Kris Allen on ‘Kris Allen’

But in reality, Allen’s no less passionate about music (and he did win), so we chatted up the soft rock singer/songwriter at Us Weekly’s Hot in Hollywood Party in Los Angeles, the same bash where we talked pop with Adam Lambert. Check out what Kris has to say about his debut album, and what he thinks might be wrong with it:

Adam Lambert talks ‘For Your Entertainment’ at AMA rehearsals: More from our exclusive EW.com Q&A!

Rehearsals for this weekend’s American Music Awards are underway in Los Angeles, and the Music Mix is on the scene to bring you as much of the action as we’re allowed to see. Sadly, so far, that hasn’t been much, as yesterday’s rehearsals ‘” Adam Lambert and Jennifer Lopez, who coincidentally leaked a song called ‘Louboutins’ today ‘” were closed to media.

Kris Allen, Adam Lambert total poseurs on debuts

‘ ¢ Kris Allen (Jive) and Adam Lambert, For Your Entertainment (RCA) ‘“- The good news (for American Idol benefactor 19 Entertainment, anyway) is that these debuts from Season 8′s nice-guy champ and flamboyant, shoulda-won runner-up are super-sleek hit machines just waiting to be revved into high gear. There are so many potential singles on each disc, it must’ve been nearly impossible for the teams behind these nascent pop stars to determine which tune to plug first.

Understanding the appeal of ‘American Idol’ Adam Lambert

To state the obvious, Adam Lambert is outrageously out there, and therein lies his appeal (or lack of appeal, whichever way you happen to look at him).

The dude dares you to look away, even if you think he looks a tad freaky.

He was so tarted up on the cover of his new album, the provocatively titled “For Your Entertainment,” that my kids thought he was a woman.

Apparently, for Sunday’s “American Music Awards,” Glambert will be wearing nipple tassles (I can just hear the questions from the kids now).

Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert: Battle of reality TV stars

SUSAN BOYLE vs. Adam Lambert in a steel-cage match? Well, not quite, but the year’s two biggest reality TV superstars both drop hotly anticipated debut albums Monday, setting up an epic battle for sales supremacy and a stark contrast in musical style and personality.

In one corner, we’ve got Boyle, the shy Scottish homebody whose soul-stirring ballads made her a global sensation on “Britain’s Got Talent.” In the other, there’s Lambert, the brash, openly gay glam rocker who sent “American Idol” fans into mass hysteria.

Daughtry: Live last night

Chris Daughtry tries to play rough. At the Patriot Center on Thursday, the former American Idol contender led a band that bears his surname through a set of hard pop that mostly fell somewhere between Nirvana and Bread. Like Vancouver-based Nickelback, Daughtry takes a lot of tough guy poses, but is too sweet to pull off that shtick.

It’s sort of a reverse Lipstick on a Pig syndrome: No matter how much leather, chains, flashpots or heavy metal accoutrements a nice boy throws into his show, he’s still a nice boy.

A Survivor of ‘Idol’ With Heart

The former ‘American Idol’ contestant Melinda Doolittle, who finished third on Season 6, knows who she is and what she wants. ‘In my heart of hearts, I want to be Clair Huxtable’ (on ‘The Cosby Show’ ) she declared on Thursday evening at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency, where she is appearing through Saturday. Happy feat in strappy heels

A few months ago, an ABC network executive told me about a team-building exercise he’d gone through: a crash course in ballroom dancing similar to what the celebrity contestants on “Dancing With the Stars” endure. He challenged me to take the same test of stamina and nerves, and I quickly accepted. Having never watched the network’s top-rated show, I had no idea what I was in for.

“Dancing With the Stars,” whose ninth season concludes Tuesday, chronicles a 10-week competition between dance pairs, each consisting of a professional dancer and a celebrity. Every week, the pros teach their partners a waltz, fox trot, cha-cha or other dance routine, which they perform live on Monday nights before the judges. The couples are scored on technique, footwork, posture and overall theatricality. Then viewers vote by phone or online. The results are revealed live on Tuesday nights, when contestants with the lowest scores are eliminated.

Simon Cowell. On a bum. Hot.

There are some bad jokes about “bum notes” and “X marks the spot” to be made here but we’re too good for that. Ish. So instead we’ll just tell you that some bloke in Wales called Blane Dickinson has had Simon Cowell tattooed on his bum. His pink, pimply bum.

Blane got his I Heart Jedward tattoos (we’re assuming John is on the other cheek, but we’re quite happy not to see evidence of this) when Lucie Jones got voted off. And when the twins stayed in for another week, he got Simon. This doesn’t make much sense to us either, so we’ll let Blane himself explain:

“It’s a tongue in cheek protest,” he says, possibly not realising the inappropriateness of this expression in a story about bums. “If they end up winning the competition I may just get all four judges tattooed on my behind as an act of protest. I can’t believe they are still in a talent competition.”

Nipple tassles on your “roll-out” debut to the American public Adam? I am taking a hopeful dose of grains of salt with that one. Where are the moderators from the Zodiac club when you need them?

  • HermeticallySealed

I sincerely doubt he is wearing tassels. I think someone’s info wires got crossed.

  • SpenserJ

I think that writer got his rumors mixed up. I don’t think Adam’s the one sporting the nipple tassles LOL. (And for the love of all that is holy, please don’t let it be cutie pie Courtney Galliano who’s sporting them either!).

Why must the Idols all put out Christmas music when my resistance to Christmas songs is futile. Seriously, I’ll buy almost any piece of crap Christmas cd in Target while I’m doing my shopping. I can’t help myself. Ruben – I am angry at you – but odds are I’ll download your single :)

I have no doubt that Susan Boyle will kick Adam’s ass next week, yet I’m still waiting to meet a human being who will admit to buying her cd.

I’ve already stopped going to Meijers for grocery’s this year because they have 24×7 Christmas tunes playing. Soon, I’ll be abandoning radio completely until the holidays are over.

I’m not saying it’s true, just clarifying where the source of the claim is coming from.

Yeah – when they scanned the costumes – I definitely saw the nipple tassels. I just don’t think Adam’s the one wearing them. And – they didn’t look like they had tassels actually – they just looked like little round pasties. I suspect for one of the male dancers maybe. Certainly not on a woman on ABC. (Although, they are the network that used to frequently show Sipowicz walking into a strip club on NYPD Blue, so who knows at this point!).

I’m just fairly certain that Adam is far too insecure about his looks to be going shirtless on national tv. I expect the typical Adam costume – fully clothed with outrageous boots and an OTT jacket.

  • saga

I didn’t get up early enough to catch Kris on VH1 Top 20 Countdown, but they just played the LLWD video on their regular programming!

Kris is now #20 on the published HAC chart, still with a lot of momentum in that format. Also picking up steam again on Top 40 (up over 100 spincrease after being down in single digits with his spincrease a few days ago).

ETA: VH1 is playing a nice 1-2 minute promo for Kris/LLWD/KA promoting the album and single, and showing a brief interview with him as part of their “News” segment.

Well – I should clarify that I love Christmas music while I’m wrapping my multitude of gifts. Not so much in the stores. And, the Little Drummer Boy is a hediously bad song. I also hate any signs of Christmas before Thanksgiving. Yesterday, I got physically angry that there was a Salvation Army kettle guy ringing outside my grocery store already.

Is it December yet? I have been really looking forward to the upcoming week but I am beginning to wish it was all done and behind me. Performance order, costumes, seating arrangements, program running long, will anyone show up for the GMA concert, will Adam’s album sell, will he beat SuBo or Rhianna or Shakira (who has gotten very good reviews), will he get to say more than 5 words at Letterman, who is he having Thanksgiving with, will his singles ever sell or is his career history?

Now I know why I hate Christmas! Everyone gets so excited and tense and out of sorts and guess work becomes the tone of the day and wondering what is under the tree and rushing to bake all the cookies and…it’s just so tiresome. I just want to enjoy it all and not worry about it…It is what it is, and if a few cookies get burnt, no big deal Christmas will still come and blissfully it will still go!

And yup, my cynisism is running really high…..I HATE the holidays!!

I really don’t think this will happen. So she is selling big on Amazon, as it has been repeated ad nauseum on this site Amazon and Itunes are not that important for album sales. I think her demographic fits perfectly in the Amazon demographic though, and I really think the bulk of her sales will be that week.

so the sports radio is already blaring here.

But don’t mention to any sports fan that they are obsessed or OTT or can’t judge reality. They’ll deny it till doomsday. And you know, no matter what happens during the season or how any team performs the slate is wiped clean after the last game is played and then it is back to being OTT for next years team. And if they don’t have a horse in the race they’ll still pick favorites and poop all over the teams that are doing well…it’s just human nature. Ten rahs for the underdog! But when the big team wins the big game they are the first to say “I knew it all along”…they just had all players and all the good hype!

I already told my friend if he tries to leave before the closing credits finish playing Adam’s song I’d cut him’ ¦.now where did I leave that switch blade’ ¦

I am going today, too! Notes need to be compared. MY FRIEND CAN SO LEAVE THE MOVIE BEFORE THE CREDITS (THO I WILL MOVE INTO ANOTHER SEAT), BUT I AM NOT EVEN PUTTING ON MY JACKET. In fact, I will probably sing along. :)

    “Maybe it’s time for miracles…cause I ain’t giving up on love…”

I wish my co-workers didn’t mock my…interest in Adam so much. FEH.

BTW, I love me some Huffington Post. They never let me down. Ariana Huffington RULES.

  • suebrody

“I just read at Brian Mays website that Nov. 17 they put out an album titled ‘Queen Absloute Greatest’ hits. There is added commentary from Brian and Roger Taylor about some of the songs. He said it can be found exclusively at Best Buy in the US. FYI!”

Damn, another album I have to buy! I just got two from Adam, Kris’s, two from Muse, one from Alisan Porter–and now Queen! I was saving my last pennies for SuBo!!

(I’m kidding. Of course I will buy Queen. No one can GIVE me Subo’s album. Just no. And she will NOT outsell Adam in the states. Rhianna, GaGa, probably yes. SuBo, NOOOO FREAKING WAY.)

  • tierbee

And being signed to a label that sucks doesn’t help. I have her album, it’s really good.

I have Melinda’s album, too, it is excellent. I hope videos surface of her performance, she is just amazing.

  • cookcricket

Kris is taking the ‘credit’ for wearing wings and platform boots in that Elle photoshoot.

LOL, good for him! That was the most worthwhile picture of the entire shoot. ;)

  • gabilan

LOL! There’s no way Adam will be bare-chested on the AMA. Ain’t gonna happen. That particular Michigan reviewer has always been a pearl-clutcher whenever she writes about Adam. She’s fascinated by him, but watches his performances through her fingers, then goes “tsk-tsk” about it in her write-ups. She’s a trip. (the NYPost writeup she references was obviously a mistake; only the headline of the very short blurb even mentioned tassles).

Agree about Melinda Doolittle. Hers is the only Idol alum CD I own (until Adam’s gets here anyway) and I hate that no one but Hi-fi would sign her.

  • LaurelG

I really don’t think this will happen. So she is selling big on Amazon, as it has been repeated ad nauseum on this site Amazon and Itunes are not that important for album sales. I think her demographic fits perfectly in the Amazon demographic though, and I really think the bulk of her sales will be that week.

I disagree, I think Susan Boyle will sell more than Adam next week. But I agree with you about Amazon and iTunes, I don’t think either of those sites translate into huge numbers for album sales.

What I want to know is: what about QVC (for Subo) and AdamOfficial (for Adam)? THOSE are the numbers I’m curious about. Nobody, including folks on this site, seem to factor those sales into their calculations and I can’t figure out why not.

I also kinda wonder if the recalculation of Kris’s numbers this past week (even before the usual Friday recalculations) wasn’t because they initially didn’t include his projected KrisAllenOfficial sales in their totals. And I suspect Adam’s AO sales wil be even higher than Kris’s fansite sales because of the way they rolled out Adam’s single. I feel like the lone wolf over here harping on this point, but I really think Adam’s AO sales are a key part of the big picture that people are overlooking.

  • suebrody

Have you seen the rehearsal vids? Adam is going to wear a Bowie t-shirt!

(j/k, but he is not going bare chested. That’s just stupid. People would focus too much on his chest and not on his singing.)

  • Truthiness

. No one can GIVE me Subo’s album. Just no. And she will NOT outsell Adam in the states. Rhianna, GaGa, probably yes. SuBo, NOOOO FREAKING WAY.

The type of people that buy music in stores, or the CDs from Amazon, and not singles from iTunes, are just the type of people that SuBo appeals to. So yeah way she’s going to kick Adam’s ass next week. That QVC thing was evil genius and SuBo has been out performing her music on the interview circuit this past week(s) and things like DWTS BEFORE her album drops, so consider it pump primed. And yes, it’s very sad that SuBo will sell anything, much less the large amount I expect her to move. I don’t get it, but it’s so going to happen.

David Cook got a really good review from his Canada concert. This reviewer also attended Daughtry’s concert earlier and has a link to that review on this page.

    http://www.thescreamingmeanie.com/2009/11/another-screaming-review-david-cook.html

I love cook fanboys. This part made me laugh:

“Speaking of the crowd. There seemed to be three very distinct groups of fans. There were the women (most of which seemed to be 40-something cougars), the geriatrics (who were comped tickets by the casino), and then there was me – the lone man who was there because he wanted to be there and not because he was dragged against his will by his girlfriend.

    That’s right, I’m a man, I’m a fan, and I’m not gay!”

ETA: And this part made me smile.

“What can I say about David Cook’s voice?? This cat can flat out sing! He never has any trouble hitting the high notes, and his voice is just as strong at the end of the show as it is at the beginning. And I like that Mr. Cook sounds like a man when he sings – could be a macho thing.”

