Charice dating David Archuleta?

During her guesting on “Billboard’s Live Q&A,” the issue came up after a fan, who noted how Charice sings with so much emotion, asked if she is thinking of Archuleta whenever she performs a love song.

The Filipino songstress replied: “What a question, what a question. First of all, I’m friend with David Archuleta and he is a great guy. Second, singing love songs with emotion, I think it’s part of being a singer. Every time you sing, you should feel the song even if you’re not in love. You just have to undestand the words.”

Utah vocal teacher beats cancer — to claim the national spotlight

It has been a decade since Justin Williams was diagnosed with stage-three testicular cancer. Now it’s time for him to be center stage.

Williams, 28, of Saratoga Springs, is finally ready to embrace the limelight, now that his cancer is in remission and thanks to national exposure on “American Idol” last January. His first single, “Fly,” was released last week, and he’s back in the studio prepping tracks for an upcoming full-length album.

Julianne and Ryan’s Paris Holiday a Ring-less Affair

So your boyfriend invites you to travel thousands of miles to spend the holidays with him and his parents in Paris, and he doesn’t propose. What’s a girl to do?

This is exactly where Julianne Hough is after a romantic vacation with boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest and his family in France. Visiting restaurants, art galleries and shops, as well as a sold-out Monet exhibition, where the group drank fine wine, ogled fine art, bought new shoes but (sad face) didn’t celebrate a new addition to the family.

Kara DioGuardi Writing Memoir About American Idol

This one should be a page turner. Former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi will release a memoir in 2011 titled A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, And American Idol, RadarOnline.com has learned.

DioGuardi – who infamously once bared her bikini clad body on the hit show – left in somewhat mysterious circumstances at the end of Idol’s tenth season.

And now it looks like she wants to set the record straight about what life was really like working with Simon Cowell and her fellow judges.

The well-known song-writer claims her autobiography “is meant to inspire others to take chances to succeed.”

‘Glee’s’ Chris Colfer Shows Off His Ninja Skills on ‘Conan’ (VIDEO)

Chris uses two sai as his weapon of choice, patterning himself after the Ninja Turtle named “Raphael.” (Again with the turtles!) By this point, Conan looked nervous/cautiously optimistic, but then Colfer stood up … and revealed his dazzling ninja skills! The young actor spun the razor-sharp blades in both hands, whirling them in a seamless hypnotic blur. Everything was going great! And then Chris sat back down again …

Bristol Aside, Has Dancing Jumped the Shark?

Bristol Palin’s implausible run to third place on Dancing with the Stars surprised us all, really angered one guy and had many fans citing it as a “jump-the-shark” moment for the show. But has Dancing traded ballroom heels for water skis for other reasons?

Take Sarah Palin’s eldest daughter out of the equation (or imagine she wasn’t on Season 11 at all!) and you are still left with a season overstuffed with gimmick after gimmick, week after week. Coming off a strong Season 10, producers kept everyone — contestants included — on their toes with new twists, such as Acoustic Week (with a round stage, natch), Rock ‘n’ Roll Week, TV Theme Week, and the much ballyhooed and successful Instant Dance, in which dancers received their music 20 minutes before hitting the stage.

Lee, I think you may have had something in your throat there a few times…

I need some serious ear bleach after listening to Lee’s version. ugh

Heh, Beiber’s acoustic isn’t so acoustic. LOL

Adam acoustic cd review (also justin biebers review!)

That’s a really good review for both Adam and Beiber. I can’t wait till I get my copy.

  • leome

What is that Lee version? Boy is like out of breathe during the whole time, I can understand better is breathing than the words leaving his mouth. And overall everything is just… wrong.
Gonna listen to some Pat a Pan now. i need to clear my ears.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m not sure that releasing that rendition of Lee’s OHN will benefit him much, especially since many of his fans aren’t keen on that version.

  • Kirsten

So your boyfriend invites you to travel thousands of miles to spend the holidays with him and his parents in Paris, and he doesn’t propose. What’s a girl to do?

Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t really expect my boyfriend to bring his parents along when he is going to propose. What century is this author living in?

In fact, I think that if my boyfriend did have his parents in tow when he proposed, I might just run the other way.

Hopping off to Paris is something that Ryan can afford to do at the drop of a hat. If he wants to propose in Paris, he can do it when the parents are safely at home.

  • aa618892

Love that review of Adam’s CD. Having JB release an acoustic CD at the same time is working in Adam’s favor because he gets more attention through the competition some press has already created. This would not have happened without JB. I love it!

Not just you. Plus, isn’t she only 22 years old? And, they’ve only been dating a few months. What is it with these gossip rags always wanting to marry young starlets off so quickly?

Lee’s rendition of OHN is truly just awful.

  • Joyed

I’m still not convinced that the Ryan/Julianne thing is a real relationship vs. a publicity stunt. Well, whatever makes them happy, I guess.

Lee’s rendition of OHN is truly just awful.

I actually felt the arrangement was an interesting interpretation overall (and it is one of my fav Christmas songs) – but some of the vocal choices were kinda terrible, especially towards the end. I hated the big notes on “night”, I hated that he pronounced “night” as “noight”, and I did not like the vocal breaks he added into those notes. He just needs to keep this song in his sweet spot and not make it so much of a hybrid of his jazzier take and the more soaring original – it doesn’t suit him.

  • car3278sweet

Just listened to Lee’s rendition of one of my all-time fav Christmas songs.

It is no longer a fav.

I can forgive the boy for the truly awful NA he sang at the Giants game a week or so ago. Hey. It was cold outside, etc. But this? OHN is sacred in so many ways. Lee’s version makes me want to get down on my knees and pray. Pray that he will never sing this again.

What I truly, truly cannot understand is why the heck RCA thought it was a good plan to release this and promote it – when they should be destroying every copy in existence. All of us have bad days. Why is Lee’s record company promoting his “bad day”?

    Unbelievable.

  • istersay

    Ouch Lee

  • rincekt

I’m a huge Lee Dewyze fan but have to agree that the studio version of OHN is butchered. It’s too fast, with clipped lyrics and heavy breathing at the end of lines.

What a travesty that a version like this should have been released when Lee did a stunning rendition of OHN at Graceland, absolutely soul-touching. See link.

Surely this is the arrangement that should have been recorded for release. I would have been first in line to buy it. What were RCA thinking?!

  • BootStar

What’s the age difference between Seacrest and Julianne Hough, 14 years? Can you imagine if Paula (or Kara) were dating a dude 14 years her junior? The press would be going wild with “cougar” stories.

Same thing with Simon Cowell and his love interests: Terri Seymour is 15 years younger; Mezhgan Hussainy is 14 years younger than Cowell.

Not that I believe for one second that Simon has any plans to marry Mezhgan … or that Ryan Seacrest is straight!

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

Why is Lee’s record company promoting his “bad day”?

Bad Day? Beautiful Day? Maybe the memo to the PR team just read “promote Lee’s BD recording” and they were confused. It’s the only explanation I can come up with.

  • BootStar

Why is Lee’s record company promoting his “bad day”?

Wonderful review for Adam’s acoustic CD. Looks like it was sent out to more than Idol bloggers.

Just bought my copy yesterday. And I had to spring for the poster. The original printing of the CD is sold out. So yeah for Adam.

And I’m happy that Michael Sarver was able to release his album. I honestly felt bad for the guy last week. I bought Little Drummer Boy and I think I”m going to pick up a couple more. Lee’s OHN I’ll pass on.

