Eagles were!

  • gangreen29

I think a woman is writing the Palin snark. But who could honestly believe Bristol could make a joke about the Indigo Girls. They’re pretty obscure. I mean Lacey on DWTS didn’t even know who The Eagles were!

I don’t think they are that obscure. Wasn’t there something else she didn’t know too? I’m always amazed at people around my age who are ignorant of everything from before they were like 12. How did they not just absorb that cultural information at least by osmosis lol? It makes me think that someone like Lacey who doesn’t know who The Eagles are is probably a bit dim.

  • girlygirl

I didn’t think we needed another awards show, especially another one for country music. Way too much overkill.

But hey, since we do, good luck tonight to Danny, Carrie and Kellie!

  • Indigobunting

Ok, I can understand not knowing about the Indigo Girls, but the Eagles??

    Come on!

  • lili_anne7

I’m pretty sure Bristol Palin doesn’t have a clue who either K.D. Lang or the Indigo Girls are.

I’m just a couple of years older then Bristol, and I had no clue who these people were. I had to look them up.

  • Montavilla

Cho “would embrace us faster than k.d. lang at an Indigo Girls concert.”

I don’t really understand the line. Who is doing the embracing? Is Cho embracing k.d. Lang, or is Lang embracing someone else? And is there something about the Indigio Girls that induces extra-fast embracing?

Basically, all Bristol Palin is saying here is , “Cho is gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.”

  • SpenserJ

Basically, all Bristol Palin is saying here is , “Cho is gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.”

And, she required a ghost writer to say it :). Boy, those Palin kids sure are fond of the gay slurs & stereotypes.

  • tierbee

I don’t think they are that obscure.

Yeah, I think the Indigo Girls are pretty obscure. I have loved them since high school but if I didn’t know who they were already, I don’t know how I’d hear about them now except word of mouth. Love, love them, though!

  • Hazehel

I see there are lots of complaints from the British fans, but does that ever change anything or effect ratings?

Certainly not the ratings. The amazing thing about the show is that the rating keeps going up all through the season, unlike American Idol where the ratings usually dip after the season premiere.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_X_Factor_(UK_series_7)#Ratings

(to get an idea about the rating multiple the number by 5 which would give an equivalent ratings for US since there are 5 x more people in US.)

The rating this season is well up from the previous seasons and this season might well be most successful yet.

  • Lucy1234

Good luck to Carrie, Kellie and Danny tonight. I hope they all win and happy they were nominated. Love to see Idol alums nominated for industry awards – shows they have some credibility.

  • sma11ie

And most of them are exactly what most other awards shows are: an industry congratulating itself.

Speaking of which, can’t wait til the Oscars, lol! James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosting? Cool! Heh. Movie nerd here.

I’m a few years older than Bristol, and I only recently heard of Indigo Girls. I don’t even remember how. I think they were playing a show at some venue I was looking at because of other music, and I looked them up.

I don’t really understand the line. Who is doing the embracing? Is Cho embracing k.d. Lang, or is Lang embracing someone else? And is there something about the Indigo Girls that induces extra-fast embracing?

Basically, all Bristol Palin is saying here is , “Cho is gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.”

Heh… Yeah, like I said, not that personally familiar with the Indigo Girls, but I know K.D. Lang, and from what I looked up on IG, I didn’t think their music seemed that similar. Sooo… is it one of those “queer music” is all the same comments or what?

  • http://twitter.com/kenostroff negativo

Basically, all Bristol Palin is saying here is , “Cho is gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.”

Pardon my insensitivity, but why is that a problem? It’s like making tall jokes, short jokes, fat jokes, skinny jokes, blonde jokes…who cares? I think it was hilarious. Making jokes about Palin’s intelligence is certainly a mocking type of joke, too. That’s what jokes are all about; making fun of people with the use of stereotypes.

  • girlygirl

Kris & crew are headed to NYC today. He has some sort of private gig lined up there (nice that the 2 Katys are joining them — NYC at Xmas time? Very cool!)

  • tinawina

Sooo… is it one of those “queer music” is all the same comments or what?

I don’t think it was a joke about the music, but more like “kd lang is gay so she would embrace the indigo girls cause they are gay too”. I don’t think it was really offensive per se, I could see Margret Cho making a similar joke.