For clarification purposes only….and because his numbers were easy to find.

    David Cook “David Cook”

Total album sales 1,250,000 (and it is still selling)
    Total digital sales 150,000
    Canada sales (total) 50,000
    No international totals found

All hard copy sales of an album (Big box outlets, Amazon, official websites, etc.) these numbers are reported to SoundScan and are counted [and you better bet your boots that RCA is making sure every last CD is counted....I would even bet CDs that are given away as prizes (like on TV talk shows) and as radio gifts are counted...even if it is the record company buying from itself to give the CD away [someone in the know please respond].

Digital sales are from I-tunes, and Amazon MP3s, and anywhere else you download the whole album to your computer or I-pod.

“Mail” distributed hard copy albums, like from a fan site or Amazon or Barnes and Nobel account for about 15% (usually) of all album sales. But for some Albums this may skew higher based on marketing practicies. I think they have really pushed SuBo for this…since her album is pretty much craptastic they wanted purchasers to buy for the back story and not for the music. That is why her marketing company has been really pushing pre-sales. Once someone hears all the “stuff” the market will dry-up pretty fast, IMHO.

  • justshootme

I do not get the SuBo thing at all. I was especially surprised that her album was only a couple of notches below Adam’s on Itunes Pop chart. Who would buy her to download? The QVC/Amazon sales made a little more sense to me, since I figured those were probably gifts for gramma/teacher/secret santa. Which would suck for all the gramma/teacher/secret santas. I will be sooo pissed if that thing shows up in my xmas grab bag. Hohoho. Not.

  • AndreaH

    NO Adam. Just NO!! http://blog.imperfectparent.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/adam-zodiac.jpg

I honestly can’t imagine Adam wearing any kind of nipple gear for his AMA performance. However, one of his dancers could get away with it.

I agree with others that SuBo will outsell Adam but I don’t expect her to have much longevity. She’s more of a curiosity than a true artist and I think the curiosity factor as well as her back story are the reasons her first album will do well. Also, the QVC marketing will certainly boost her sales.

Actually, I’m happy for her. She’s living her dream.

I thought Kris was going to be on Ellen on Monday, but according to her site, he is actually on Tuesday. And from this brief video clip, it looks like he is there by himself rather than with the band, so acoustic LLWD.

I don’t get the SueBo thing at all (well, except for the back story) and I doubt she’ll have much of a career in terms of longevity. Although she could probably make a mint simply recording Christmas albums every year — for whatever reason, people seem to gobble those up.

Adam’s album is well above SueBo’s on iTunes at the moment. He’s at #34 and she’s at #46. (if anyone cares, Kris is at #20 (standard CD) and #23 (deluxe CD) ). One album to watch out for is the Twilight “New Moon” soundtrack — it’s currently #2 on the iTunes chart, behind John Mayer.

You’re not alone. I figure we’ve got at least 40k AO in pre-sales, probably 20k from Amazon. There’s also it’s high pre-sales Best Buy ranking..but I don’t know what Best Buy considers a good pre-sale number to come up with a guesstimate from that source and his deluxe album was doing very well on iTunes for a good bit of time. Either way, I’m thinking Adam has easily approached 100k in pre-sales alone. I just don’t tend to talk this way since anxiety seems to be the order of the day. ;)

I think Susan’s numbers are being way, way overestimated. It’s like when Paul Potts was kicking ass on Amazon and then his album came out in the US and he didn’t even crack the Top 20 on the BB200.

I love your positive thinking! I think his album presales are going to be good, too, and I think RCA knows just what they are, which is why they’ve been willing to sink some serious cash into him. I’d still be really surprised if he came up with the same kind of numbers either of the two Davids did last year, but since few in the industry seem to be pulling off the sales lately as compared to previous releases, I think that’s to be expected.

I know I often sound like a Debbie Downer, especially in terms of Adam’s potential sales. But I just went on Adam’s official site — there are currently 626 people listed as being online. It’s not that popular a site — at least not for the less invested Adam fans. I really can’t see 40,000 people even being aware that Adam’s online site has the album available for sale. As far as I an tell, only a small portion of Adam’s fans go on that site very much. Same thing with Kris’ official site — until very recently, the official sites were so badly designed and managed that fans went elsewhere to keep up with their favorite artist. So I just can’t see that many people ordering his album through AO — especially at the too expensive $24.99 price when they could simply go on amazon or iTunes or Walmart or wherever and order it for a lot less.

This is probably true, but I think almost every Adam fan knew the album was up for sales there. The delaying of FYE on itunes caused that and then the fact that they released WWFM and MP from AO and MP only if you bought the album. Their strategy turned a lot of fans to AO for purchase.

My SuBo tirade for the umpteenth time….

People do not always use their best thought processes when it comes to spending their hard earned money. They are easily led by their social conscience, their addictions, their “do gooder” mentality, or their “poor little match girl” thought process.

SuBo is 95% a “poor little match girl” spending process. I would think that her purchasing demographic is heavily made up of those that buy girl scout cookies, buy lemonade on street corners, always drop a $1 in the salvation army bucket, pay their tithing or fill the basket as it is being passed at Sunday service. These are people who will buy a CD from street musicians when they are on vacation, will always buy the CD from the intro band when they go to a performance tour for a big name act. They are a sucker for “home made gifts” they purchase at a State fair…and have a tendency to post all of their kids school projects on the fridge and leave them up for years and years because “they are so cute”. And we’ll just glance over QVC and garage sales and Saturday flea markets.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this shopping mentality. Many of us do bits and pieces of this all the time…but this is the core group who will support SuBo. And yes, they probably could care less what the Album sounds like….its all about warming their heart and making themselves feel good by buying the album because SuBos story is so moving. And yes, thousands of these CDs will find their way into “Grandma’s” Christmas stocking and just as fast into the pile for next year’s garage sale.

It’s all about human nature and SuBo’s marketing team taking advantage of the “good intentions” that reside in many a warm heart. Personally, I think it is really sad. But, hopefully Susan will get her meager share (as opposed to what Simon and Co. will get), will be able to afford a very nice house and will live comfortably for many years having had her 15 minutes of fame. And someday she will be a Trivia question on some game show.

  • jms

girlygirl, I know it’s not a popular on line site and I’ve only been there a few times myself. But most other fan sites posted about the offer and pointed people at it. I ordered there for a few different reasons (1) drm free downloads of the single and bonus songs (2) pretty, pretty hard copy book of adam. Another reason fans might have chosen to spend the money there..they made the single available there first and if you bought the album with the book of pretty you’d get the download of the single immediately. Also, while there aren’t lots of people on-line, they have over 35,000 people that created user accounts on the site, odds are a good portion of them signed up for the newsletter. I think people are really underestimating this as a source of pre-sales.

  • AndreaH

Don’t feel bad, you aren’t the only one. I ordered it because it was on my Mom’s Xmas wish list. My Mom is close to 80. She doesn’t like Adam’s music but loves Melinda Doolittle. I purchased that one for her too. I also purchased Melinda’s album for me. I love her.

You’re right, karenw, I mean peeps need to get a grip (not a clip)! Some random yahoo blogger posts a fake headline about nipple clamps taken totally out of context and then it spreads like wildfire, and the whole thing is simply preposterous. Any original mention of nipple accoutrements was in regards to the fetishists that appeared in the streets outside the FYE video shoot and was somehow extended to Adam at the AMAs. Do y’all not recall discussing the freak show paraded right here on MJs just a few days ago???

I don’t think there was anyway to work her cats into the performance. :)

Honesly, I suspect a gig like this would be too much pressure for her. Didn’t she not show up for a couple because it was too much for her? I think SuBo has a nice voice, but she will probably never do any original music. It will always be covers, which is fine because there is a market for that.

I hope she sells a gazillion albums so she can be financially secure and only have to perform if she wants to. I also think she shouldn’t do live performances, but perhaps taped specials…i.e. Christmas ones, etc.

Word to all of this. And all the talk as well about how people were going to be going to AO to buy the single…yeah, not seeing that happened. And yes yes, people got the single free when they got the album, but not a lot of people knew to go to AO for it, and certainly in this economy, pretty book and all, that people are willing to outlay 24.99, when buying it from Amazon or a physical store, will cost much less.

I would say there is under 10,000 rabid fans that go online for Adam. I am just going by the amount of people who have been at the cellcasts during the tour. A question for all you numbers geeks though. I was wondering about the Amazon sales. I think someone said Amazon accounts for about 5% of all CD sales, right?. Well, if Adam is now the highest presales for Amazon, beating out Clay ( 600,000 TOTAL, not just on Amazon-units sold first week) and Cook ( 300,000) , can’t we get an estimate out of that or am I overlooking something?

  • saga

Adam also Tweeted about his single, and well there you go in terms of sales.

I don’t think purchases of his album and single equate. For one thing, anyone seeing what Adam tweeted was already an Adam fan. Plus, let’s face it, without much publicity, the majority of Adam music buyers at this point are also already already fans, and most of those fans are going to want his album. Knowing the single is on that album, many probably didn’t buy it separately. I mean, if you want to hear the single FYE in the meantime, all you have to do is go to AO or a kajillion You-Tubes. I do think FYE sales will pick up after its visually released Sunday night and after Adam begins visiting radio stations next week. It’s only been officially out for a couple (2 or 3?) weeks–all without much promo–so I think it needs time before we declare it a failure.

Just got a message from Amazon UK that my 2 CDs were shipped today :-)

    Adam ´s CD:
Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 154 in Music

    Kris ´ CD
Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank: 1,861 in Music
Buy new: £8.9817 Used & new from £7.69

Some people are already reselling their CDs at a lower price.

Hmm, but Clay was how many years ago when AI was new and shiny and people were still under the impression that you had to pay for music. Can’t even begin to estimate based on Clay’s sales, IMO.

Was iTunes around for Clay though? Wouldn’t that have changed the % share for Amazon at that time?

Yeah, it’s too bad SuBo could corner the social outcast market before Adam could get to it. He probably wouldn’t have won it anyway, seeing how society today still is more accepting of cat people than gay people. ;-)

I’m getting anxious and excited now, even though I’ve heard the album streaming. I suppose I still have Down the Rabbit Hole to look forward to. Anything else we’ve not heard?

I don’t expect to be so lucky as to receive my CD today though. Oh well… On to the AMAs… I’m both nervous and excited for Adam for that performance. And, no, I don’t believe he’ll be shirtless or wearing tassles. WTF?!

You’re overlooking where not all pre-oders become orders. So the percentage is even less accurate in trying to determine any real number of ultimate sales from them.

  • saga

Hmm, but Clay was how many years ago when AI was new and shiny and people were still under the impression that you had to pay for music. Can’t even begin to estimate based on Clay’s sales, IMO.

That’s not what Studio is saying. It’s been reported by Amazon that Adam has the highest presales (on Amazon) of any debuting idol ever. She was just trying to estimate how many CD’s we’re talking based on the fact that Amazon has 5% of the market and how much the idols sold their first week.

In this goes assuming that all the amazon sells the first week were preorders but that shouldn’t be such a bad assumpition imo.

  • Teri63

Eh, thats not true. Everyone that bought the album were able to download FYE digitally on the spot.

That’s true, I totally forgot about that and the whole debate over whether it would count as a single sale. Sorry, I’m away from the computer a lot with my job so, while I try to keep up, I don’t always get to read each and every thread. So, was there ever a definitive decision on that? Did the “free” download get credited as a single sale, or was it absorbed in the album sale price?

  • gabilan

Yeah, it’s too bad SuBo could corner the social outcast market before Adam could get to it. He probably wouldn’t have won it anyway, seeing how society today still is more accepting of cat people than gay people.

Well obviously Adam needs to get a few cats then. Gay cat people FTW!

  • saga

Did the ‘free’ download get credited as a single sale, or was it absorbed in the album sale price?

If you bought the album the free download doesn’t count as single sales if I have understood this correctly. You could also buy the single without bying the album and that would be counted as a single sale. There has been some debate if all those sales were reported but I don’t really care.

RE: Adam (and other people, including friends, people he worked with and fans) tweeting about his album — Yeah, but Kris tweeted about his single and album…not only that, but so did several of his fellow Idols. And I’ve seen lots of fans tweeting about how they bought Kris’ album and how much they love it. Yet the predicted sales for it aren’t particularly high. And if you go off how many followers Adam has on twitter (233,937), how do you account for his relatively low sales totals (so far) for TFM and FYE? Combined, those two singles have sold only about half as many copies as Adam has people following him on twitter. In contrast, Kris has likely now sold more copies of LLWD than he has followers (120,828) on twitter.

In short, noise on twitter does not necessarily mean equal sales totals. Many of Adam’s followers will buy his music, but many of them won’t. Same thing with Kris, Archie, David Cook or any other Idol who is on twitter.

well, Adamofficial.com currently ranks above MJ’s in terms of traffic rank in the US right now per Alexa.com.
    Current ranks:

    Adamofficial-10998
    Mjsbigblog-12421

Who knows, maybe Amazon had a larger market share when Clay debuted, if itunes weren’t big then (which would increase the Adams estimate, using this model). I have no clue.

  • smartcookie

can’t we get an estimate out of that or am I overlooking something?

That would put him over 30K in preorders from Amazon’ ¦

I don’t know where you got that figure from, but you can’t depend on anything when it comes to Amazon. Their rankings and sales figures are very strange and always have been. For their rankings, they won’t count multiple sales to the same person to keep artists and authors from buying up a gabillion of their own item and vaulting to the top of the list, plus they take into account page views and other things they won’t disclose. In terms of books, which is what I know about and where Amazon started, authors know that you can’t depend on Amazon for anything. They also take a larger chunk of the profits than most vendors, so the people selling the book generally prefer to put their promotional efforts into other vendors — like the exclusive songs — because they know they’ll make more money elsewhere. Artists and authors know that Amazon is cutting them off at the knees with the used sales, which are sometimes available *before* the actual book or cd lay-down date, so they’re not big on promoting Amazon, either, if they have a brain.