  • tinawina

Not that I believe for one second that Simon has any plans to marry Mezhgan … or that Ryan Seacrest is straight!

    LMAO

  • gabilan

Ok, I’m usually firmly in the “Lee is boring and why the hell can’t he sing in tune” camp, but I’m going to be the odd one out and say I actually kinda, sorta like Lee’s OHN on All Access. OHN is not particularly sacred to me as a song, so I appreciate his making it more interesting to my ears. I thought the live Graceland version linked here was boring and more of the Lee I’m not at all interested in from AI. The only song/snippet on Lee’s CD I’ve liked is Brooklyn Bridge. But that one I think I’ll like a lot.

Of the plethora of OHNs on that other thread, I liked Archie’s about the best… go figure.

  • sr4mjc

Surely this is the arrangement that should have been recorded for release. I would have been first in line to buy it. What were RCA thinking?!

Well that’s true too, but he doesn’t even sound good autotuned. At least Katy and Rihanna do. Swifty never sounds good to me in any case though.

  • girlygirl

Is RCA actually going to release Lee’s OHN as a single for people to buy? Because, that is just an awful rendition. Why All-Access is pushing it, IDK, unless RCA gave them a boatload of payola. Why isn’t RCA focused on promoting Lee’s ACTUAL single? This seems very strange to me. I could see this if Lee didn’t have an actual single or album to promote (say he was in beteeen albums), but this is just odd.

Also, did anyone see the rumor floating around twitter late last night that Lee was going to go out on tour with David Cook? (evidently was a troll). Yeah, IMO, that wouldn’t have been a good idea

  • sass

Kat appeared on Fox news last nite on the Greg Gutfeld RedEye show

I tivo’ed this show last nite and just saw the show. I am impressed she seems comfortable with all those guys discussing the current news. She is a kick..joking with the guest and Greg G. Kat sang her original song ‘It’s Not Christmas Without You’

Kat will appear at Boston’s Christmas Tree Lighting on Thursday.

  • Yvonne13

IMO it would be a terrible idea for Lee to tour with David. There are few similarities in their fanbases and I know the Cook group would probably revolt. I have listed to Lee’s OHN several times now, and have to admit, I will give him an A for trying something different. I still think the version released should have been closer to what he actually did at Graceland. It would have been different enough from prior Idols’ attempts to have it stand out, and still have been a decent performance for Lee.

  • Q3

IMO despite what a few people seem to believe (not you GG)… it is important that the idols on major labels recoup some of the cash outlay for their albums, promo, and videos. If this become a sellable product (or released to radio) it will show how desperate they are to make some sort of profit by taking whatever buzz they can.

  • cwm

Great review of Adam’s Acoustic Live EP! I love what he said about how good Adam’s acoustic EP is, especially in contrast to what he said about Beiber’s. :-)

  • sr4mjc

I’m sure it was a troll. Cookie needs a release some actual product before tour rumors can start flying around. And I guess things are still hush from the Cook camp?

  • Q3

Is there any schedule for Kelly’s album release yet? Or any word on her lead album single? I guess they will release the single in January after the holidays.

I can forgive the boy for the truly awful NA he sang at the Giants game a week or so ago. Hey. It was cold outside, etc. But this? OHN is sacred in so many ways. Lee’s version makes me want to get down on my knees and pray. Pray that he will never sing this again.

Honestly, your management should only let you sing songs that *suit* *your* *voice* and *style.* There’s no such thing as a song that suits everybody. I’m astonished that they let him, maybe even pushed him, to sing Oh, Holy Night when he’s so obviously not an Oh, Holy Night-type singer. There are plenty of Christmas songs that he could have done a fine job with. Dumb decision on somebody’s part.

  • koshka

IMO it would be a terrible idea for Lee to tour with David.

Well if come spring they both have active HAC hits it might not be the worst thing in the world, except for the little fact that they both should be trying to grow past the Idol label. Touring together will certainly not help that.

Is there any schedule for Kelly’s album release yet? Or any word on her lead album single?

Last time I was on DCO a couple of weeks back someone had posted a breakdown of the typical RCA album/lead single time frame and when the first press releases started to appear. If there is one thing the Cook fandom does well, its research. LOL. Anyway, I don’t remember the details at all because I am a Bad Fan who does not keep up with the Official Site like I should, but maybe someone else could post the info here? Someone who remembers who dug all that up and how to find it again? It could help with the speculation about when we might hear some news concerning Cookie, Kelly and Adam’s next releases.

  • car

Love Adam’s review. But I hardly think that Adam needs JB in order to get attention for his CD. He seems to get press on his own just fine.

  • Q3

There are plenty of Christmas songs that he could have done a fine job with. Dumb decision on somebody’s part.

Song selection should be primarily up to the artist not management. Lee should have known this was not a good song for him to sing. And, if someone said, you will sing, “Oh Holy Night” he should have said, “I think that _________ would be better.”

Too bad Lee didn’t sing something like “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” — he could have arranged it to suit his vocal style. And it is on Elvis’ Christmas Album so it would have been a good Graceland choice.

This deal may have involved a commitment to release the single that was signed before the event. Since it was at Graceland which is owned by CKx and 19 in owned by CKx, just this this could be a bit of “synergy”. I really do not think that RCA would have picked that holiday recording to release unless there was more to the story. But the concert of Lee doing a Christmas single is not a bad idea — just not that song and that singer.

  • Trina

I don’t know what’s so hard to grasp about Ryan and Julianne *shrug* As someone who initially did think the whole thing was a publicity stunt I no longer think that (I never bought the gay thing though). A lot of Hollywood romances reach a point where you can kinda tell the difference between real and for show. I dunno, when you start spending holidays together with that person and your parents, it feels real. Its not like he’s taking her all over red carpetsAn it seems the paps are seeking them out if they dare spend time together. Maybe I’m just naïve but I have no problem believing they’re happy and in love. And with Ryan’s hectic career no rush at all saying “I do”. JMO.

Maybe RCA is releasing OHN as something they hope can get Lee some spins while the freeze holds SS off. Problem is when even fans are saying its a pretty bad version, it may not be wise.

Sorta OT but I’m going to the tree lighting tonight. Sigh 2 years ago DC sang the most gorgeous version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Xmas there. Swoon. Still gives me chills.

  • koshka

Well Kris & Lee will be doing a Xmas show together 12/13 in Portland. Will we have the battle of the OHN’s play out on stage? lol

  • tierbee

And I guess things are still hush from the Cook camp?

Heh, yes. Impenetrable wall of silence.

  • artemis

I figured the tweet I saw about a DC & Lee Tour was just a rumor, but many Lee fans also love DC. Many Lee fans(not always the same ones as love DC) love Kris. I’m sure there are some Cook fans who would have a meltdown at the idea. It’s probably not a good idea for either of them because both are aiming to grow beyond their Idol fanbases.Their music doesn’t have a lot in common. But I would be first in line to buy a ticket.
My computer doesn’t want to let me listen to the All Access OHN, but if it’s the same version AOL Radio is playing-I love it. But it doesn’t surprise me that posters who don’t like Lee’s voice don’t like it.

  • http://twitter.com/kenostroff negativo
  • Q3

Lee + Cook on tour would not be bad for Lee but would not be good for Cook. I hope not! But it could happen.

