Scotty McCreery to stage Hurricane Sandy relief concert in NYC – Several of our recent posts this Thanksgiving week have been about artists’ good works on behalf of charities, and this one is no exception. Scotty McCreery has announced plans to turn his regularly scheduled Nov. 23 concert at New York’s Beacon Theater into a benefit show for victims of Hurricane Sandy. The show, originally billed as “Christmas with Scotty McCreery” (in support of his newly-released holiday album of the same name) is now being tagged as the “Beacon Theater Benefit for Hurricane Sandy Relief.” McCreery will donate a portion of the ticket sales to the charity World Vision’s Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. McCreery has invited his friend and fellow “American Idol” fan favorite Pia Toscano—a native New Yorker—to join him onstage at the Beacon. – Read more at

David Cook – An idol comes home – Blue Springs, MO — When David Cook was growing up, he wanted to play the drums. However, his mother told him no, forcing him to turn his attention to the guitar. “I don’t think it turned out too bad,” said the 2008 “American Idol” winner of the decision. “But this is not the kind of stuff you think about when you start playing the guitar.” Cook, a 2001 graduate of Blue Springs South High School, was honored Tuesday at another one of his former schools – Thomas Ultican Elementary. The driveway leading into the school from Vesper Street was renamed David Cook Alumni Way, in honor of one of Blue Springs’ most famous residents. “This is an incredible honor,” he said of the recognition. “Words escape me. It is not something I had in my head growing up, so it is such a huge honor to have this happen.” – Read more at

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher Jet Out of Los Angeles – Heading back to their hometown, Carrie Underwood and her hubby, Mike Fisher, caught a departing flight from LAX airport in Los Angeles on Monday (November 19). The country cutie opted for a dressed-down approach, as she hit the terminal in sweats, following close behind her hockey-playing beau. – See the Photo at Celebrity-Gossip

Carrie Underwood, ‘Two Black Cadillacs’ – Lyrics Uncovered – Some of her biggest hits to date include her windy chart-topper ‘Blown Away,’ as well as the revenge-filled hit ‘Before He Cheats.’ So when it came time to write the next big hit in ‘Two Black Cadillacs,’ Underwood already knew the general direction she wished to take the tune, which she knocked out with Josh Kear and Hillary Lindsey. “It was the first time that the three of us had written a song together,” Kear tells Taste of Country. “I had written with both Carrie and Hillary separately, but never in this particular combination. You assume that it’s going to work, but you never truly know.” “Carrie had told me in an earlier writing appointment that she was expecting this album to have darker tones than any of her earlier records,” Kear continues. “So I remember sitting at the piano while writing the song thinking that if Carrie really wanted something dark, this was what she was after.” – Read more at Taste of Country

Clay Aiken on His Joyful Noise Tour: “I Have a Thing for Christmas” – New Times: Were you ever in any Christmas pageants growing up? Clay Aiken: A show or two in high school. Strangely enough the Christmas show that they do at the community theater in Raleigh is Cinderella. It’s not really a different story, but it’s part of the Christmas tradition. I don’t understand it, but I was in it. What did you play in the Christmas version of Cinderella? I was just a townsfolk. I never got any good parts. – Read more at Broward Palm Beach

X Factor’s Lyric Da Queen on Eye Patches, Mary Poppins and Miley. Plus: Bonus Freestyle Rap! – TVLINE | Before this interview, I did a YouTube search on you and found an audition you did for a BET Awards show where your flow was insanely fast but completely understandable. It was really amazing. Are you frustrated to be voted off The X Factor without having showcased your skills as a lyricist? Yeah, it’s crazy. Top 12 week was supposed to be the week that me and the boys [Jewlz and Melee] showcased what we could really do. On the show, you saw our theatrical side, our fun side, the ’90s side, but you still had not seen Lyric145 as hip-hop artists. We had this crazy concept with original lyrics. It was definitely going to be our best performance, and lo and behold, the night before, we got a call saying that we couldn’t do the song. And I swear, I fought really hard for it, because all the problems [that sidelined the performance] ended up getting fixed at the very last minute. Simon really, really liked the mash-up with Katy Perry and Queen, and we totally didn’t. I was going all the way off up until the time I got on stage, but it got out of our hands. It was a case of either keep fighting, get on stage and not know the words, or go ahead and use that hour or two to learn the words to the new song. – Read more at TV Line

Dancing With the Stars Backstage Scoop: Karina Will Miss Apolo More Than the Mirror Ball Trophy – “It was an amazing experience,” Apolo said with partner Karina Smirnoff by his side. “Obviously I’m a competitor, she’s a competitor, we’ve both been champions many times over and we always want to win, but at the end of the day we could only control how much we would give every single week and we gave our all. I can honestly say we gave our all.” Karina agreed, adding, “I think this season has probably been one of the most emotional seasons I’ve had on the show. From week one we had moments when we fought a little bit and it was difficult to break through that particular wall, but once we did we have grown so much closer together. I’m going to miss those moments more than the mirror ball trophy for sure!” – Read more at EOnline