Also, we don’t know if Amazon’s share of the market was even smaller when Clay’s and Cook’s pre-orders hit, which would mean that Clay’s or Cook’s cds sold through Amazon might be 1% of their sales, not 5%. In Clay’s case, since people were still able to shop at Sam Goody and actual music stores that don’t exist anymore, and he sold something like half a million physical singles that way, I wouldn’t surprised if his Amazon sales were more like a quarter of one percent of his total sales.

I casually watched S7, but didn’t care who won and didn’t buy either album. But since following the Davids on twitter, I probably WOULD be more likely to buy new music from them for two reasons:
    1. I would be more aware of it, and
    2. I feel a more personal connection to them by keeping up with them via their tweets.

You’re overlooking the fact that just because Amazon accounts for 5% of the overall CD market sales doesn’t mean it accounted for 5% of Clay’s 1st week sales or 5% of David Cook’s 1st week sales. For all we know it was 2% of Clay’s 1st week sales and 10% of David’s or whatever.

Too, I think there was some discussion about Amazon mysteriously dropping Clay’s debut album from its latest top preorders ever list while keeping his 3rd album (the covers one). I’ll go look it up after posting this but I think the issue was that there was a top Amazon preorders ever list posted a few years ago that had Clay’s debut really high (this was when Norah Jones broke the record for top preorders ever) and above some of the albums that are still on the Amazon top preorders list ever. That’s really murky so I’ll try to find the lists to clear up exactly what I’m talking about. Based on that all I’m trying to say is it’s possible that estimating anything based on Clay’s debut album on Amazon might be pointless.

In other news Carrie’s been rehearsing for the taping of the CNN Heroes special today. Someone just tweeted from backstage:

This has been 1 crazy week for Carrie. Conan’s show Monday performing Temporary Home plus a phone press conference promoting her TV special. Ellen taping Tuesday performing Cowboy Casanova and Before He Cheats. AMA rehearsals Wednesday. Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday where she performed 5 songs. More AMA rehearsals Friday plus the taping of Faith Hill’s Home For The Holidays special last night. CNN Heroes taping today performing Change. AMAs tomorrow. That’s after a week of New York promo when her album came out and then a week of CMA promo plus performing/cohosting the CMA Awards plus an Opry performance last Saturday.

I respect her work ethic so much.

Yeah, but using that model it’s all about market share. If Clay had a reported opening week of 600K and Amazon has 5% of the market share, then it would be reasonable to think that Amazon sold 30K. It could also be so that Amazon has a higher market share the first week of sales, or the market share could have been less or larger the year Clay was a runner-up. Or maybe Clay has a demographic that orders a lot from Amazon or maybe they wouldn’t order from Amazon a lot.

  • Teri63

There has been some debate if all those sales were reported but I don’t really care.

I’m with you there. I don’t really care, either, to be honest, but thank you very much for cluing me into what finally came from that interesting debate! My point was just because of all the various extenuating circumstances (which now includes the distinct possibility that a lot of people got the single for “free”), I don’t think singles sales in Adam’s case are indicative of what his album sales will be. I truly can’t even guess what they’ll be because I truly don’t understand the whole numbers thing in the first place, and this year seems to be skewing really off course in terms of what has occurred in the past for Idols.

I’m just really happy that Adam has put out an album of which he should be very proud that is, for the most part, being critically acclaimed. My gut feeling is that he’ll sell enough to warrant being maintained by his label and making another album, and THAT would make all of his fans supremely happy while, obviously, making his dreams come true!

My collector’s edition just arrived, listening right now.

I am seriously stingy about money…clip coupons, hardly ever dine out, etc…not out of necessity but as a holdover from my childhood. Nevertheless, I was more than willing to fork over the $$$ for the collector’s edition. Such is the power of the Adam.

My estimate for collector’s edition pre-orders is more like 10,000. I think there are a lot of rabid “completists” out there. The reason that there are usually less than 1,000 online at AO at any given time is that the fanbase is divided among AO, ONTD_AI, IDF, MJ’s, etc…

  • Trina

Not only that, but the Clay CD that made the Amazon list of the Top 10 pre-orders of all time wasn’t the one that sold over 600,000 its first week. The CD that made the list was a Thousand Different Ways which was released in 2006 and sold 211,000 its first week.

Yes and that’s actually a weird situation that might not even be right. I looked it up for anybody who might be interested.

January 29 2007: Amazon puts out a press release saying Norah Jones’s Not Too Late album is its top preordered album of all time. It says that other top 10 preordered albums are:

Jones’ second album “Feels Like Home”; “Taking The Long Way” by Dixie Chicks; “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” and “The Best of 1990-2000″ by U2; “Bridge Over Troubled Water/This Is The Night” and “Measure of a Man” by Clay Aiken; “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by The Beatles; and “Awake” by Josh Groban.

Note that this press release came out after Clay’s 3rd album (the covers album called A Thousand Different Ways) came out – that’s the 1 Trina‘s talking about that sold 211k in its 1st week.

But the press release that says SuBo has the top preordered album ever at Amazon has a top 10 that includes Clay’s covers album but not his debut despite the 2007 version of the list having his debut album not his covers album. Either they listed the wrong album for Clay in the 2nd press release or they accidentally left off his debut album from the list or there’s something else messed up about the list.

If they messed that up who knows about their accuracy reporting anything else, including SuBo’s status and for that matter Adam’s compared to any other idol.

Hutchinson joins Gavin Rossdale, David Cook and Lady GaGa in the short list of new artists to have a second single chart at Hot AC in 2009.

I would love for your numbers correct, but I’m looking at about 130,000 to 150,000 just because Kris and Adam seem to be selling alot less than the Davids last year. I’ll be able to guess better after we get Kris’s numbers next week. I suspect Adam will sell about 25 percent more than Kris.

Yup and I had said the day that list came out I thought something was off. I was a big Clay fan during the time both the albums came out and his debut trajectory on Amazon was nothing like the one they listed. A Thousand Different ways did well on there but nothing like his debut which was a #1 fixture on Amazon.

By the way Tess, now that Adam made the same comment as Carrie did about not wanting to make the mistake of making an album that doesn’t resemble what they did on the show, do you also think he is dumb? Both were clearly referring to the post-Idol debut album and in no way suggesting that evolution on subsequent albums is a bad idea.

My safe guess for Adam’s 1st week = 150k. I think Andrea and SuBo are going to smoke everybody. Taylor Swift too possibly.

If you are tired of talking about Adam’s numbers, we can talk about how Kerry Kolsch, who claims to be a criminal layer, but who has spent the last 6 months writing numerous articles bashing Kris — and posting nasty comments in articles written by others — screaming “conspiracy” at the top of her lungs — is now evidently publishing a book that will show how Arkansas fixed the voting.

    From her posts on AO:

“Events got bigger and bigger and more organized. Politicians, chamber of commerce, radio, TV, newspapers, universities, and the Task Force included all types of PR people plus donations and fund raising of tens of thousands of dollars. Thousands went to Kris’s family and to buy California Go Phones. Keep in mind that Danny performed at a sports event but Kris hadall these people just to see him. They were taught all methods of voting, Power texting Gizmo and had Adam’s phone lines blocked on the East Coast. I have names dates pictures, video before it is gone. Look here and look for the Alice 10 7.7 Kris Allen Watch Party at the Peabody Hotel 2009. This is a small vote party that AT&T sponsored. (300-400 people) The reason I want you to see it is that when they scan the room you can see the 15-foot AT&T balloon in the Lobby. You can see a lot of Kris Allen Shirts and you can see on the home page that the radio station is promoting the Kris Allison and Adam concert.”

If this woman really is a lawyer, wouldn’t her time be much better spent than yelling about the results of a reality tv show? And I’m sorry, but if a small group of people in a small state like Arkansas can be this organized and efficient, I think they should be put in charge of ficing the USA’s health care and educational systems, end hunger and trying to bring about world peace.

Unfortunately, since she posts this crap on AO, there are people who believe what she is yelling about. If she really has LEGITIMATE proof, she should be going to the FCC and whatever other governmental agencies would be involved with this sort of “fraud” — not yelling about it on the internet.

Adam’s website will have a new look tomorrow!

This is a friendly heads-up that Adam Official will be OFFLINE on Sunday, November 22, between roughly 10am and 3pm EST, so you would do well to go enjoy your Sunday elsewhere. The reason for this is that we will be launching the BRAND NEW Adam Official tomorrow, featuring a complete design overhaul and stunning new visuals, while retaining all of the site features you’ve grown accustomed to (and then some), plus all of the content you’ve already seen on AO so far. Your user accounts and all your forum posts and other contributions to the site (art, etc.) will also be reloaded into the new site, so do not fear for that. Having said all this, our launch timeline is extremely aggressive (Adam was tweaking the design until the very last minute, so we had a historically short window in which to make it real), and we do expect to be fixing a few bugs and re-loading certain portions of the site on Monday and Tuesday, but we decided that this was worth the risk in order to get the new AO launched ahead of the AMAs and release date. Thanks in advance for your patience and get ready to feast your eyes tomorrow afternoon!

Oh me of little faith… MY CD ARRIVED TODAY! Now I can stop hating the rest of you who have yours too. LOL

The “book of pretty” (tm somebody here) is nice. I think I’m going to need to study michelin man a little more to “get it,” but it is pretty too. :-) (And I’m one of the few whose first impression of the CD cover was that it was beautiful, and perfect… I still feel this way.)

So, we still have to wait ’til Monday for the “extra” bonus track, is that right?

Also, am I weird for not wanting to crack the seal on the CD?! I’m laughing at myself here. What have I become?

P.S. Seriously, no offense to cat lovers intended by my prior (attempted humorous) post. I’ve nothing against cats myself, other than severe allergies. :-)

    ETA:

I don’t think it would shock anyone to know that there be crazy people on the interwebz.

    LMAO!

If you are tired of talking about Adam’s numbers, we can talk about how Kerry Kolsch, who claims to be a criminal layer, but who has spent the last 6 months writing numerous articles bashing Kris ‘” and posting nasty comments in articles written by others ‘” screaming ‘conspiracy’ at the top of her lungs ‘” is now evidently publishing a book that will show how Arkansas fixed the voting.

This is funny. All fan sites do this. I saw several Adam fan sites exploring major voting strategies (Go phones, Gizmo, texting, calling, you name it). It’s not exactly a secret!

I am thinking 125,000 for Adam. Anything above 180,000 I would say is amazing, 125,000-180,000 would be great, and anything below 100,000 would be a real negative.

  • Eileen99

    Kerry Kolsch:

    Cool story bro.

  • weareallinnocent

BTW, I’m officially making no prediction and trying hard not to even think about what I might expect for Adam’s first week sales. I’ve been really floored by the low numbers for AI8 singles and predictions for Kris so far. I’m not allowing myself to have expectations.

That said, where is Adam’s CD being released this week besides US, Canada, and UK? I’d be most interested in his international numbers, as I believe he’ll be more readily received in other (less stodgy) places…

Matt’s afternoon concert is going on, and I tried to listen to the cellcast. I can’t hear much, but there seems to be a lot of screaming between and sometimes during songs, so it sounds like people are excited. Here are some of the songs I heard:

    1. Have a Little Faith in Me
    2. I Don’t Wanna Be
    3. When You Love A Woman
    4. My Funny Valentine
    5. Georgia

Well, my CD from AO didn’t arrive yet. *sniffles* But according to the tracking number it’s at least in my state! So I’ll likely have it Monday.

As for Adam’s sales predictions. I was going to venture a very inexperienced and unsubstantiated 125,000-135,000. I see Q3 weighed in on Planet Fierce with 120,000-150,000. So I at least feel I’m in the ballpark.

  • Keel

I’m having a hard time getting a handle on the kinda low estimates for Adam that peeps have. We know that the sales numbers for albums have gone down 13% since last year on average and last week’s sales supposedly went down 20% as compared to the same week the prior year. So based on that, I am assuming that even if album sales are down, then Adam’s sales should be around 250K at the lowest (keying this off David Cook’s 280K last year who was less a singles seller and more of an album seller coming off the show). Then, if you factor in the type of unprecedented promo Adam has been getting and the awesome timing of that promo, I’m factoring that he could go up to 300K — and this is me being somewhat on the conservative side! I realize that he is polarizing but I just don’t get that the polarizing effect is to the tune of around 100K or so less in sales because of it. There is, after all, something to the old adage of all publicity is good publicity. With the promo he is receiving, he should definitely reap the benefits of having as many casual to invested fans as possible knowing that his album is coming out next week, no? That is 90% the battle IMO. Plus, as we’ve heard, the Amazon pre-orders are unusually high — even if there is some doubt expressed as to the “highest for any Idol ever” part of that news flash.

So what’s holding back everyone’s estimates?

  • Diane

Ok, I’m gonna weigh in on Adam’s numbers for next week. I’m not here to burst anyone’s bubble–I’m just giving my opinion. I was not a fan of Adam on the show although I did like a couple of his songs. But who can’t like Adam?! He has a great personality and a mad talent, so I hope he is successful. But I have to admit for me (hee hee), I was disappointed in his CD because it was so overproduced and electronic sounding that you can’t really hear Adam’s voice which can be quite beautiful sometimes. Being the idol fan that I am, I know that most fans will be their #1′s album regardless. But will he sell to the general public? I’m not going to throw numbers out because who knows!, but here’s my prediction: I think the AMA performance will cause lots of people to download FYE (if that’s what he’s singing), but not the album so much. I hope for Adam and his fans that I am wrong.

    *ducking*

  • Diane

buy! not be! where’s that edit function?!