Adam is supposed to tour again next year but Lee opening for Adam would be so wrong — that it is inconceivable. Daughtry is tour but Lifehouse and Cavo are supposed to be opening for him.

That pretty much leaves Cook within the 19 artists who are supposed to be touring next year and who is pop-rock.

It could help with the speculation about when we might hear some news concerning Cookie, Kelly and Adam’s next releases.

Kelly’s album should be close to done/done now, and RCA said early 2011 — but then nothing else about the date or single that I can find. This one has me puzzled a bit.

Cook’s album — I am not even guessing what is going on any more. Someone will eventually give a date.

Adam’s new album does not have a date yet — and since he hasn’t stated recording, any date would be a soft date anyway. He is planning to start working on it when he gets back to the US in December. Target release schedule is single in Spring, new album in Summer. I an interview about a week ago, he said he did not want to work on this album while he was touring. In interviews before he went to Europe, Adam said he would be working on the album while he toured — I’m glad that he decided not to do it.

  • HotHotHot

Wow! Didn’t they listen to that before they released it? Yikes!

  • smeggingnuts

So someone posted on Atop that Amazon was sending out emails stating that they would be unable to fill any orders for Adam’s Take Two. Do to the supplyer not being able to ship them.

I hope this means that Adam/RCA/19 were able to stop the release permentally.

IKR? Getting into the Christmas spirit myself, so the past few days, I’ve been listening excessively to my two-song David Cook Christmas playlist, lol. It consists of Happy Christmas (War is Over) and HYAMLC. David really needs to do a new Xmas song so I can add to it! Maybe a new acoustic performance at some super-sekrit charity gig with a friendly local weather man willing to capture and share some video, ala the Ronald McDonald House gig? In the spirit of the holidays, please? I would actually love to hear DC do Oh Holy Night, but alas, I don’t think he will, not being very religious and all… Shame. Love that song…

In interviews before he went to Europe, Adam said he would be working on the album while he toured — I’m glad that he decided not to do it.

I am not surprised. The tour schedule was grueling enough without the pressure of a new album. I am sure there has been plenty of discussion about the album, however, regarding possible writers and producers. I imagine this has been in the works for months actually. Once Adam has time to sort out what he has learned the last year and really conceptualize what he wants to do for album 2, I think the process will go fairly quickly. It seems that Adam really thrives when there is momentum going and a little pressure but he really needs to rest a bit first.

I agree about the exposure but these Christmas songs mostly get AC airplay and I think that David doesn’t really benefit from more AC exposure. I think they should just put out a single in January — and, if the album is going to be released in May, put out a second single to support the album release. But he will get a ton of press and media when he releases his album — or even a single. He is very popular and very well known.

I got my email. :) So looks like they killed the Bastard album #2. Adam owns the publishing rights to those songs so I think that gave him leverage to stop the release. Taylor Hicks stopped a similar release back in 2006 of his pre-Idol recording because he had the publishing rights.

The only place still listing it is Best Buy and they are very slow to change that site. So I believe it is just an updating issue.

Could not happen to “better” people. :)

And does any former “American Idol” have less “shelf space” on iTunes than David Cook? WTF is up with that?

Hah, good point. He has DCTR on their and that’s it. No pre-Idol stuff at all, since they were all pulled, despite having an indie solo album and a slew of Axium albums from the past. Fans can’t spend money on David Cook music if they wanted to.

His label needs to make him release a holiday song, just to get him out there.

I may be asstalking a bit, but I think that ship sailed as soon as RCA “released” a holiday song from Lee. I’m not one of the consiracy theorists who believe every white male Idol on Sony is competing against each other regardless of musical style, BUT, I do think David’s album may have been pushed to 2011 in large part because Lee’s got pushed to November. So in that sense, RCA is showing it probably doesn’t want to release Lee and David stuff simultaneously– even if they are worlds apart musically to fans (that’s my opinion anyway).

I think her album will get decent reviews. Hopefully it will sell also.

  • heartly

It could help with the speculation about when we might hear some news concerning Cookie, Kelly and Adam’s next releases.

. In that Hollywood Reporter piece from last week, it said that Kelly, Cook and Adam would have early 2011 releases that would get on the end of Sony’s fiscal year. Then you throw in that Avril is releasing stuff right after the new year, that’s a busy RCA.

I don’t have time to dig the dates up right now but Kelly’s AIEW would be a good one to look at in regards to an after the new year release schedule. New stuff started trickling in right after the 1st with the eventual release in March.

  • Q3

I didn’t see either Bieber’s or Adam’s acoustic albums on iTunes. When will they be released so we can actually compare?

Bieber’s EP is a Walmart exclusive in the US — MP3 is on Walmart.com only in the US.

Adam’s EP will be released on 12/6/10. CD is only available on AO.com but in general digital release.

    Tinawina said:

Last time I was on DCO a couple of weeks back someone had posted a breakdown of the typical RCA album/lead single time frame and when the first press releases started to appear. If there is one thing the Cook fandom does well, its research. LOL. Anyway, I don’t remember the details at all because I am a Bad Fan who does not keep up with the Official Site like I should, but maybe someone else could post the info here?

I think you were referring to this post.

Main conclusions that I gleaned from the post:

    1. Singles are rarely announced ahead of time. If they are, median time between announcement and release (premier, online streaming, etc.) is 6 days.
    2. From single drop to album release is typically about 6 weeks.
    3. Don’t usually announce date of album drop more than 3 months ahead of time.
    4. Preorders unlikely to be announced before album date announced.

Read the last portion of the post to get possible scenarios, based on information available, for release for David Cook.

Thanks to Eilonwy at DCO for her work.

  • sma11ie

But he will get a ton of press and media when he releases his album — or even a single. He is very popular and very well known.

Those are kind words, but I’m a realistic, if somewhat over-invested fan. Those statements need about 15 qualifiers each, and may still not be that true. I tend to agree with BootStar. He may be popular on certain Idol blogs, but out there, dude is pretty invisible.

  • tinawina

wordnerdarchie, that is EXACTLY what I am talking about! Thank you! That should help with the speculation around how far in advance it would be realistic to expect something official from the RCA camp. Many thanks to you and Eilonwy.

I tend to agree with BootStar. He may be popular on certain Idol blogs, but out there, dude is pretty invisible.

ITA. I would add that he may have a certain level of popularity among HAC listeners, but even there its been a long while and we don’t know how the gap will effect it. Not to mention its a smaller market.

  • BootStar

The article was actually written by the Norwalk Reflector Staff, but I get your point that those who don’t care for Crystal will always find a nit-picky reason to smear her. ‘Tis the nature of the beast.

Who smeared her? I love Crystal. Just didn’t read anything close to a “rave” in those reviews. The Norwalk Reflector is a small hometown paper. I doubt it has much influence beyond Ohio. I do expect her to get good reviews from the larger media outlets, but what she needs more than anything is to be played on the radio if she’s going to out-sell Lee.

Adam’s EP will be released on 12/6/10. CD is only available on AO.com but in general digital release.

Oh, thanks for that. I’m hoping I like the acoustic album. Love him his voice stripped down.

So someone posted on Atop that Amazon was sending out emails stating that they would be unable to fill any orders for Adam’s Take Two. Do to the supplyer not being able to ship them.

I hope this means that Adam/RCA/19 were able to stop the release permentally.

    Q3:
So looks like they killed the Bastard album #2. Adam owns the publishing rights to those songs so I think that gave him leverage to stop the release.

