I think I took "raw" as meaning more emotional. Real- not sure what that means.

For me it's not about the rules. Obviously, they will make and break them as they see fit. Just don't tell me it's about undiscovered talent (the whole premise of the show) when an Osmond makes the cut (nothing against him personally). I just saw that they're marketing it as more "raw" and "real" this year. Riiiiiight.

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the point exactly. Harvard only gives need based scholarships. He doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t NEED AI, he just wants it. So, whatever. Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see what happens, I guess.

But the way I see it, American Idol only takes people who meet certain requirements that they deem fair. Anyone "too rich" doesn't get the "financial aid." If DO meets the requirements, he deserves a shot. Excluding him based on his last name would be discrimination, wouldn't it? (He wouldn't be able to prove it because the whole AI process is arbitrary and plenty of discrimination occurs, I'm sure.) Unless they revise the rules to specifically exclude cases like his. But I guess that's what many of you here would want because you don't feel the rules as they are are fair? Personally, they seem fair to me. I don't know that DO doesn't need AI. I don't know what the definition of "needing AI" really is to be honest.

He'll be put through to the Top 24 whether he can sing well enough or not. And even if AI wanted to axe him, you can believe they'll be stongarmed into keeping him.

I just say what the heckà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ obviously anything goes. Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve had people whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve recorded cds, people who have been signed with major labels, people who have been on national talent shows, people whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve opened for major acts and people whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been back up singers for major acts so they obviously had connections too. So heyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ what the heck.

LMAO. True dat. Just the same, if Idol is "Star School" as Byrd is wont to say, this guy eats Thanksgiving diner with the professors. The principal used to change his diapers. He's the homecoming king, the valedictorian and the captain of the football team all rolled up into one. He's also the rich kid. And now he wants a full scholarship to Harvard. :laugh_tb:

I'm thinking the delinquents are gonna kick his ass.

There are a lot of assumptions being made here. We know the guy's last name is Osmond. We don't know what particular connections/opportunities he has as a result. American Idol has some rules, and if he meets the requirements, then he deserves the same shot as everyone else. I get what you're saying about not "needing" American Idol, but we don't know that he needs it any less than any other experienced contestant...or that he couldn't become a breakout star when given the opportunity. If he is the breakout star, and we pass him up in favor of non-Osmonds who aren't...what good is that?

Lu, you are right that the radio stations arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t fighting for Osmonds anymore. But that doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t take away the fact that the Osmond name can open doors that others donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get. Donny and Marie have been milking careers forever on very little talent, but they still have enough star power to pull some strings.

Well PJ, I'm very jaded now when it comes to AI. I used to think it was a talent show looking for a true undiscovered amateur to transform into a star but now I know that's a bunch of hooey. lol

Yeah, I agree. Osmond, Sinatra, Presley, Streisand, Springsteen... Those people's kids don't need or belong on Idol to my mind. Especially Osmond, because they're already performing for large groups all over the world and have theaters and resources at their command. He's probably already been on Oprah, played Carnegie Hall and done a nationally-televised Christmas special with the fam. I can't imagine any Osmond would be willing to sign 19-Alphabet's contracts, anyway.

Paris Bennet is a whole 'nother thing, mostly because her last name doesn't immediately spell superstar. If the Osmond wanted to compete as David Jones (which is actually the real name of both Davey Jones of the Monkees and David Bowie IIRC), I wouldn't be so averse.

As to already creating backlash, well, nobody can vote against him even if they want to. Those who don't like him from the get-go can only vote FOR somebody else, and their votes are likely to be split among enough other people to not really make a diff to the Osmond till the going gets tougher.

I think David O is looking for AI to do for him what it has done for so many others... give him a chance to be heard. The very reason he probably wants to be on the show is the reason so many here think he shouldn't be. I keep reading posts about Osmonds - yuck, who wants to hear an Osmond, not another Osmond... I think that's probably what's been handicapping him. I seriously doubt there are radio stations clammoring to play music of a new Osmond. And the Osmonds are not exactly a hot commodity so I'm not sure what kind of connections they have now. If he was a relative of the Jonas Bros, maybe so. This guy knows that AI will give him and audience and if he makes it far enough, it will also give him a fan base. Based on some of the other things AI has done with contestants, I have absolutely no problem with this at all. And he's cute. :)

Aren't The Osmond on shows like ET all the time? (Read complains about it, I'm not in America I have no idea who they are.) Or is David Osmond not one of the famous ones? Like Bonus Jonas? Otherwise it's like Paula on DWTS.