  • weareallinnocent

Keel – David Cook won. Adam didn’t. Maybe take the 20% drop from Archie’s 190K in first week sales and you’ll get to the lower estimated place. :-) Add that neither Cook nor Archie was polarizing in any legitimate sense, and well, there ya go…

  • universal

So what’s holding back everyone’s estimates?

Single sales, Kris’s album sales numbers…
I’m sticking with my earlier prediction of 140-150K.

  • bridgeymah

Sigh – getting a little tired of the whole sales prediction game, especially when it gets all caught up in how many the ghosts of idol past sold. Meh.

I am sure Adam’s sales will be just dandy. And so I guess that is my prediction…

    Dandy.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ CindyM

David had an extremely successful coronation song, an extremely successful first post-ai single, a larger fanbase than adam and uh,,, he won the show. Haven’t seen anything from Adam yet to think he’ll do as well his first week. Especially don’t think so after seeing Kris’s competition’s sales this week.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

So based on that, I am assuming that even if album sales are down, then Adam’s sales should be around 250K at the lowest (keying this off David Cook’s 280K last year who was less a singles seller and more of an album seller coming off the show).

I think Adam will sell half of what Cook sold, so that is about 140,000. It has nothing to do with talent or quality of the album, but the size of the AI fanbase and the economy. Cook also sold a little over 100,000 for LO on the first week, and let’s not even talk numbers on TOML. Adam’s single sells don’t even come close do that.

Adam didn’t win, so that off the bat he should be expected to selll less than Cook. He didn’t have a popular cornation song (and for that matter, neither did Kris, even though he did sell more than 200,000 copies of it). Adam is polarizing where Cook really was and is mainstream.

Kris and Adam aren’t selling as well as the Davids, and it has nothing to do with talent. Both Kris and Adam are very attractive and talented and they both have put out solid debut albums. So there is something else that is keeping their numbers down. We have debated that for weeks now, and no one really knows for sure. However, established artists are also suffering. That is why I think it is a gaurantee that Adam will tour as that is where the money is made.

  • BeckyMD

Which version(s) of FYE have those bonus tracks? I know MP is included in itune deluxe. What’s about Down the Rabbit hole, Voodoo, and Can’t be without you (I may get the name wrong for this one). I’ve pre-order FYE on Itunes. But if I have to, I’ll buy another one just to get the bonus tracks.

As for the sales prediction, which number can give Adam a chance to make a second album? I love FYE and am positive it will sell well. But if it doesn’t and RCA stops pairing Adam up with these stellar music makers/producers, will Adam pull off an equally good or even better sophomore album by himself? I know we probably need to wait another one or two years for his next album, but I’m really curious which direction Adam will take? I hope FYE sells well, so Adam will have more leverage to make the second one. Maybe that one can be more conceptual.

  • Mtlfan

off topic…. 60,000 tickets were sold in 30 minutes today for the show of U2 next July in Montreal. Amazing!

  • lucy

So what’s holding back everyone’s estimates?

Single sales, very slow radio play for FYE, Kris’s sales, the fact that no single has gotten more than a tiny bit of radio play before the album’s first sales week. Nobody knows what to think about any of this. And I think that it cames as a shock, too, so it’s hard to know what to expect when your earlier expectations seem to have been shot to heck. Clearly, so far this year, the Idol fanbase doesn’t seem to be as interested as usual. And they’re who we count on for the first week’s sales …. With Adam’s promotion this week, especially the AMAs, maybe some non-AI-fan-types will buy a lot. But there’s really never been a comparable situation with an Idol, so do we actually know that a one-off performance on the AMAs by a brand-new performer is going to create new album-buying fans immediately, no matter how compelling the performance is?

  • Keel

bridgeymah, yeah, sorry about that. But the fact of the matter is that first week sales are generally all about the legacy AI fanbase, so the comparison to past Idols is the easiest and probably the most legitimate to make at this point. (Not saying, it’s perfect but there are worse gauges.) A few weeks after the initial album drop is when you begin to measure their success against peeps in their genre (IMO) and then you get a better sense for how they will compete against the big boys and girls in their particular genre — for that all important “outside of the bubble” success.

  • ai_fan

I believe Adam will do extremely well with album sales this week, but I have to agree with Cindy M. Right this minute, a year and a half after his idol journey ended, there are 4900+ people online at DC official and there are 800+ on AO. DC has an enormous fanbase, so I’m not sure about doing DC numbers, but you all might be right and he may very well exceed.

In any case, best wishes to Adam and his fans. I’m sure you have nothing to worry about.

  • Mtlfan

I would have tought that knowing that Kris sold more than Adam after idol would have calm her down… but she must be really crazy to go after this kind of stuff

  • lucy

Sigh ‘“ getting a little tired of the whole sales prediction game, especially when it gets all caught up in how many the ghosts of idol past sold. Meh.

What the heck else could you base it on?

The former Idols are the only people who’ve come on the scene in a comparable manner to Adam (though of course the individual circumstances of each are slightly different — and the AMA introduction may (or may not) be a really big difference where sales are concerned.)

I don’t see how you can compare Idols’ debuts to any other new non-Idol performers — since they have the tv exposure that other new recording artists don’t. But you can’t really compare them to established artists either, because they aren’t established as cd makers, they’re only established as talent-show contestants.

    My numbers for Adam’ ¦..

More than 1 and less than a million.

That should be pretty safe’ ¦.he, he.

Oh c’mon Tess! I can hear a lecture from Simon now about needing to take risks and not playing it safe! I say 160k for Adam.

Btw, we can’t say the Davids had the advantage of a better economy. Last year the recession was nearing its peak. I do think things were a lot worse in the winter, and are maybe back where they were last year at this time. We were constantly talking about how AI7 Idols are in a recession and cannot be compared to sales of AI5, for example. It might be fair to say that the music industry is worse than ever though, with sales steadily declining overall for the past 2 years.

  • http://littleglitterlittleglam.blogspot.com TheSpindleshay

My prediction is that Adam’s sales will fall somewhere between good and better than good, definitely more than fine, but perhaps not excellent or outstanding. Initially.

Then, all hell will break loose somewhere between a week from now and month from now. Then perhaps a lull until the album is nominated for a Grammy, at which time it will go berzerkers.

My professional (stan) opinion. Feel free to hold me to it, because I really don’t care.

  • Tess

By the way Tess, now that Adam made the same comment as Carrie did about not wanting to make the mistake of making an album that doesn’t resemble what they did on the show, do you also think he is dumb?

He must be….but he hides it better than she does. And that isn’t what I was referring to when I called Carrie a puppet….but to each their own.
And, I must say that I am amazed that anyone pays attention to anything I say. Most people just laugh at my idiosyncrasies and move on.

  • weareallinnocent

Just thinking out loud here, but…

Maybe (coupled with the economy and drop in industry sales generally) this year’s sales reflect that AI made the show more about a perceived culture clash than about the music. And, we had less opportunity to hear music from the contestants (as opposed to chatter from the judges.) Reap what you sow, and all that…

Who knows, but it is jarring (to me.)

  • IndyMuse

I personaly think there is no way to call Adam’s sales until after the AMA performance. I think all rides on that. If it is not well received, I think maybe he will get around 125k. If it is the talk of the AMAs and everyone loves it, maybe over 300k.

  • Tess

Just got my album and it’s playing on my multi speaker Bose as I keyboard. I’ve set it with a heavy bass (I fuckin’ love bass) and I’ve set it loud enough that the windows only rattle a little bit.

I am totally amazed at the sound. And Adam’s voice is front and center…he never gets “drowned” out by anything. You can hear and understand every word.

Now I have a Bose system in my car so I think I’ll go for a nice slow drive under the stars with the windows rolled down (its still warm enough here) and blast the album away and remember a lot of real good times spent in a car under the stars back in my youth…except Car radios didn’t sound very good but I was probably too busy experiencing other things to really care.

  • 4Msrmyn

AO has a bad rep. I think most fans just pop in and out over there. I don’t know for sure, but I’ve seen the number 5000 for antd_ai. I’d guess they are mostly kids who are Adam fans. (However, I wouldn’t go there and say anything mean about any of the idols.) I’ve never seen it discussed here at MJ”s. Does she have demographics? Is this not allowed to be discussed?

I agree with this partly but everyone should also consider that this coming week is also Black Friday (First official day of Christmas Shopping) and traditionally music sales are higher then the average for the year. That is why all the Big players want to be released this week and most of the major labels push for their top artist to be released this week. IMHO

  • aa618892

I am not one who thinks it all rides on the AMA performance but the accumulation of promo coming up in the next few weeks. One performance is not going to be the be all end all. What I think will ensure Adam’s longevity which in my opinion is more important than initial numbers is this exceptional FYE album which I now have in my hands. I played this on my stereo and it sounds so much better than the stream of the album and I loved it then. My 17 year old daughter came out to listen ( she thought Adam was ok but has her own musical tastes) and she was blown away. She said “Mom you are totally getting me into this guy”. She could not believe his amazing voice. So Adam now has another fan. This is why I have to disagree that the album was overproduced, the snippets and the stream don’t even do it justice. Adam’s voice is extraordinary. So now back to enjoying the best CD I have heard in a long time.

  • anijsch

I think the AMA performance will cause lots of people to download FYE (if that’s what he’s singing), but not the album so much.

I have been wondering the same after a lot of people declared he will have big album sales after the single haven’t sky rocked. His genre is not known for huge album sales. It took Lady Gaga and Katy Perry some time and some hits to get good album sales.
It could work out with a huge idol fan base, which I don’t see if I look at his single sales.

. So there is something else that is keeping their numbers down. We have debated that for weeks now, and no one really knows for sure.

Imo it is the radio play that both Davids had during the summer that make a huge different. It gave people something to reference in connection with the albums.

And I am tired of Adam playing the celebrity card. He should have started to do something more music related some time back.
For most of the audience he must come across as another reality star, who plays celebrity on the red carpet.

I hava to disagree on that. The economy really hit the fan in the fall of 2008 after the Davids had released their singles and right about the time their albums dropped. But no one knew how long it would last and how deep it would go.

People can google the recession and it will tell you the start point, but it didn’t hit most people’s day to day lives until early 2009. I know we started laying off in January of 2009. People still had reserves and hoped the downturn would be short lived. Those reserves are now gone. The unemployement rate is double digits now. The longer it last, the worst it is for the day to day lives of every day people.

Got my deluxe CD today :) I loved the pics in the booklet but I wish it were bigger…a lot bigger LOL
honestly I would have preferred to have received the regular one from Amazon cuz I dont want to play the DE….so I shall have to keep waiting…:/
Im really looking forward to the performance tomorrow and I do think that if ppl like his performance and are interested in Adam as an artist it will encourage them to go and listen to more of his songs and buy his CD…or at least I would hope so, especially since the CD officially comes out the next day…
However, his performance has to be like EPIC in order to achieve that affect…
I mean I know tastes are very subjective but when an artist really impresses me I feel the need to support them…
but I have to be totally blown away in order to actually buy someone’s music and with Adam I was indeed blown away by his voice and his ability as a performer..hopefully others will experience the same thing…
here’s hoping he will excel :)

Indeed, the unemployment rating going on longer and getting bigger, has just gotten worse since this time last year, and yes this means that not only are the reserves less of those that might have had them, more people without disposable cash, but in times of uncertainty, people are less willing to part with their cash. So they make fewer purchases. I think this would tend to benefit the more established artists, because they are a known quantity and so people feel that if they are going to spend entertainment dollars, they want to take less of a chance of not liking it. Just my theory on the last one.

  • Tess

For most of the audience he must come across as another reality star, who plays celebrity on the red carpet.

Yup, Adam…just another Paris Hilton…famous for being famous.

And, if I remember correctly until mid September (2 months ago by my recogning, but I may not count real well) he was doing a performance every night for American Idol the Tour as was Kris and Allison. And then he came home and reworked his entire album (from all reports) and completed it in 6 weeks. And now he has taken a couple of weeks to pull a band together (which he needs because he is not a musician and doesn’t play an instrument), done 2 music videos, promoted a movie, and has helped create and has been rehearsing for an AMA performance.

Oh, and he has done a couple of private gigs, a Ford appearance, numerous photo shoots and interviews (which are just now seeing the light of day). So, yup, the fact he hasn’t done anything music related and has been wasting all his time being a “celebrity” there isn’t any hope for his musical career.

This may have something to it. The season as a whole was not as enjoyable as others previously. The show may have lost some of his identity with the different changes.

I think there is something to be said about the overall exhaustion of some type of tv shows.
The ratings are way down for some of the major Reality TV competition shows and from where I stand the activity in the forums is down too.

People get really invested in these type of shows and you can only do that for so many years before feeling tired and care less for the contestants.

The recession officially started in December 2007:

    http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2008/12/01/nber-makes-it-official-recession-started-in-december-2007/

As this makes clear, the fact that the recession had started in December 2007 was acknowledged on November 28, 2008, 11 days after DC released his CD and 18 days after Archie released his CD.

There has been a debate as to whether the recession has ended, with some saying that it ended as of July/August of 2009, while others dispute that. The NBER will issue something on that in 2010.

So, the economy was bad and worsening through 2008, with plenty of foreclosures, was acknowledged to be in a recession in December 2008 after all hell had broken loose in the banking industry related to all of those foreclosures, and stayed in a recession at least until July/August of 2009 and possibly beyond.

Hmm. Which slot are you talking about? The ‘if you like X, then get y,’ feature? Because if so, they’re paired together because they both have the tag of Reality Show and bundled together that way. If you go to Amazon and search for Kris Allen, 2 and 3 are Allison and Adam respectively. If you go to Kris’s detail page, he is also paired with Adam, Allison and ….SuBo. Allison is odd because they paired her with hersellf, rather than SuBo, but she has Adam and Kris on her ‘if you like X, then you might like Y.’