If true, that’s great news for Adam. Really happy to hear it. Those bastards at Hi-Fi deserve to have the rug pulled out from under them.

No new album in over two years tends to make the fans forget about you. He needed to be more proactive in getting his music out, because though his 1st album sold pretty well it didn’t have the depth that fans and critics had hoped for. It was more formula rock stuff, not signature Cookie.

Still, even in dormancy, he remains one of the most beloved and popular Idol winners, so if his next album has the complexity, critical acclaim and power fans are hoping for he can still do very well.

  • Q3

Not being kind and I am not really a Cook fan — just looking at online searches, press references, comments by people in the media about him — he is not invisible. And when he has some new music to promote, he will get promo opportunities and TV slots. He actually built a good foundation in his post Idol year for future promotion — those relationships matter. He is not forgotten like Taylor Hicks. He just has to put out some really good music this time — he can’t rely on his Idol popularity to sell his album like he did the first time. My hope is that the time they are taking to get this album done, means that it will be really good.

I think Jordin’s low album sales in the US (even with a hit single) really demonstrates that a good album and radio airplay may not be enough — it will be need to be a really strong album. JMHO Cook is more talented and more relevant than his first album and he needs to win back some people who loved him on Idol, bought his album and did not like it.

In that Hollywood Reporter piece from last week, it said that Kelly, Cook and Adam would have early 2011 releases that would get on the end of Sony’s fiscal year. Then you throw in that Avril is releasing stuff right after the new year, that’s a busy RCA.

No chance Adam’s album will be out before Sony Fiscal Year ends on March 31. And even last July Adam said single in Spring, album Spring-Summer. So I do not think that was ever the plan.

Yet another middling review for Live it Up:

    http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2010/nov/30/teen-music-review-live-it-up/

[hope it's okay to link, MJ] Interesting that such an intelligent and interesting review is from a teenager! Other reviewers could learn from her even-handed evaluation of an artist that she actually likes -

ETA – Just out of sheer curiosity, I asked a very large group of my non-Idol peeps whose names – if not music – they recognized. The result is that they all knew who Adam Lambert is [I guess infamy equals fame in some respects], as well as Kelly and Carrie. Fantasia was known by a few, mostly for her reality show. A few had heard of Lee Dewyze [one thought Lee had come in sixth, for some reason.] NONE of them had ever heard of David Cook.

  • sr4mjc
  • Trina

I completely agree its bad how David has lost a lot of visibility, but I still stand by my prediction that given a good first single + an AI performance he could very well sell more than Lee. Not that that’s saying much but still. When you have the ability to sell 1.3 million CD’s and nearly 3 million singles its safe to say a lot of people liked him. Now its just a matter of reconnecting with those people.

  • BootStar

I was just making a general observation.

I really don’t think there’s any reason to worry about Crystal’s album getting a lot of negative press. I think she is genuinely well-regarded on most fronts. Even those who don’t care for her genre of music or personal style, for the most part, recognize her talent. I’m really hoping to love her album too.

No chance Adam’s album will be out before Sony Fiscal Year ends on March 31. And even last July Adam said single in Spring, album Spring-Summer. So I do not think that was ever the plan.

With that in mind, I’d be prepared for a late 2011/early 2012 release date. What Idol has ever had his album released as early as he expected? That may be why they’re releasing the unplugged album too, so there’s something out there for folks to buy. Why Cook’s handlers can’t do something similar is beyond me.

He needed to be more proactive in getting his music out, because though his 1st album sold pretty well it didn’t have the depth that fans and critics had hoped for. It was more formula rock stuff, not signature Cookie.

I’m not sure how much more proactive he could have been — didn’t he do like a 150 concerts to promote that album? He ended the tour to work on the new one. I can’t imagine he ever expected it would take THIS long to get the second album out. But I totally agree with your assessment of where he stands in the marketplace in general.

Those bastards at Hi-Fi deserve to have the rug pulled out from under them.

Maybe those bastards at Hi-Fi could release a bootleg version of Analog Heart? ;-)

Do people actually think Cook won’t outsell Lee. I’m not a big fan but I’m expecting at least a gold album. All Cook needs is one big hit song and he’ll get there which is very good for the music climate where in today. Cook has a lot more going for him than Lee. He’s articulate, confident, and has great stage presence.

  • cristististi

songsungblue Thanks for the review, it further solidifies what I think is wrong with so many complaints of the album. How many times will people bring up the fact that LIU sounds different than Slumberland or So I’m Told? Of course it’s different, it was pretty much just Lee and a few other guys that put them together. With LIU, Lee had an arsenal of experienced, talented people to work with (writers, producers, etc.) to achieve the sound he was going for. I don’t fault him for making the album he wanted to make. I love it, plenty of people do but you can’t please everyone.

Even if mainstream stuff isn’t your thing, he sounds amazing live. If any amount of production distracts you so much from his voice that you supposedly ‘love’, get the damn live mp3s and burn a cd yourself. It’s not that difficult.

    Okay, I think I’m done mini-ranting :D

ETA: By the way, it was actually a positive review. She praises his talent, but faults the label for limiting his creativity. So in a sense, I think of it as a positive review of Lee, a negative review of RCA. But whatever.

  • Q3

With that in mind, I’d be prepared for a late 2011/early 2012 release date. What Idol has ever had his album released as early as he expected?

RCA was the one pushing Adam to release in Spring, Adam pushed it back. Glad he did because to do that tour and record an album — would have compromised the quality of both.

I expect Adam to release his single in Spring and album in Summer, and he will get the album recorded before the Summer because he is supposed to go back on tour next Summer. Adam may be 15 minutes late for an interview because he get overbooked and I expect he will take the time needed to do a quality album — just like he held up IIHY video, the Acoustic Live! EP and the Concert DVD until it “meet his exacting standards” (copyright RCA Ed) — but he also usually meets deadlines. And they started planing this album in Spring 2010 — so some work is done.

Carrie, Clay, Jordin, Kelly and Archie all hit their scheduled dates for #2 albums (Not counting the Holiday projects which were also on schedule).

Of the major idols — I think Daughtry took the longest between his first two albums but they were still releasing singles from his first album in 2008 — less than a year without a new single. Very different situation than Cook. I believe that RCA wanted his second album out in Spring 2009, not July 2009. But who else really missed a date?

  • BootStar

It didn’t look like SuBo forgot the words. It looked like she just couldn’t go on for some reason. She kept holding her stomach. Weird. And this woman is going to star as herself in a staged autobiography? Alrighty then!

  • SpenserJ

I’d be shocked, seriously shocked if he can’t outsell Lee on #2. A WTF shocked…

Me too. I agree that Cook’s been pretty far under the radar for a while. But, he’s smart, and he’s previously brought his label success. So, I assume they have a plan to increase his visibility as his release date gets closer.

I’ll admit, I’m one of those people who liked him on the show but didn’t buy his post-AI cd. I didn’t really like any of it, and I thought it was a little beneath his talent. I’m hoping to at least like a few tracks enough to purchase them from CD #2.

It would be nice to see him have a single with a lot of radio play prior to the album drop. But, even without that, I think he’ll outsell Lee. I’ve seen all of the evidence pertaining to the laws of diminishing AI returns. I don’t really have any expectations for Cook, but if I had to guess, I’d really think he’d land somewhere in 50K range – just based on his loyal fanbase. Cook isn’t Jordin Sparks. Seems to me like a lot of people have stayed loyal to him for a pretty long time, even if only just in the Idol bubble.

