Idol Headlines for 11/26/12

Simon Cowell lashed out at a member of Depeche Mode Via Twitter – Late last night, while Simon was up making phone calls to London, he tweeted, “I read Martin gore wants to shoot me. He was is in depeche mode. Do you realise how weird and stupid that makes you. Go and watch the news. Why I am angry about weirdo gore is a ton of people have got shot this year and weirdo gore encourage this.” Gore told Music Week “I’m not advocating violence but I think somebody should shoot Simon Cowell.” Hm.

Also, Simon is asking for song suggestions for his acts, “Would love you to suggest some song ideas for emblem 3 and 5th harmony. I have to get them into the finals.”

Nicki Minaj’s ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up’: Singer Blames Walmart For Poor Album Sales – When asked in an interview with Power 105.1 if it was hard to purchase “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up,” Minaj responded, “It is hard to get the album because the stores basically said that the last few re-releases they had put out did not do well and they didn’t want to take a chance. So, Target and Walmart is not selling the album. Target is actually my biggest retailer — they’ve always been my biggest retailer. They’ve sold the most Nicki Minaj albums ever, so, thank you, Target. But I wish you could’ve sold this one.” – Read more at Huffington Post

I would laugh if none of Simon’s acts get to the finals-it’s actually a strong possibility.

  • girlygirltoo

IMO, neither Emblem3 nor Fifth Harmony are good enough to make it to the finals (of the 2 groups, Emblem3 is better). I doubt Simon really cares about the groups, either. He just wants to brag that he won.

@krisallen:disqus #Met some amazing people at Zakale today. Really cool stuff going on here and they taught me how to dance.

  • No Thanks

I dunno.  I think Emblem 3 has a real chance out in the real music market.  Of course Simon loves to win, but he loves making money a WHOLE LOT more.  1D didn’t win and they’re raking in the millions for Simon.  Do you think Simon is still upset he didn’t win that year?

Simon did win US Xfactor last year. Melanie was on his team (Girls).

I don’t see anywhere near the interest in Emblem3 that 1D had before they hit big in the US, though. 1D had a brilliant marketing plan involving YouTube and social media, and they were already this huge phenomenon before they even broke in the US. I think Simon is going to have a very hard time trying to duplicate that with another boy band.

After all, there are other boy bands out there right now, and most of them haven’t come anywhere close to the success 1D is having. The Wanted has fallen off in the US after having a big hit with their first single, and BTR seems to be much more successful as a touring group than in terms of radio play or album/singles sales (although admittedly, I haven’t bothered to look up their sales, so maybe they are doing better than I think).

I think that the market can only sustain a couple of boy bands at a time. I’m trying to remember if there was a time when there were a lot of boy bands dominating the music world at the same time, and I can’t think of any. When The Jonas Brothers were the ones the tweens swooned over, I don’t remember any other boy band being horribly successful.  When BSB and NSync were at the top of the charts, 98 Degrees was around and had a decent amount of success, but not close to the level of the other 2. Was there another super successful boy band when NKOTB was topping the charts? I don’t remember, but I don’t think so.

Emblem3 doesn’t really stick out to me as being unique enough to separate themselves (I know they don’t think of themselves as a boy band, but that’s what the tweens likely consider them). They are talented, sure, but as we know, talent alone isn’t enough to make it big in this industry.

But I’m long past from being a tween/teen, so I could be way off on this assessment :)

Yesterday Kelly was on the cover of the “Celebs on Sunday” magazine that comes with the Daily Mirror in the UK.  Nice little interview.

    – says she finally made it in the eyes of her nephew when she had “Tell Me A Lie” placed on the last One Direction album
    – in 2005 she says she almost quit several times while on tour because she wasn’t handling the fame and pressure well at all
    – quickly talks about some advice her mom gave her growing up
    – of course there’s the Brandon talk.  Says he’s “the one” but they aren’t rushing to get married. Was asked if kids were on the horizon and says that she never was one that wanted them (she’s always flip-flopped on this answer) but now she says she’d like one with him but his dad, Narvel, would kill them if it happened anytime soon.  haha
    – 10 years from now she wants to be married with a kid of her own and hopefully have a “Chapter 2” Gh but acknowledges that that’s going to take a lot of work to get that.
    – she also wants to do a song with Pink, Adele or Bruno Mars*
    – she ends it with some great advice for others that want to do this crazy job

*someone please say yes to this girl!!  Of those three listed, I think a Kelly/Bruno collab would be fantastic

Emblem 3 don’t remind me of a boyband as much as they do people like Hot Chelle Ray or Metro Station or any one of those bands made up of young guys who like to sing about being obnoxious and partying and hitting on girls. Who were the ones Kesha supposedly patterned herself after? Like that. They might do okay, they just need to find a fresh way to sell that vibe.

  • No Thanks

I wouldn’t categorize Emblem 3 as a “boy band”.  Yeah, they’ve had to turn into a vocal group in order to compete on X-Factor, but they were essentially a real band before X-Factor.  They all play instruments.

