CeCe Frey & Paige Thomas Open Up About Emotional ‘X Factor’ Performances – “Yes, I was pegged as the ‘mean girl’ from day one,” CeCe admitted sheepishly, when I asked if she’d been misunderstood or unfairly edited. “I think that when everybody goes into a competition like this, you’re not sure how to act. You’re not sure if people are going to be nice, if people are going to be friendly, or if everyone is going to be conniving and do whatever it takes to tear you down. So I just kind of went into it with walls up, keeping everybody at arms’ length, because I sure as hell wasn’t going to let anyone mess with me. If I made myself untouchable, it would let everybody else know, ‘Okay, at the very least, we need to stay away from this girl.’ So was that the best [way to act]? No. But I am so pleased and thankful that I got the chance now to really be myself and let America see who I really am.” – See the Videos at Yahoo.com

The Roxy Club Responds To Adam Levine’s Bizarre ‘Voice’ Rant – One of the more awkward (and amusing) moments of this Monday’s episode of “The Voice” came when Adam Levine was critiquing contestant Cassadee Pope’s performance of a Michelle Branch song, and he used most of his airtime to quite harshly critique legendary Hollywood rock club the Roxy. “We used to open for Michelle Branch,” the Maroon 5 frontman grumbled, “and I remember we opened for her at the Roxy and they didn’t even give us a dressing room. I hate the Roxy. I’ll never play there again!” Anyhoo, the folks at the Roxy could have been angry about Adam’s bold statement, but in this any-publicity-is-good-publicity age, they decided to have a little fun with the situation instead, switching up their marquee immediately after Monday’s West Coast “Voice” broadcast:

I did not watch Elliot’s season of Idol. If I had, I would have voted for him. His type of music is not at the top of the charts these days, but this guy is really good. RE: Haley, another wonderfully gifted artist that is not getting the recognition she deserves. What a tough business.

  • girlygirltoo

Sounds like Elliot isn’t getting any support from his label. That stinks. He has the most soulful voice of probably any Idol contestant ever.

Lollll at The Roxy. Love it!

Glad to see Haley’s got a nice gig in Vegas. I wouldn’t call it a residency because it’s not long enough, but it’s still cool.

    Adam’s new tat is huge

  • heartly

Kelly was interviewed this morning and was asked what’s in store for 2013 and she said that she has a “surprise” and “something cool happening” next year that she can’t talk about just yet but she’s been “waiting a decade” for it and she’s really excited about it. (at 7:58 of this video, whole thing is interesting)

The first thing that popped into my head was something on Broadway because she’s been talking about wanting to do that since the beginning.  I don’t know, last time I thought it would be this, we got Duets.  haha  This sounds bigger than that though.

Another little bit of info that slipped out was that she’d been offered the opening spot for Sunday Night Football that Faith Hill now does (Pink before her) a couple of times over the years and turned it down.

  • irockhard

David Draiman is the frontman of the metal band Disturbed, which is a one of the big modern metal bands. The other tweeter is presumably a Disturbed fan.

Anyway I posted that convo not only because it mentions James but these singing comps that we watch.

    Amen.

Elliott seems to be managing to make a living for himself and get small gigs. So I guess when it comes down to it, that’s all anybody can expect in the mass-media world we live in. I expect that Haley can become a really valued club performer with a strong, if smallish, following as years go by, if she puts her mind to doing that.

  • windmills

I was listening to that this morning and now I’m really curious!

It’s funny because Carrie’s also been talking about a special project after the 2nd leg of the 2013 tour lately and I was thinking Broadway was a possibility for her too! Maybe Kelly and Carrie can play Glinda and Elphaba in Wicked. Can you imagine? It’s almost definitely a coincidence that they’ve both been teasing something for 2013 though, unfortunately for me. Carrie needs to start following Kelly on Twitter for me to start thinking it may be something they could do together (I think that’s coming anyway because Carrie’s slowly and randomly started to add to the list of people she follows).

I’m trying to think of things out of the pop star mold that Kelly wouldn’t have been able to do before. Maybe something related to big band. Doesn’t she still talk about Stuff Like That There/big band week being her favorite week her season of AI? Maybe she’s going to play Rosemary Clooney in something. Or, maybe something to do with Ella Fitzgerald. Maybe Kelly’s going to do a special concert at Carnegie Hall or some other really amazing venue. If she does I still think it’s going to be performing something other than pop or country songs.

  • girlygirltoo

    oh, ok, thanks.

Good for Draiman admitting he started to watch Season 10 when James was on.

Revolver being in James’ court early on probably put him on the metal radar. That was a huge 1st for that show.I wonder how many other metalheads tuned in last year, if for nothing else but out of curiosity.
Most are probably too ashamed to admit it, lol.

  • heartly

I thought of Carrie’s tease too when Kelly said she had something coming up.  I agree about it being a coincidence but would be neat if it wasn’t.

I really can’t think of anything else besides Broadway that she’s openly talked about wanting to do since her career started.  Just last year she said this in a USA Today interview:

“And she has other big things planned. “I think at some point in my 30s, I don’t know if I want to do a revival show or something, like bring back Funny Girl, or start a completely-from-scratch musical.” But “that’s something I really want to do. I love Broadway.””