I watched SuBo’s performance live, and it was very odd. I didn’t detect any hoarseness in her voice, and then she just stopped and wanted to start over. It was like she didn’t realize that the performance was live.

Apparently, SuBo arrived yesterday, immediately went to LKL, then a rehearsal for the Rockefeller event tonight (he fans are speculating that she may have taped her performance for that). For some reason, they schedule her trips so that she spends the least amount of time possible in the U.S. before jumping back on a plane to go home. No time to recover from travel. It’s odd, but I think that it’s necessary for her to function.

Cook needs to OPEN for some big rock band like Foo Fighters or Dave Mathews to broaden his own fan base.

I don’t think opening for a rock act will help Cook much unless he puts out a rock album — and I am expecting a pop-rock album because rock sales are so soft now. I also think that he would get little benefit from being an opening act now — a 30 minute opening set for a crowd that is there to see someone else would gain him nothing. Maybe it would have made sense in 2008 — rather than the college tours — but no do overs in real life.

But if he was going to open for someone, Dave Mathews and Foo Fighters don’t seem likely to me.

Anyway scratch Dave Mathews off the 2011 list. They are not touring in 2011 and they do usually have a lot of different opening acts on their tour — so an artist gets 4 or 5 shows — sometimes less.

Foo Fighters are headed out to do a world tour to support their new album and, even if they would add Cook, can’t imagine that touring Europe make sense for him. Foo Fighters also use a roster of different opening acts, sometimes an opening act for just one city. When I have seen them, I didn’t even know who was going to open before I got there. Finally, since their new album is supposed to be “heavier” and more rock oriented, can’t imagine they would have a pop-rock artist open for them.

  • SpenserJ

In my opinion I blame Lee. I never understood why Crystal got grief for standing up for herself. If the labels know they can roll all over you what you will find is them leading you by the nose. I felt the same with Kris, obviously he was not happy with the whole Pat M. mess and got burned. I remember an interview Adam gave where he said that when he was on Idol and he knew what he wanted to do regarding song choices, staging, lighting etc.. the producer where hesitate. When things worked out they pretty much gave him full control. Once he signed with RCA they already knew Adam was someone who takes charge of his own career. I also remember producer Rob Cavallo and I think Ryan Teddar both saying that they never worked with an Idol that had full control. RCA told them that Adam gets the final say. So what I believe is that the label rather have someone who actually knows exactly what they want and take charge. It makes their job a whole lot easier not to have to lead anyone around.

So in a sense, I think of it as a positive review of Lee, a negative review of RCA. But whatever.

Why is it the labels fault….Lee wrote/co-wrote the songs. Why is it that this isn’t what he wanted. This is Lee’s album, Lee’s songs. If there is any blame for a poor ablum its Lee’s. I can understand if he didn’t have writing credit but he does.

In my opinion I blame Lee.

I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say that Adam is the only Idol who has full control – seriously, there were some missteps and over-production flaws on that album, and wouldn’t he have put Fever as his first single if had real control?

Nope, because when GaGa wrote the song the pronoun he was already there. Adam said he wasn’t changing it. The song got tested to radio and although Z100 loved the song the word was radio wasn’t going to play it. At that point there is nothing Adam can do, but he refused to change any word.

I really doubt that Adam(or any other idol) has full control. If the label is truly against something- the label has the final say.

I’m going by what the producers said in interviews, and there are plenty of interviews where Adam says on camera he has total control except for single releases to radio. Maybe the label were happy with the final results. I don’t think the label can put Adam in a box. That genie left the bottle a long time ago.

I really doubt that Adam(or any other idol) has full control. If the label is truly against something- the label has the final say.

Three prominent producers — Rob Cavallo, Greg Wells and Ryan Tedder said they were told by RCA that Adam had complete creative control. Ryan Teddar said it was unprecedented for an Idol to have control and he has worked with quite a few. Adam said he had creative control. Barry Weiss CEO of RCA/Jive RG said Adam had creative control. Looks to me like Adam had creative control to record the music he wanted to record and deliver it to RCA. But even with creative control, the label has to accept the work, picks the tracks that make the album and the singles.

IMO RCA did not pick a few of the best tracks for the US CD, and didn’t even release my fav track in the US (yet!) — CLYG in only on imports. But they make deals with producers guaranteeing that a track will get on an album. But it seems like a few of Adam’s favorites did not make the cut.

  • lucy

Song selection should be primarily up to the artist not management. Lee should have known this was not a good song for him to sing. And, if someone said, you will sing, “Oh Holy Night” he should have said, “I think that _________ would be better.”

I absolutely agree that the choice should be up to the artist. But if you make an erroneous choice, I would hope your management would be smart enough to stop you! … In this case, nobody stopped him. Lee should have known it wasn’t a good song for him — but apparently he didn’t (or else he did but didn’t have the nerve to make an alternate suggestion when his managers, presumably, told him to do this one). Somebody’s got to be the sensible backstop in a situation like this, is all I’m saying!

  • Fullmoon

Thank You Q3. I saw all those interviews right here at MJs. The best Idol blog to get all the information you need. Archives are your friend. :)

  • tls62

Add Monte Pittman to the list also. He was asked in an interview how much control Adam has, and replied “total control”. I seriously doubt all of these people, including Adam, are lying.

  • Q3

I think Lee is proof that the Idols are not puppets of their label. No one at RCA would have asked Lee to sing OHN. 19M can be clueless and is a total mess right now, so who knows — they could have suggested it.

I keep hoping that Adam can get out of the 19M agreement because they are not equipped to handle international promo. And Sony is doing all the international work (even Canada) but 19M gets a cut. I sure hope 19 pays him back with an Idol showcase performance for his new album. I am a bit concerned that the Sony Idols may not get treated as well as in the past now that Universal is there. They already said that they were going to feature Universal artists as mentors.

  • cookcricket

As far as Crystal goes: I really believe Jive screwed up on Allison who, more than likely, had virtually no say in her first single(s), (although I like some of the songs on her album) and the 2nd single chosen for Kris, so for Crystal, I say, you go girl!!

It seems Archie’s fans are not completely happy with Jive either, so why should Crystal take the same ol’, same ol’ approach?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I really doubt that Adam(or any other idol) has full control. If the label is truly against something- the label has the final say.

True, although they may give more freedom/control to some artists than others. Ultimately, it’s the label that will make the final decisions.

As expected, Crystal’s album is getting rave reviews:

    http://www.norwalkreflector.com/content/crystal-bowersox-debut-album-getting-good-reviews

That’s not a review. That’s an article stating that she’s been getting good reviews. The Norwalk Reflector staff writers say, literally, not one single word about what they, themselves, think of the album. You can’t even tell whether they’ve listened to it. Pretty much all they actually write themselves is a track listing.

  • sr4mjc

Is that a pawn in the middle of the shirt? Interesting symbols in there. Wish they would have left out the crashing airplanes though.

I don’t doubt Adam had a lot of input on the album and obviously the cover art. But I’m sure the label had say in the track list and single choices. The question is, will they give him as much input on #2? I hope he gets more, the bonus tracks were the most interesting songs.

It don’t think Ms Boyle had a meltdown, it just looked like she goofed up somehow and wanted to start over (or stop all together). I don’t think she processes that you can’t do that on live TV.