‘Dancing With the Stars’ Apolo Ohno talks elimination: ‘It’s sad because we tried so hard’ – “It’s sad, because I think we tried so hard,” Apolo told us backstage, his arm around partner Karina Smirnoff. “But at the same time, I’m proud of how far we’ve come. ” “It’s been a long incredible, challenging and very fulfilling season. Every single week, we gave 100 percent, and it’s tough. As a competitor, you want to go to the final. You want the opportunity to fight for mirror-ball trophy. “But at the same time I’m proud. I was happy no matter what the result was gonna be. And I’m proud of [Karina] for being able to push me to give so much emotionally to each dance and grow as a person. – Read more at

That’s my first time hearing Gone Gone Gone in its entirety.  I can see why everyone is so high on that song.  I’m not even a fan and I like it a lot. Of course it’ll be hard to top Home but I hope that the success of that song will have PDs more willing to give Gone Gone Gone a chance.  If it gets some decent exposure I think it could do very well saleswise.

Not a bad gig, getting paid to sing three songs and take pictures in a showcase Mercedes-Benz. He’s really roughing it on this non-tour he’s on.

“even that”????  Kansas City Here I Come is a fantastic song

  • Incipit

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, wordnerdarchie. Heh. But we know there’s video, and eventually we’ll get to see/hear it, and compare it to the final version to see how David changes it.  At least it’s not in a film vault somewhere like the rest of “I’ll Be”.

The audience last night really liked “Light On” – especially when David hit and held that sustained G#4 in the bridge from 3:16 to 3:20. Spontaneous applause was cool.

  • yksask

I love Christmas and Clay sings the music like no one else in my world. Can not wait for the show.

Kansas City Here I Come is a fantastic song

I agree with that, girlygirltoo – so does the Grammy Hall of Fame…although I expect there are folks for whom it is unfamiliar. Just not in Kansas City. *wink*

I don’t play any instruments, but what also struck me about DC’s version was the very nice acoustic guitar work – that was classic Rock and Roll, not just Rock, and not something I had ever heard him do before. David has frequently been known to minimize his guitar skills, but I thought that was pretty sweet. IMO.

I got an explanation from someone who plays guitar- “Nice even groove, nice bass walks, and got some nice slide-y licks in during the break. That is not his regular style, took him out of his comfort zone maybe a little bit. Good for him. He’s a lot better guitar player than he ever gives himself credit for.”

“That is the “shuffle,” that pattern, with the bass rocking up and down like that between the root note of the chord and the fifth, or the root and the sixth. Classic rhythmic permutation built on the blues, and not something dude usually does.

One person w/acoustic guitar and voice, it really doesn’t get much more naked than that, musically (other than solo a capella); there’s no place to hide if your skills are weak, no second guitar player blending things out for you, or percussion keeping your rhythm solid…He has very good skills, actually.”

I recall when David was working with James Durbin on that track for his album, Durbin commented on being surprised to realize how good David was on the guitar. But he never cops to being a good player – Some perspective here, David. Heh. – maybe he’s comparing himself to some of the guitar virtuosos, but it’s obvious he’s far from “mediocre”.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • clayitagain

Looking forward to seeing Clay Aiken’s Joyful Noise 2012 Christmas concerts.  Thanks for the info.  I’m travelling to 2 concerts and can’t wait for them.  No one sings Christmas songs any better.

  • lovetheusa1776

Fine performance – David looked very handsome.  And like the way he’s dressed here – nicely put together.

  • starfishy2000

I am looking forward to seeing Clay in Detroit. His Christmas shows are something else. No one does it like him!

“No one sings Christmas songs any better”

Of course, that’s a matter of opinion, not a fact. Clay does alright on certain Xmas songs, but in general, I like Josh Groban and Michael Buble’s Xmas songs a lot more.

  • DCAIfanHelsinki

Incipit, Thank You! The sound is good and clear, the beauty of his voice and his guitar skills are showcased! The others suffer a little of disturbing sounds, although they are pretty good, too. So great there are videos and audios from there!
It seems to me that his voice just gets better and better all the time, although I never thought that could be possible. I am looking forward to his new music, and so much hope that a good label would sign him. I hope to get cd’s also in the future, I want to read the liner notes and see who play on the tracks, etc. Oh, and am I looking forward to finally getting to hear him live…

Blue Springs really loves David: The Mural, the signs on the highway and now this street bearing his name!

  • clayitagain

Obviously your opinion and my opinion don’t match.  And that’s ok.  I’ll take Clay’s versions of Christmas music over them all.  Doesn’t make it right or wrong.  Diversity, and aren’t we lucky we have a choice?

  • durbesque

I’d love to hear his new version of ‘Home’ complete.  It could be a brand new hit.

What is he thinking singing “Hold On’ in F (the album key)?  It’s painfully high…D would be comfortable and enjoyable, and it wouldn’t go too low at all.

  • girlygirltoo

CBS just used “Home” over the end credits of the Lions-Texans game as they flashed photos of the various CBS Sports crew people’s families.

The Voice of Germany did it again, this time they used David’s adaption of Chris Cornell’s arrangement  of “Billie Jean” for a contestant – In the beginning of November, they used “We Believe” and “Paper Heart” from TLM in two of the audition segments. Someone there likes David Cook, I think. Heh.