It really isn’t sorted beyond that Reality Show tag.

Ok, I think I need to put my 2cents in, I am not even going to try to predict the number of albums Adam is going to sell the first week, but I will bet my house that he will outsell Jordin, Kris, both Davids, Taylor, Daughtry, and he will come very close to Kelly and Carrie by this time next year. (knockles bleeding). Here is why: every song on the album is a gem, some are perfect singles: strut, fever, aftermath, a loaded smile is perfect for a romantic scene in a major movie, soaked and TFM will be big in Europe, btw they are already playing TFM on the radio there, etc, etc

another reason I am posting today rather the just lurking, Z100 has been playing wwfm all day long today, a much better first single in my mind, Fye is perfect for AMAs, but wwfm or fever are better for radio, imo.
Unfortunately, there is just not enough time for people outside AI fanbase to get interested, although there is a lot of buzz with the AMAs and Amazon, that is why i think it’s impossible to predict the numbers for next week, but Adam will be star for sure if we just give it some time.

well, Adamofficial.com currently ranks above MJ’s in terms of traffic rank in the US right now per Alexa.com.

Anyone knows how accurate Alexa is? Just curious because I see that David Cook official site has more than 4000 fans online, but Adam Official only around 1000, but DCO is ranked way below AO on Alexa. Just trying work out if DCO people counter is wonky because I’m not sure why there are that many people there.

So what’s holding back everyone’s estimates?

His singles sales. Adam doesn’t appear to have the number of hardcore fans that David Cook has (only half at the most by my reckoning), so any estimate would have to be well below that of David Cook. However I don’t take those estimates of 100K or worse seriously, those are more likely to be fans trying to lower their expectation so that they can feel better when the actual sales surpass their estimates (which will almost certainly happen with such low estimates). In the long term Adam may do better.

This may have something to it. The season as a whole was not as enjoyable as others previously

I agree with this so much. This season was just nasty, and I think the bitterness still lingers around the contestants which is unfortunate for them. I think that there will be low initial sales for all season 8 contestants because of it, and they will need a huge song to bring them success. My one hope for the show is that Ellen can bring in some joy and warmth back to the show.

…. This is why I have to disagree that the album was overproduced, the snippets and the stream don’t even do it justice. Adam’s voice is extraordinary. So now back to enjoying the best CD I have heard in a long time.

Delurking a bit to say that is one of the reasons I stayed away from the snippets and stream. I want to hear the real thing w/o being influenced by bits and pieces that may not be streaming on good audio.

    Edit to fix quotes (hopefully)

but I will bet my house that he will outsell Jordin, Kris, both Davids, Taylor, Daughtry, and he will come very close to Kelly and Carrie by this time next year.

You expect him to sell 5 million albums, or close to 10 million albums in 1 year? That should be interesting to watch.

  • JazzRocks

Funny – I enjoyed the season more than any of the others I watched (S3 – S7). I thought Adam brought much needed originality & excitement. What I didn’t like was the 4 judges and unfortunately that mistake lives on this year (2010).

  • Truthiness

This is why Adam’s sales should be huge.

Why? The first video wasn’t pushed to be on TV, heck it was free on iTunes. It was maybe supposed to be something promotional for the movie, but that never really went anywhere for the MV or music in terms of promotion of the music, and not the film. The second MV hasn’t been aired yet, the private promotions and Ford stuff were all pretty closed to the public. Only YouTubes or some pictures were part of them, so while Adam was doing it musically, nothing was seen by the public.

The only peripherally music promotions that Adam besides for 2012 since the tour ended, was the one time on Ryan’s show to premiere FYE. He’s been doing musical stuff since then, but behind the scenes. And yes, the rest of his promotion has been non-musical, and heck, so was 2012 at the end of the day. Which dead horse, I think has been a HOOGE mistake. And I think the single sales reflect that and it’s worrisome leading into next week’s first week sales. All the music promotion begins the night before his record drops. BRILLIANT! but I’ll just let it go at that bitterness and move on. But that brilliance, Kris’s relatively weak numbers, the abysmal single sales and worse radio coverage for FYE and lack of ramp time for WYWFM, are all why I think that Adam will have “disappointingly” low numbers.

But we’ll see in a week’s time, after all. Well you all will, I’ll be passed out from all the vodka/Xanax cocktails I’ll have been chugging.

Are we still taking bets on Adam’s opening numbers? I’m thinking that his promo is so ubiquitous and so well-timed (AMA the night before his album drops) that he may end up in that 250-300K range. What say you, mj’ers?

  • jpfan

I’m taking that house bet because there is no way Adam is selling 5 million albums in a year.

Just to keep track (I’m too lazy to actually research this) but Daughtry went platinum in 4-5 weeks (tops) and double platinum in 8 weeks. Maybe 2 months after that he hit triple plat.

I don’t think Adam will even match Cook’s sales from last year. He had pretty great numbers until January although he didn’t come near Daughtry.

Adam will outsell Jordin’s first though. That seems like a safe bet.

Well, in the subject of recession, I guess people can discuss if things were better a year ago or this year, but when it comes to music sales, every week HDD posts how that week compares to the week before and a year ago, and how is the year in general. I posted these quotes in another thred the other day, but maybe they could go here too.

This is what HDD says about this week’s sales

The market was up 3% vs. last week, down 21% vs. same week last year and still down 13% year to date. Is it 2010 yet?

This is what HDD said a year ago (the week DCook’s album was released)

The market was up 27% vs. last week, down 24% vs. the same week last year and still down 13% year to date.

All in all, it doesn’t seem like music is being more affected than it was a year ago.

I can’t edit sorry. I’m not really sure how long it took Carrie to sell 7 million albums but I remember reading that she sold some crazy number the week of Black Friday (which was NOT her debut week) – 400 or 500K. So she’s another one who probably went platinum in less than a month.

I honestly think Daughtry’s album was certified platinum in three weeks (but maybe I’m wrong on that.
And he finished fourth and had no magazine covers, AMA, SNL, TV promo (except for a song used on a Fox show), nada. His success was quite a surprise.

If Adam is your favorite Idol of all, or Kris, or Allison, or whoever yeah I’m sure this season is your favorite. Everyone has a season where they get an ultimate favorite and they overrate that season (season 4 for me). I just think this season was the meanest of all. I’ve said this before but there was the deliberate attempt at a culture clash between Danny and Adam, which created an even heavier fan war than normal because it brought in a whole set of personal beliefs. David Cook official site has more than 4000 fans online, but Adam Official only around 1000, but DCO is ranked way below AO on Alexa.

I gather Alexa monitors total online traffic? Didn’t we talk a long time ago that those fan numbers online refer to registered fans online? Then they wouldn’t show the unregistered visitors?

I honestly don’t know; I’m asking if someone knows. But that could explain the difference.

  • lucy

That begs to the question of why the hell wasn’t Susan invited if she is going to be the greatest seller in the world this Christmas season. You’d think that since so much is determined by who sells what SuBo would have been high on the list of AMA performers.

Because they didn’t think an American pop audience would be even slightly interested in stayiing tuned through a Susan performance?

  • Ladyguard

Unfortunately, since she posts this crap on AO, there are people who believe what she is yelling about. If she really has LEGITIMATE proof, she should be going to the FCC and whatever other governmental agencies would be involved with this sort of ‘fraud’ ‘” not yelling about it on the internet.

Since you brought it up…there is a reason this isn’t going away.

So, basically music sales are down 26% total from two years ago?? David’s year was 13% down from 2007 and kris’s year is another 13% down from David’s year?? Wow, knew sales had declined, but not by that much! Damn, that makes what Cook did even more amazing! Wonder how his next Cd will do?

  • leome

As people have said, AO is not very popular among Adam fans.

I think AO’s forum has more traffic than any other official idol site forym, so I’m not sure about it not being popular among Adam fans.
Speaking of that, is it me of Kris’ site doesn’t show the number of people watching it anymore? Those were always some low numbers, maybe it is better to hide them.
I actually like the new look. I can’t wait for them to change DCook’s picture, but maybe it will only happen when he releases a new single or album.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ CindyM

As this makes clear, the fact that the recession had started in December 2007 was acknowledged on November 28, 2008, 11 days after DC released his CD and 18 days after Archie released his CD.

There has been a debate as to whether the recession has ended, with some saying that it ended as of July/August of 2009, while others dispute that. The NBER will issue something on that in 2010.

Yes, and there is always a lag time between the offiical recovery and what people actually feel. There is also a lag time of when experts say a recession started and when it actually impacts the average Joe and Jane’s life. IMHO, from my personal experience on how the recession impacted myself and others I know, things went south last fall/early winter. Things are starting to improve a bit now and we are all cautiously optimistic. The difference from today and a year ago? We all have alot more credit card debt because of lay offs, no raises, and increase in costs, such as health care.

Most of this including the tour has only been recognized in the idol bubble. The photo shots and articles are for me part of the celebrity thing.

I mostly blame the labels for letting Adam and Kris stay without visible music all summer long.
I even would blame the not so impressive fan bases of the top idols this year, on the shows shenanigans from the start and that the judges seems more important than the contestant.

But I also expect celebrities to be people, who have accomplished something and for that reason I would have liked if Adam would not have market this way in the first place.

  • universal

I actually deleted that sentence from my post… What I was trying to say was that many people don’t feel into the site enough to register as a member. They may visit the site often but if they are not registered, do their visits show in the number many people have referred to here?

Percentage-wise, the decline this year may be similar to the decline last year, but that is on TOP of the decline last year. In other words, this year, the week you refer to is 40% down from the same week 2 years ago. (For example, if this week last year had sales of 400 units, then that means this year had sales of 316, and 2 years ago had sales of 525 or so, so from 2 years ago to this year, the week’s sales went from 525 all the way down to 316.)

Someone said that Adam would sell 5 million albums in 1 year?

Neither Kelly nor Carrie sold 5 million albums in 1 year so I doubt that’s what the person meant. I think they were saying Adam would sell like a Carrie or Kelly instead of a Jordin or Taylor. and adjusting for today’s market collapse that’s probably in the range of 2 to 3 million max.

  • fadetowhite

This is why Adam’s sales should be huge.

All Idol winners and runners up have to deal with doing all that stuff and recording their album (in the case of Allen and Cook along with multiple co-writing sessions) and performances/ interviews etc, etc…

    They work them damn hard.

That’s why they all deserve some degree of success.

Truthiness: I’m referring to the place on Amazon.com where it says ‘frequently bought together’ – if you scroll down the page you’ll see it. Indicating, I would have thought, that people often buy both albums. And Boyle’s is the only album paired there with Lambert’s. I found it kind of ironic…

Re: numbers online at fansites. I wouldn’t give any credence whatsoever to relating this to the popularity of someone as a musical artist that sells. Carrie Underwood’s site has had about 300 – 350 people showing as online all day (I checked several idol sites when people were noting the unusually high numbers at DCO). It’s as relevant as twitter numbers when it comes to album sales.

One performance is not going to be the be all end all.

In regards to FYE’s radio play, some think it is (which it isn’t).

Yeah, I think some people are going to be dis-APPOINTED! (a la Kevin Kline’s character in A Fish Called Wanda) when that doesn’t happen *cough TfM cough* And especially because it seems that Whatya Want From Me is the one that is being pushed now. I think the idea that FYE might be revisted/revived later, is possible, but isn’t going to be the pushed single going forward, I bet. Beyond the AMAs, like all the other promotion that week, I do wonder if Adam will do WYWFM instead? Which won’t help in branding after the AMAs, but will if he’s pushing it with the radio promos he’s doing in NY, the GMAs, Ellen, Letterman(?) hmmm about that last one. Dunno. Sloppy roll out is sloppy and hard to predict what stupid thing they’ll do (or not as the case may be) next.

ontd_ai is made up mainly of fans of Adam, Kris or of Adam AND Kris (Kradam). There are fans of the other idols sprinkled in of course, but if you look at the thread topis that get the most comments (outside of the non-Idol related threads like the OT and anonymous one), they are pretty much all about what Adam is doing, what Kris is doing, or about various Kradam-y things. as far as I can tell, people get shot down if they say anything strongly against either Adam or Kris, although making lighthearted fun of them is fairly common

I don’t understand your conclusion that: “it doesn’t seem like music is being more affected than it was a year ago”

HDD is saying last weeks sales are 21% worse then when Cook was selling his album (comparing the same week) in 2008. So sales are worse this year than last…. about 20% worse (which is a lot)

  • FolkFan

As an FYI on the weekly comparisons from year-to-year: While I do think that you can take something on those HDD/Billboard year-to-date losses, comparing one week to another can be a big problem. The week in 2008 to which they were comparing last week was the week that Archie debuted, and a little CD called “Fearless.” Archie outsold last week’s top seller (Bon Jovi at 165K), and Fearless had a huge debut week of 592,304. There was a similar situation last year when people were panicking about a comparator week from 2007 that turned out to be an early Thanksgiving/Black Friday week.

  • fadetowhite

The funny thing about that Amazon thing is that if you scroll down further to the ‘also bought’ section, they don’t give any numbers in brackets after Boyle’s album, where they do for others and Lambert doesn’t pop up on Boyle’s page as a ‘frequently bought together’, which means that it’s probably a load of bs, but it made me laugh anyway…

There are alot of people on there who bought Archie’s Christmas album though, which is also a peculiar match, from my pov anyway.

well, Adamofficial.com currently ranks above MJ’s in terms of traffic rank in the US right now per Alexa.com.

Where do you get this? I just checked alexa

I get the following MJs ranks higher than DCO which ranks higher than ALO.