  • Valentin432

BTW, this is the six year anniversary of the release of Brekaway, the second album from Kelly, the result of her “taking creative control” over her record and relieving Simon Fuller of her management.
I read the other day that the number is over 13 million albums sold over the world and who knows how many singles that are still played on US radio, one of the biggest pop albums of the past decade.

Q3, I was wondering the same thing about whether it would be as easy for Sony idols to get performing spots in the new season. But Sony is now handling the X factor winners, so maybe the Sony idols can get spots on X factor?
And about how much control Adam has, I also remember all those interviews saying he had control. However, there was a more recent interview (in Australia maybe?) in which he said control was shared 50-50 between him and the label. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what interview it was and can’t cite it!

Brooke’s start/stop was painful to watch at the time, especially cuz we had been witnessing her mental breakdown for weeks by that point, BUT, that said, she stopped the orchestra at the first line, then restarted and FINISHED the entire song. SuBo’s came off a lot clunkier, IMO. It was so strange, what she did.

Cook and Daughtry combo of David Cook Autographed Guitar & Daughtry Autographed Poster current bid is $750

Huh, why is it a combo? Oh noes, is it cuz the public can’t tell them apart? Are they the same person? J/k j/k. Wasn’t there a youtube of a concert banter where David had to explain for some reason that he wasn’t Daughtry’s twin? LOL.

I have to say, David Cook must’ve donated a dozen guitars by now. Always good Gibsons, sometimes at totally doable prices (for what they’re worth). Too bad they’re always lefty guitars, or I would totally consider getting one of these charity guitars for myself one time.

  • aa618892

I am sure Adam has full control of his image but the material is more of a collaborative effort. Adam controls what and how he wants to sing, what kind of production he wants but the label works with him on what to include on the product. I think it was a mistake not to include Voodoo, CLYG and DTRH on the US CD. Those songs are unique, two of them written by Adam and really great songs. However they did not fit the labels idea of what would suit the US audience and I think they were wrong. Especially Voodoo, that could have been a hit, IMO.

Or, maybe just those former AIers who bring in the big ratings (I have no idea who that might be – but I’m sure the producers know).

“Kara DioGuardi will release a memoir in 2011 titled A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, And American Idol…”

Heh. Putting “American Idol” in the title is a nice guarantor of sales, Kara is only interesting in that context – otherwise – I would see the remainder bin in her future; if she implicitly promises Idol scoop and doesn’t deliver, it may still be there.

If there really ‘is’ any dirt beyond self-justification, I’ll suppose Idol neglected to get a non-disclosure statement signed – or, much more realistically – anything that possibly may take a shot at Cowell suits their agenda just now – 2011 is perfect timing, KWIM? #cynicbydefault

Now I wonder, if there may be a chance that Taylor Hicks would write a similar survival manual someday. (Which would probably be more interesting) *chuckle*

So according to Adam summer of next year for album #2

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moALkapujUA

  • Kirsten

Well, you yourself have put up the interviews where it comes straight from Adam’s mouth. Is he lying? Does the label want him to put it out there for some reason?

    He was probably lying.

Anybody remember when Kat was talking about her first album. How she had them scrap her first songs because she felt they didn’t represent her? How she schooled Clive and RCA about how important to have a lead single and not to rush her album to be out before Christmas? About all that control she had?

And how after the album tanked she admitted that the label told her what to do when?

Or how about Mr. Hicks? He wasn’t going to sing anything he didn’t want to sing. He fought the good fight and wouldn’t even agree to release a single that didn’t represent him. What happened? Arista wouldn’t release any single until he agreed to the one they wanted. And he would later admit he didn’t even want to sing the song, but Clive got on the horn and when he was done “talking” to Taylor, Taylor responded “whatever you want boss”. He might as well have called his album “Uncle”.

Every year tells a familiar tale. Each year, the PR folks tell people to go out and tell everybody that they had complete control of the album. Who will buy the album if the artist says “Hey, I was a puppet, but now I don’t have to eat KD for a few months!”? Certanly won’t gain you any industry cred and your loyal “true” fans will turn up their noses at the album because they want the one that represents you (even if you have to go indie!).

It’s a will oiled lie. Like the DJs that “Love that song, but the label has asked us not to play it yet”. Or the politicians who will not raise taxes. Or the “It’s not you. It’s me.” relationship ender. It’s PR.

I don’t think anyone can declare that Adam is lying because of Taylor or Kat. That’s taking some really big liberties. I believe it has already been stated that control of his image and direction is what they are talking about.

  • sma11ie

    It’s a will oiled lie.

I agree with you. That said, I don’t know exactly what Adam’s said since I don’t follow him closely, but he could’ve said he had “full control” and meant it– just that he defines “full control” differently =P.

It’s not lying to yourself, per se, just a matter of choosing your words carefully and perhaps defining things in such a way that you can believably sell that version :).

Like with David Cook- on the one hand, he kept saying that RCA let him “make a record that’s me”, a “record that I wanted to make”. On the other hand, he also said he would worry about the songs on the record, and let the label deal with the matter of singles (likely because he had no choice on that matter).

On the one hand, he said RCA told him he could write the entire album if he wanted to. On the other hand, he explained that the only way he was able to get his cowrites on the album was by submitting something they liked (not in so many words, but he basically said he had to submit songs that they couldn’t say no to). We also know he submitted his entire unreleased solo album to RCA for consideration, at least 10 tracks of solo-written Cook songs, but that when the label told David they wanted to track A Daily AntheM, he was “surprised”, i.e. RCA called the final shots on what went on the album.

Based on all the “on the one hand/on the other hand” slightly contradictory but not really statements David made during his album promo, I was able to piece together a picture for myself, wherein David clearly worked really hard to get as much creative input as he could on his album, and RCA was relatively open to his songs, ideas, writing, but at the end of the day, they had final say on singles AND album tracks. IMO. YMMV.

  • fuzzywuzzy

and her movements are very stiff

I don’t know its hard to tell….did she actually move?

I’ve noticed that at least once during a song, sometimes a couple of times, she lifts her arms up slowly, then lowers them, but it’s very robotic, IMO. That’s usually all she does (see ~3:20 of the do-over video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCv_P8GsAic ).

I’ve read a bit occasionally on one of SuBo’s fansites and they have a very different perception of her. For example, regarding today’s incident on “The View”, they totally justified her stopping the performance, blamed it on her “grueling” schedule (handwringing) and regarded her as “gutsy” for retaping OHN. They see her as a heroic and admirable figure, not at all emotionally fragile or weak.

  • smeggingnuts

I don’t remember Adam ever saying he had full control. I remember him saying that he wasn’t puppeted around that he had alot of say on the album.

That makes sense, but ultimately, the label has control (final decision), especially over newbies.

I don’t see those things as synonymous. There is nothing to be ashamed of if you has emotional or mental impairments. These do not make you weak at all.

I don’t remember Adam ever saying he had full control. I remember him saying that he wasn’t puppeted around that he had alot of say on the album.

I don’t care if Adam has no control, partial control, full control or a remote control, things have worked out pretty good for him. As long as Adam is happy and his music is selling, I have no complaints, because he seems to have none. If he does, he’s smart enough to discuss with the parties involved and not make it public.

  • Kirsten

I don’t think anyone can declare that Adam is lying because of Taylor or Kat.

If it had just ben Taylor and Kat, I might agree. But, I’ve heard the same old song every freakin’ year. Then, we later hear the truth when the PR campaigns are over.