That said, I’m pretty sure Ms. Cho knows all about Ms. Palin’s (and conservative in general) politics. Support of civil unions aside, I think the opposing gay marriage thing would still be a sticking point for Margret. LOL

That’s what jokes are all about; making fun of people with the use of stereotypes.

Well that’s not what ALL jokes are about, and some jokes like that can go to far, so I don’t think I can’t get behind that statement. YMMV of course.

  • anovich

It’s pretty cold here in NY right now. We actually had sno flurries earlier this morning and are running colder than normals right now. I hope they’ve packed warm stuff if they’re going to be outdoors for any extended amount of time (like if they want to go see the big tree in Rockefeller Center, etc.)

The Palin BS aside, your statement isn’t entirely true. Its considered poor taste to make ethnic or religious jokes. Being tall, short, bald, skinny or fat are universal traits throughout all cultures. When jokes are used to attempt to diminish or call people out as different, I have issues with it. And for the record I hate PMS jokes & cringe at Red Neck jokes as well.

Is it weird to say that JHud almost looks TOO skinny now? Her head looks much too large for her body in that picture posted above, IMO. She’s on the cusp of it getting out of hand. For the record, I thought she was beautiful during the Dreamgirls/SATC movie era, but I understand her wanting to lose weight to be healthy and feel confident. Hope she doesn’t take it too far, though!

  • sr4mjc

Is it weird to say that JHud almost looks TOO skinny now?

I agree. She looks great, hopefully she stops where she is. Been there, it gets a little addictive watching the scale go down.

  • Cate

Man, that rules out about 99% of all the good humor in this world! I’ve never heard a good joke that didn’t mock out somebody for something.

I’ve never tolerated those kind of “jokes”. I made my children substitute the words Silly Billy for whatever stereotypic term the joke depended on. If it was still funny, it was a real joke. If it wasn’t, the joke depended completely on accepting the stereotype. Remember the Q-tip jokes about the famine in Ethiopia? I cannot find humor that demeans or belittles others.

I was in a bar once with some girlfriends and we were being constantly bothered by some random guy, a Coast Guard member, who couldn’t believe we’d rather enjoy talking amongst ourselves than to him. He told a joke about two black women standing on a corner…implying they were prostitutes. I told the joke back to him substituting two female Coast Guard members standing on a corner. He actually went ballistic. It suddenly wasn’t funny anymore and, for a moment, I thought he was going to sock me! He had insisted it was not an ethnic joke, but his tune changed very quickly!

So I guess my point is – I like jokes that are intrinsically funny (and I do have a good sense of humor), but are not dependent on stereotypes.

  • HermeticallySealed

This^. If the joke requires a stereotype to get to the punchline, it’s not a good joke.

  • Jx223

Is it weird to say that JHud almost looks TOO skinny now? Her head looks much too large for her body in that picture posted above, IMO. She’s on the cusp of it getting out of hand.

I don’t think it is weird. IMO, this latest picture of her looks nice, but in some other pictures I’ve seen she looks like is starting to lose too much weight. Especially since she’s kind of on the tall side, and she has a larger frame. It’s good that she’s trying to be healthier, but I don’t think she needs to lose too much weight. It could end up making her look not as good, especially given her height/frame.

I guess not since Simon keeps doing whatever he wants while people line up to pay to vote.

What’s weird to me is that it’s put up with to the degree it is. As has been pointed out, it isn’t negatively effecting the ratins. I don’t know if Simon is thinking of having the same degree of obvious interference on the US show, but I think he might want to re-think it. I don’t know if the US audience will put up with it here, or at least that much, right away. Maybe if he eases us into it after a few years.

About the whole thing, I think it’s pretty obvious Mary got screwed. Not that she had a chance at the win, but still, seems pretty obvious Cher was out this last week, and TPTB wanted her in the finals, so changed the rules so that she could advance. But I also don’t think Cher will win, so at least there is that.

Yeah. Given the US audience’s predilection to vote against whomever is pimped lately, I think he might want to consider soft pedaling stuff for a while.

US voters like to keep the illusion of choosing their own winner, I think. Manipulation is fine as long as you leave room for plausible deniability. Heh.
