American Idol’ goes for diversity, divas – LOS ANGELES • “American Idol” opens its 12th season on Wednesday, still a ratings powerhouse, but a shadow of what it used to be. The Season 11 finale last May was the top-rated show of the week, with more than 21 million viewers, but down almost a third from the previous low for a finale. In its best year, 2003, the “Idol” finale topped 38 million. Do that math and, if you’re Fox, you’re worried. – Read more at St Louis Today

‘American Idol’ hangs on despite critics, challenges – “There’s no question that ‘American Idol’ is no longer the cultural force it once was,” said Jon Burlingame, a TV historian who teaches at the University of Southern California. “It has been on the downhill slide for the last two or three years, and that will continue. The demographic that consumes music has given up on it.” The numbers show how far “American Idol” has fallen. During its peak fifth season, the Fox reality show was averaging 30 million viewers. Last season, it was averaging 19 million viewers. – Read more at Cleveland.com

The one song off of MOABD James NEVER performed live during his whole tour was “Everything Burns”. He did perform it one time only during his recent Stageit show. He said at the time it would be the first AND last time he ever sang it.
    In case anyone missed it…

I think he became allergic to that song ever since he found out it was a cover, LOL. It’s not one of my faves but he sounds great as always.

Exactly. I’m surprised he played it all.
That recent show left me really impressed with how well he’s been playing guitar. I bet he plays rhythm on his next tour and Blake plays lead.

I may be off base here, just a hunch, but Cass Dillon may still be playing bass, especially since he’s in a band now “The Dirty Apostles” with Jeff. Hmmm…..

I don’t watch Glee(Hi Axxxel) but the picture Ryan Murphy has tweeted must be an upcoming episode that they called ”Diva”.

If you noticed Darren on the picture he wore a similar jacket to Adam’s Dragon’s Attack Jacket that he wore on his tour with Queen and on VH1 Diva. Would Darren sing a Queen song then?

While “The Voice” continues to feel fresh and engaging, “Idol” struggles to get beyond the talent-show cliches it created. The new season features the familiar tear-jerking stories, the mock suspense and the comic interludes as untalented contestants perform and are mocked.

I see tear jerking stories on the Voice too, and untalented contestants. The only difference is the coaches try to pretend that they are all “great singers” and “special people.”

The author seems to be a Voice lover/idol hater.

I also find it hilarious that the other article is pretending the X Factor has stolen idols edge like it’s more popular.

Billboard has posted an article, where they write about folk rock acts (Phillip is mentioned alongside Lumineers, Ed Sheeran and Mumford & Sons) hitting big on pop radio, and ask program directors to weight in on the trend.
Long story short, the response was pop is supposed to play what is popular, if you space your playlist correctly the variety is good.
    Read the whole article below:

Darren is singing a Queen song in that episode. “Don’t Stop Me Now.” But that particular still is from the opening number “Diva” by Beyonce, I believe.

The Episode is called “Diva” and is a tribute to musical Divas like Tina Turner, Beyonce, Madonna. There’s a Robyn song and more.

Well, you see that’s the trend in the press about Idol these days. When Showbiz Tonight were talking about the Nicki/Mariah feud the other night, the panelist on board agreed we were all “duped” (whatever), because Idol is not all worth the buzz these days, so they have to do something to get attention (right because other reality shows are so different *rolleyes*). I mean, I don’t agree with them on that, but it goes to show more than ever, despite still being a top 3-5 rated show, Idol is just looked at as a has-been program by pop culture enthusiasts. The entertainment press just loves to paint the show as “not cool and unhip” and out of date. I don’t see eye to eye on the press about that, but then again they raise some of the same criticisms I had for the show when I wasn’t watching the first 7 seasons, so what do I know? *shrugs*

“It has been on the downhill slide for the last two or three years, and that will continue. The demographic that consumes music has given up on it.”The problem with the music business (and AI) as I see it, there’s no MAJOR BIG STAR–someone like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, someone who creates EXCITEMENT….not just BUZZ….but EXCITEMENT.  The Artists/singers today are more interested in getting an endorsement deal than in actually making music.  They tour today because they have to….it’s the only way they can pay back that 360 deal they made with the record company.
I was watching the Kennedy Honors with the Led Zep tribute, what a GREAT rock Band.  I was watching the Stones at the Sandy concert, what a GREAT Band.  It’s too bad this is 2012 and not 1992, when they were younger.  I truly believe that the young demographic is dying for a BIG STAR who creates excitement and who is also a MUSICAL genius and great performer.  They just don’t make them anymore.