Is it possible that the record label handed a blank cheque to a kid who had been struggling on the fringes of the entertainment industry for 10 years? Is it possible that the record label told somebody with almost no real label experience “Here, kid, take these hundreds of thousands of our dollars and tell us when you are done. Do whatever you like. You are in full control.” Is it possible that nobody at the label felt they should earn their paycheque by contributing anything at all to the album? I guess it could happen, but I don’t think it’s terribly likely.

What is likely is that the A&R reps went out and found songs for him to record. They had a meeting with Adam and from those songs, a subset was selected. Some control, but not full control. Then, the label suggested some producers to Adam and Adam picked the producer. Maybe Adam even proposed a producer, but every label contract gives them veto power over the producer. So, again, some control, but not total control. Maybe Adam made some suggestions about how a song should be recorded, but the label and producer had ultimate control over how that ended up. Some control, not full control. There were consultations, discussions, input from a variety of parties. Sometimes a suggestion from one party or the other was accepted. But at no point, was Adam likely given total control.

It just doesn’t happen unless you are Bono or JK Rowling.

Was Adam a total puppet? I would never suggest that. SuBo is a puppet. Adam was a contributing member of the team. And there is nothing wrong with that.

No disrespect but just because Kirsten makes an appearance doesn’t make it gospel.

LOL. No disrespect, but people can agree with what I post without being unquestioning followers.

I agree, but from what I can see, her fans do not believe that she has any significant mental or emotional impairments. They have different perceptions of the incidents where SuBo has been reported to have had “meltdowns”.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

Looks to me like Adam had creative control to record the music he wanted to record and deliver it to RCA.

If we’re talking about FYE, well that’s nothing to brag about then. The album is less than cohesive and took a lot of extra promotion to get it to land somewhere between gold & platinum (which is not a bad place to be in this day and age). There are plenty of Adam fans who would like the album to have gone in one direction or another – mostly dance, mostly glam-rock, etc. Instead it’s kind of a bizarre mix of tempos, song types and production. YMMV.

I don’t buy the “complete creative control” thing. But if it’s true, and Adam had complete creative control, then perhaps RCA gave up too much. It’s not like Adam was songwriter in a band (or a couple of bands) that put out a half dozen studio albums over a 10 year period (see David Cook and Chris Daughtry). He certainly may have great “vision” for what he wants to do, but he was not some experienced recording artist. He was mostly a stage performer and singer.

Also, it would help if you could provide some links to articles, blogs and/or videos where these industry “movers & shakers” made these statements. Not only do I want to see it, I need some context.

I also don’t remember Adam ever saying he had full control over his album. He has said that he wasn’t “puppeted around” and that when selecting songs to sing, he had to have some meaningful connection to the songs or they didn’t even record them. He has always said, however, that he knew that commerciality of the project was important. He has also said that he was allowed some say in production with regard to certain sounds and effects on songs.

Adam is still singing the same tune regarding his great relationship with RCA, the songs selected and the producers on his album. Reps from RCA said that ADam came in with a list of collaborators he wanted to work with and he seemed to have gotten many of those collaborators and RCA certainly has treated him very well. RCA didn’t balk at the “he” in Fever, which certainly doomed it ever being played on the radio in this country. Barry Weiss himself said that Adam wanted to take risks and that there were many people in the creative community who submitted songs for him. I think Adam, like other idols before him, had very strong ideas of what he wanted to do, the sound he wanted, but at the end of the day, you have to be able to work with and collaborate with the people that can assist you in getting that vision into reality. Based on the praise given him in interviews with Barry Weiss, Rob Cavallo, Ryan Tedder and others he worked with, Adam did just fine in that regard.

  • car

The point was that Adam did not say he had full control yet he was called a lier. Just did not seem very fair. How many times has Adam said that the label would decide on the release of his singles? Or he hoped to have a tour. Or he hoped for some international dates. But whatever amount of control he had he seems to be happy with it, so we can all be happy for him I guess.

I think Adam can be proud of FYE. You have to remember that his album was for his fans, not for Cook fans or Daughtry fans. He did very well in this economy. Maybe Cook will sell another 280K his opening week and that will be great. But maybe not. I don’t really follow Cook but I keep hearing about his great songwriting. Has he written a hit for himself or someone else yet? I know that Daughtry has but not sure about Cook.

If we’re talking about FYE, well that’s nothing to brag about then.

I disagree, it was a good album in my opinion. It certainly was exactly what Adam said it would be, electro ,pop, rock, dance with a touch of the 70′s classic rock. It certainly was the most interesting album any Idol put out. I would have been disappointed if he came out with something that played it safe and was one song after another of meanless, boring dreck. The best part about it, was these songs were even better in concert.

  • Fullmoon

Yes YMMV, but Adam said from Day 1 what direction his album was going, so no delusional fan here. Where there fans who wanted a more rock Adam? sure, just like Cook fans want a more rock album. As for bizarre mix of tempo, it’s called eclectic. Type of production? electro dance pop. No new news there. Adam said what he wanted and he got it and his fans brought it.

What might have happened with Adam is that what he and RCA wanted, happened to be the same thing, create the male equivalent of Lady Gaga.
He has been in LA and the entertainment industry for almost ten years before going to idol, so he probably had a better understanding of how a major label contract works than any other idol.
If he went to RCA and said, I want to work with Max Martin, Dr Luke, Kara Dioguardi, Linda Perry and Tedder, then it was probably the plan all along for him. He also said he wanted to work with Lady Gaga, again I doubt that RCA would have said no to that, it was more about wheter she would agree to it or not.
Compare that to Kris who said in a interview the other day that he still had no idea about who are the good producers.

I also disagree. Since we seem to go on and on about Metacritic ratings here, I guess they disagree also. Adam’s metacritic rating was higher than both releases from the previous year of . One thing I love about Adam’s album is it is pretty much what I expected from the descriptions he gave at the end of Idol of what his album would be like with a few cool surprises.

This is also what I recall seeing & hearing from Adam, and it makes perfect sense. There’s a huge difference between not being “puppetted around” and being a full partner in the process… or even having “a lot” of creative control… than “complete creative control.” As was stated downthread, very few artists have complete creative control with a major label… maybe U2, Paul McCartney, and someone like Barbara Streisand. Not even Green Day has complete creative control.

Maybe Cook will sell another 180K his opening week and that will be great

Just to keep things accurate, “David Cook” debuted at 280k, not 180k. And I don’t expext that kind of debut for this album. Unless his lead single is killer and performs as such on both CHR & HAC.

Adam never said he had full creative control of his album — Ryan Teddar said that Adam had creative control. Adam has always talked about how he works collaboratively with his team. And having creative control does not me he gets to make the business decisions.

That is not what Adam said either before he started the album or since it was recorded. He always talked about doing a multi-genre album that included emo ballad — that would be WWFM.

And the songs that did not make the US CD are neither dance-pop or mid-tempo ballads. There is an indurstrial rock track CLYG, a neo-psychedelic track DTRH, a pop track “Master Plan”, a theatrical rock track that has not been heard but is described as have a punk edge to it “Suburban Decay”. And “Voodoo” which is a dance ballad.

The only comment that leaked out of the RCA album planning meetings (which Adam was in) was that they could not decide which songs to put on the album.

And I remember how excited he was about getting Soaked from Muse and nobody would call any of those dance-pop. He had a really nice variety which made it so much more intersting to me.