    MJs:
    Traffic Rank: 47,252
    Traffic Rank US: 12,434

    DCO:
    Traffic Rank: 152,733
    Traffic Rank US: 44,531

    ALO:
    Traffic Rank: 2,187,627

Incidentally the lower the number the better your rank. It is better to be #1 than #1,000,000

I just think this season was the meanest of all. I’ve said this before but there was the deliberate attempt at a culture clash between Danny and Adam, which created an even heavier fan war than normal because it brought in a whole set of personal beliefs. There was the thrashing of an obviously mentally ill Tatianna, the tearing apart of danny gokey online and in the press, the homophobes coming out of the woodwork against Adam, the misogyny on and off the show directed at Kara, the complete smashing of Lil, Anoop, and Matt’s confidence, and an anti-climactic finale where bitterness and paranoia were the overriding emotions, instead of joy and pride.

Ha. Maybe I see the glass half full. It was the first season a blind contestant made it all the way to the top ten. There was the relationship of Adam and Kris, something that captivated everyone for many different reasons. There was the save of Matt Giraud, with the diols all chanting “save” and then embracing him when it happened. There was the story of Adam leading the rest in demanding they sing the group numbers live. Mostly there was the obvious warmth that existed among the idols and their refusal to be pitted against each other as rivals. (And Tatiana? Just my opinion but I think that was acting.)

IMO no matter what the number is and if it is low he will never be a failure to me.

I think that’s actually one of the great things about Idol. Whether they go on to be Clarkson/Underwood/Daughtry or return to indie roots, these people pick up a hardcore of genuine fans, who love them for their singing/performance/music.

And even if it’s at a smaller indie level, that core group of fans will probably support them for a long time, if not for the whole of their professional career. And that means that, at some level or other, they can be making a living and connect with a group of people who want to hear them.

And I really do think you are worrying unnecessarily.

It is seriously inconceivable to me, that with that level of media support and high profile performances/interviews, coupled with a very strong, visual performance style, strong vocals and good, current songs, that Lambert will not do well, whatever his initial sales might be.

And I’m not saying that as someone who wants to build him high in the hopes that I can knock him when he fails to live up to it. I’m not a fan and I get pissed off at some of the media and ridiculously OTT, unproven hype, but I absolutely 100% believe that he will be a success.

I read that article about Kris and Adam being poseurs and it just cracked me up. I love how critics expect that new artists are going to reinvent music and create this totally new sound that is unlike anything else on the radio. It’s like, hello? What band does NOT sound like another? Why would Amazon.com have “recommended for you” sections for when you buy one band’s CD and they think you should get this other band’s CD because they sound the same?

The Kris part was particularly hilarious because they compare him to Incubus, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5 and Gavin DeGraw, all four sound NOTHING alike, so which is it? He’s ripping off not ONE but FOUR artists! OMG! What a pretentious article.

  • Bowie1

They just played WYWFM on Y98.1 here in St. Louis. The DJ said, Adam’s album FYE is coming out on Monday, Nov. 23rd!! I’ve requested both of them on Y98 and Z107.7 several times. Wish they were in the hourly spin cycle….maybe after the AMA’s! (Keeping fingers crossed)

Does anyone know if there are any other radio stations here in St. Louis playing Adam’s music? I’m not a fan of alot of the music played on these two radio stations….what I do to hear Adam on the RA-D-IO!!

  • leome

I don’t understand your conclusion that: ‘it doesn’t seem like music is being more affected than it was a year ago’

HDD is saying last weeks sales are 21% worse then when Cook was selling his album (comparing the same week) in 2008. So sales are worse this year than last’ ¦. about 20% worse (which is a lot)

Well, for one, if this year is down 21% compared to the same week the year before, Cook’s year it was down 24%, so that’s actually worst in terms of decrease for Cook’s week.
Also I think the year in general matters the most than week to week sales. Week to week depends on how many big albums are released that week. Cook’s week, was his album, plus Beyonce and Nickelback (plus Il Divo that I can remember), so it was a big week, cause those acts are huge and had a lot of airplay at that point (they still do).
This year there’s John Mayer and Norah. Acts that sell a lot too, but they really don’t have the same airplay as Beyonce or Nickelback and I’m sure that affects the sales for Norah (or even Leona)
Regardless, we were comparing top 2s. And if we compare sales, the drop of this year’s top two is bigger than those general music numbers, no matter if you pick the 13% or the 20%.

ETA: And in an economic aspect, this year is going down at the same rate as last year, not more, like some may imply.

I don’t know which site has more people, but this was just posted at Adamofficial.

Adding private messaging to the site is a major priority for us, actually (we’d love nothing more than for you guys to wash your dirty laundry in private so we have less to moderate!), but we’ve had to hold off on launching it because of server space…we need more of it! AO has the highest fan engagement/participation of ANY Sony Music artist website (even more than Michael Jackson’s – congratulations!), and if you guys start private messaging each other as much as we think you will, we’re going to run out of server memory quick. That’s the reason for the hold-up.

How many registered fans are there in each of the sites?

Answering my own question, if I haven’t messed up on the calculations –
    AO – 35353 (1251 fans online) – 3.5% of fans are online
    DCO – 24279 (4635 fans online) – 19% of fans are online

If AO really that unpopular compared to DCO? The DCO number still looks odd to me though, I don’t see why such a high percentage of fans should be online at any one time there. At the moment the numbers simply don’t make sense, whether the sites count only registered fans or not.

I am trying very hard to not worry too much about the 1st weeks album sales for either Kris or Adam. I’m failing’ ¦but I’m trying!

I know it doesn’t seem like it, but I am trying not to worry about it as well. Really, this is me NOT worrying. You have no idea what a nervous wreck I was last year over the elections, because that is something that actually mattered.

Anyhew, didn’t Billboard say that sales of music overall are 30% lower than they were least year? Or am I somehow high from drugs I haven’t taken?

There have been MULTIPLE times that AO went up to 3 or 4 thousand for no reason. The members figured it was just a glitch that occurred from time to time. However, it does go up significantly and rightly so when AO sends out an email of a new video or news.

So now we’re going to debate how many people are on the official fan sites? Jeeeezzz. This constant comparison is getting old.

  • Trina

Neither Kelly nor Carrie sold 5 million albums in 1 year so I doubt that’s what the person meant. I think they were saying Adam would sell like a Carrie or Kelly instead of a Jordin or Taylor. and adjusting for today’s market collapse that’s probably in the range of 2 to 3 million max.

    This was the original quote:

but I will bet my house that he will outsell Jordin, Kris, both Davids, Taylor, Daughtry, and he will come very close to Kelly and Carrie by this time next year.

Even taking Kelly and Carrie out of the equation, this time next year = 1 year, right? By saying he’ll outsell Daughtry this time next year I would imagine that has to mean the total Daughtry has sold.

The DCO amount of fans online ALWAYS looks off to me. Especially when you look at where the site is ranked on that traffic site. I can understand a spike in people when official announcements are posted or something big is happening, but why were there randomly 5,000 fans online today? Or 2500 sometimes in the middle of the night? I’ve always suspected a glitch.

  • koshka

Truthiness…I do think that things could have rolled out better… but the reality is.. that FYE is a MUCH better performance song than WWFM for the AMAs. With that said, WWFM is easier to listen to and more appropriate for daytime tv. If I had this decision to make AMA song vs First Single, I’m not sure I could think of a better solution. The roll out to radio sucks wind as far as I am concerned. I have a branding and marketing background, the single selection/performance situation is not ideal, but I don’t think I will cause any harm in the long run.

The Alexa rank for AdamOfficial is – past 90 days is: #10,998 US, #50,028 Worldwide
    Link: http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/Adamofficial.com

The above ranks are correct for MJs and DCO.

Also — the #2 keyword used to get to AmericanIdol.com is “Adam Lambert” after “American Idol”.

To count as a Billboard or RIAA sale unit, the item must be sold for at least 50% of the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. Promotional sales do not count.

‘Mail’ distributed hard copy albums, like from a fan site or Amazon or Barnes and Nobel account for about 15% (usually) of all album sales.

The percentage of delivered CD’s is now around 20% of sales — Amazon CD deliveries average around 10% of total music sales for Q4 2009.

    Amazon is 5% of sales.

For the first half of 2009 Amazon was 12% of total music sales — 14% of CD sales, and 9% of digital sales. Amazon’s market share is increasing, while the total music business is shrinking.

Finally, music sales revenue in the US are currently DOWN 21% vs. last year. It is the economy and illegal downloads and free music, but it is down substantially. And sales do not look like with will stop dropping. Musical artists who depend on record sales are hurting, artist with strong concert sales are doing fine.

Musical artists who depend on record sales are hurting, artist with strong concert sales are doing fine.

Surely that’s why some huge arena selling concert acts have taken to giving some of their new music away free: they know where the money lies. It makes it very hard for a new act.

It makes me hopeful for Cook in one way, because his concert sales and albums have started off well (edit: though of course, I’m in no way comparing him to huge acts; I just mean solid results for a newbie)although it does worry me that he hasn’t broadened his fanbase enough. Still time (and the second album release) will tell.

But it does triple underline just how well Carrie Underwood has done with her latest album.

  • Truthiness

I just saw a commercial for the Susan Boyle CD: ‘The Wait is Over’ .

I’m telling ya, that woman is going to have monster sales. And yes like many have said, people will buying as stocking stuffers and for their relatives, in the mistaken belief they are doing them a favour by doing so.

Cook always strikes me as someone who owns the stage when he performs. I’ve never seen him live, still I can see it in YT clips. Good performers have a presence’ ¦ he has it. I didn’t much care for his first album, but I’m looking forward to hearing his next now that he has had some time (and distance) from the AI machine.

I totally agree. I really want to see him with some material I can enjoy, because I like him and would especially love to see him rocking it out live. Hopefully he won’t be like Daughtry with his second album, which is way too similiar to the first which I also disliked. I know that commercially Daughtry did well with his second, so Cook would be lucky to replicate that, but I would like more from Cook artistically. And yeah, I think he’s more capable of that then Daughtry is, for whatever reason.

  • Q3

Well, for one, if this year is down 21% compared to the same week the year before, Cook’s year it was down 24%, so that’s actually worst in terms of decrease for Cook’s week.

    Music sales for Q4 2008 was down 9% vs. Q4 2009.

David Cook and Archie’s album were on preorder before the recession started and both had a lot of units in the bank.

I will go on the record with two predictions: 1. FYE album will not sell as many units in the first week as either Cook or Archie. 2. By 12/01/10 [after 1 year of sales] worldwide sales of FYE album will be greater then “David Cook” album total sales.

Also, it appears that FYE was selected as a single because it was the best performance number [watch Adam's AMA interview when he talks about why he picked that single].

There appears to be an unusual single, and incomparable, release strategy underway.

    1. FYE CD has a sticker on it that says: includes “for You Entertainment”, “What Do You Want From Me”, “Music Adam” and “Winners”.

    2. Adam said that the Sam Sparro track, “Voodoo”, would be available online.

    3. Neil Lambert referred to “VooDoo” and “Can’t let you go” as “singles to come”.

    Here are the tweets:

“JanusAquarius: @negativeneil Does this Last FM account belong to you? http://bit.ly/2Tv97Z Or is that another NegativeNeil impostor? “Enward” in Antigua???”

“negativeneil Negativeneil last.fm belongs to me. I won’t be accepting invites from anyone though”

“briarswt: @negativeneil have u heard the bonus tracks u list there?”

“negativeneil @briarswt I’ve heard it all. The singles to come are epic.”

My conclusion: Something different is going on with Adam’s single strategy. The release of WWFM was not an accident or based on a last minute strategy change — it is on the CD sticker.

Adam has 3 singles released now — all with a different strategic purpose. T4M [to promo 2012], FYE [AMA performance], and WWFM [may be the real radio single for US Top 40]. I think that they may release “Music Again” and/or “Winners” as a rock single [also named on the CD sticker]. Finally, Neil’s tweets indicate that the two new track names are for singles.

Do not underestimate Adam, Sony/RCS or 19 on this one — there is a bigger plan than we know about, and it is not a “build it as they go strategy”. The is a Master Plan. [I couldn't resist!]

David Cook got a really good review from his Canada concert. This reviewer also attended Daughtry’s concert earlier and has a link to that review on this page.
    http://www.thescreamingmeanie.com/2009/11/another-screaming-review-david-cook.html

That dude is hilarious. This might be my favorite Cook review quote ever:
Besides, I really like the mood that the Future Mrs. Meanie is in after seeing him live – makes it a good night for me!! Heh heh. Thanks Mr. Cook – I owe you one brother!

  • fadetowhite

I certainly think that Adam is going to be outstanding live: that theatrical experience is going to stand him in very good stead and he undoubtedly takes over the stage.

As I said earlier – fan or not – I just cannot conceive of a situation in which he is not going to do well long term. He has all the skills and media love that propell people like Lady Gaga, or any big pop/dance performer, to the top.

As for Cook, I’m glad that he is gradually establishing himself as a great live act and that news of this seems to be, very slowly, seeping into live reviews of his concerts.

And I certainly hope that album two sees him sticking more strongly to his own musical sensibilities (no more Come Back To Mes please) and that he is given a more open minded reception by the music press. But I’m not holding my breath for the latter.

‘New Moon’ Shatters Records In The Saturday Box Office Report

The second “Twilight” installment has already shattered records and expectations by earning $26.3 million from midnight showings alone, decimating the record previously held by “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Additionally, “New Moon” enjoyed the single most lucrative opening day in the history of cinema with $62.2 million, a record previously held by “The Dark Knight.” Combined with the midnight intake, “New Moon” has already earned $72.7 million ‘” and the weekend isn’t even over.

    Q3

Adam’s sales are almost guarenteed to exceed Cook’s worldwide, because, based on that billboard interview, he’s actually going to be publicised worldwide.

Cook has received zero publicity outside the US: indeed it was pretty hard to get hold of his album for weeks, if not months, post release in the UK.