But part of that is just the age of the show.  The show is more than a decade old and most shows aren’t going to retain their “hip” and pop culture status that long.  Heck, most shows aren’t even on the air that long period.  I mean, I get their points in all these articles, but I also have to laugh when I see these articles lamenting Idol losing a portion of its audience and not drawing more than 30 million viewers regularly anymore as some huge dismal failure.  They never seem to touch on the bigger picture that next to nothing scores those kind of ratings these days.  Reality or scripted.  Maybe a one-off special or some sort of special event, but that’s about it.   It’s not like Idol is suddenly sagging while all these other shows are surging and filling its void.   Besides, I’m not remotely a P2 fan, but last I checked despite the sagging ratings P2 is still going to score a platinum album and has a what, 3x platinum winners single?  Until a winner of another US reality talent contest can show they can do that, IMO Idol still has some pop culture relevance.

The problem with the music business (and AI) as I see it, there’s no MAJOR BIG STAR–someone like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, someone who creates EXCITEMENT….not just BUZZ….but EXCITEMENT.

I think the reason that there isn’t as much of a buzz around pop stars is because there is no central medium to introduce artists. In the 80s and 90s, MTV was this medium, before that, shows like the Ed Sullivan show.  And radio was much more open to new acts than they are now.  I believe as it is now the only prime time shows that feature music are shows like AI.  MTV and VH1 rarely have music programming and I think this is a major way that new stars were built.  I did read an article once that said the internet is that medium now but it still isn’t as central as MTV was.

I truly believe that the young demographic is dying for a BIG STAR who creates excitement and who is also a MUSICAL genius and great performer. They just don’t make them anymore

I think they are out there, but the major labels aren’t taking a chance on many of them.  Even if they do, the record companies are reluctant to try something different, and most have the same group of songwriters, so it is more of the same, instead of something really different.

I think this has really affected rock, the labels seem to be the most reluctant to sign new rock artists and let them do their own music, though this is beginning to change with the increase in singer songwriters. I think the next big rock band is out there, with the next new sound in rock, but the major labels will not take the chance and sign them.

  • girlygirltoo

I wonder what they were filming Kris’ set for? It was a Fleming Artists showcase, so maybe something for that agency? Although I’d think they would have filmed  at least some of the other acts performing if it was for that (maybe they were filming the others but no one tweeted about that?)

His show in Philly on Friday was so much fun. Loved it :)

  • girlygirltoo

I wonder if it would help if MTV got rid of all the stupid reality shows they run and just return to the all-music format it had in its heyday. It wouldn’t even have to be just music videos. Throw in some of those unplugged concerts (I loved those), some behind the scenes shows, some music news programs, etc.

Because of YT and all the various other online ways to get new music these days, MTV probably wouldn’t be this huge force even if it did return to its original format, but it would still be nice to see — and might provide the industry with some kind of boost.

  • girlygirltoo

I was watching that Duke-NC State game. Glad to hear Scotty’s enjoying being a regular college kid…and didn’t get hurt as he rushed the court :)

All Idol needs is that magic contestant that takes us on a mystic ride like Adam Lambert did.  It can regain the status it once had.  I have always been against a contestant having too much professional expereince, but am more accepting these days.  I want to be entertained!

  • Liteasy

Adam didn’t give Idol a boost – it was on a downward trend after season 5 and has never regained that position.

  • GTFOBigGovt

He gave them the only boost they could have had and they squandered it. NO IDOL since whenever had the RS cover craziness and media frenzy he had immediately after the season and beyond.

  • justmefornow

Not a fan, but here’s one off to a good start…..

  • http://twitter.com/TarheelShari Sharon S.

Adam Lambert’s presence did not raise the ratings of Season 8 above those of Season 7, but it’s possible ratings might have decreased even more without him.  There’s no way to know what would have happened in an Adam-less Season 8, but having a contestant getting the kind of media attention he did couldn’t have hurt.

  • GTFOBigGovt

He better hope that good start holds firm with his sophomore release. Is there another Olympics around then?  :)

I wonder if it would help if MTV got rid of all the stupid reality shows they run and just return to the all-music format it had in its heyday.

There’s a music channel that just went off the air, and it was probably due to lack of viewers.  MTV couldn’t survive today, if they just aired music videos.  People have youtube, Vevo, and other sources, where they can watch the videos that they like, when they want to see them.  That video channel was interesting for a minute, bu it wasn’t the novelty that MTV was when it started, so nobody is going to sit through countless videos for songs that they don’t know.

  • elliegrll

I’m assuming you aren’t talking about a ratings boost, because season 8′s ratings were not as high as season 7′s.  It’s also hard to give Adam any credit in comparison to previous idol alums when you compare his album sales to someone like Clay, Carrie, Fantasia, even Cook’s.   There were other seasons that received more media attention than season 8 did, and where that attention could be seen in both the ratings, and the amount of music that the alums sold.

Who covered it first?  I love “Everything Burns.”  I admit that the song sounded vaguely familiar to me, but then a lot of songs do.  James shouldn’t shy away from it in concert just because it’s a cover.  He does a great job with it.  And if he didn’t know it was a cover, then he’s not mimicking the original, right?  It’s all good!  :-D