He always talked about doing a multi-genre album that included emo ballad — that would be WWFM.

WWFM is an emo ballad? Okay. I guess there’s no clear-cut definition of an emo ballad. I consider WWFM pure Top 40 CHR/HAC pop.

  • sr4mjc

I would have pegged WWFM more HAC than CHR myself.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

sr4mjc you may be right about that. It did well on CHR but even better on HAC, so PD’s seemed to think so too.

When I think of emo I think of Jimmy Eat World or maybe some 30 Seconds to Mars. I suppose WWFM is sort of emo-ish in an alternative sort of way. Not sure though. It just seems more pop to me.

  • sr4mjc

I would say HAC for Sleepwalker too. It would have needed a radio edit for US CHR release. I still think it needed one for Canada too. IIHY, FYE and Fever are the only CHR friendly tracks (besides WWFM which is more HAC). I think that’s why they are going back to the studio quickly. Or hopefully quickly.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

Music Again and Surefire Winners seem a little rock to me. What about Sleepwalker where would that fit?

I think Music Again & Surefire Winners are pop with a rock edge. Maybe leaning glam-rock or alternative. But the way the songs are produced, they’re really more pop.

Sleepwalker is pop to me. It seems like something Kelly Clarkson might sing… she kind of rocks out pop songs. This is all very subjective though. I can totally see how others might view these three songs differently. They straddle the line.

Speaking of straddling the line, I’m not a fan of that. This is my slight “issue” with Mr. Cook. Sometimes straddling the line and trying to play it safe doesn’t get you as far. CBTM is, IMO, an example of this. It did well, but I feel it was held back by not being “rock” enough for rock or “pop” enough for pop. I hope David’s next album goes more in one direction… hopefully solid rock with good commercial hooks that will do well on the radio. I do not believe rock is dead. It’s just injured LOL. But if KOL, Daughtry and Coldplay can have their singles chart on CHR, so can David.

I think an artist can successfully balance art & commerce without being all things to all people, and thus being labeled “generic.” I think DCTR did a great job in that regard, and it’s what was needed right out of the Idol gate. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have issues with songs like CBTM, or the way Lie is produced on the album (it’s soooo much better live). I have high hopes for David’s next album.

  • car

I agree, everything is subjective because CBTM is not what I would consider rock at all. And I would think that Kelly Clarkson could also sing CBTM or Home or September very well. She’s certainly talented enough to do them all justice.

  • Fullmoon

I don’t watch football but does football teams play pop. A few Football teams have been using SFW for their games. I would think SFW is alt/rock. maybe Glam Rock?

  • Fullmoon

CBTM and LO are as generic as they can come. Any pop/Rock dude can sing those songs, they are not challenging at all.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

Fullmoon, I would like to see anyone try to sing LO well. Seriously. That is one of the most vocally challenging songs to make it to radio in the last five years. I honestly think Chris Cornell might even have trouble with it (it could be why he gave it to David LOL). You need range and power (the kind David, Adam & Kelly have). I also found it to be unlike anything else on radio at that time and that’s why it made it to top 20 on CHR. As for CBTM: I agree.

Scott, the album (Adam’s) also got pretty darn good reviews (quite a bit better than Cook’s CD, and I say that as a fan)

They actually both got “mostly favorable” reviews (in the Metacritic Green Zone), but yes, you are quite right, Adam’s was reviewed better than Cook’s, and quite a bit better than Kris’.

I really like both Cook and Adam, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both of their albums. I do prefer Cook’s album, perhaps because when all is said and done I just prefer his voice, lyrics and genre, but I totally understand those who prefer Adam’s voice/album. In the end they are both great singers, IMHO.

I love it myself, but I will concede that Cook’s album has flaws (overproduced, a bit generic, too many mid-tempo songs – chronic post-idol debut complaints) but I think that the one thing that may have hurt him critically was the fact that he realeased his album at the dying-end of a long and tired pop-rock cycle on CHR. For bored and jaded critics it probably seemed a bit played out?. Adam’s album, in contrast, arrived on the cusp of a electro/dance/pure pop revival on CHR. What’s more, as a man in a female dominated genre, Adam was totally unique. It amplified the excitement. It would not be the first time that “different” was perceived as “better”, either fairly or unfairly.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ CindyM

I agree with you Scott (miracle!!) about Light On. That song takes a powerful voice, I can’t see many pop-rock guys who could sing it. David definitely had the pipes to do it justice.

I would absolutely love to hear what Adam would do with LO – but in privacy & on headsets because I can’t even imagine what would happen if certain Cook fans ever heard such a thing ;)
I’m still hoping someone breaks into the 19 vault and snags Archie’s version of TOML! Soooo curious!

    :) ;) :)

For the record I do like Cook, the album not so much but I am looking forward to his album more than I can say about any other Idols (Except Kelly)

But Adam’s biggest hit so far WWFM is neither electro/dance/or pure pop but he was still able to get a hit thank goodness. It did better on HAC but it did well on CHR also. At the end of the day until rock radio plays these guy they are all competing on CHR/HAC. Adam has said in several interviews that he will lean more rock/pop next time so it should be interesting. We can only hope that they all do well on the formats that give them airplay.

Ohhhhh, I’d love to hear Adam’s take on LO, and I’d love to hear a Cookian version of Sleepwalker.

See, I hear WWFM as pure, unadulterated Pop. Just my opinion.

I actually think Cook can do Sleepwalker justice.

It’s a HAC song that managed to get pop play.

I’m really looking forward to hearing what Cook, Kelly and Adam have planned for the new eras. Three of the best vocalists :)

    Agreed on all counts.

You and me both. I’ve often wondered why they didn’t release it.

FWIW, I actually like Lee’s version of OHN. Maybe because he’s not trying to be some great vocalist, just himself. It’s different. I like it.

  • car

I liked Lee’s version of OHN also. It was different and to me different does not always equal bad.

I was surprised to learn Gavin R is rumored to be gay

I don’t think Gavin R. is gay, but he did have gay sex before his marriage. So there is that.

Anyhew, I am looking forward to Kelly, Cookie and Adam’s next albums. I hope I personally like the music on them, because it’s first and foremost, all about me, and secondly, I hope all three are successful.

I thought for sure that t-shirt had to be a joke. It’s so creepy with the moon with the knife and the plane crash. Gotta give it credit though, it’s original.

That shirt design looks so different compared to the guitar, deer, piano, elephant designs.
Interesting, but yeah I don’t know why the plane crashing is there.

Regarding, the blind item article with the AI picture underneath, Sigh.
I’m sure the article needed some hits, that’s why they put the picture in there – they succeeded.

but yeah I don’t know why the plane crashing is there.

“…And if your plane fell out of the sky,
Who would you call with your last goodbye…”

The early shirts seemed to be mostly aimed at females. This shirt looks very much like the ones I see countless teenage boys wearing for dozens of different alternative bands. I think that is probably the target market. And, not a bad idea, if you ask me.

Yeah, I ‘m quite familiar with Kris’ songs, but somehow I don’t want to be reminded of plane crashing down.
Anyway, I have so many Kris’ shirts including the hoody sweater, that I’m not going to buy this one.

Just weighing in on “Oh Holy Noi” by Lee DeWyze. From the up-tempo, simplistic guitar strummin’ to the phrasing and vocals…..strongly disliked all of it. What were they thinking?