Nobody knows who he is and (unless they just happened to be huge, hardcore fans from AI, which is unlikely in a country like the UK, where it has a tiny audience) are highly unlikely to have heard his music, unless they live in the Phillipines (Cookland central!).

Now, that doesn’t mean that Lambert wouldn’t outsell him worldwide anyway: his music is far more in the Black Eyed Peas/ Lady Gaga bracket that does well everywhere and transcends music borders. Edit: and he does seem to have good established fanbases in several countries where AI has a larger audience – I have no idea whether Cook did or not, but I certainly suspect not as much.

I’m just saying that to compare music sales of someone who’s album has received major publicity around the world, with someone who’s album has received none, is as reasonable as comparing an Idol runner up or winner’s album sales in 2009 (or 2008 for that matter) to those of several years ago, before the music industry was hit by downloads and the recession.

In fact, I think it’s even less of a fair comparison, because at least all the Idols got a similar amount of TV exposure in the US, so some people know who they are and that they have albums in the first place :lol.

  • fadetowhite

    PS:

Q3 – not venting at you there – or at Lambert.

Cook’s total absence of label/management support outside the US is actually one of my major peeves.

Some will say that they don’t think his music would do well outside the US (though the Phillipines would suggest otherwise), but as a UK resident, who keeps abreast of the UK market, I do think he could have had some success here potentially and he wasn’t even given the chance.

  • Kirsten

There appears to be an unusual single, and incomparable, release strategy underway.

No, it’s really not all that unique. It ends up being used quite frequently. The technical industry term for this strategy is “flopping”.

There is NO way I’ll believe that they sent the song for adds three weeks before album release and then spiked it so that the week before the album is released, it is 872nd in overall spins and it’s actually losing spins. What is the logic behind that? What could possibly be wrong with people hearing it on the radio? If for some bizarro reason they didn’t want people to hear it on the radio, then don’t release it or at least don’t send it for adds. If somehow this is their official strategy, they need to cut down on their booze and blow budget.

  • koshka

As for Cook, I’m glad that he is gradually establishing himself as a great live act and that news of this seems to be, very slowly, seeping into live reviews of his concerts.

Hope Allison will benefit from this.

    Me too!

I thought her acoustic performance the other day was outstanding.

  • Tess

Correct me if I am wrong but hasn’t it been the consensus from many posting here that a “single” success is required for album success and that radio play is the only thing that gets a single heard.

Just want to make sure….because there sure are a lot of good selling albums on I-tunes that have no single in conjunction with them.

  • Kirsten

LOL, sick in bed reading Soap Opera Digest of my mom’s. Mention of Adam in the magazine. Question asked about James Franco appearance and “that haunting song, ‘Mad World’ sung by American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert”.

Answer: As far as Franco’s theme music, the song was chosen by GH Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps. She was listening to a cd her daughter made for her on the way to work and knew it was the perfect song when she heard it. We’re very lucky to have an executive producer who knows how important music is to the show. The song definitely sets the right mood and tone for the story.”

They are playing the heck out of it on the show, Friday there were ate least 5 times they played part of the song, ended the show with a long snippet of the chorus. NGL, it is weird to see James Franco on a soap!

Kirsten From what I’ve seen they didn’t push T4M at all and barely pushed FYE. I expect RCA to bulldoze WWFM… I wouldn’t be surprised if Music Again or Winners went to adds by Feb.

ETA: as far as I know T4M never went to adds.

  • alaadam

I think the only reason they put FYE on the radio was to hold over the hard core fans and to cool the discussion that week about the album cover. I also think they planned to release WWFM (as we heard from rumors) but then the AMA opportunity came up and they knew WWFM was not a ‘performance” song-Alas, FYE. But, apparently, they have PLANNED the entire ADAM LAMBERT rollout for after the AMA’s once it got booked. If the strategy changed, the performance opportunity changed it. Nothing more. They are marketing the Adam Lambert Brand which includes all the other stuff he does. i don’t think they are watching the charts like bloggers. I agree-it is a MASTER PLAN!

  • Kirsten

Correct me if I am wrong but hasn’t it been the consensus from many posting here that a ‘single’ success is required for album success and that radio play is the only thing that gets a single heard.

No, I don’t believe that is the consensus at all. A single can help sell an album. There are some artists that don’t need singles. Granted that tends to happen for more established or AC artists.

Radio play is not the only thing that gets a single heard. It’s just one of the more common ways. Having your song featured on a popular show helps. Heck, having your song featured on an iTunes commercial is like getting a license to print money. Some artists gain exposure on youtube or myspace. There are lots of different avenues.

  • JulesJules

Did we hear any more about whether ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ was written for the new movie ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and that being a movie theme tune like TFM, it had to be released as a bonus track?

I remember reading something but I can’t remember exactly what.

  • aa618892

Tess-Just want to make sure’ ¦.because there sure are a lot of good selling albums on I-tunes that have no single in conjunction with them.

Tess- Thank you for bringing this up. I see such an obsession on these blogs about radio spins and single sales and yet I also see albums selling without attached singles. I also see singles that are selling but the albums are not. I for one just don’t listen to the radio much and neither do my daughters. They find out about music through the internet or word of mouth not the radio.

  • bridgeymah

I’m telling ya, that woman is going to have monster sales. And yes like many have said, people will buying as stocking stuffers and for their relatives, in the mistaken belief they are doing them a favour by doing so.

I think SuBo will have great opening numbers, but unless the word of mouth supports it (which by all accounts it won’t) her sales will die off really fast. Multi platinum albums aren’t made on opening sales but on long haul performance and good reviews and good word of mouth is critical for that to happen (just like movies)… I think Adam’s potential for longer-term strong sales is far better.

  • saga

I am going to wait till the promo for the single has started before calling it a flop or not.

Why would anyone even care about a counter on a fan website and whether it’s working or not?

Just to have an idea about the sales for the first couple days, I would guess.

  • Tess

Maybe the year seems weird because they have a second place idol that is weird and all of the previous AI stategies aren’t the right box shape for him. I mean, how many times has their been an idol come off the show that can sing and more importantly be heard in several different genres. And when has their been an Idol that has recorded a movie soundtrack song before they recorded their own album. Or when has as idol been invited to perform one of 17 performances on a show that is geared to celebrating the best in current popular music before they have released an album.

Or when has an idol just coming off of the show been a media darling and been alluded to by AI fandom as the guy who is more celebrity than substance.

This isn’t every year and obviously Adam is not a carbon copy of Idols who have gone before. His stuff may not sell at the same up front pace as former idols and he may not have overall sales…but somebody somewhere sure thinks that the Man has sticking power in the industry or he wouldn’t be the first Idol to be marketed Internationally at the same time they are marketing him in the US.

I just don’t think that antiquated AI thinking is going to work with Adam, and that what went down in the past just may not be what is going down now. IMMV.

  • didilynn

I can’t speculate on on the strategy that RCA/19 is using with Adam because I’m not in marketing, but I will say:

Adam’s sound is a little different from what’s on the radio – the songs have elements of what is popular, but also different in a way. Might take a while to catch on, if it does catch, which I hope it does, because I think it’s great – takes what I like about pop but makes it more interesting.

They and Adam know that a lot of his new music is a little different than what he sang on Idol. A lot of reviewers (and fans) were expecting or hoping for either 1) pure rock or 2) pure ballads or some combination thereof (because that is what they loved from Adam or love in general (Ann Powers case in point). These people obviously not only didn’t listen to what Adam wrote before Idol, but didn’t notice who he tweeted his favorites were (Muse, Lady GaGa, etc.) and haven’t listened to him stating in many interviews what type of sound he is going for.

Tik Tok is a catchy (dancey type) song and Adam loved it – he tweeted about it back in August but it took a couple months to catch on – look at it now.

His first album may not be groundbreaking (although it is in many ways for me), and perhaps played it a bit “safe” but I feel this is the best marketing strategy for him right now. I think he stayed true to his vision, while mixing in some more “radio friendly” tunes to get his name out there and into the public consciousness. Some tunes are edgy enough to give him cred for bringing something a little new.

Like others have mentioned, I think the strange roll-out is totally to do with the AMA’s – FYE is a better live performance song than WWFM which may have been the 1st radio single if not for the AMA’s. One of Adam’s strengths is live performing, so picking a song he could do well live (with costumes, pyro, etc.) is important.

Some of my friends have accused me of being so biased towards Adam that I would like anything he came out with – NOT TRUE. I listened to the Take One songs, and only bought one song. I love the FYE album and his first song, Music Again, describes my feelings exactly – the album makes me want to listen to new Music Again – I was stuck in a rut of oldies before. So I am happy.

  • Keel

Correct me if I am wrong but hasn’t it been the consensus from many posting here that a ‘single’ success is required for album success and that radio play is the only thing that gets a single heard.

Tess, I think that for new artists, a successful single is very important in order to drive album success. But I certainly don’t think that radio play is the only thing that gets a single heard. Why else would Billboard take streaming into account in the Hot 100 if radio play was the only thing that would get a single heard. However, I would probably go a step further and say that radio play is the #1 way that gets a single heard by a lot of potential new fans. I’m not saying this is not changing, but radio play is still huge in getting singles heard.

  • Q3

Q3: Adam has 3 singles released now ‘” all with a different strategic purpose. T4M [to promo 2012], FYE [AMA performance], and WWFM [may be the real radio single for US Top 40]. I think that they may release ‘Music Again’ and/or ‘Winners’ as a rock single [also named on the CD sticker].

Kristen: They are going to push four singles at once? With no radio track record? That’s unheard of. I don’t even know what to say.

Seriously, this is the weirdest year ever.

I don’t think that they will be pushing 4 singles at once, but I think that they appear to be planning to release 5 singles — 3 already released. And I agree, it is the weirdest year ever.

I have decided to suspend all logic and just enjoy the music.

I think Adam’s potential for longer-term strong sales is far better.

bridgeymah-I have been trying to say this for weeks. And there is a bigger picture for sure. RCA knows what they have got in Adam. Also his album is very, very strong and I believe it will take time but as people are exposed to Adam the performer-because he is a fantastic performer-the music sales will follow. I got my CD today and picturing Adam performing any of these songs live, Holy Moses- he is just going to kill there. RCA is very smart to launch him in a visual way- Master Plan!

“Funny ‘“ I enjoyed the season more than any of the others I watched (S3 ‘“ S7). I thought Adam brought much needed originality & excitement. What I didn’t like was the 4 judges and unfortunately that mistake lives on this year

gangreen29, well said and excellant observations!

What artists are you talking about? Some indie artists can chart on itunes because it really doesn’t take too many sales to be in the top 100, from 50 on were talking like 1,000 cds. These artists can sell by word of mouth, but they don’t have the millions of dollars of publicity that Adam has. The other types of artists on there not getting radio play are the old dinosaurs like Paul McCartney, who are still selling on name but certainly built there career on the radio. Since Adam is neither an indie artist or a dinosaur he needs radio.

By 12/01/10 [after 1 year of sales] worldwide sales of FYE album will be greater then ‘David Cook’ album total sales.

I think that’s a little bold. I would say from 600-800. Cook has what 1.4 million sold? I think that Adam would have to be pretty popular to match that. I actually feel bad for Adam, with all the hype and exposure he’s getting, if his album doesn’t sell more then 175 k it will be considered a failure(yes I know it’s ridiculous to come up with a number on whats failure mkay?) I know that Jordan and Kris sold less then 175 k (:( in that itself) but neither of them had anywhere near as much pimping as Adam did. I hope/think he can sell that much though.

I just listened to his album on youtube and it’s way better then I expected(though my expectations weren’t that high)

songs I’d buy and but on my ipod:
For your entertainment: yes it sounds like a britney song, but Britney’s has sold over 85 million albums worldwide, not bad to be compared to her IMO.
sleepwalker: yes it sounds painfully identical to every one republic song, but not one one republic song has the vocal power and emotion Adam displays
Whata want from me: good melody:check, great vocal: check, no more explanation needed.
sure fire winner’s: I hated the clip but I thought the full song was so laughably bad that it was good. :)

songs that I might buy but would be nowhere near my top played all have the same review: didn’t dislike it but I can’t remember it an hour later

    soaked
    aftermath
    broken open
    pick u up
    A loaded smile

songs I though were just terrible:

fever: I thought he sounded really creepy
music again: to qoute from the site topidol “starts off as the perfect montage theme for an 80s movie with an athletic bent (see American Flyers or anything made before 1987 involving skiing.) before descending into The Darkness-at-a-roller-rink. Yeah. The song is super gay, like in an 80s not homosexual way. Like when you called people GAYWAD. This song is a GAYWAD of a song. It makes me want to put on a leotard, sweatband and pop in a Jane Fonda aerobics tape into my brand-new VHS machine that cost $500. Or I could just go drop a couple bills at American Apparel.”
strut: almost so bad it’s good but just bad.

overall grade, idol debut: B/B+, average debut: B, with all the hype that surrounded it: c-

I am going to wait till the promo for the single has started before calling it a flop or not.

According to HDD a few weeks ago, RCA had plans to work the single to radio the following week. HDD is an industry outlet. Either RCA lied to HDD (why would they do that?), HDD lied in their article (why would they risk their credibility like that?) or the strategy changed from week to the next (after the AMA was announced). Or they did try to push the single, but you can’t push a rope.

I see such an obsession on these blogs about radio spins and single sales and yet I also see albums selling without attached singles.

We currently obsess about those things because they are the only concrete metrics we have. Once album sales start coming in, we’ll obsess about those.

Maybe the year seems weird because they have a second place idol that is weird and all of the previous AI stategies aren’t the right box shape for him.

I’m not even talking AI strategies. Please show many any artist in the music business who has singles sent for adds and the label plans for them to have a peak in the 60s on their primary chart and be losing spins the week the album is released.