I think she’d have the time next year to take something like this on.  She’s said that they plan on touring some more but I’m taking the word tour in a broader sense of it being a bunch of one-off shows, especially since nothing has been hinted at about it being anything bigger.  Several of those one-offs have been announced already with the last one, so far, being in July at Wrigley with Jason.

I haven’t heard Elliott in ages.  He certainly sings beautifully.

Apparently, he doesn’t write songs, at least not good ones.  I would think that it’s nearly impossible in his position to get a good song from an outside source.  Another thing, in this era of the WGWG, it looks old-fashioned seeing a singer needing an accompanist.  That’s what I thought when I saw a clip of Haley recently.

I think Elliott, like Clay, has a great, great voice.  Unfortunately, that isn’t what’s called for in today’s pop.

That’s a good point about Kelly and one that actually points against Carrie picking up a Broadway gig next year. Both would need to devote some intensive time to prep a Broadway gig: acting classes, maybe dance classes, actual rehearsals, and all that. I wonder if Kelly would be willing to commit that much time to New York when she’s just setting up roots in Nashville since I feel like it wasn’t that long ago she did an interview where she said one of the things she’d be doing in 2013 was settling into and decorating the new home she & Brandon have bought. But, I guess Brandon could fly in and out of New York.

I’ve been checking a list of shows set to open because the new Broadway season basically starts with March previews and I feel like most new shows that are ready to go soon have their casts locked down. But, if it were a show that’s already running then there’s a bunch of possibilities including Chicago.

Hey, Evita’s going to have some cast turnover starting in January…..(I really don’t think that’s what Kelly’ll join ;)

It’s a Headline Thread, if someone you like of the over 100 alumni so far is doing something interesting and not mentioned here, surely you could mention it? IMO.

  • windmills

heartly: I think she said that she was just taking it easy during January to play house and then was going to start back up again.

Oh OK, thanks. Because I remember hearing the interview soon after Kelly’d alluded to 2013 touring and thinking that didn’t sound like it was touring touring (definitely one offs like you said). Now that you mention it I think Kelly referred to nesting as 1 of the things she’d do in 2013 which goes along with what you said about January. I probably got the wrong impression because whoever was doing the interview moved on to another question before Kelly talked about other stuff she’d be up to.

When you mentioned Funny Girl, I did a little research because I’d read about there being talk about a Funny Girl revival. Unfortunately that was scrapped last November due to investors backing out (link). Lauren Ambrose was originally cast as Fanny Brice (she beat out Lea Michele) but, maybe if they resurrect the project then they’ll redo casting. I still feel like that would be a biger time commitment and higher pressure situation than Kelly’s likely to want to take on now but, the girl always surprises.

I’m just excited that whatever it is will be outside the box that Clive built.

  • fuzzywuzzy

So great of Scotty to donate part of the proceeds of his NYC concert to this cause.

  • GinaBallerina

Uh oh.  If Kelly wants Brandon to propose to her, she shouldn’t have bought a house with him as just boyfriend/girlfriend.  That hardly ever works out.

  • usedtobelucy

” I would think that it’s nearly impossible in his position to get a good song from an outside source. ”

Actually, I think Elliott’s gotten some quite good songs (along with some not-so-good ones, of course). But you have to get good songs that fit the exact fashion of the day (or magically are the thing that will lead people to the *next* big fashion of the day, I guess), and his style, which is pretty fixed, is not that.

He was lucky that his first good song really hit it big. But his subsequent good songs didn’t, partly because they didn’t fit the exact fashion of the day and partly, I expect, because most radio doesn’t let people on indie labels rise higher than about the mid-20s, on the formats Elliott’s music suits, unless they sustain an indie career of extreme excellence for quite a long time, it seems. And, I would guess, partly because his look and persona don’t fit the fashions of the day any more than his music does.

There are plenty of people who are fine songwriters but aren’t great performers themselves (or who haven’t found a really lucrative performing niche for themselves, if they are great performers). So you can get good songs. But you have to get good songs that people will give radio play to, and he has numerous strikes against him on that score.

In rockish genres there really is a big singer-songwriter thing going on at present, but I don’t think it’s nearly that pronounced in the pop/R&B /soul worlds that Elliott inhabits, or even in the jazz world. You can still be “just” a singer there and, I would expect, will be able to be that for as long as the genres last. Neither instrumentals nor vocals mean the same in those genres as they do in rock and soft rock, seems to me.

Still, he gets gigs and (apparently) is making his mortgage payments. So you can’t really ask more than that in a world where only a handful of the talented musicians can make a living doing music and a near-vanishing portion actually make it big.

  • heartly

Wow!  I watch that every Sunday when I’m visiting my parents.  I wish Kelly had accepted the offer, that would have been fun.  Did she say why she turned it down?

She talks so fast and scattered so who knows if this is the total truth or not, but she said it was because she didn’t like the song and wanted to change it up and the NBC/NFL/whoever people weren’t really down with that.  haha

  • GinaBallerina

Oh okay, lol.  The song isn’t the greatest so I can see why she might have wanted to change it.  Thanks for responding!