And I find it funny that people are retro actively saying they could see 1D success coming back when they first started out.  I distinctly remember almost EVERYONE here saying the boys had no shot in hell of making it here or anywhere.  And ruthlessly mocked anyone who though they could.

Well, I was there in the early days, and Emblem 3 were about at the same place 1D was when they were on the show.  Popular with the little girlies but in the public vote never higher than 3rd.

And that social media buzz happened ORGANICALLY at first.  All the little girls on tumblr, twitter, youtube, Facebook, etc… kept talking about these super cute boys with British accents.  It also helped that the boys were naturally active on social media with very little prompting from their handlers.

It wasn’t until about 6 months after the show ended that any formal social media strategy was applied to them by marketing executives.

Now I’m not saying that Emblem 3 is going to become a world wide phenomenon like 1D have.  But they’ve got a pretty good shot at making it in the US.

ETA: And L.A. Reid has already said he wants to get his hands on them. I think he’s very interested in signing them.

  • girlygirltoo

I know they were already a band before going on XF, but I will bet you that they will be marketed as a boy group to try and appeal to the tweens/teen demographic.

I really don’t think they are all that. They aren’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, but there’s nothing different about them that I can see. They also come off as too cocky to be likable. And what is up with the back stories trying to make them appear as if they came from the ‘hood? They grew up in Huntington Beach, which is a middle class beach community here in SoCal. Several of their relatives work in Hollywood. There is nothing ‘hood about them.

But like I say, I’m in the wrong demographic for all of this. I don’t understand why 1D is so massively popular, either. They don’t dance, only 2 of them can sing and none of them are all that cute. The songs are catchy, sure, but no more so than lots of other songs out there. BSB and NSync run circles around them in terms of actual talent. So, yeah, IDGI. But, whatever…

Luckily, I’m not the person any of these groups are trying to appeal to, so they can do just fine without my few measly dollars :)

Phillip’s “Home” is now #1 on iTunes. I think by now it must’ve beaten Daughtry’s own “Home” sales spot by a few tens of thousands. ;) Won’t be surprised if it enters the Top 5 best-selling Idol singles of all time here shortly.

I see Xtina is courting Bieber fans on twitter, hoping they’ll tune in and vote for Dez (who I guess is singing a Biebs tune)

Interesting Grammy nominations/winners predictions by Paul Grein from HDD:

Our Resident Grammy Expert Takes a Look Inside the Crystal Ball

    November 23, 2012

    by Paul Grein
    Record of the Year

For the second year in a row, the year’s best-selling song is likely to walk off with Record of the Year. “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra is favored to take the prize, which was won last year by Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
The year’s second best-selling song, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” is also likely to be nominated. The bubbly song is rather teen-oriented for the panel, but it was the year’s most ubiquitous hit.
“Take Care” by Drake featuring Rihanna is one of the best records either artist has released. Two previous Rihanna collabos have been nominated for Record of the Year.
Other records with a good chance at a nomination include Frank Ocean’s “Thinking Bout You,” Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” Bruce Springsteen’s “We Take Care of Our Own,” Mumford & Sons’ “I Will Wait,” Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself),” “Payphone” by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa, Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake.”
Phillip Phillips’ “Home” and “We Are Young” by .fun. featuring Janelle Monae are also strong contenders, though some panelists may dock them for
sounding a bit too much like Mumford & Sons and Queen, respectively.
    Best New ArtistFrank Ocean
and Gotye are certain to be nominated. One Direction and .fun. are also
likely to make the cut. After that, expect a brawl for the fifth slot.
Carly Rae Jepsen is this year’s big question mark. “Call Me Maybe” proves that the 26-year old Canadian can make a classic teen pop record, but the panel may not be convinced that she has what it takes to go the
Other contenders include The Lumineers, Miguel, Tyga, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Christina Perri, Brantley Gilbert, Ed Sheeran, The Wanted, Alex Clare, Alabama Shakes, Of Monsters and Men, Hunter Hayes and Scotty McCreery.

I agree about Emblem 3. When 1D was on Xfactor , people here were saying Simon was an idiot for thinking they’d do well here in the US because boy bands were out.

As far as Emblem 3 not being different, what’s wrong with that? P2 is gonna sell great this week and he’s referred to as Dave Matthews Lite and Mumford & Sons other brother. Different is overrated.

Some day in the future, we will fondly look back on what appears to be the “Curse of Two and a Half Men”.

First Charlie Sheen, now Angus T Young (Jake)

Another Titular actor in the show is in ‘rant’ mode and has been converted, it appears to something called the  “ForerunnerChronicles”.
Not knocking anyone’s religion, but the kid appears to have been a victim of cult conversion.

Somebody should keep an eye on John Cryer :P

Great to see David A.’s video of Everybody Hurts #3 on Musiqtone behind 2 of Taylor’s videos and ahead of Beiber.  His fans are doing a great job of keeping his name out there.  One talented guy.  I just received his new video of the Rainbow Remix and I really like it.  He looks his age and is so happy in it.  He has some great moves, too.