There is nothing wrong with having a flop debut single. It happens all the time. It doesn’t even mean that it’s a bad single. It just didn’t work. There is no super-stealth strategy at work. Sure, a miracle may occur and FYE may blow the roof off of the AMAs and become a hit, but I’ll never believe that RCA had the strategy that FYE was bogged down on radio at this point.

The good sign is that RCA is in for the long-haul and they are willing to support him fully and give him additional singles. So, no worries.

  • aa618892

I know I mentioned some of this earlier but I played my new FYE cd and my daughter was literally drawn out of her room by the pull of his voice and music. She was somewhat just tolerant of my Adam obsession before but she was stunned at how much she liked the music. She is 17 and has very eclectic taste. She said the slower songs are very much what she is into and she does not listen to radio and neither do most of her friends. They find music online. She actually asked for the CD to put into her collection. This is what I believe will happen with Adam to propel him forward, high profile performances where he will kill it and word of mouth about some truly excellent music. Not the usual rollout but nothing about Adam is “usual”, IMO.

I still have no idea why they would wait for after the release of an album to really start radio promo (as in pushing for FYE). I can’t see any logical reason because, imo, there isn’t any. I can only imagine they were actually thinking it would be added for every station like he’s Britney Spears or something.

I’m not going to do your homework for you. There are albums from mainline record labels that do not have a current released single included on I-tunes. And these albums seem to be selling and I bet next week when I check Billboards 200 they will be charting.

I think sometimes stereotypical references get dragged up time and time again…and I really think that radio play (though great and beneficial for many many artists) is not the be all and end all that it has been in the past.

I’m sure there are marketing analysis that will back me up that reflects that there are many additional forms of media that gets a song (album) out there for people to hear.

  • adamized

I agree with aa618892 that Adam will grow in popularity as people hear him in maybe not so traditional ways. I think the multi-single approach is being done on purpose to draw folks into his entire span of music. If you recall he sold more albums from AI than singles. Maybe people want it ALL and aren’t going to download just one single. I know that I do!

Am making the trip to NY to see his GMA performance. Wish me luck! I would love to know how early I should get in line.

Adam has 3 singles released now ‘” all with a different strategic purpose. T4M [to promo 2012], FYE [AMA performance], and WWFM [may be the real radio single for US Top 40]. I think that they may release ‘Music Again’ and/or ‘Winners’ as a rock single [also named on the CD sticker]. Finally, Neil’s tweets indicate that the two new track names are for singles.

Ah. This makes sense now. So RCA sent FYE for radio adds by mistake. And they just forgot to send WWFM for radio adds. It is not that a big deal. It is not like releasing a song to radio requires a lot of planning and includes million details.

Also I keep hearing about UK release. Do they release any singles there ? Usually they do release singles, but for Adam they might not.

Tess, you brought it up! Name some of these mainstream artists charting on itunes that do not get radio play. Just to clarify my earlier comments, when I hinged my estimate on the reception of the AMA performance, I was only speaking of the impact on FIRST WEEK sales. Obviously any sales after the first week will be subject to whatever other promo follows, as well as radio play that is or is not happening. I guess some people felt I was saying his whole career hinged on the AMAs, which is not what I stated. Because AMAs occur the day before he releases, it can have a really material impact for that week. If it is really spectacularly good or bad, it can impact later weeks, too, along with all other factors.

I gather Alexa monitors total online traffic? Didn’t we talk a long time ago that those fan numbers online refer to registered fans online? Then they wouldn’t show the unregistered visitors?

I honestly don’t know; I’m asking if someone knows. But that could explain the difference.

Sorry if somebody already answered this, but Alexa ratings only count users who have downloaded the Alexa toolbar onto their browser.

There is some controversy over how representative Alexa’s user base is of typical Internet behavior. If Alexa’s user base is a fair statistical sample of the Internet user population (e.g., a random sample of sufficient size), Alexa’s ranking should be quite accurate. In reality, not much is known about the sample and possible sampling biases. Alexa itself notes several examples.[13] A known source of bias is the self-selecting, opt-in nature of Alexa traffic tracking software installation, but the significance of this bias on rankings is not reported.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_ratings#Accuracy_of_ranking_by_the_Alexa_Toolbar

Most bloggers and others I’ve spoken to don’t have a very high opinion of their accuracy or uselfulness.

    2) FYE premieres on KIIS –> OMG best single ever –> adds, radio play slow start –> 18k first week sales –> negative radio spins on the eve of album drop –> nvm, wasn’t the real single.

    One more time….

There are albums selling on I-tunes (which I know have or will have very good sales for the week) and there is no, nada, nein, singles listed on I tunes that match up with the album. Now, I have been told that singles are released to radio and radio spins are what makes buyers purchase singles and or albums.

Now if I correlate that through my little tiny brain…that means if a song is released to radio a single will probably also be released for sale. And I don’t know where you can buy “singles” except for Itunes and maybe Amazon MP3s. Therefore, I am surmising that if albums are selling and selling well they should have a released single that is playing on the radio.

But funny thing is I can’t find any “singles” (that are labeled as singles and not singles off of an album) for sale. And if there isn’t a single then the song probably isn’t currently being played on the radio. Fair. But the album is still selling. So that means radio spins aren’t driving the sale of the album.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

  • Jolene

Does anyone really believe FYE wasn’t a real single? It had an add date, it got a video, doesn’t get much more “real single” than that. The fact that it didn’t do well (so far) doesn’t mean we can ignore its existence or rewrite its purpose…

  • gabilan

Most people have tempered their expectations. Your post cherry picked the few that didn’t.

  • kittensmittens

Eileen- some of us suspect that RCA’s support of Adam (amazing collaborators, solid album material, pimp spot at AMA’s…) indicates that the info they are privy to but we aren’t suggest he will sell well, such as presales.

  • googletot

I don’t know anybody that’s buying or even know who is Adam Lambert except for those who watch AI. I’ve asked a number of people in a group that I’m in, know they don’t watch AI and not one of them responded that they would buy his CD. It will be interesting to see how his sales are after the first week.

  • gangreen29

Am I missing a step somewhere?

    Yeah, examples.

  • weareallinnocent

Most people have tempered their expectations. Your post cherry picked the few that didn’t.

Um, yeah, that. Most people thinking about first week sales, based on available data, are predicting sales much lower than both Davids last year. And, this commentary is based on my reading of this thread.

  • Tess

I think everything that is being bantered about the single is based on individual semantics. def: ‘ ¢in the study of language, semantics is concerned with the meaning of words, expressions and sentences, often in relation to reference and truth. …

Yes FYE was released as a single, yes a video was made, yes it hasn’t done well on radio all truisms. Now the semantics come into play. Was it released by mistake, was it released on a trial basis to get some airplay prior to the AMAs and to get it playing “onDemand” where it could be listened to, is it out in radio land with hopes that if it does well on the AMAs, radio will begin spinning it without RCA having to go through the process of convincing stations to spin it…its there just hovering.

Has RCA also decided to release another single that is a bit more user friendly and can move easily between top 40 and HAC? Has it gone to formal ads yet…or is it also hovering to see how the AMAs and the album does. And is all of this done just to increase eventual sales for an album that RCA thinks is really good.

And TfM is a horse of a totally different color and it’s history is too long and boring to repeat for the gazillion and 61st time.

I don’t have any definitive answers….does someone else. It seems to me that it is all speculation, by most everyone, at this point. Or am I being to pedantic, again?

  • sanduskyday

Thank you gangreen29. I was just going to ask for examples. Once we have examples we can put this argument to rest.

  • Eileen99

“And, this commentary is based on my reading of this thread.”

I must be reading a different threat, LOL. My examples are from today’s thread, which made it even more mind-boggling to me. Are those people not paying attention to actual results? Even the digital downloads since the finale show Kris & Adam essentially the same, with Kris about 100k ahead, and even after Kris’ HDD prediction of 85-90k this week, folks are still making predictions that seem out of touch.

  • weareallinnocent

FWIW, I personally predicted Adam’s (the runner up’s) sales to be lower than Kris’ (the winner’s) but with the current HDD predictions, I certainly hope not. :-(

Are they buying John Mayer’s CD, I would assume they know who he is. Or Rihanna, or Shakira, or the group from Glee, or how about the New Moon soundtrack, or did they buy Carrie’s CD or Daughtry’s.

    Did you ask?

  • jpfan

If Adam’s sales are worse than Kris’, RCA has just wasted a ton of $. Because the album, video, cost of AMA appearance (they’re paying for the dancers, etc) ain’t cheap.

  • will

Is there a better option out there besides Alexa?

    Nope. Sad, isn’t it?

ETA: I shouldn’t be so definitive, I’m no expert. I should just say none that I know of.

  • Squirrely

I didn’t get to see 2012 – it was sold out for the times I wanted see it :(

    I’ll try again next week.

On another note I listened to Subo snippets on Amazon. She has a beautiful voice, and even though her album does not interest me at all I can see why people would buy it.

Also as predicted Adam’s album is perfect for driving.

  • ozarka

Not to mention his outfits. He’s very high maintenance. Those outfits can’t be cheap.

  • Tess

Why does someone need examples. This is a universal question, not a question based on a single specific example. Are you saying that what I am saying just doesn’t happen. Alrighty then….that is the answer and I will just shake my head…because again the universal answer is that the consensus is that it doesn’t happen. In order to sell an album you have to have singles playing on the radio. That is the answer. OKie, dokie.

  • Squirrely

Anyone else think the picture book smells like amaretto?

OMFG! Yes it does! Haha- Adam’s picture book not only looks pretty it smells pretty! Thanks for pointing that out.

    OMG it does – LOL

  • Kanadie Bonttell

    Q3
Finally, Neil’s tweets indicate that the two new track names are for singles

Yeah he did…but I really think this was just the wrong lingo used by Neil….he probably should have used the word songs, cuts, or tracks….I think he used the word singles, but that did not mean actual “single” releases. Just my opinion.

  • Jolene

I’ll say this much – if I was unaware of how FYE and TFM sold (and of FYE’s lack of airplay so far), I would expect huge album sales based on nothing but hype and Adam’s level of exposure. There’s a distinct disconnect between the “superstar” buzz and the numbers so far. That might change when we move from singles to album, or it might not.

I guess those who hold on to high expectations manage to justify the low sales so far as circumstantial and temporary. Who know, they could be proven right come next wedday.

  • jpfan

I wonder how much of the AMA bill, 19 picks up. The set looks expensive as well. I’m guessing the AMA have a budget for each act but if you want extra, the label pays for it. It costs $. You can’t just go out there with a paino/guitar and hope to be remembered. Must have dancers, pyro, costumes, name in lights. Won’t be cheap.

  • Kanadie Bonttell

Anyone else think the picture book smells like amaretto?

I used to love those scratch & sniff christmas books…anyone remember those? LOL

  • Tess

OK you made me smell it…and it does.

  • weareallinnocent

In order to sell an album you have to have singles playing on the radio.

No, there are examples to the contrary, just not for new artists. (For me, Pink Floyd always comes to mind. :-) ) That said, the means for exposure have evolved and expanded, so in this day and age, I don’t believe that it cannot happen. But don’t expect people to predict (or expect) that it will. That won’t stop it from happening that way. It will simply make it surprising (aka “groundbreaking”) when it does. :-)

ETA: Flo Rida, Kanye, Katy, and GaGa showed up on AI this year for a reason, whereas I believe they’d probably have scoffed at the notion a few years back. The market, it is a changin’… and TV (even reality TV) sells music these days. And, everybody knows it.

  • lucy

I’m not sure this was posted before, it’s a Q&A with Fantasia. The interesting news is that she says she’ll be releasing a single in January and the album in March

Cool. Thanks for posting this. I’m ready for some new Fantasia music!

Also happy to hear that she’s pursuing her GED and hopes to complete some college. Sounds like she’s really working hard to get her entire act together. Very good to hear!

  • ozarka

David Archuleta is in the November issue of M magazine. There’s a picture of Allison and Adam in it as well. Apparently, the magazine did a poll that asked, “Whose new CD are you looking forward to the most?” Before you all get worked up by the poll results, just know that this is a teen magazine…

    65% David Archuleta
    20% Allison Iraheta
    15% Adam Lambert

    Scan 1
    Scan 2
    Scan 3

It’s nice to see David getting some extraneous promo for his Christmas CD. Speaking of which, he was at a bookstore today doing a CD signing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAuDgomNXIc

LOL ozarka, I was going to double post “thanks for the info”

ETA: and now my post makes no sense since you deleted yours!

  • will

Could somebody explain what the Allison tie-in with New Moon is? This is the first I’ve heard of it.

  • lucy

Could someone logically explain to me given #1 & #2 above, why people are still making wild sales predictions for the FYE the album? I’m hearing 180k, 200k, 300k, exceed David Cook a year from now, all in a bad economy.

Psssst…. Watching American idol scrambles your brainwaves…. Pass it on.

    Seriously.

  • Laurie

FYE was released by mistake? Did I read that correctly? This is getting to be hilarious!

  • jersey

will, I THINK her video is going to be playing before the movie.

  • girlygirl

It seems weird to me that they would release so many different singles in a short span of time. It may be their strategy to try and put out music in different types of markets (Hot AC, Pop, Rock, etc), but it also comes across — in my mind — as a little klike, let’s just throw a bunch of stuff out there and see what sticks.

Saw mj’s “this is it” last night & today we’re recording in the studio where “we are the world” was recorded. Who wants to watch thriller?!

OK, I’m intrigued. What would Kris and his band be recording today?

  • mmb

just saw a whole bunch of those big posters that they plaster around NYC at construction sites etc. for Adam’s album…they are using the FYE single pic, not the album cover….it looked really cool…for some reason this made me happy
